Survivalists & their "Positive" view of TSHTF!

This thread will introduce my new scenario, but 1st a few words about the Survivalists mentality. Maybe Remy can, or already has, shed some light on this mindset but 1st the human mind seems, for the most part, to think nothing bad will ever happen to them, their family, loved ones, etc.. 2nd, it's sorta like the scenario in Stephen King's book: The Stand", where a Pandemic of global proportions, a Biological Warfare Virus, gets loose on an unsuspecting world and wipes out 90% of the earth's population. You only survive if you are already immune to the virus, the nest step is to survive each other. Now the positive spin, The government is gone. No taxes, Buying or selling, none of that; everything's free for the taking. Vehicles, guns, homes, food, medicine, whatever. Technology still exists, but no "infra-structure" of any kind.

So here's your scenario, it's like the "Stephen King" book without the Satanic bad guy. 90% of the world's population is gone, as is it's infra-structure. Oddly enough, The whole Wolf-Pack has survived as well as the internet, electricity(for now), all utilites. However there is no Law enforcement or military to protect you. What are you going to do? What new threats do you see as lurking on the horizon?:eek:

Haven't read the book. This is a virus so I assume it's contagious. With 90% of the world's population gone nothing is going to work but it's your scenario so okay.

I have to become an isolationist. With a contagious and deadly infectious pathogen on the loose, I want to quarantine myself and my family from any possible exposure. That definitely means Bug In.

What new threats? Same as any other scenario but this time you had better know something about the disease. Can it survive outside the host? If so how long? Is man the only host it uses or can it cross species? Little nice to knows like that.

You need to read the book, it's very long and very interesting from a "Survivalists" point of view. T.V. Made it into a "mini-series" with an all-star cast, you can rent it from family video. You are right about nothing being able to work, however I thought there might be a possibility that computers and what-not would have some sort of back-up program so I'm going with that. This would allow us to keep in contact with each other. It's too late to do anything, the disease is air-borne and hit everybody before they were even aware of it's existence. Your family is either dead or alive, up to you. In the book most family members did not survive and new relationships had to be formed. Remember, we all like to think bad things can't happen to us...etc...:cool:

Hello! New to this site. I have become increasingly interested in Hiking and survival measures for future use. Something I am looking into begining practicing now just not sure how and still looking into different methods. My exposure so far has been little except childhood fun in rural Texas. Other exposure is My dads & husbands survival skills learned from the USMC. -Sniper training and later wild California survival. I have only heard how this is done never actually experienced it. Then I have heard about hikers who are completly self contained and have no reliance on the land as far as plants and animals. What are some of the things or ways this is done with people on this site? How does it fit into your life? Is it practiced, lived or visited and on what level, if you will.

As far as the post, I haven't read these books, though my son has, -not my genre. But it is interesting to think of what could happen and how would we react to it? I feel that something will and definately could eventually happen and am drawn to this area for beginning a new practice during this time of my life.

Hello! Hello! Is anyone out there? Hello Wolf-Pack Where you guys at? Are any of you still alive? My wife and son are gone, I had to bury them in the back yard. There was a cop who lived down the street and went nuts with his Riot gun. Blew away his whole family, then four of his neighbors before blowing the top of his skull off with his 44 Magnum! Right now I've piled up everything I own against the doors and windows, keeping my weapons close. there was a lot of activity for awhile but haven't seen or heard anything in the last 48 hours. I've taken model rocket engine igniters and stuck them into tupperware bowls of black powder along with some nuts and bolts. I've buried them in the yard and ran wire from them into the house. I also have done some similar with containers of gasoline out by the street. Buried the whole thing. Anyone that wants to come in had better be by invite.

Ate the last of the dog two days ago and I've seen cat tracks in the frost the last two mornings. I've taken some stereo wire and made some snares. I might eat tomorrow. Hope it's a fat one.

Corpses everywhere. Thank God it's winter. If I don't eat soon I'm gone have to make a run for the border (little plug for Taco Bell:D).

Nell & Rick, glad to see you guys are still around. My radio reports that the highways, roads & streets are all blocked by cars filled with corpses. everybody was heading to the woods, as if that would save them! I've got plenty of food and water stockpiled, but I don't think anybody else is left around here. My last radio station just went off the air without warning. I think they have bit the big one as well. I'm staying until I have a plan, anybody else? Our National Guard unit is gone so there's no way to chopper out!

