Before I was a paracord junky, I was (and still am) an outdoorsman with a love of off-trail exploration. It was my efforts to make myself a better set of pacing beads for land- nav that jumpstarted the knotting frenzy I find myself in today. Land navigation with traditional skills that include dead reckoning. Recording distance travelled through pace count or distanct/time relationship along with direction allows you to find your way back, even if you dont have a map. With a map, you can plot your courses AND use terrain recognition and baselines to re-calibrate your location as you go. I will never rely on the GPS, only use it to supplement a traditional approach that has guided explorers, sailors and aviators in the past.

Pace count is important, and a way to keep track like ranger beads helps. Also, experience and calibration will give you a good pace number for certain distances under a variety of terrain conditions. When exploring off trail for fun I enjoy honing my skills by creating my own map, plotting (to-scale) the courses of my travel (bearing and distance) on paper using my simple $10 silva baseplate compass. If I reach a point where I want to wander a bit, I tie up a piece of bright survey flagging, or my orange handkerchief at the location of the end of my last course so I can come back (keep it in sight) and resume.

Draw a north arrow on your sheet (I keep a little rite in the rain notebook with grids); use the lines on the paper for n/s reference or draw your own to aid in proper compass placement on the paper to transfer a real world bearing onto paper. if you stick with magnetic north and are plotting your own map, you need not worry about declination. I think this skill allows you to safely hit the woods for some exploration when you may have otherwise not if you didnt have a pre-printed map. Also, with this method, your course can change as field conditions warrant and you'll always have a map back to the start. When you reach an obstacle like a swamp or lake, you dont need to use the oversimplified techniques of doing a couple of uniform 90 degree or 45 degree turns and expect to be around your obstacle and on the right course. You have the freedom to adjust your direction as real conditions require, and always know your current position relative to where you started and can set a bearing for home!

What many people dont realize is that because what you are plotting for distance is all relative (in similar terrain); you can even plot "paces", or time traveled rather than "distance"! This works as long as you determine a scale and stick to it (ie. so many inches = so many paces, or so many minutes).

Here are the field notes from a little jaunt I took 4 years ago; note that since I was in similar type terrain the whole time so there was no major adjustments required for terrain changes. I didn't plot distance OR pace count, instead I plotted TIME - again this works because its all relative! You can see I chose one block to represent 2 minutes, then I kept a log of bearing/start/stop travel time. I love this stuff!

When plotting time, you must adjust if you have a very easy segment, then some really tough terrain you must realize that you'll cover more ground in the same amount of time on the easy segment and adjust accordingly. this is similar in concept to adjustments you make to pace count in varying terrain.

That was a really good explanation of the uses of the ranger beads and how to get around.
I'd give you a rep, but it seems that I gotta spread it around.

I do have a problem with keeping track of where I'm going, unless I really "Have To be some where".

Most of my time out doors is spent hunting, generally in an area that is known, and I kinda let my Gut feeling, lead me around. hard to explain.

I suppose I should get into navigation for the sake of navigation........but it seems I get lead astray, easily.

one more entry, then I'll shutup on the topic for a bit!

...there are no hard and fast rules about adjusting pace count although I've found rules of thumb. Don't trust any formulas or typical percentage adustments either. don't use any charts! you need to calibrate your own paces. I chose to do 1/10 mile increments because I could use a handheld GPS to track 1/10 mile while I counted paces a bunch of times to get an average. The reason I chose 1/10 is that i use 1:24000 scale maps and my compass base has a scale for 1:24000 maps in 1/10 mile increments. When I'm doing shorter walks, I just assume 1/2 my normal paces for 1/20 (0.05 miles) and use the same compass baseplate scale to plot on the map. you follow me? your pace count on the street with no backpack is your optimum pace, your numbers will increase depending on trails, conditions, pack weight. its easy to adjust/check in the field by pace counting from say a trail head to a river where you can measure the distance on the map. knowing how far you travelled, and how many paces it took you will allow you to calc your pace count under those conditions. over time making adjustments becomes second nature.

Every once in a while when I'm off trail and I know I'm going to hit a trail or a river, I'll pace to calibrate. Lets say the map indicates I'll hit the trail in 0.35 miles. I'm pace counting and I hit the trail when I'd only tabulated -.25 miles. This means I was actually travelling further with each pace than I anticipated, so going foreward that day I should adjust accordingly, counting fewer steps per 1/10th (or 1/20). Conversely, if I did not hit the trail until I'd counted 0.45 miles in beads, that means I was travelling a shorter distance with each pace than I thought. I should adjust by counting more paces per 1/10 (or 1/20) from there on.

one other option to practice in different terrain, trail conditions, steep ups, steep downs, bushwhacks etc. is to watch the trip counter on your GPS while pace counting - whatch it tic 1/10th of a mile and see how many paces you took. Do it a couple times and average. take notes for future reference about that sort of terrain (and whether or not you were carrying a heavy load or not).

its may sound complicated, but in reality its just plain fun!

