View Full Version : I am a realist, NOT a survivalist...............

Yesterday, Sunday 2-27-2011, some of my better customers were gatherd here at the gun shop, each having their own coffee mug on the pegged panel just for them. They scooched up on the hand made rustic stools and we were discussing various current and past events.
One of the guys stated, well look at ole Mike there (Me), he is preparred for almost anything, he is a survivalist.... I grumbled something like STFU. Then I blurted NO, I am a realist, not a survivalist....In Ohio, you say survivalist, it conjours up thoughts of an armed militia performing their boot camps and such.
I went on to explained why I am a realist and not a survivalist. I prep for natural, man-made disaters, I stave myself from inflation, I trade mostly rather than buy/sell things. I keep the needed items for existance after an event. Natural, man-made events happen every day, just not on a global scale 100% of the time, they are usually located in BFE somewhere, and that BFE is distant until it is your area, your land, your life.
BAD things happen.... end of story and you are either realistically preparred or you are not and even with preperations, you still may not fare well.....although I believe the better preparred folks will have a better chance at getting through events.
The guys kept making jokes about all my levels of kits and how I go about practicing skills needed in those events. So, I generally asked them each to explain how they would "SURVIVE" a long term power outage.....their answers were commical if not just plain old sad... One said he has a few candles, some soups/candy and an ice chest he can put perishables in...because he said look at Katrina, they wer handing out Ice and MRE's... I added yes, that was after 96 hours at best......he went silent. The next guy said well, I have a 1000 watt gen and will do ok... I answered OK... that will run about 2/3 of your fridge and NO lights.... a standard household running LEAN needs at least 5000 watts to run 1/2 a day if they are saving foods and living a somewhat normal life.....then he went silent....the next guy said he will just travel to where there is power and come back when it is all back on...(I said absolutely nothing to that, it was just that sad).
I showed them all a portion of what I have done to be self relient at a moments notice.....NONE of them saw the need to prepare like that. All of them said the gov't will come in and help them. They to a person said familiy will come and help them. They all basically said I am nuts to put all this effort and costs into SURVIVING an event.
In the course of the worlds history, there have been 42 Billion people lived and died.....in that time, events have happend, history shows us this. They think I am crazy for being a "Realist," and believeing that bad things can and do happen. I think they are crazy for not being preparred for even simple events.
* steps off of my soap box and goes to sip my coffee and make a dovetail on a sight base for one of them non-believers :) .......
My wife teasingly calls me a wack job but when some new disturbing piece of news comes over the airwaves she says something like"things are getting real scary". I just smile and say that my preps are just prudent and she half agrees with me. I think like most Americans she can't fathom life here getting that bad. When I hear people say the government will take care of them I just laugh its so pathetic. Saddly, people do look at folks like we here as some sort of right wing nuts. But when they are hungry or scared who are they going to look to?

I get the same thing from some friends and family. They think I'm just a little bit off, but they are starting to come around due to current events (food prices, unrest in the sandbox, etc.). I have a few close to me that are fully on board with what I'm doing, I just wish they would start doing it too instead of saying "We're coming to your house when the SHTF". My wife is pretty much on board, but she gets kinda irritated when I have stacks of dry canned foods covering the kitchen table LOL

I hear you too... I am pretty overt about my prep and have a very secure "repell neighbors / strangers" plan set into place......most folks say that is rude, I should help everyone who comes to the door. I feel differently. I do all I can to help folks NOW, teach, show and even help them do.....after SHTF....that nice guy in me closes, slammed shut...gone...
It's a very good post, Mike. Our last big snow the news folks were saying areas could be without power for an extended period because of ice and winds. The afternoon before it hit my wife and her co-workers were talking about what they needed to do. Her co-workers were saying the very same thing you outlined above; candles, bread, milk, etc. and they were still at the store so they needed to stop on the way home. My wife told them she didn't have to pick up everything. We'd be warm, well fed and watching the news on TV power or no power. She's finely coming around!
I agree......Excellent post, Mike.....................BH51....

You hit it square on the head. You could have used the term Prepper
OhioGrizzLapp

If I used the term "Prepper" with these folks that come into the shop (Urban Cowboys and Weekend Paint Rambo's) they would think I was talking about a new dish over at the Carrabbas Italian Grill. So I just used terms they know.. survivalist, mountain man, realist, survival pack etc....