Well,if the roads are all blocked,then maybe I'll head over to one of the Amish houses around here and see if I can snag a couple of horses,one to pack my stuff,and the other to ride,maybe see what they have stored in their pantry that will travel well..one of the horses will be a draft,should be able to carry quite a bit on that one.

Horse travel is really not a bad idea, you might get around a lot of trouble spots that way!(here's something that may really help a survialist!) Go packing heat, remember, even though the Amish are known to be pacifists strange things can happen to anyone. Any ideas where you might go?

I just had a rough time of it! I met a guy named Dan who was also unaffected like me. We moved most of the bodys out of here using a van. Moved them over into a mass grave out in the corn-field that stretches for miles right in front of my house. He'd dug it with a back-hoe. (That's his line of work. I'd heard the back-hoe, but hadn't paid it much attention) we were both attacked by two other guys who were also unaffected. Dan shot his attacker but the guy managed a fatal knife thrust to Dan before he died. I...I...don't know how to say this...I used my Ka-bar on the other guy...he had a butcher knife and cut my left bicep....I...I nearly took his head off with a wild swing. There was all this blood.....I'll...I'll be alright. I'm going out tomorrow with my guns and use the van to bring all the food I can find back here. I still don't have a clue as to what else I can do. I still see that guy's eyes...don't think I'll be getting much sleep tonight. I used my 1st aid kit and cleansed the wound from the butcher knife. I stitched it up with my sewing kit. Didn't even mind the pain...just kept seeing that guy's eyes....

Well, it looks like the lights are out for good. Power went out last night. I'm feeding the fireplace and running the kerosene heater to stay warm. I've got a back up propane heater and five tanks of propane so I'll be good for a while, I guess. My solar panel is keeping the laptop charged enough to stay online.

Not a soul around here. Lucky I guess compared to what you folks have been through. I've checked the truck radio and my portable walkie talkies for any signs of life and all I get is static.

Didn't catch the da**ed cat so looks like I'll have to start foraging tomorrow. I'll go out at first light and start checking some of the houses for can goods. Wish me luck.

(oops) I know what you're saying about it being either him or me, but that doesn't help much right now. The good news is that Dan worked for the large construction company that was in the process of leveling the ground where a bunch of "pre-fabricated" house were going to be built about a half-a mile up the street. (They really are, right across from the waste-treatment plant...PHEW!) He & I brought in some generators, a gasoline tanker truck, and a Bull-Dozer that he 'd taught me how to run. We'd just got finished hooking up both of our homes to the Generators for auxillary power and the management of this housing complex was building some kind of lodge(true also) about a block behind me so I managed to get some 3/4' plywood, air-compressor, air-hose, and some nail guns with nails. I've turned my house into a freakin' bunker. As soon as I can I'm taking the Cat and knocking down all the other houses around me so no-one can sneak-up on me! Right across the street is a large industrial structure owned by a company that worked with mentally challenged people. Dan had wanted to move in there but I figured it would be too large to defend properly with just two guys. I'll let you know more later as it develops.

Sarge,so far the battery on my lap top is holding out,just pop on every now and then to see whose made it,gotta save the battery as long as I can,if I find a place with power or at least a generator,I will recharge the battery.

If some of you want we can continue this scenario or end it here, that's up to you guys. I just want to point out a few things that's been shown here so far.
A TEOTWAWKI situation is not going to go away if it's wiped out 90% or better of the earth's population. It isn't going to be fun and there's a lot of stuff will come up that most won't expect. Let's look at what's happened so far, both good & bad.

1st, congrats to Nell for finding a way out that allows her to by-pass the clogged/congested roads that certainly would be a fact in such a crisis. The idea of heading over to the homes of her Amish neighbors and look for horses was brilliant!

2nd, Interestingly enough, most of us decided to "hole-up" in our houses rather than "head for the hills...er...woods". So much for the magic "BOB".

3rd, How do you prepare for the psychological reprecussions of losing your family to a dread disease or having to take a human life in a "hand-to-hand" combat situation when you've never had to do it before? As I immersed myself into the role it started to become so real I had to quickly back out. Thinking about a day-to-day life where you have to constantly watch your back makes me grateful to live in civilization.

SUMMARY: While it's true that We could Survive, looking forward to a possible Pandemic like this is just plain nuts! (my opinion):cool: Wild Woman was right in her earlier assessment of this.

