Bullet casters, anyone doing any lately?

The weather wasn't to bad today, so headed out to the garage, fired up the wood stove and the casting pot.

i like the the outside temp to be above freezing as when running the casting pot, I leave the door open, and run a fan to kinda dissipate the fumes.

Brought back a couple of 5 gal buckets of wheel weights from down south, SIL is helping out in a tire shop, and I was given what ever I could carry.
Gotta keep your eyes open for opportunities.

Presorted the buckets they had, picked out all the iron, ones with zinc (some are marked), the real small weights, and other weights that didn't pass my "scratch test".

If they don't get a good scratch on them, they don't seem to melt too well, and the mix gets mushy. I just use an awl for this.

Processed about 30 lbs for now.

Then started pouring some 200gr .35 cal round nose with my new mold, that I got from one of y'all.
First time I tried a steel mold, most of mine are Lee aluminium molds.
Was pleased with it, just took a while longer to warm it up.

Poured about 200+ made the rest of the lead into ingots for later.
Bullets are lubed with Lee's Alox lube and are drying right now.

Then need to size and install the gas checks, gonna use the same gas checks and sizer as the .357.

When dry, it's time to move on to loading up about 60 empty brass for the .35 Rem.

Side note, I still have a standing order for 100 Sierra 200 gr round nose bullets from Cabelas, been waiting for about 2 years, come May????

I have a good supply of RCBS 314299 cast bullets for my 03a3 and I just finished casting about 3000, 200 Gr 45 ACP bullets. Wheel weights melt at 621 degress and zinc melts at 787degrees. I try to catch all the zinc wheel weights but I keep my pot set at 675 degrees and the zinc ETC floats on top to be skimmed off.

Hunter, I cast my own for .38/357, I too use wheel weights. I do however use a lead filter (basically a flour sifting sieve), this honestly takes out all the harder lead and other metal objects and as long as you tap it right after sifting the lead, it stays open. When I do this, the lead comes out to about a #2 alloy. I then remelt and pour my casts for the bullets. I 90% use mostly 150 LSWC in Kieth Style and use an auto sizer/luber I bought from a retired ammo maker. In a year, due to shooting in CAS .38 class for pistol and rifle, I go through about 15,000 rounds a year. I reuse cases w/o trimming or media tumbling, they get washed in denatured alcohol and when I size the cases, I handle each one to check for cracks and other issues.

I use a 50/50 mix of liquid Alox/Beeswax for bullet lube. This really works well for leading issues as well as keeping the guns clean.

The guns I keep clean after each CAS shoot or practice with an ultrasonic cleaner filled with Kroil as the liquid. I just take the grips/stocks off and dump em in the cleaner and walk away, lead, soot, grunge all come off....I actually reuse any lead that is trapped in the screen. I use a piece of gutter and closed it at the ends to tak the rifle and the gutter is attached directly to the ultrasonic cleaner. The guns come out clean as a whistle, lubed and ready to rock and roll. They drip dry into the cleaner and then Just a wipe off with a cotton clothe and they are ready to store. No need for bore, forcing cone brushes or patches.

OGL, I haven't used a lead filter, but I can see where it would help.
I too like to process the weights, or lead first, pour in ingots, then remelt when I'm ready to do a batch.
I guess I'm amazed how much dross comes out even on the second meat.

Beans, I agree with keeping the temps down, not only do I get the 'mushy" stuff out, but seem to have a nice pour, with out frosting and base collapse.

I keep the pure, or at least close to pure as possible, for the ML round balls, and Minis, so my stock is divided up.
Wheel weights are more for modern bullets, and i do like the gas checks on anything faster then 1500 fps

Interestingly enough,
We use to use lead as a quench for heat treating wire as a process, and I would buy truck loads, #5000 on each pallet, in #100 pigs.

Lead bath furnace may have had #20000 at a time, all melted, and kept at 800 degrees.
Top was covered with Formica insulation and the bath had to cleaned of dross every shift. Dross was shipped back in 55 gal drums for reprocessing.

Operators used to pour a lot of fishing jigs, down rigger balls, and a lot of bullets. Never had to worry about lead.
Wish I had some of that now, but I gotta tell ya it was a real PITA knocking off a hunk from one of those bars to fit in a pot.

I would pour some into #2 ingots then bring home and remelt, saw a lots of crap in it from the iron wire and insulation media.

That got me started on at least a double melt.

You can tell with the scratch test how soft it is, and after a while you can kinda tell by the mfg name on it, or even some marked, Zn, or Fe etc.
Really cuts down on the scrap in the melt pot.

I cast bullets for my 45 cal. CVA..........REAL's I think they're called...
250 grain (I think) and I use a Lee mold...Given my age, I bought a
lifetime supply of lead in a single industrial-grade lengthy bar for $5
from a scrap/salvage yard...It's alittle too hard for maximum expansion
but yeilds worthy results on Whitetail, dispite.........................BH51..

H-63; Let us know how well they work. Are you shooting them out of a Marlin 336 with micr-groove barrel? If they work well I'd like to know the mold number, etc. as that's a rifle of mine I'd like to cast bullets for. Presently I cast for my 357 magnum/38special, 45/70, 44 magnum and 44 cap and ball revolver (200 grain bullet) plus my 50 and 54 cal. muzzleloaders (round balls).

