.22 lr rifle ammo

I want to stock up on .22lr ammo, what brand so ya'll tend to grab when your in the mood? Do you just grab whats cheap or on sale or do ya'll tend to look for something in particular?

When I was stocking up on 22lr ammunition I bought the 550 bulk packs from Wal Mart. Depending what was on the shelf at the time it was either Federal or Remmington. I have not had a problem with either.

I mix it up, I buy both high end like Stinger and some Hyper Velocities, then buy medium vel and then finnally the lower cost. On the lower cost I caught Rem-Peters at my local Gander Mountain in the lil antiqued brown box for $1.39 a box and bought 10 500 round bricks. I also bought some rem sub sonics, CCI CB in long and short. Those rem-peters are very clean, they work and they are not gobbed up with sticky wax.

I also found a really nice stash at an old gun shop here, the guy is retiring and he had about 3000 of the older brass crimped shot shells, so I bought those and some other nice lil treasures of ammo from him.

I buy small amounts of different brands and try them in my firearms. When I find a brand that performs in a particular gun better than the others I stock up on that brand. what I have found is cci mini mags shoot the best in most of my rifles.

^Exactly what Randyt said. My .22 only eats CCI. Mis-fires on Remington all the time. Really hates Federal. For some reason it doesn't eject that properly.

I bought a box of the bulk Winchester XPert from Walmart and they tended to jamb my Ruger MKIII every 20 rounds or so. The reason? The bullet was loose in the casing on a lot of them. I think it may be because of them being packed loose in the box.
I have tried cci stingers, mini mags and Winchester SuperX superspeed HP in 100 rnd boxes and they all fire cleanly and (thus) dependably.

If you can get in on a group buy at the local range, that's a good way to save cash.

I had tested my selected guns for a bug out already. The rem-peters really do well for me in a Ruger 22/45 Mk-II 4" and a customized AR-7. The CCI Mini Mags are very expensive for what they are and if the bulk works, why go to the expenses of buying the Mini-Mags. I have some in the storage, but not a lot of them.

In my escalation kit at the cabin, I have some mini mags, but mostly the rem-peters. The escalation kit has a Savage 23a and the same Ruger. They both work really well with the rem-peters. They also do well with other trash rounds like federal, aguilla, Ammex etc.....

I also feel that IF you do not have ammo for what ever reasons.... your gun being able to handle what you can get your hands on by trade, theft, looting etc....your guns should be able to handle junk ammo well. This may take smithing on your guns, but it is well worth if you are depending on that gun(s)...simple things like polishing feed ramps of chambers, change out of springs to more reliable ones, polishing feed ramps of magazines etc.....

Buying ammo in bulk and buying bulk ammo are two very different activities!

Over the years I have tested many types of .22lr in a variety of guns. As the old advice of the sages goes, "Get what your gun shoots best." the old thing about being able to "shoot anything". You may get it to go pop but you probably will not hit consistantly. Most of my guns require a complete reset of the sights or scope when changing ammo brands. If you have ten different rounds of 5 grain weights from three manufacturers in your magazine you are shooting to 10 very different spots.

All ammo is not equil. The bulk stuff from Wallmart, or anywhere else, is only marginally better than throwing firecrackers at a target. My 10/22 will not shoot the milk box stuff into less than 6" @ 25 yards and that is not good enough to keep anyone fed. The problem will be that you have 4 rounds in a 2"circle and a flyer 6" off somewhere.

I have found that folks who claim to get fantastic groups from this crap ammo are only counting the ones in the black, claiming fliers don't count.

Guess what! Fliers count! They count as an empty soup pot! The last thing you can afford in a survival situation is a near miss.

In contrast, When I buy good quality ammo even my cheap guns improve their preformance. By good quality I am not talking the $1.25 per box instead of the $1 per box. I am refering to Minimags as the bottom line and various other mid-quality ammo from Midus, Lupia, RWS, SK and Eley as the next step up. Those ammos cost $2-4 per box and a full pot is worth every penny.

My 10/22 will group the SK Pistol Match ammo inside a 1/2" circle @ 50 yards with every shot, no fliers and no missed food. It also means that @ 50 yards, in a self defense situation, against a target wearing body armor, sappy plates and a kelvar helmet, I can choose to take out either the right or left eye, depending on what is available.

And those that are always promoting "shot placement" as the great .22lr equilizer, you better have ammo you can place on target, where you want it with every shot!