I can truly only speak for myself, but I don't believe that anyone here has a "positive attitude" about a SHTF or TEOTWAWKI scenario, as much as they have a "realist" attitude or perspective about it.

When you look at the state of affairs, both U.S. and world, it tends to make you take a look at the potential for a SHTF or TEOTWAWKI situation. While either of these may never happen in our life's time, it doesn't hurt to be prepared.

Hay ..anyone there ..I was out camping and did not know any thing had happened till two guys came in to camp for some food nice guys..I made it home but everyone here is dead and have been for sometime the smell is so bad I am still in the camper. I got solar prow in the camper so that is good I getting a bigger truck for it tomorrow with a winch on to help clear the roads . I cannot stay here the smell is so bad , I am heading for the coast more food and fresh air but it will be hard , it was hard just getting home to see MOM she still in the house I am just going to leave her there not much of her left anyway. Hope you all make it I need to get a water pump that will pump water out of a creek and into my camper but it has to work off 12 volt will need a long cord too so camper world here I come

I move through downtown streets staying close to buildings, watching for movement. Corpses are everywhere, burned out cars piled into each other and into buildings, windows are smashed, some stores have been looted.

I have a pair of snow goggles and a liteweight scarf wrapped around my nose and mouth, it was the quickest safety/breathing apparatus I could come up with. I am certain that the virus has run its course, but I don't want to find out the hard way that I'm not immune. This morning I looted a hunting/outfitting shop. I have a .243 rifle, a 40 cal handgun and a Bowie knife. I have a small backpack loaded with MRE's and a first aid kit. Now I'm looking for someplace where I can find operational communications. I'm moving toward the financial area, banks and brokerages have their own servers and emergency power generators. I see a small group of looters climbing through the broken front window of a retail outlet. I fade back into the shadows and wait, moving only when I'm sure they've moved on. There have been surprisingly few looters...so many dead. the corpses stink around me.

With the butt of the rifle, I break the glass panel of the front door of a banking tower and climb through the opening. I head for the stairs, not trusting the elevators running on emergency power. If I can get online, I can search for my friends. After I make a comm. link, I'll steal a 4x4 truck and load up with jugs of water and food that is sealed. But there's no point in heading out from here until I have somewhere to head. I kick in the door of the first set of offices I come too. A woman's corpse is at a desk with her head down on the keyboard. the computer is gone. I gently push her back on her rolling chair, but her body flops sideways and hits the carpet. I start typing...

after further consideration, i've determined that i'm not in fact dead, it just felt like it for a bit.

i've gathered the batteries from my neighborhood's vehicles, my trim routers, solderin iron and a pack load of gear together with all of my bulk grains and beans. i'm headed via toyota tacoma up the tuolumne to where the water's cleaner. the hills up this way are drivable off-road for a long ways. there's nothing in this valley to keep me here.

Me an' Mr. Bull Dozer been knocking down houses! Now I got me a good field of fire. I had to make some windows in the North & south part of my house so's I can see all around me! Met a former National Guards man name of Chris who's got a military Humvee. If we can figure out where to go I might leave here. He's gonna hook up a trailer to it but I don't know how that'll work on the roads, may have to move with just whatever we can load up in the Humvee itself. Shot at someone today who took a pot shot at me. I caught him square in the eye with a High Velocity .22 cal. LR Hollow Point! Went right into his brain neat as you please. Geez the size of the hole in the back was enough to make me barf, but I think I'm getting a bit used to all this gore. Guy looked like one of those "hard-core" survivalist types who seem to think he was bullet-proof. Doggone you Rick, you scared the crap outta me! Take lots of Vitamin "C" to knock that cold outta your system, unless that Nurse wife of yours has some anti-biotics stashed somewhere. Trax, glad you're up and around. Thought you had "gone under" for sure. war Eagles been messin' with the Stones music again. Probably hitting the Turkey pretty hard too. I'll let you know what we're up to. I'm at an abandoned motel east of Winnipeg. Ripped off a laptop on my way out of the city and this place has Internet hook up. Have a Chev v-6 4X4, filled the tank and 4 5-gallon jerry cans. I've loaded all the sealed groceries I could grab and have 10 5 gallon jugs of water. Had to stop because I was interrupted by other looters.