MMM, I have heard that you "Don't" want to shoot cast bullets in a micro groove rifle barrel.
My short answer is I would if I had a Micro groove barrel, but I shooting a Remington Model 600, short action bolt gun, so I don't have to deal with it.

Some points to consider, micro groove are not as deep as normal rifling, but a lot more of them 16 I think, then say the normal 6 or 5 grooves.
So some say, ...Need to cast over size? To make up the Dia difference between deep and shallow.
Another point, I've heard is that cast bullets will lead up the micro grooves? Doesn't make any sense if the bore is over sized?

Factory speeds for a .35 Rem are about 2000+/- fps depending on the load, close to my limit I would want to shoot w/cast un-jacketed bullets, and I do use gas checked bullets.

The article I posted does discuss Bernelle hardness at like 12, so now your looking at alloying.
I use wheel weights which are mostly alloyed, but unknown properties

You could really get nuts and do heat treating and quenches and such, all kind of methods and formulas etc, out there if you want to dig for them.

May be I need a Bernelle tester? and if I'm going to mess with .308 and .311 with higher speeds, I might spend the money for one.

The barrel leading is also a barrel condition issue.

Now the whole reason that I'm casting these is simply can't seem to find .200 gr round nose bullets, have had a standing order for two years, and nothing.

And I do like making my home made.... "ready rolls".

The mold number, expensive, as it's an RCBS rather than Lee is from Midway.
Mold number is 35-200-fn, order number is 044-82028 @ $67.77
Handles are o44-8025 @ $33.48

Thanks. I always thought the 35 Remington would be agood candidate for cast bullets. I use pure lead for blackpowder firearms and wheel weights for everything else. Gas checks stopped the leading problem I had in my 44 magnum.

Good luck on acquiring some 200 grain jacketed bullets.

Bout the only thing I've cast of late is some 12 gauge punkin balls.

My set up is no where as sophisticated as some. I have a lowly Lee bottom pour lead pot, a RCBS sizer/lubricator and a bunch of molds. Before the Lee pot I used a plumbers pot and a ladle.

Pretty much what I using, works well, for me.
I'm keeping my eyes open for the plumbers pot, just to process wheel weights, maybe keep some of the crap out of the pout spout, that causes it to drip unless I clean out.

LOL, yes it is, especially with a 6 cavity mold.

I have the Lee 12 gauge sulg mold as well, 1 oz, ran off about 100 the last time around.
Shoot pretty well, made and sized to load in the power pistons plastic wads and trap hulls.
Use just a old Lee Loader in 12 ga rather than a press. (they don't make or offer the shotgun Lee loaders anymore?)

I can't tell you how many times I have gotten a call from some one that wanted me to haul away old ammo, and such, as they didn't want it in the house.
Some had to be destroyed as it was corroded, rusty, nasty.

Some ammo was old and I didn't have anything to shoot it in, but made good trading stock...and if there was enough of it, maybe pick up something to shoot in in....After all it wasn't my fault LOL, right? Just trying to be helpful.

Lots of good stuff, though, even got a call from a friend that was a local detective, wanting to know if I could use a 5 gal bucket of 2-2/4 .410 shells.
Still have a bunch left, but had to leave several hundred behind as the brass was rusted and split.

They take it out to a pit with other ordnance to burn and explode it.

No you read that wrong....I had heard that, but wouldn't hesitate personally.

The stick on Wheel weights are almost pure lead as is the old window weights, that was used in the olden (Ricks's) days to counter balance the windows. I scrounge old fishing weights from yard sales, swap meets Etc.
I drop my bullets directly from the mold into cold water which gives me BHN of around 15-18 where straight air cooled weight weights are around 10-12 BHN and pure lead is close to 5 BHN
The addition of 50/50 solder or acid free solder usually helps the metal fill out the mold amoung other things.

Always keep your eyes open, for linotype if in scrap yards, also a harder alloy.

My skimmer is a home made sheet metal spoon the my FIL made.
Got a couple of different sizes, seems like he's watching me as I'm working.

My mold's for the .45lc,(2 different kinds) and .41mag ( I don't own a .41, making them for a friend) showed up last week.
So this weekend Sat., processed up a half a 5 gal bucket of wheel weights, (melt and clean dross), poured into ingots for later use.

Today, cleaned the pot out, pour spout had been dripping from built up crud. (wish I could find a plumbers melt pot for precessing, less crud in the spout.)

Then poured about 200 .452 dia. 230gr for the Long Colt, and about 250 of the .42 mag 210 gr......I know, I got it bad enough, that I'm making bullets for guns I don't even own....

Lubed the up and letting dry...........

Next will be the .230 gr RN for the .45 lc.......Then the .308's and then .311's......

If any of you guys have a slingshot, Various caliber round ball molds make for great slingshot ammo. I use from .35 up to .50 roundball for my slingshot.

Hunter, I have the old 255gn RN flat point in .454 for the LC. I tried it in the ACP and it cycles the action even down to 500 FPS. If you shoot from the hip you can watch the bullet fly to the target!

LOL, I was watching a guy shooting a .78 cal round ball out of a blunderbuss, and it did the same thing, you could watch it all the way to the target.
