Ya know, I feel bad for the Japanese,, And now there is all this talk about US Aid being organized to be sent to the earthquake victims,,, What about the People HERE in the US ? we have people starving right here that will NEVER see the kind of help "We" are about to send to Japan... Thats BULL SHYT !,,,,,,,,,, sorry, but its just NOT RIGHT !! Homeless People HERE should get that help......... Give AMERICANS food and emergency shelter,,,,,,,,,, Sorry Japan got hammered,,,,, but there are Men, Women and children starving and homeless right here,,,,,, Give them the MRE's and tents,, NOW ! G,,,,, Damnit,,,,,, It pisses me off !!!!

I have no problem with aid to Japan. There are some countries I wish we would put on our ignore list, but that is another story. The people that need aid in Japan were being useful a day ago, the "starving" people here(with their cell phones) probably werent...I'll leave it at that.

Exactly...... Here we go,, (The US) sending a bunch of money to a bunch of people that don't even pay taxes here,,,,,,,, Japan gets PLENTY of US money from sales of cars and electronics,,, Dying people are dying people, no matter what the cause,,,, Here ,, for now, Its a bad economy,,, Families have been displaced and are living in cars,,, Sorry Japan,,,,,,,, but we have our own problems !

There are so many relief agencies here at home that if someone is in need there is usually a place for them to go. Shelters, food pantries, etc. abound in this country. Why should we expect other countries to come to our aid when we are one of the richest countries on the planet? It would be sort of like the king requesting assistance from the peasants because the water got too high in the moat. Ya'll would have a field day with that one. Nope, I don't have a problem sending aid to Japan.

Sarky - Can you provide a source for that? I'd really like to read something that supports that. It's not a challenge. I've heard that a lot and can't find anything on it.

I believe, if you read closely, the aid being offered is in the area of airlift (helicopters), rescue equipment and personnel, and infrastructure repair. I don't see how we can possibly not assist. Even our country would need assistance like this if we were overwhelmed like they were. The aid being offered is not in the form of food etc.

The comparison to our floods in Tnn etc does not really hold water. Our infrastructure to cope with it on an immediate basis was not compromised.

We are talking about a country...the size of California.. It will be little effort for us that have lived the good life to help all we can. We are talking a Quake, a Sunami, a Nuclear radio leak. True devastation not an entitlement! Let us pray the turmoil in this old world gives us the opportunity to make a difference.

In an emergency of such colossal proportions we have to help because that's who we are as a nation and as human beings.
Now if we want to entertain stopping handouts to countries that don't deserve it like Mexico, I'm willing to listen.

I concur with Benesse. It is one thing to help our global 'neighbors' in a case of dire extremis. It is another thing to give trade concessions and or aid to countries that are abusive in their relationship with us.

I have to disagree too, JC. No country, including the USA is prepared for a disaster of such magnitude. This is an emergency. If we can't offer aid regardless of where and when, well it's just not moral.
Offering help to citizens of your own country on a regular basis is totally different.

We is the USA are pretty much self sufficient...... when it comes to emergencies... as far as social issues of starvation and homeless, yes, we should do more and NOW... but in a disaster in another country.... yes, send aid, help and assistance. Japan better than most countries were preparred for this, but they still need help... and I would help them first because they are so well preparred.....their being prepped will make the success of a good outcome that much more plausable than lets say Haiti....you watch, Japanese will get r done in a very short time (with some help from other get r done folks like us Americans) and come out better and bigger. No matter how much money and effort was thrown at Haiti, it will still be a failure due to the mindset of the people there as well as most of the money that was thrown at Haiti has still not been passed out and/or was stolen. What Japan needs right now is GEAR and Boots on the ground and we are right in there providing it.... they do not need money or better mud bricks.

I do agree that in the here and now, we should take better care of our kids, elderly and homeless. I do a lot of Vol work at the VA with homeless VETS........ ONE(1) at a time.........