Some guy with a 12 gauge walked around the truck and said "thanks for loading it up for us" I put a 40 cal round in his crotch and moved fast before his buddies could react. There's a few pellets in the tailgate. Gonna keep moving east toward WE, thinking we can hook up, or else head toward Wisconsin for Nell if she's having trouble getting here. Like the isolation of WE's place if we can get there? Anyone else? Logging off and moving again.

across town and knock out the front doors of the Farm king store to stock up on guns, knives, ammo & the like but Chris said he'd already been out that way and some others had been there 1st! His idea was better; we raided the National Guard Armory, which was easy as he had the combo to the weapons vault. I've got two Colt 1911 .45's with boxes of Ammo, A bunch of AR 15's in case we hook up with any friendlies and they need a weapon, all kinds of ammo for those, and a SAW with 2000 rds...OOOHRAH! Also we picked up a 2nd Humvee and several 5 Gal. Jerry cans of Diesel Fuel...these things don't seem to run on Ethyl. Also got ten cases of MRE's and some explosives. Chris knows the whereabouts of just about every National Guard Unit between here and Winnepeg! Says he don't know the combo's to those vaults and we may have to blow them open! My GPS is goofy. On again, off again. My guess is the command centers are abandoned and it's only a matter of time before we lose GPS, too. Lot of stores have been looted. I saw one guy that had died trying to cart off a plasma screen. Crazy. Last moment on the planet spent looting. Just stupid. I found a house with an indoor swimming pool and I've loaded a bunch of water containers in the truck.

I drained a couple of vehicle gas tanks and got the generator going. The furnace is finally working again. I'm just perched in my upstairs window keeping an eye on things. It's so quiet around here it's eerie.

Sorry I am late! I was hung up at work with some virus that was making a lot of people sick, I got off duty and went home. Woke-up about 15 hours later and checked the forum...wow did I miss something. The lady is probably about 15 miles away, and I am having trouble communicating to her...phones must be down.

I hope she remembers that we have a present meeting point and a known path to get there. If she isn't at the meeting point, I know her route to get there and I can begin to backtrack. Or do I wait here, thinking she'll come home. Is she even OK?

Been on the road for about 7 hours now,got my phone and laptop charged back up grabbed a hot bath and washed my clothes before sleeping for a couple of hours,woke up because someone was trying to get into the garage,he was after the 4x4,he left when I shot at him,I knicked his shoulder,he was none too happy,and looked like he had a knife on him,I was pretty worried when I loaded up in the truck to head out,hoping he was really gone,didn't see him again.

i made it to upper don pedro reservoir above moccasin.

at a nearby hardware store there was little left. i copped the rectifier from an ark welder, some tinsnips, a pop riveter, and some misc. essentials.

i'm setup near a small bride over the tuolumne above the first rise from the resevoir where the fishing is good and the current has some strength behind it. i'm working on two water wheeles to connect to my router motors.

there aren't many people around. i can see the smoke of fires in the distance but don't need to venture near yet.

Wow! Glad to see so many people made it. I know I'm new to the group, but glad you all are doing OK. Have seen some individuals roaming through, scavanging. Didn't make contact with any. Made it to one of the Navy bases nearby (there's 3). No personnel, no ships. Very little equipment that could be moved. I did find a few yard craft, some inflatables, and one tug boat. Working on figuring how to get it moving. Shouldn't be too hard. It has full fuel tanks (about 85,000 gal of diesel). No food or weapons, but I'm pretty good there. Weather's been great. I know some of you were headed north. Let me know if you're coming this way.

Barely made it out of the damn Bass Pro Shop alive, some infected crazies in there had a woman cornered in an isle, shot two and used my hatchet on one, split him like a melon. Got a few more rounds for my .40 cal S&W and picked up a .22 rifle and three boxes of shells for it, tossed it in the back, grabed some rappeling rope from a shelf and for some reason a lantern but no fuel for it. The woman ended up being a nut, she was straight ziggidy boo and had something wrong with her blisters all over her and drooling like sick dog, shot her and got out when I heard a comotion further away, shots and screaming. Been on the road for a while and haven't seen anyone since, when I hit the horse ranch a litle further up the way gonna check the horses and see if I can't pack a couple and ride one cross country. Be back up in a bit.

Well, finally some good news. Two families were making their way through the area this morning. Unarmed, no food or water. Three kids between them. Not a very happy lot. I walked around the corner of a building and danged near walked into 'em. They were as surprised as I was. Shocked might be a better word. Lucky they weren't a bunch out looking for trouble. I gave them some food and water and they are shacked up at my place for now. Kids ate like they had never had food.