Good post.
I don't talk about preparedness with most people.
"What are you preparing for?"They ask.
So, I simplify it for them and say " I'm preparing to eat."

I quit trying to explain or justify anything I did back around 1979-1982, somewhere around there.
I have been taking a hard core approach for several years now. When/if disaster comes they can die if they really want too. I will be happy to do without the competition for rescources and they do not need to know about mine.
I am not trying to convert them into anything or prepare them for anything. I have no pity for the unprepared, they had the same chance as everyone else.
Most don't really NEED to know and the difficulty of trying to explain to someone that does not care is not worth the effort.

I do not put my self in any category, day to day life is survival enough.
Being a little older and seeing what has happened in the past, also tells me that "IT" (fill in your own whatever) has happened and will again, and I would rather be self reliant as best as I can for myself and family.
Helping out comes naturally, to a point, and only you know where that point is.
I just chose to not worry about it too much, but do enjoy my hobbies and "collections".
So if that is prepping, my folks, and grand folks didn't call it that, then I guess I am a prep-per?

That is very true Winter, I have a great many folks I have been trying to help learn to make a new income after losing a job. A couple are doing real well with it actually, the others say it is too much fussing around making things. To each their own I guess, but if after SHTF happens, and they show up for a hand out all I can promise them is a free burial or a pyre....... I will be in no mood to be a hand out kind of guy.

I'm a lot more comfortable being prepped, the only way I know the grid is down?My grandkids show up to watch TV.They love coming out to the woods and starting a fire, cooking hot dogs, and hiking.Duing the last blizzard I babysat for them and they went sledding,it's great knowing your self sufficient and I feel it's like insurance, cannot wait to garden and watch the changing of seasons, prepping, for me,is like I grew up in the fifties.A good life of enjoyment?

I agree Bob, finding out "YES U CAN," feels very good, especially when you help do it for friends and family. I truly love teaching people how to do things that can make them more self sufficient, more self improving. I think it is my true calling and not being an Engineer for a living. Sadly, I grew up the son of a banker, middle class, but maybe an edge higher. I went to great schools, had a wonderful military experience and have worked or served since I was 16. All of that done absolutly nothing for me, for what is important in life.

Prepper, survivalist, hoarder, crazy, extreeme, whacko, nut job and conspiriacy theorist are just a few labels given to me and my wife... since we made the move up here we are now just known as Alaskans! :)
What most "preppers" do elsewhere for just in case is our daily lifestyle (by choice)... I stopped caring what others thought about how I live long ago. That being said... I look at the unprepared and the people who turn their noses up at us and think... they must be future casulties and leave it at that.

I was raised in the country. The people who I knew, when I was growing up, were farmers, and the like. I mean old school, small family farms. Where you raised, killed, butchered and cooked/cured your own meat. You grew and canned your own veggies.
What some people call "survivalist", or "preppers" are who I grew up thinking were just plain ol' country folk. LOL

Great post OGL. You talk of repelling your neighbors. I have no problem with that. It reminds me of an old twilight zone episode. The air raid sirens were going off and only one man in the neighborhood was prepared. The ended up breaking into his families bomb shelter with an axe. In the end the air raid was cancelled. We each must be ready for whatever comes along. We can inform others, but it is up to them to use that information for their benefit. I am amazed how many people think the government will take care of us. Has everybody forgotten Katrina? I have used my job as a deputy to stock pile arms and ammunition along with food from our own garden. When SHTF we can only depend on ourselves. Again, great post and keep informing.

I'm not a kid(under 60) anymore and in Appalachia we have been living off the land and making it just fine. I can easily remember when we didn't have electricity, used a coal stove, canned and butchered what we ate. The rest of the world calls us hillbillies or Rednecks. Not enough room to post how ready we are to not just survive but live and enjoy it. I can't think of any name that would cover us, just people who do what we have done for several hundred years.

As a "Camo clown survivalist" you should know that is not the full extent of my preparations. I did all the home preps and it is just another level of preparation. I avoid militia groups but have contact with individuals in them. Some are real nut jobs, others are very serious folks and should not be discounted lightly. They will be just one more problem to contend with for you city folk. Historically many are enlisted to help restore order and lack the training or restraint of normal government agencies.
You guys have had a militia used up there? We have a lot of them around here. I don't think any have been enlisted around here for anything other than mug shots.

