[Sourdough]

I really like this idea. I am in the process of creating remote caches. So I am thinking who do I know that has a vacuum sealer thing for food. Next I think, "I wonder if there is a business in town that does that service"…?

So what if someone had a used U-Haul truck and they parked outside say Sportsman's Whorehouse & they offered vacuum sealing service on Saturdays only. I could super clean three or five firearms, hose them down with LPS#3 wrap them in old cotton towels dipped in cheap 10W oil, then I could put them into a trash bag, and take them to the guy who would charge me $20.00 each to double vacuum seal them. I should think the guy could do 10 or 20 firearms per hour. Make $200.00 to $400.00 per hour.

I seem to remember reading that vacuum sealing them doesn't prevent them from rusting or corroding. That's why they use cosmoline. Let me see if I can track that info. down.

LPS#3 is a spray cosmoline. Plus you would have the towel pre-soaked in oil.

From the mechanics end of it, it sounds like a good idea. From the business end and making any money from it you'd have to evaluate what kind of demand there is for a service like that. It can be the slickest idea around, but if nobody wants it then it doesn't ,matter how good of an idea it was. If you really wanted to try it, you could do a couple of test market runs to see if there is a genuine interest. For that you may be able to borrow or rent the equipment rather than invest much $$$ into it initially.

Instead of cosmoline, check out a product called Fluid Film.

You could just put them in a VCI bag (vapor corrosion inhibitor) like the Bianchi blue bags, then slip it in a vacuum bag and seal it, less mess, but I think the VCI bags have a "Shelf life"

Would the oil ruin any of the other parts or the gun? I know many have wood stocks. Would the oil degrade over time and cause unexpected harm to the gun, especially if stored improperly?

I'm not a gun guy, just those were the first couple of questions I would be concerned with.

Oil could penetrate and soften the wood. Depending on the caliber, it could cause the stock to split from the recoil. I wouldnt use oiled rags close to the steel either because oil and water seperate. It would be possible that the rags could hold water to the metal parts of the firearm if they were to become damp. I would use PVC pipe instead of plastic vacuum bags and flush and fill the chamber with nitrogen. I dont know how long nitrogen would keep in PVC but it would help with keeping the air dry and wouldnt hurt the wood.

As far as a business idea, who knows. My guess is that most of the people who would want a firearm buried would rather do the prep themselves so no one else sees that they are about to bury a firearm...

I don't know if 'oil' would be harmful or not either, and wondered about that.

I do know that the military cosmoleen keeps rust away for 70+ years, but no matter how many time you clean, wipe clean......on a hot day in the case, in the back of the truck.....when you take it out, better use a rag..it will be sorta still slimy....

That is why I recommend Fluid Film. Won't harm the wood, sticks to the metal and WILL wipe off with a rag. I would Fluid Film the firearm, vacum seal it with O2 absorbers and then put it in a sealed PVC pipe.

Your welcome, and thanks for the idea, so far, somehow, I just can't seem to bury that poor little H&R 12 SS, in the ground.

I would worry about rust and corrosion, and suck, as even if a real good container, was sealed, dessicant packs, etc..... there is always condensation to consider, from temp differential.
So this thread kinda got my interest, as well.

H63 - do a test. Treat some steel tubing and stock the way you would treat a firearm and bury it. Actually do two separate burials - one treated and one untreated. Dig them up at some point to see how if fared.

I would certainly try that before I committed a firearm to the deep.....then it's just remembering where I put them.

Hey Rick, you said vacuum sealing won't prevent corrosion/rust. This would be due to residual moisture in the sealed bag, correct? If so, what if you included a dessicant inside the sealed bag?

I think this whole thing is an interesting idea and am sorta rooting for it.

To truly get all moisture out, and prevent corrosion you need to pull a vacuum down to -29.9 or so inches of water column, as you do in A/C systems.
Desiccant packs have finite absorption limit, then need to be changed out.