I've been pretty lucky so far. None of the problems you folks have run into. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

We're going to make another trip to town tomorrow and see if we can scrounge up a couple of more generators and some more fuel. It would be nice if they could move into a couple of the houses around here and we can try to get our lives back to "normal".

Computer's still loading extremley slow, but that's okay for now. Okay, here's my update: Chris found another National Guard dude name of Jerome. Jerome is a top-notch mechanic and he's got some kind of big mother-lovin' "all-terrain" cargo truck; (our tax-dollars at work:rolleyes:) we've loaded up all or extra supplies into the truck which I'm gonna drive. The two grunts will drive the Humvees and are we ever loaded for Bear, Grizzley at that! We had a bit of a start yesterday as we were heading out across the large field in front of my house, going west, when a bunch of nut-case, red-necked Survivalists came out of the woods in their pick-up trucks and shouted at us to give everything to them or they were going to open up on us with their Ruger Mini 14's, shotguns, .22's, a slingshot, and what not. Chris stopped, dived out of his seat, came up through the hatch and cocked that big M-60 .50 cal. machine gun. Then he yelled back: "Hey mother-*******, You wanna take those pop-guns back to K-mart?" Then he opened up on them. Man! He lit those trucks up like the 4th of July! Jerome tossed a couple of Frag. grenades and I opened up with the saw. I got one of them in the head, but only because I started firing low and wasn't used to the weapon. It's recoil caused it to rise and a fluke shot caught one of them square in the head; he dropped like a limp doll. Chris took out four of them in one truck, two inside the cab and two in back, not to mention scrapping that really nice looking F-350; probably just took it off the lot at the Ford dealership. Jerome's grenades wounded two of them as we saw the rest of them picking them up and helping them into the woods. We'll be watching our "6" for awhile, but I think we'll head for California for now and look up SMOK, & any other CA. wolves. More later.

step 1) food/water/shelter, you know, basics. This should be easy as you will have more than a couple year's worth of supplies you can scavenge from the supermarket (canned, no perishable) and your home with act as a decent enough shelter for the rest of your life. Water will need to be purified as noone is at the wastewater plant cleaning your pond scrapings.
step 2) Enjoy the freedom. Light a bag of poop on your neighbor's doorstep, steal wings from the Hooters downtown, piss on a police cruiser, set up your rec room in the grandest, most ostentatious courtroom in town.
step 3) ... profit?

Honestly unless I'm playing in a mineshaft and come up to see the world has reverted back 2000 years, anyone could survive the rest of their days comfortably with the remains of human civilization. Now, change the scenario to 3 generations from teotw and that'll be a fun discussion.

i read the stard and watched the 4 stand movies lol. i go to my friend tylers house (if hes alredy dead) take his .50BMG , .308 British , a few of his M-15's maby his M-60 or M-4, a few dozen of his .22's , maby 10 or 20 of his pistols, his rocket launcher (he seriousily has a real working one) all his C4 , nitroglycerine , RDX , and nerve gas , a few of his claymores, his grenades , his flamethrower, his night vision goggles (mine suck) his better knives , maby some of his extreme weather cloths , his survival rations , his 4x4 , his armored travel trailer (pulled by the the 4x4) then i go to canadian tire take a generator and some solar panels/inverters, and i rig up a satelite on the trailer so i can get internet from where ever (even if the networks are down you can access the satellites directially if you reprogram your internet protocols) and i pick up some seed (incase i wana start a farm later)

i read the stard and watched the 4 stand movies lol. i go to my friend tylers house (if hes alredy dead) take his .50BMG , .308 British , a few of his M-15's maby his M-60 or M-4, a few dozen of his .22's , maby 10 or 20 of his pistols, his rocket launcher (he seriousily has a real working one) all his C4 , nitroglycerine , RDX , and nerve gas , a few of his claymores, his grenades , his flamethrower, his night vision goggles (mine suck) his better knives , maby some of his extreme weather cloths , his survival rations , his 4x4 , his armored travel trailer (pulled by the the 4x4) then i go to canadian tire take a generator and some solar panels/inverters, and i rig up a satelite on the trailer so i can get internet from where ever (even if the networks are down you can access the satellites directially if you reprogram your internet protocols) and i pick up some seed (incase i wana start a farm later)