Not here but as you know we have Special Forces that speak other languages to be able to use militias around the world as force multipliers. The military will not collapse or if they do will be the last. They will be trying to gain control of whatever happens. I've said before it will not be so much a matter survival as long as you are willing to conform to whatever regime is in control. IMO it will be a choice between maintaining freedom through self reliance or standing in bread lines in total submision to whatever regime is in control. Logistics will be the major factor.

The way I see it, unless I'm part of some large counter group, there's no way, no how, I can successfully maintain my freedom through self reliance. Not against any organized regime or militia--if they decide to come after me.
Flying under the radar is the only way and I haven't figured that one out. Heck, I'm just learning how to fly.

This why I made mention of logistics. There will be much out of thier control. Ports, Transportation, food supplies, hospitals, communications will have priority. They will have thier hands full with that and wilderness areas should be low priority. I work in one of the 15 ports deemed vital to national security and it will be secured but where I live is hardly worth the bother except to those of us that live there and I'm sure some form of community guard would be established quickly. Not all the militias or groups will be bad when formed to defend thier community and there is precident for this but unless you live there you will not be welcomed and probably have all your stuff confiscated. It is the militias promoting some politcal agenda that are the real nut jobs. It will be a fight for survival if it gets real bad. Up to a point people will work together.
Theoretically speaking of course.

I prep for all of it, as things go bad in one day and you cannot control what the issue is.....and "HELP" comes way too slow. Regardless of what the issue is, I do know me and mine will be ok if we survive the initial event. Katrina proved it to me, even in a weather event, armed thugs will try to take what is yours and will KILL you and yours even if they get it or not. If I am going to be a statistic, I will be damned if I am going down begging for my life, I will go down kicking arse fighting and I will take that fight to them, rather than them to me, I will not be on my knees begging or negotiating for mercy to some thug that cannot even spell "Weather." :)
There is a difference, Mike, between prepping for it and believing it will happen. I'm perfectly content to toss wasted money at some survival preps because even though I don't believe for a minute they are likely to occur I know there is an outside change they could.

I have always felt comfortable have prepped for things.
Earliest examples is getting caught up short on something, seeing how a little problem can result in a major PITA, and vowing never allowing that to happen to me again.
That being said, and being older, having a lot of seemingly small disasters happen, (wait long enough and the possibility of just about anything can happen), you tend to accumulate a lot of gear, food, hardware, tools, skills to over come these things.
This is just in daily life.
Now you add in travel, hunting, fishing, hiking, driving, boating, conditions expand past the fire, shelter, water, food.
Taking it further is responsibility for family, and animals, necessary preps, gear, as well as marketable skills, (job) and financial responsibility.
With these basic "preps" ( I really don't like that term) in place, we haven't even started on disaster's,(mother nature, as well as personal) sickness, loss of job, spouse, child,
Then we get to military attack, financial melt down, civil unrest, and of course zombi's, EMP attack, asteroids, etc.
Your opportunity to collect guns, gear, tools, but most importantly knowledge of skills and assets, is important, but not needing a lot of your accumulations as they are finite, is more important.
As a young person right now, and had the epiphany of possible scenarios, I guess I would panic, as newbies seem to do, wanting to know everything, by being told, not doing their own research, trials, etc and collection the "Best" of everything, gear.
Hope that makes sense....
The fact is I just like guns, gear, and extra supplies...and how to get more, if nessessary.
Use to collect stamps, but you can't shoot them, eat them, keep you warm, ride them...etc.....You get the picture.
So it's not wasted money, but an investment.

I believe bad things will happen, history prooves me right on that aspect....current events in the last 2 years prove me right.... weather, political, health, economics and environmental. They happen, they happen when you least expect it and will usually happen when you are least prepped. I truly believe the gov't would rather subdue a populas rather than be overthrown, even though the constitution allows for it.
Rick, I feel it in my bones...and I mean that....something major is going to happen to us here in the USA/World wide that will affect all of us in a very bad way. Do I want it, NO, hell no, but I think I am prepped and ready if it doesn't kill me right off the bat.
What will it be.... I am tossing around 2-3 things, world wide flu like health issues, unseen in the sun larger than 3 mile wide earth impactor east or central USA, total world economic collapse....... on all three, we are close, very close and have been for awhile. You seem to be a smart person, I am sure you can look the issues up.
Don't quite get the difference.
Do you have renters insurance? Do you know something will happen? Do you think it's likely? Are you willing to take the risk? I don't have any reason to believe anything will happen to my house. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that the odds are pretty good nothing will. But I still have insurance.