Great write up. I don't use any of it, however. A map and compass are really all I need. I can even get by pretty well on just dead reckoning. Just remember that the "traditional" approach didn't include plotting longitude until a reliable time piece was invented. 100 years from now GPS may be looked upon as the "traditional" approach.

So far in my life, I had to rely on direction that include, Over yonder,... down thata way a piece......over by the old burned barn etc.

I try to at least the lay of the land, even if it's just a road map, with some kinda scale.
I try to determine where I am, at start, which way I'm heading, hence which way back, or going from way point to way point.

I also try to rely on other clues, wind direction, sun orientation, habitation noise, cars, trains house noise, and even which way the major air plane routes run.
Have I ever been "lost"....yes, in an 80 acre section that was connected to the Bermuda triangle.

I use GPS along with many other forms of navigation. I set pace with a range finder that is much more accurate. I use gps on rivers to warn of up coming hazards and when I check my route the gps shows I was 200 yards on shore half the time. Many times I walk the same way in and out and when I check the tracking it looks like I took two different coarses. I use the Garmin oregon 400 C. It is not a cheap one. Some areas have better coverage than others but I see the advantage of GPS as convenience not accuracy.

Rick, same here, map, compass and/or dead rec. I do not use GPS units at all due to their issues even still. I find I have a natural sense of direction and spacial awariness. I will often use game trails in areas I do not know or use bird flights etc... I have never been really lost except once in the BWCA where I was paying NO attention to where I was at because of all the wildlife that were out at that time. I get to a river side camp that has been used by many. I look on the map and mistaken that camp for another that was earlier in the day by 2 hours. I had it set in my mind where I was at and was totally blind-sided when I was at another camp so soon. So I sat down and did some DR and map look see and figured out where I was.

I usually take area topo maps with me and a sighted compass.

I use accurate navigation for much more than just not getting lost. In fact that is the least of the reasons.

I also use GPS via Google Earth to check elevations or to acquire coordinates to plot them into my hand held or into my vehicle GPS. I think GPS is pretty handy and pretty accurate at least around here.

I bought a real early Magellan GPS, quite a few years ago (lots), and honestly the most useful part is the elevation above sea level and coordinates.
Anything else is a real PITA.
I carry it around in the truck because I paid a lot of money for it, but really put me off.
Guess I need a new one?

DW got me one for Christmas a few years ago, and is real good at telling me where I have just passed, but did a good job in La. giving me names for mostly unmarked back roads. (why do we need signs? Folks around here know wher the road goes, and if you don't know, y'all don't need to be here)

So I guess I'm still a map and compass, guy.

The one for the car is actually pretty cool. It shows you a picture of the road sign before you get to it, tells you what lane to be in, will give you hotels, restaurants, etc. if you need one. The only thing it doesn't do is sit in the back seat and ask if we're there yet or tell me we have to find a rest area every 20 minutes.

With the limited knowledge of land navigation I have, I was taught to use pace count only when you were down to very short final (you Rangers know those terms). For longer distance with or without a map, I learned "terrain walking" which used identifiable landmarks as well as where to walk (not through swamps unless you can't help it, etc.).

A great way to find out your pace count is find a stretch of road with a ditch and brush on the same side. Mark off your distance, whether it's 1/10 a mile or 100 yds, and walk it on the road, record that pace count, walk it in the ditch, record that pace count, and walk it in the brush, record that.

Now you have a flat ground, soft ground, and brush count.

The best way to test how good you are is too walk "squares". Walk north 100yrds using the compass azimuth and your pace count. Walk east 100yds the same way, walk south 100 yds, and walk west 100 yds, at night, and see how close you are to your starting spot.

This is really fun to do with kids. Well, and Privates.

My daughter is trying to electric gadget me.... I just got a new cell phone this week and she programmed all the bells and whistles in it.....suposidly it has GPS in it with a thing called an app. I barely know how to call out on it yet....the dang thing beeps and clangs and whistles and I have no idea what it is trying to tell me.

Lots of folks use those GPS in Letter Boxing and Geocaching. I just like to point to a place and say, "Hey, I am going way over there."

That was a really good read. I always like to hear about new ways to navigate. I had the privledge of attending an advanced land nav course in the mountains of west virginia not too long ago. Basically what they taught was the sport of orienteering. essentially using dead reckoning and a series of prominent terrain features to move from point to point as fast as you can. One of the excercises included drawing your own map from memory. The course made me a firm believer in the use of a compass and not a gps, much to the dismay of my wife. Great information though.

Great write up on this subject.. It'll give me one more thing to practice during my hikes.. There's a test track near my home where it's measured off in tenths of miles .. Will be perfect for measuring off my steps..

Great write-up. It seems a lot of things are going to GPS and the land navigation skills are becoming a thing of the the past. I still teach my Soldiers, but it is not even part of our NCO schools anymore. Definitely a good skill and knowledge to have.
