Despite shifting into higher gear within the consumer's green conscience, hybrid vehicles are still tethered to the gas pump via a fuel-thirsty 100-year-old invention: the internal combustion engine.

However, researchers at Michigan State University have built a prototype gasoline engine that requires no transmission, crankshaft, pistons, valves, fuel compression, cooling systems or fluids. Their so-called Wave Disk Generator could greatly improve the efficiency of gas-electric hybrid automobiles and potentially decrease auto emissions up to 90 percent when compared with conventional combustion engines.

The engine has a rotor that's equipped with wave-like channels that trap and mix oxygen and fuel as the rotor spins. These central inlets are blocked off, building pressure within the chamber, causing a shock wave that ignites the compressed air and fuel to transmit energy.

Notice that the Date On the Film is 2009...this engine has been around for quite sometime,and the reason it hasn't come online yet is It doesn't work like they wanted.The rotational inertia isn't sufficient to power the size of the generator needed to power an electric vehicle,and If they make it heavier it will lose some of the added efficiency that is the reason for making the engine itself.also the cost involved with making the precision machine parts is very high,considering it only has like 4 parts.

I didn't post the whole story,, it was published on the 6th of this month,,, looks like they may have solved some of those problems ,,


Researchers estimate the new model could shave almost 1,000 pounds off a car's weight currently taken up by conventional engine systems.

Last week, the prototype was presented to the energy division of the Advanced Research Projects Agency, which is backing the Michigan State University Engine Research Laboratory with $2.5 million in funding.

I applaud the engineering,and Hope that it works.There was a device a few years ago that was a compressor for a Turbo,and was driven by hydraulic fluid from an engine driven pump.While this worked extremely well,this is probably the first time you have ever heard of the Hydracharger.weird this happen when something like this gets too good.

This thing would have to weigh less then nothing to shave 1000 lbs off a modern day drivetrain! The 68 GTO I'm building has a big block motor, an auto trans and a larger then stock radiator and its "engine systems" weigh about that much!

That # includes the engine,the cooling system,the trans,a lot of the engine control units,fuel storage,drive shat,differential,brakes and exhaust.Its a cascade effect

There still needs to be some form of a differential, a brake system, and an exhaust. The cooling system also provides the heat to the interior so it will be replaced by something. The size of the turd box car this thing will power will not equal 1000 lbs of drivetrain.

I just had a thought though...they might be referring to the extra weight the current hybrid cars have to carry around. All the battery components, batteries, miles of copper wire and other electronics make a hybrid quite a bit heavier then a conventional car of the same size.

The Direction things are headed is toward 1 motor per wheel...so No dif....they will also be the brakes...the regenerative type.Heat will be electric,and the exhaust will not need a Large Dia.(less flow volume),Short path and low noise generated will eliminate a lot of the components.Now Cooling....the heat that is normally taken away by the coolant will be exhaust heat and what is left will be removed by a small volume of Oil(lubricant).

For the old school guys (like me), that (25KW) translates to about 33 HP.

But that 33hp will be driving a generator.....should be making alot of power at the wheels.It should be able to drive 4 50 hp wheel motors No problem....that's 200 hp.with about 300 to 375 ft.-lbs. of torque from 0 rpm The ecm will have a good time controlling wheel spin.the first Tesla Prototype would boil the tires until they burst....then they turned down the rate of acceleration to make the tires last,get you in trouble with the law,and scare grandmothers and school children.they only 325ft-lbs of torque.

You statement about 200 HP is somewhat misleading. If the engine makes 33HP, that's all you have...unless you store it (in batteries.) and use the stored energy to get more than the available 33 HP. If you store the energy in batteries, then you give up all that weight savings that they talked about.

Don't get me wrong.....I like the advancement in technology. I just want to be sure that we are comparing apples to apples.

This is my way of thinking also. Like 2D, I'm all for advancements and even conservation but the numbers dont add up in my old school, gearhead mind. It is inefficient to use momentum to create current to turn into momentun...at least in my mind it is. To say 33 HP at the crank will result in 200 HP at the wheels is also hard to wrap my mind around.

