savage 99 calibers

A buddy of mine wants to trade a savage 99 for a 1911 colt with a 3.5 inch barrel. the colt is a newer gun. He has three savage 99's. one in 30-30, one in 300 savage and one in 250 savage. these guns are shooters. he wants to trade me one of these for the colt.
I have no idea which one to choose. I don't think a take down model would be as good as a solid frame. Caliber doesn't really matter to me, my needs are met so this is for play purposes. any thoughts??

The Savage 99E Take Down in .300 Savage or .303 savage with the brass cart counter in my opinion is the best 99 ever made. Their take downs are solid, ZERO play, if there is some, it is super easy to shim tight out of sight. ONE REALLY cool thing with the take downs is that at one point Savage made a .410 barrel set for it and 2 1/2" shells work perfect in the action as well as the .300 and also in the .303TD. You often find the .410 barrel set on gun broker for about $200.

The average price of a 99ETD (if another letter, the price can go up or down, depending on the letter like 99H or 99C) in .300 Sav in VGC go for about $650 sometimes as high as $750 used in VGC. Take $50 off if rec is drilled and tapped for a peep sight. If there is a Savage TANG sight, grab the gun up, give him the .45 and kiss him on the cheek....you will have gotten a $900 gun minimum.

There were a lot of craze cracking at the chamber for the 250-3000 savages and they had a recall to get re-heat treated.....I would avoide this cal as there is NO marking to tell if it was re-heated. Even the take down models in this cal, be careful of what you are getting.

Unless you really need a 30-30, stay away from it... they rarely sell for even $400.

Do not worry about patina... savages go plum color very quick. If there is no brass cartridge counter on the left side, take $150 off the guns value.

If the frame, lever and take down lug are color case hardened.... add $50

If the trigger is a single set trigger add $75

If straight grip take off $25, if pistol & checkered, add $25

If the rear sight is the two screw (1 forward for side to side adjustments and 1 rear for elevation) adjustable kind add $25

If rear sight is dovetailed with a slider take $50 off.

If front sight is savage, marbles or herters add $15

If the butt plate is the steel slide away and stock holds 3 more shells add $100

If barrel length is shorter than 18 3/4" take $200 off the gun, should be 21"-25" some factry barrels at 19" but those are very rare and watch out for home chop and crown jobs.

IF... you do not take the take down, let me know, I would like dibbs on it, even if it is the 30-30.......would just need some pictures.

I've got a 99 takedown in .300 savage. Very old. Brass counter, steel butt plate. It belonged to a great uncle. The story is he won it in a thanksgiving turkey shoot around the time Savage introduced the .300. My grandmother said he was shooting his .45 cal black powder rifle that as she put it, "it was as long as he was tall". Kinda sounds like a Tenn. or Ken. long rifle.

thanks for the advise. I'm glad I asked, there's a lot of info to chew on and consider. I'm not sure what a nearly new cold officers model is worth.

depends on if anything was done to it... and depends on the circles you run in... anywhere from $600 to about $850, if you watch what they are selling for and not the ASKING price, you will see they sell lower and lower as Glocks, Sigs and other Buzz word guns are selling higher. , if it is a series 70 or 80 maybe up to $900 if the box, papers and stuff are there.

This one has octagon barrel, coin silver front sight, and curved steel but plate, brass counter. Along with it was a couple partial boxes of ammo, w/hardware store stickers, prices were like $1.89 or some such.
I have passed it along to my nephew along with a couple of other "old family guns".

I have not seen a "take down model", so pic's would be very interesting.
I would trade in a heart beat.

Savage take downs are to drool over, there is a Grade 3 (engraved and gold inlayed) 3 barrel 99F TD in .243, 257 roberts & 222 swift at Cabelas in Michigan.... a mere $17,500.

Yeah .303 ammo is kind of hard to find. I bought a case of 500 commercial Remmington back around 2003 and still have not shot a one yet. All I have is a SMLE Jungle carbine, another dang safe queen I should sell.

Savages are my passion and weakness... any and all prior to 1947..............I am still looking for a double barrel .410 savage/springfield/stevens/fox SxS

On the bottom of the steel butt plate it has a logo inside a circle similar to this, except where this one says "SAVAGE RIFLES" mine says "QUALITY" and it says something at the very bottom that is unreadable.

You don't suppose that it was a take down model?
What is the give away.?
Is there a lever or catch?

Only good part is that my nephew is a perfect beneficiary, and hunting partner, I not sad I gave it to him.
I might have a couple of more cool, odd, older firearms that he will get when I croak, at least I know he appreciates them.

Kids that hunt and fish, don't mug little old ladies.

P.S. Might want to give the old girl a rub down before y'all put it back.

300 Sav is a great round. I own a few pump Remingtons in this caliber and really like the way they shoot and the knock down power they have. A friend took his moose with one last year and it did it in one shot. I've owned a bunch of the Savage 99s in different calibers but never really fell in love with them. I dont think I have any of them left anymore...

Hunter, the barrel band in front of the receiver has a notch in it.

Douglas barrels have extra barrels for the TD's, they are expensive though.....but are in some crazy calibers like 375 HH, .416 Rigby, .338 Lapua etc..... .the bolt face is machined to take interchangable calibers, just have to change out the brass rotory.....although easier said than done... I personally am a beliver in the .300 Savage as a medium / big game getter and they can be loaded way down for smaller like Coyote or loaded up to smaller bear/moose takers. They will pent grizz skulls at 600 yards with ease. They have deep pent and rapid expansion and can be loaded with many diff types of powders to gain different results.

I have kept 4 full boxes of actual Savage brand .300 Savage ammo just for the time I finally pop for a 99 TD. I promised myself that I will sell 5 of my safe queens the day I get a 99 td.

I have a Ruger #1 in .300 Savage and it is my go to gun for when I go to Montana for horse back fly fishing trips.

I'd go with the .300 for hunting deer or bear or elk, it's in the same class as .308 Win.
The .250 is about like a 257 Roberts, and is good for deer, antelope or smaller, deadly on coyotes and other varmints.
The .30-30 is, well, a .30-30. A good basic rifle and ammo is available nearly everywhere.
If one is a .303 Savage, avoid it. They don't make ammo for it anymore, and brass is very hard to get to load your own. I know, I have one.
The take-down is a valuable plus, to drool over.

The only serial number on mine is on the bottom of the action.

Yeah, sometimes they're like that.
Mine has serial numbers under the butt plate on the stock, on the underside of the butt plate, on the forend under the barrel and on the underside of the rear sight, as well as the number under the action. All match.
the historian for Savage says that when guns leave the factory they MOSTLY had matching numbers. Occassionally a stock or forend would crack, or have poor finish or whatever, and a replacement would be put on that had no number. Odd that yours has no numbers at all, other than the action. Maybe the entire stock and etc. were replaced at sometime?
Oh, yeah, yours may be newer. Mine was made in 1916. I think newer rifles, in the '60's and '70s and so on, had no numbers but under the action. I was assuming the OP was referring to an old gun.

I ended up trading for a 300 savage. It's not a take down. I don't see the allure of a take down to be honest. One thing about it, 300 savage ammo is pricey at the store. I see it's time to get some dies and brass.