I buy a box of minimags every time I go into Wallmart and order SK Match from Champions choice every few months just to keep the supply at a good level. I also keep a brick of Aquilla subsonic for one of my single shots that has special talents and groups them very well. Minimags seem to work moderately well in every gun I own and I am confident that if it will make my AR7 work it will make any 22 ever made work at a reasonable level.

Trading, scrounging, looting?????
During the last ammo shortage there was none to scrounge. I can not imagine a real shortage pattern of availability,(Is that not why we stockpile?)
During a crisis there will be none to trade. Would you give someone you did not know ammo in trade for anything?

Keep in mind that two bricks of .22 (1100 rounds) will feed a family for 2-3 years, if you are hitting the target. Combine that with other ammo and hunting capabilities and resupply of a two brick horde should not be a real concern for half a decade.

I don't currently own a .22 weapon. But I do stockup on .22 whenever I see a good price. This will be mostly for barter, so I am not finicky right now. When I do [urchase one, of course will be a bit more particular

Can't say I have a problem with most .22 ammo, but then again, I tend to favor Remington, CCI, and Win Super X.
I did have a slight problem with the new Marlin, Model 60 Duck Unlimited Edition .22 that I won in a raffle.

Seems to jamb an empty in the bolt after 13 rounds or so, but haven't really shot enough to really try out what it likes.

Mostly shoot the Ruger 10/22 and have used all different ammo, and not had a problem.

I have boxes and bricks "deployed" around, in different locations.

I do believe you get what you pay for, and tend to "want my shot to count", so stick to the CCI and such for those occasions.

If we are just shooting cans, I use all the other stuff...........Unless there is money on it.

Me and a bunch of my shooting friends have had great luck with Remington Golden Bullets. (Not the thunderbolt stuff.) You can get them in bulk packs of 550 for $16 to $18 at walmart or Bass pro shops, etc. For me and a few of my friends, they group and have the same POI as the CCI mini-mags. (Mostly in 10-22's)
A friend that I shoot with has a Sig mosquito, that is picky about ammo, and it does fine with the Golden Bullet Rems.
As far as the federal and/or the winchester bulk packs from walmart, I don't really like one and really don't like the other, but I don't remember which one it was, that really sucked. I don't buy either any more.

Some of my .22s will shoot a particular brand/type of ammo better than other brands/types but, I've never owned a gun that simply wouldn't feed/function with whatever ammo I stuffed in it in the way you describe. I don't think I would keep a gun that was that finicky. I might be willing to accept it if we were talking about a target rifle dedicated to absolute precision and used only in competition where I would be able to control almost all variables. However for a field/survival gun, that's just unacceptable.

Knowing what the gun likes best is good. Stocking up on whatever ammo that happens to be is also good. But the gun still needs to function with and shoot with reasonable (functional) accuracy whatever happens to be available.

IMO, that's the ticket. Just because a bullet has a high price tag doesn't make it good, and just because it's inexpensive doesn't make it bad. I like CCI, but it's too expensive for my purposes. The bulk Federal is a-ok, I've yet to have a misfire and it's fairly clean shooting and accurate. I stocked up on it many years ago and it still shoots great.

If your rifle or pistol is not semi auto the choice of ammo is less of a concern, but many semi's are finicky. I just make sure whatever I get it's coated and not bare lead. Any bare lead bullets give me grief, lots of extra cleaning and the action seems to get fouled up much quicker. Is there such a thing as dirty powder? If so, these have it. I only use the bare bullets in my bolt and that's only because I hate to throw them out having spent money on them.

I used to only buy the 50 packs of Remington High velocity? I think they were called, but they changed something and I started getting lots of duds, misfires, and dangerous stuff. I even had a few with mishapen bullets. I wrote Remington and they asked me to send the bullets to them through the US mail. I quit doing business with them after that.

I prefer CCI Mini Mags but you sure can't beat the performance to price ratio of Winchester Dynapoints. Pretty darn cheap and accurate in just about everything I've seen.

I use the standard Remington express or Winchester super X in a solid point...
And then, purchase several boxes at a time as I've found the negative issues
of mass production are sometimes a factor...Everytime I open a box, I'll sellect
several rounds at random thru-out the box...If I can't stack'em with my Ruger
77 I'll set the whole box to the side for plinking, and try another until I'm a bit
more confident with my groups...and then, with those I hunt squirrel...Soup't-
up super-bullets just don't group well for me......................................BH51.