I once invented a vehicle that got unlimited mileage and never needed to be refilled. I inadvertently left it running and in gear and it got away from me. As far as I know it's still running somewhere.

To say that 25kw of electrical energy of directly equivalent to 33 hp is mildly inaccurate...the formula for a "truer" conversion is vicious and way beyond my counting on fingers math skills.But a 288 hp Tesla Roadster use 21kW/hr.per 100 miles....and that motor will be putting out 25.I do know that 150 hp electric is an awesomely powerful motor....and that is from direct experience.
If that"turbine can produce the amount of energy required to run a car....I for one will be happy.I drive Hybrids all the time,and i truly enjoy the super quiet operation.....driving along and hearing the birds in the trees is pretty cool.even if it is only 20 mph.

A poorly worded description of what is basically a generator motor. It still won't save 1000lbs off of the drive system of a car since most Hybrid engines are only 4cly (which weigh about 300lbs) and a 4spd trans (which is about 150lbs).

At what speed...acceleration rates? We're talking energy usage. When you say that the tesla uses so many KW to go 100 miles, that really doesn't tell us anything. Going 100 miles at 20 mph takes a lot less energy than going 100 miles at 200 mph....or stopping and restarting as fast as you can.

HP is HP. It's a measure of energy. The important thing in this story, is that they say they can make power 3.5 times more efficiently than a old style gas engine can.

I hope they can really do it. Can you imagine cutting gas usage by that much!

I guess the mistake we are making is we are thinking in terms of what a car resembles today. Like I said earlier, my GTO drivetrain would barely make the 1000 lbs. I guess if we can picture a surfboard with 3' tall tires on the 4 corners and a flux capacitor behind the head of a very uncomfortable looking driver (on his/her way to an anti-something or other protest) we are closer to figuring out why they can claim to save 1000 lbs! Lol.

That is at an EPA standard of 60 Mph.....the roadster is limited to 125mph.and acel.curve is a mystery to me.Range was about 280 miles...with that being said the Motor in the OP's article will be running at a constant rate,for peak efficiency,and not having to turn the wheels.The Moment of inertia of an inflatable tire changes with wear and temp....the Moment of the generator doesn't(or as much).I think that this is the next logical step in evolution of the auto... a constant rate turbine(or other engine)powering a Gen.and that in turn powers wheel motors...Jaguar has a show car that does just this...2 turbines powering the gen. that powers 4 200 hp wheel motors.....125-140 mpg(fuel dependant) and 800 hp at the wheel 1300 ft.lbs of torque...absolutely blinding acceleration....this is a more valid comparison than the Tesla....Just My 2 cents....your results may vary.....Friends.

Well, since I don't know how trains work exactly, I can't comment. I just don't see that as an engine. I don't consider an alternator or battery the engine either. That thing is a generator. It takes fuel and turns it into another form of energy that the engine (in this case the electric motor) turns into the mechanical motion.

That piece would become obsolete if a solar panel could provide the same energy output, but the engine would still be needed. That was my point. Its a fuel cell basically.

and before you call me on it, yes, it is in itself, an engine. Though it is not the engine of the car since it does not move the car from the mechanical motion it creates... I've been called and less, so I'm covering my butt... lol

Haha, yeah. I mean, you still need an "engine". Something has to turn the wheels. We can't drive down hill all day. So yeah, I can't see how you will take an engine system that weighs about 500lbs and replace it with an electric system and knock the weight of the car down 1000lbs. I can't see it knocking down the 500lbs. Now maybe if you make the entire care out of carbon fiber you have something. Or mak it a go cart.

If I win the lotto, I'm hiring some of these guys so we can slap one of these elctric hybrid engines into a V8 truck. A few hundred HP and even more TQ and 50mpg, with a 20g tank. I can live with 1000 miles to the tank... lol

as I remember from My RR days...Trains have great big steady state diesel engins that power "dynamos"...that in turn power electric motors,that move the train..engine runs at "best speed" for what ever it is doing...