Same here Sarge, a survivor is a good term. Yeah it is all insurance, but the fun I have had getting prepped is worth every penny and second I have done it. Just the people I have met in going through prepdome is worth it. The sep of the chaff from the seed has also been very well worth it.
The best feeling I have ever had in doing prep, is teaching people things like fire... the look on someones face the first time they make fire w/o matches or a lighter is worth all time spent teaching him or her. Also teaching the rustic furniture making, they sit down in a chair they made with a knife and they just get that pumped chest look to them.
Do I prep to prep, sure, but I also do it as a form of enjoyment and entertainment as well.
I made a map of most of the dangers around me.....shocking to know so many things can go wrong at a moments notice....I am smack in the middle of three major rail lines, 2 Nuke power plants with in 25 miles east and west, a HUGE DOW Chem plant, 52 tank gas storage tanks within 7 miles......the assessment took weeks and after it all.... just shook my head as to why am I even here... and the answer to that is my parents. We have 100's of tons of SC through here because of all the plating companies. 1 16oz of soda pop on 1/4 lb of SC will take out close to 100K people here because of population density where the plants are, most of them are on the east side from me and winds head east here. Yet it is handled like it was salt and pepper. We have many very small local accidents with-in plants with SC.
There is a book named "They Died Crawling" by John Bellamy.
Amazing accounts of 15 disasters here in Cleveland, but would be applicable to any major industrial city. The title story depicts the East Ohio Gas tanks in the center of Cleveland blowing up and a large square area literally being deludged with flying insulation pieces caught on fire and setting many hoods on fire. You can still go into the tremont hood and look at the top sides of brick buildings....they are all scorched and roofs repaired.

OGL - a friend was professionally refinishing a Loveless knife from the 60's. The guy that owned it got it from his dad, who paid $1000 for it. He was offered $9,000 for it after it was cleaned up. He declined. A week later Bob Loveless passed away and he was offered $30,000 for it. I don't think he'll get it (at least any time soon), but he's holding out for 50K.

Crash, I was shocked two months ago at how much it is worth, same with the Scagle knife collection I have.....just absolutely stunned. I was not keeping up with values much over the past 15 years or so. I am not sure to sell them or keep them. All my stuff, items, gold/silver, cash, things and crap will be all my daughters when I pass. She is kept aware at what I have and what stuff is worth, so she will not be taken by slick willys.
I bought my Loveless Gut Hook Skinner at a DFW gun and knife show in 1993 for $1400, truly a perfect knife, ancient mastadon handle. I had it up on the wall here at the shop in a case just for display since about 2002, then I had a company come in and assess the value of my estate 2 months ago. Times truly have changed by way of value of classic and vintage items. I am torn between send all this crap to auction like Christies or Fairborn....or just hold on to it all for Jessica and let her sell or keep what she wants.
I am slowly weaning my way away from many of the safe queen guns/knives/gadgets and getting very good values for them on gunbroker so far. The 4 classic cars in the out building I am for sure selling and have had some good offers, the motorcycles I am dang near giving away to a guy here that has a cycle shop....I am keeping the home built plane for awhile......I am pretty sure I am going to keep the gold/silver in case I need a burger after the whatever balloon goes up. I have so much OLDER classic ammo here, just not sure what to do with it all. I have been selling them onsey twosey....but that is hardly making a dent.
I closed the gun shop for the season this past Friday so I can start gearing up the furniture, sticks and various shows and schools/classes I teach. Hopefully I get to do some back woods stay time up at the cabin, will have to see how all is going.
I personally think people are nuts paying what they do for classic and vintage items.

A "what to do with" an estate thread would be a good idea...........
But so far, my experiance,.. most siblings, kids, in-laws, out laws, and other sundry recipiants of various estates seem to prefer CASH!
Good thing for me is that I don't prefer cash, but rather, would rather continue 'various collections" or "stuff".
When in "clean up mode", I hear a lot,"here just take this stuff"
I do, however, seem to notice that my thinking may be getting out of hand. LOL.

