Ok, everybody says Rice is a good "survival" food ,, I HATE rice ! well plain white rice anyway,, (i love chicken fried rice) But,, I find it hard to believe that Rice by itself can have much if any nutritional value ,, I would think a jar of peanut butter in your preps would go much farther and be way more beneficial,,, what say you ?

JC I'm the same way about plain rice...... However if you toss in some spices it's not bad. Maybe some beef or chicken boullion cubes, some powdered or regular butter. Used some cajun spices cook up with some red beans.... It's easy enough to make several ways. Like welderguy said plenty of vitamins and protien in it. I wouldn't want to have it as my main food source everyday, but in an emergency I'll take it over several other food items.

Rice is a good food. Folks around the world have been eating it forever. However, if like you, you don't like it, then it is a no go. No sense stocking something you won't use. I have found that it can be flavored in many ways. I guess it is what you get used to. But I do keep a stock of dehydrated potatoes to give some variety.

I guess one advantage is that it keeps well and a pound of dry rice will cook fast and go a long way,, I agree,, bring the seasoning along ;) But I really didnt think it could have much nutrition,, its so bland,, I got schooled ! Thanks :)

I hated rice growing up. The last few years I have had to change my diet for health reasons. Rice was a food I could eat all I wanted. I didn’t like eating it at first but I forced myself to eat it every day. That and beans, I really didn’t care that much for beans but it was also an all I could eat food. After I got use to making them my main course I realized my body felt better and it would stick with me better throughout the day. I could eat a bowl of rice for breakfast and not be as hungry at lunchtime compared to if I would have eaten sausage, eggs and potatoes. I would much rather have sausage, pork and marbled beef but I have even switched to just game meat. Don’t like it as well but feel better!

Stock legumes instead; beans, lentils, etc. Keeps well and for a long time, it's nutritious, filling and an excellent source of protein.

I'm probably the wrong person to ask, being a cajun sushi chef (oxymoron?). I was weaned on red beans and rice - the perfect food! That said, eat what you like.

However indulge me to briefly extol its virtues. Rice is very easy to store and its inexpensive. If it gets bugs in it simply wash it well and the bugs will float and be rinsed out - like paning for gold! It is the staple for most of the worlds population. Who could argue with that? There are so many rice dishes that I enjoy - sushi, gumbo, jambalaya, dirty rice, paella, asian fried rice, rice cakes, rice pudding, simple rice and brown gravy, etc. It makes a great base for a poultry or seafood stuffing, or boil it, form it into cakes and roast it for an entirely different taste, texture and experience. Almost every culture relys on rice, so if you're in the mood for: Hispanic, Indian, Asian, European, Island, Cajun, or plain ol' American, sweet or savory, you'll have the base of more dishes than any other food. Consider rice a blank canvas upon which to paint your meal and you'll begin to appreciate its versatility. Flavor it however you like, with whatever available resources you have, and voila, a tasty meal.

They view it as a revigious obligation as they consider rice a sacred food - the soul of Japan. They even have a saying, "A man can be forgiven for squandering money, but never for wasting rice."

Sort of. I keep a couple of pounds sealed in jars (plastic) in the emergency gear in both vehicles.

I was raised on oats and rice. Rice was a treat and a change from oats, which I got nearly every morning. Add a little sugar to rice and enough water to make a bit of a soup and you have one tasty treat and a meal all my itself. Toss on a little butter if you like.

Real rice is awesome. Try different types. Basmati, Jasmine, Arborio.

Butternut Squash Risotto (made with arborio rice) is so good it should be illegal. And that squash sure takes care of any vitamin deficiency.

I'm sad... this week I cooked my last butternut squash from the fall harvest. No more risotto now unless I buy one at the store...

That is the recipe I use by the way. Very few ingredients, but they're important. And yes, you have to use arborio rice.

Use a really deep pot because when this stuff splatters, it is like napalm, and be ready to stand around stirring for 30-45 minutes with a wooden spatula or spoon (plastic or metal might get too hot).

Very labor intensive to cook (stir stir stir stir stir) but... just addictively good.

Oh, the one thing I do differently is I roast my squash instead of steam it. 425 for 1 hour. You can do this a day ahead or whenever and just then store the squash until you're ready to cook the rice.

I think roasting brings out more flavor.

I'm not keen on white rice either. I like it now and again, as an accompaniment to curry or chilli. However, I do like Arborio rice(risotto rice) and over here we make a dessert with a short grain rice, which I love. I keep a lot of beans etc and dried potato, oats and flour instead. If you have flour and a couple of eggs(hence the girls)= pasta and many other things!

Oh and Chris is right, Squash Risotto should be on the banned list! It's one of my favourite foods.

Rice that clumps together is called sticky rice.

I like rice, Plain rice with hot sauce, red beans and rice, fried rice (chicken, pork Veggie) I will even mix a can of of chile with rice. You can add a can of your favorite soup over rice. ETC. Rice is one of my long term surivial foods.

Best thing abut rice is it's unlimited shelf life. One can of any soup with rice makes a meal for a few folks. Rice plus what you scrounge and you eat till the rice is gone.

Here, I have protein out the gazoo but very little starch that I can forage. So, for me, rice is the way to go.

When I was stationed in Hawaii, my roomate was from the area. We had rice with most meals, and a rice cooker was a must. I think that in that area/culture rice cookers were about as common as coffee makers.

Winter is right on both counts: White rice can store forever, while brown rice will absolutely go rancid over time. I consider white rice a staple, (along with rolled oats, corn grits and pancake mix) all can be mixed with anything: think not only bullion, spices, salt and pepper, to any soup or sauce or dried fruit or vegetable, any canned good practically anything: peanut butter, sardines, etc. Plus it is dirt cheap a 50lb bag costs $15. I have plenty stored,
