How much, if anything, would you pay for a water filter straw that...

I bought a couple of straws from Rick's store, they were reasonable, can't remember exactly how much.
So, I will say, $30 bucks.
I also thought that the home made filter, presented by one of our members, was pretty slick, so made a couple and they do filter mud out, from personal experience.

They are bigger than the straws, but much cheaper, materials easy to come by, and along with leaving water in a plastic bottle, in the sun, was also a discussion about this, for solar dis-infecting and of course boiling, would satisy my short term needs.

...Not sure if this qualifies, but I don't like the straws. I use the Burkey sports bottles instead and spend 12.00 for the replacement filter that eliminates or reduces:

• Harmful microscopic pathogens: E-coli >99.99999%, Cryptosporidium, Giardia and other pathogenic bacteria.

• Toxic chemicals> 99.9%: Trihalomethanes, VOCs, detergents, pesticides, etc.

• Radiologicals: > 99.9%: Radon 222

• Heavy metals > 99.9%: Aluminum, Cadmium, Chromium, Copper, Lead, and Mercury.

• Unpleasant taste and odors, cloudiness, silt, sediment and chlorine > 99.9%.

I do not use a straw or a purifyer... when in the wild, I boil all water......ALL......if the water in clouded, I will run through a charcoal/filtraition filter first (NOT a purifyer), but I rarely have to do that. A purifyer only works so long due to either contanimated or age, an ongoing expense that is not necessary. I feel it is best to know how to treat your own water with tried and true methods....i.e. fire, iodine, clorine etc......

I bought a purifyer, used it three times and decided to go back to the real way of water treatment.

Purifiers ARE a real way of treating water. It's just one more way. The only reason they wouldn't work is because the filter is plugged from repeated use, you've assembled it incorrectly or allowed cross contamination. You can expect a Katadyn or MSR to filter anywhere from 750 to 1000 liters depending on brand and water turbidity. You also have water quicker using less fuel. I wouldn't part with my MSR.

I dunno Rick, a purifyer type gadget is just one more thing that can break, fail or worse, by just not working and making you sick and usually at the worse possible moment. It adds weight, is expensive, requires ongoing maintenance, replacement filters (if they are still made and/or available) and needs to be used very carefully. I have always been a believer of K.I.S.S (with reasonable backups or fall-backs)......... on matters of fire, water, food, medical and shelter for emergencies. If you have a base camp set in stone, sure, add gadgets that can be maintained and kept working to make life easier.

I have the MSR....and honestly I am going to trade it off for some ammo or something at the next show, things I can really use.

I will most of the time have a fire going anyways, might as well keep water on the fire all the time too...... Yes, takes a lil time to get your first boil, 20 minutes or so, but it is sure fired positive to make water safe.....and a lil bit of knowledge will make it taste just fine.
