On YOUR last outing: 1-thing right, wrong, changed

Ok....On your last outing (even if you are lving it day to day), an outing can be a walk, hike, camp out or a simple day in the yard etc... please list the following:
One thing you did right (explain): I remembered to bring a pocket knife, strike-lite kit and gloves....I have short term real memory loss due to health issues, remembering these things are really a simple daily win for me.

One thing you did wrong (explain): I picked up the wrong "Ring Cutter," it was an unsharpened one. I have a pile of about 40 of them. When I cut the greens and vine, it makes for ragged cuts that I have to recut with a knife, double the work, when one cut will do if it was sharpened.

One thing you changed (explain): When I came home, I made sure all are sharp... set a box for used ones to be sharpened and a box of sharpened ring cutters.

One sentance of advice: Thrive, do not just survive.

Last outing: Hunting trip in Louisiana
I gonna start with what went wrong;
Arrived at someones elses hunting camp, new ground for me, late in the day, was told we were just going to ride around on 4 wheelers and check out the area for the next morning hunt. Approx 3;00pm
Good idea, so far, right.....Wrong.

Left the fanny pack, coat, coveralls, in my truck, grabbed the rifle (in case we see a deer on the trip), got in the Mule with the owner, and off we went.
He show us around, but then dropped me off at a stand, good ways from where we started, said he would be back after checking out a couple of other spots.
Was wearing my hooded sweatshirt, hat, boots, jeans, and carrying my rifle.

After sitting there about 30 minutes, I heard a shot off in the distance, then saw the Mule pass me on a different trail, heading off?

I waited trying to get my bearings, had a general idea where I was, but really didn't have enough information on which way to head out if necessary.

Had my compass pinned on the inside of my hooded SS, BUT hadn't checked it BEFORE we set out.

What went right: The pockets of hooded SS had gloves, knife (folding hunting), package of tissues, Carmex lip balm (mix the two, make good fire starting material), mag fire starter, a couple of lighters, about 6 pieces of hard candy, compass pinned inside. Plastic water bottle about 3/4 full.

Belt and jean pockets had cell, (No service), small multi tool and another lighter in a leather pouch, wallet, Zippo lighter, small screw shut match box with about 6 aspirins, HBP pills and about 4 Tums. Some change and recipes.

Rifle has stock elastic band with 8 rounds of .270 shells, and para-cord sling.

Time passed, sun going down, getting colder, front coming in, so I try to pick up on road noise, 4 wheeler noise and sun direction to try to determine which trail to hike back.
Still nothing?
So now I getting upset with myself for leaving 1/2 my clothing and equipment back at the truck, and for not getting the lay of the land before taking off.

But in taking stock of what I had with me, even though I didn't carry everything, I'm still in good shape except to starting to get chilly.
This wasn't too different than getting myself lost, or broke down 4 wheeler, canoe flipped over, all the stuff that happens when ever you don't think it will.

More time passed, got dark, still nothing, was wishing I had my flashlight(in the fanny pack) with me, but remembered that the multi tool had small led flashlight, as one of the tools.
So at approx 7;30 I started hiking out, on the trail that I had seen the last 4 wheeler head.
Was walking for about 10 min, and saw a light, the mule with the owner was heading out to pick me up.

Turned out that he had killed a buck right after we had gotten there, had gone and got my SIL to help him look for it.
Took him a while, found it, hauled it back and cleaned it, as it was warm to start with 70's, but had dropped to low 40's as I was headed out.
Then he headed back out to pick me up.

What I changed when I got back: added Mini mag light back on belt, and checked the camp's map and compass for orientation, distance, and location of stands.
A compass doesn't do you any good if you don't know what direction you went in and which direction you need to get back.

Turned out I would have had a mile and a 1/2 hike by going back the way we had come in, rather then about 1/2 mile by heading directly back by a direct trail. Maybe more as thaere were a lot of side trails.

So this wasn't a real problem, more of a PITA, but did kinda cause me to do some mental work on problem solving.

One word of advice: Rely on your self, not necessarily your gear.

My last outing was my last trip to camp with my son for a weekend on the snowmachines. It must have been an okay trip because my son decided to stay with his grandpa when I went home.

So, one thing right. I brought plenty of snacks, water and warm clothes (socks,etc) so I never had to leave a ride early with a complaining son.

One thing wrong. I didnt go over the sleds as thorough as I should have and had to make a trailside repair to keep the gas on the inside of the tank on my kids ride.

One thing I changed. Tough one..We just kind of "wing it" with lots of the less important details so lots of things got changed before they ever left the planning stage. I guess next time there is a group like that up there I will plan the meals better, that way we arent still fighting over what to cook at 9 at night.

One sentance of advice. An 11 year old boy with determination to ride can make sure his old man goes to bed sore and tired every single night!

I wondered around another 30 minutes before I could find my camp again. By then the sun was starting to crack and the stupid part was I could see the spot I wanted to hunt from my camp. It was that close! Had I just marked a way point on the GPS the day before I would have walked right to it.

Next time you go there to hunt. Tie a piece of string to the spot you want to hunt at and then walk back to your camp and tie the other end to something at camp. Then the next morning all you have to do is follow the string to the hunting spot.

Or hire a blind guy to lead you through the dark to your spot.