We could employ our homeless, less fortunate, and illegals, and ship them over there to aid in the relief. They would get help, the japanese would get help, and the other Americans who would rather not have to look down at the above here in our own country would be relieved too.

We is the USA are pretty much self sufficient...... when it comes to emergencies...

...up to a point.
The point being, we've been enormously blessed and have never have been tested on our own land. (Not counting the revolutionary war and the civil war) None of us know the horrors of foreign troops marching through our cities and bombs dropping throughout the night while we huddle with our children in some damp basement.
We really have no idea and I hope we never find out.

Well, yeah we have, sort of. The Japanese released dozens of balloon bombs during WWII. They were actually the first to recognize prevailing winds and used them to send balloon bombs over the west coast of the U.S. One was found by a family and several were killed when it exploded. And....the Japanese did invade Alaska. Kiska and Attu Islands to be specific.

I fully support helping Japan. Indeed, the homeless should recieve help and many others should aswell, but in a case like this i think that helping a (possibly) strong economical ally is both the right thing to do morally and seen from a business point. Besides, the japanese kids probably suffer more than your regular drunken homeless bum, and imo should be prioritised. In theory you could very well say that it wouldnt matter what nationality they're from, because the human race is supposed to reproduce to keep the race alive, and one could argue that a kid in japan would be more worthy of reproducing (later on) than say a homeless person with diseases and probably an inability to raise a child. Hope nobody gets offended with this, just wanted to write down my opinion since i have been following this event alot on tv.

I have to agree here that we need to help japan and hope that when something major happens here, and IMHO it WILL happen eventually. The New madrid fault, the San Andreas fault, or another will eventually raise He## the japanese people will offer to help us as well. Now I do agree with JC that we do need to do more to help our homeless, elderly, children. We are doing that to some extent here we have over a dozen agencies that do so in Evansville. Some however are homeless by choice and admit it. We have a couple who work where I do. They admit they don't want it any other way. They get a roof over their heads, 3 meals a day, all free of charge, free health care at the local health dept./ free clinics. including dental and vision care. Now I know these are the exception rather than the rule but it happens. Some people really do need help, maybe we will eventually do a better job of it.

Well I just happened to have worked for a well known "Relief agency" when 9/11 happened. You would have been surprised at the amount of stuff donated to help out that sat in a basement. Enough bottled water to have lasted me a year(About 7 pallets of bottled water). Enough home-made "Trail mix" to have fed all the homeless in the area for a week. Some shovels and other tools that had been donated too.(Brand new tools) To the best of my knowledge one year later it was still sitting there. This is besides the truckloads that were actually shipped out (At least 3-7 full semi's. 3 FULL semi's I know of but others were also sent, When I was not present.)

My point is That while stuff was used/sent to help, more just sat and the Trail mix was eventually no good(mold growing in it for the home made trail mix, expired dates on the commercial stuff), it was NEVER even used to help those "at home" that COULD have been helped with at least a portion of what was NOT sent to help. This agency also helped the homeless in the area but that stuff never made it out of the building. Instead it went to waste. So I can, in a sense, understand JC's ire in this regards. Americans (that are able to) LOVE to help when needed, as I'm sure other countries also are. However when you have excess and it spoils, when it COULD have helped those "at home", it is unconscionable.

Poco - that is not the fault of desire or willingness to help, but rather the bureaucracies involved that are so inefficient that they can't get out of their own way.

I'm with Crash, I don't see it as a failure of the organization but of one or a few people that allowed that to occur. Perhaps they didn't have enough money to send the rest on to those that needed it and no one asked about donating locally so they didn't think about it. (shrug)

Oh I asked. I was ignored and told to go do something. I also realize it was not the Organization as a whole.... just that particular "office". I can even understand keeping the non-perishable stuff "for the next time". It just bothers me that the perishable stuff was not fully utilized.

Perhaps the thing to do is to make only donations that we can administer, or no deal. (at least in countries known for corruption)
That's why small, private charities that do it all--beginning to end-- are much more successful.