Yeah, sorry, weak moment, need to take a testosterone pill,.... watching to much HGTV lately, getting closer to my sensitive side.
All BS aside I still have a truck load of encyclopedias loaded with no home, so I guess it's just frustration....or maybe not feel well, or maybe.....Never mind.

LOL Scott, you gotta come get it to take it.....I do happen to have a bunch of stuff I am giving away to those that can haul it.....
Aweeee sorry Rick, the guns are already on gunbroker.....well most of them anyways, there are few I am having a hard time of even thinking of getting rid of...but I know I have to....
What is driving all of this.....GF and her son are planning on moving in with me... so I need to down size the stuff, up size the spare room and make the place 6 year old proof.....that will be the hardest part as damn near everything I own will either cut you, shoot you, blow you up or trap you.......He is NOT allowed in the gun shop at all, not even to visit and say Hi.
I spent the winter making his bed room furniture.... bunk beds, dressor, desk, chairs, tables, shelves and a scrap leather rug. She will just have to deal with how my main bedroom and MY bathroom is....
The kitchen, living room and game room will be hers to decorate...I am just glad she has the same sense of northwest rough look that I do.
My daughter questioned me for hours on why I want a GF and son in the same house.....she consideres it all her territory and has marked it all LOL PLUS she hates small kids....she considers them blowgun targets. She is 22 and off to school....she is affraid pam will change her laire LOL She said it is NOT realistic for me having a full time night women here in the same house.
The son I want here to go get fireplace wood in the winter.... he will come in handy I am sure.
Making the man child haul maple sap.......gotta grow em up tough.....sooner or later he will lose those glasses LOL

Realist Moment - We have a Brita water filter pitcher style that we use every day. Cleveland water blows and it is just a small way to make it healthy and drinkable.
Problem - Every week, a black/green mold forms at the inside bottom of the pitcher.
What we have tried to do to fix it - We wash it out weekly with a small amount of Clorox Chlorine Bleach, sea salt scrub and over night sit with the bleach water in it. None of this seems to help, the mold/mildew reforms in the same areas. We wrote to Brita and they sent us a $10 coupon and an appology. TOTALLY NOT ACCEPTABLE
Any ideas from you all on how to either fix it or what to do with the Brita company.

I usually don't show anyone anything, just hand them what they need went some one says, "Anyone have a flashlight", or "I could use a light", or "What are we gonna tie this up with?" or "How are we gonna get this log out of the trail?"
Actually I kinda got this for DW as her purse have enough supplies for 72 hours anywhere on the planet,....or a least it seems so......LOL

I get the same thing. As an example, I was at my daughters house for a BBQ and we were setting up a Gazebo she recently purchased. After we were done she said she also had bought a hammock and wished that I had brought my truck as she knew I had all kinds of rope in my truck. The look of disbelief as I pulled some paracord out of my pocket and doubled it up to tie the hammock between two coconut trees was classic. "Seriously Dad? You have rope in your pocket? Who does that?" LOL

LOL, Yeah, I get that all the time.
In my HVAC service career, I always had wire nuts, 1/4-5/16 self tapping screws, contactor screws, (all of the small stuff that you drop and lose, making a trip down/up the ladder again necessary).....small role of tape, and a couple of what ever you could think of in my jacket pockets, along with calc, pen, pad, electricity tester/cap light, mini screw driver........etc.
Service truck was a large drivable version of the same, if I had to go and get a part of hardware for a job, I always got two, so I would have one on the truck.
Got so bad, I was having other guys call and ask if it had "thus and such" on my truck....so they didn't have to go back to the shop, or store.
You see it all started as a young man, Boy Scout, "Be Prepared" ...Took it serious then and still do.

Hunter, same here, made it to life scout and then was too old, went to Explorers but not too long after I enlisted in the Navy.... have been a prepper since about age 10 or so. Was funny one time, my dad went to my closet to get something when I was like 12 and he noticed a packed Boy Scout pack, ready to go. He sat me down and asked if I was planning to run away and I was like why??? he said he had seen the pack ready to go....I actually laughed and said No Dad, the boy scouts taught me to have my pack ready to go for all occassions....he was like sweating on his forehead and was so relieved...he then took me camping that weekend and I was ready to go in 5 minutes...WHY....because I was prepped LOL