The next time I just camped where I wanted to hunt. It was a lot easier. I just called the turkeys into the pot and put the lid on.

I went to my trapping partners house for dinner last night. The plan was to drink some rum, talk, more rum, grill some ribeye's, more rum, more talk, be home before midnight.

Go home before best friend passes out and you get into a theological discussion with his wife that lasts until 3 am.

Good post and brings up a real problem when it comes to group dynamics.

After years of planning hunting, fishing, camping rendezvous camping, modern camping, even extended stays at some one's "Place" for my self and family, not so bad, but add a group of people, problems start.

For large groups, sometimes up to 24 people, but mostly just 4 or two.

We ended up having "meetings" laying out a loose menu for type of each meal, Breakfast, lunch, supper........But mostly just 2 meals a day.
Loose in the respect that each day need not be planned but, provided the necessary "fixins" for each meal, number of people, for how ever long planned.

Hunting "crews" get the dynamics down pretty fast, generally planned out so the "who, what, when, and where" is pretty much nailed down, especially if a long out of town trip, is planned

Problems do arise when you do have a "Place" cabin, cottage, homestead, camp, whatever, as there are some people in the world that expect you to run a B&B or guided hunting trips.
Ground rules need to be in place.

In groups that are not planned out, can be a real bummer with bad feeling, and friendships strained.

All this should be considered in a BOS, when the plans may or may not be layed out, or supplies in place, making things even more strained and unpleasent.

Pet peave,...... ready to roll, equiptment checked, loaded, fueled up.....And the one guy, and you know who that seems to always be,....... Says, "Hey, I need to stop and fuel up, and get some munchies,......" while several truck, trailers etc are all line up in a gas station at O-dark thirty waiting on them.

<--- sadly I do not do well in groups when camping or doing my thing....guess that makes me an anti-social type...I do however like having a few very close friends up at the cabin, people I know and trust. The new rule is, no friends of friends until they are vetted from being arses.....caught the one guy shooting at a red tailed hawk...his gun was taken away and he was sent on his way. I told him to come buy and get his gun any time at my place, he never did.

Right: cut loose those that cause trouble at my cabin.

Wrong: allowed them to live after they messed up my (our) outdoors time.

Changed: My cell number and only gave it to actual friends.

Advice: Keep your real friends close.

Did Wrong: Wore wrong shoes for -11* outing.

Would Change: Stop washing hands in -11* snow on way back to cabin.

Advise: Don't grip a door knob that is -11* with cold wet hand.

Ok, so on the most recent out and about to the woods, It was snowy, rainy and kind of miserable so we ended up at a famous name brand BoooooFayyyyy. I have not been to one in many years. I was truly out of my element. We just happened to stroll in there at a time when the Cleveland Ladies Bridge Club decided to go out for dinner (Approx 70 of them). I wanted to go to this place because on Veterans Day, they serve free dinners to Vets, an honorable thing and I wanted to help pay them back a little.

What I did right: Trying to help pay back a company that honors vets.

What I did wrong: This comes in 3 parts........

1. When I had seen the crowd of ladies (all somewhat plumpish) from the bridge club, I should have turned around and we should have went somewhere else.

2. I should have stayed away from the Pasta, Prime Rib and Dessert areas as I knew there was risk of harm to myself or at least a few mean and nasty looks much less a errant fork stab or two. The dessert area looked like it was WWIII, I was truly amazed at just how much cake can be placed on one single plate and balanced for the 35 feet to her table. The prime rib area looked like a pack of hungry jackles tore into the poor beast and the guy with the carving knife and fork was against the wall muttering something about fear and that he is not paid enough for this job. The Pasta area kind of looked like the food fight scene from "Animal House."

3. Out of respect, I did not carry my piece in with me. As I went in for a last piece of French Apple Pie, I did not see the lady behind me going for the same lone piece. I actually had it on the pie server and she nudged by me and placed her plate under the pie server untensil and bumped me and the piece fell onto her plate. At that moment, I had flashes of "Kill or be killed," reached for my piece and remembered I left it in the lock box in the car. The look I gave the woman sent chills up and down her spine, she looked back at me as if to say "Sucker," and then she waddled off to her pack of jackle friends and found comfort with them all the while pointing at me as they laughed and giggled at my then empty plate. She tore into that pie as if it was a bloody piece of meat. * makes mental note to pass gas as I walk past their table, it would kind of be like a Nappalm burn...start at the right moment, let it waft through the area and vector out to my tables location......in my mind I kept hearing a distant ground based radio... MikeMike, drop it at your six, drop it at your six.....and get the hell out of there.....

Things I would change: Check surroundings prior to going into the place. I would have noticed the 2 tour buses. Once in, I should of had the strength to tell the GF and son that we are going somewhere else. I should have created a 25 foot perimeter burn area and placed flankers and pickets so a clear area would have been available. Place die.... errrr DYE pack traps at the dessert area.

Did wrong: should have taken the climbing Axe & bayonet.

Did Wrong: Should of bought 15 bundles of slab wood.....

Did Right: Got to the lumber mill early and got the best of what they had as to slab woods, table top roughs and some other needed log/wood items for the furniture....

I would change: Next year am going to cut down a lot of trees up in PA and get the slab wood from those and sell the lumber to the Amish that are right there.
