Yesterday fuel was 2.97 to 3.05 a gallon for regular. Today its 3.19 to 3.32 a gallon for my area that is not normal it usually goes up 2 to 7 cents a gallon in a 24 hour period. Did crude just spike off the charts or what

Unfortunately yes. The turmoil in the Middle East is driving the price of crude oil up. Libya is one of the largest oil producing nations and it has a large effect on the price of crude oil, as most of the production is "light sweet" crude. The violence in that country has resulted in the loss of 1/2 of the country's output, causing a $6/barrel increase in crude oil prices.

Once Goongooffey ordered the pipelines blown up traders went nuts. Oil touched at $100 for a short bit. What amazes me (although it shouldn't) is when crude hits a price the pumps immediately reflect it. Even though the crude is still in the ground and won't be at the pump for weeks they still reflect it.

Prices go up at the pump immediately when something like this happens, but the prices take a long time to go back down.

You can thank our fellow citizens for these spikes.Much of the price hikes are as a result of commodity traders scrambling to make a quick buck. So far none of the countries in turmoil, Tunisia, Egypt or Libyria are significant oil contributors to the USA, so reality would dictate that they would not in and of themselves contribute higher prices.

I have to disagree with that. It is true that Libya does not directly supply the US with oil, but they do supply the EU and several other places. Any time the supply of a commodity drops, the price rises. Libya lowers production, that creates more of a demand for oil from countries like Saudi Arabia, that do supply the US, driving up the prices that we have to pay.

I do agree that the problem is caused in a large part by commodity traders, but supply and demand plays a part as well.

Keep in mind that the price you pay at the pump today is so that the storage tanks can be filled a week or month from now. While the gas that is being pumped today cost less than is being charged, if the prices were not raised then the tanks could not be filled down the road. That's part of how it works, but yeah - still sucks.

It's the same with shingles. Even if wholesale price at the warehouse has risen, yet the supplier I buy from has 100sqs on hand, if they don't charge a higher price for what they have on hand, they won't be able to afford to get more shingles when stock runs out. Makes perfect sense to me.

Supply and demand certainly plays a large role. That's what drives the traders. Oil is a global commodity today. If we don't buy available supply then China will.

I am going to complain because some yahoo speculator thinks the wind is going to possibly blow from the north south corner of the world today and oil prices must go up immediately. It's BS!!! Producing gas today costs no more than it did yesterday or last month. I am tired of getting gouged everytime I turn around, $1.00 here $5.00 there all because of "a rise in oil prices" has forced us to raise our prices. And, when oil drops back down, "we won't drop our prices because, well, we won't." All I can say is "Drill baby Drill..." I don't put up with stuff, but then again they've got you over a barrell. Yes, I'm ticked however I have seen too many times, "Oh!, you are going to speak out against me, you own guns, you are a domestic terrorist. No FLY for you! and hand over your guns" Seems to be the only thing one can do is write letters and vote. FART mobiles rock! Theres always talk about truckers over here shutting down the freeways in protest of rising fuel, but the majority of people in this country are too self absorbed to support such a thing. Besides, the trucking companies pass the increase plus XX% on top of that to cover the rising fuel prices. As such, sheeple just continue to go oooookkkkk, baaaah,baaah.

I voted for change oer here too, RWC, and I knew it would hurt quite a bit and I planned for it accordingly. That I can live with, we all knew fuel duty would go up. But when the behaviour of speculators also puts the price up because of instability in the oil producing regions, it's galling. And before anyone says it, I know that's what speculators do, still doesn't make it right though.

Just so everyone is on the same page. The tax in Britain is 58.95 pence. Let's call is 59 shall we? 59 pence = 95 cents. But wait! That 59 pence is per liter. One liter = .26 gallons. So the tax in Britain = $3.80 a gallon for just the tax! (236 pence per gallon, Winnie vs. our 31 pence per gallon give or take depending on state.)

This is the reason I haven't sold our horses. Horse prices dropped so low that it just isn't feasible to breed them. Yet a couple of years ago when gas prices skyrocketed people around here were threatening to ride their horses to work, town, etc.... Worse comes to worse I'll still have SOME kind of transportation. So in actuality gas prices don't concern me as much for our personal transportation purposes, as much as it does for the Goods we need/use. If Gas prices skyrocket, so will prices on everything else too. EVERYTHING is shipped with gas as a concern on cost. Raw materials and finished products as well. It takes fuel to till the land so we can have vegetables. It takes fuel to cut and bale hay to feed cattle. No, I am less concerned with fuel for transportation than I am with the cost of fuel being reflected in everything else.

If this is directed to me, I'm not looking for any sympathy...Just putting in my .02 that I think the speculators for fuel prices are rediculous and we as Americans are being stripped of our constitutional rights. Along with the fact that the people on "the hill" don't really listen to us. They have their own agendas and make a career out of politics. What happened to becoming a politician for a couple of years, 6 at the most, and then returning to work? Back to the subject matter at hand, I am aware that revenues need to be generated to continue funding road maintenance, free healthcare for illegals, and to pay for other necessary state entities. My wife and I bought a Prius, 49.7 mpg last tank. :) We drive 104 miles a day to work, we car pool together 4 out of 5 days. My other vehicle is a Dodge diesel 3500 dually that gets 22 mpg on winter fuel blend. Can't complain about that! Don't own a bicycle, and my rockcrawler is a toy/ get deeper into the hill BOV. The closest town, only has a convenient store/gas station and is 25 miles away, 12 miles hoofing it through the desert as the crow flies. Needless to say I won't be walking there when the time comes. I will be walking the other way to to harvest a mule deer or elk and will be carrying more than thirty pounds on my back of fresh kill. I love living where I live! Oh ya, as Poco pointed out, we have horses too. Well, wild mustangs. As long as BLM doesn't round them all up, because they know what's best for the horses, we will have those available as well. Take some time to break one, but if the fit hits the shan than it's always an option.

We had a grocery store here that did that as well but people were taking other peoples receipts, punching their shopping card number in at the pump and using their discounts. In other words keep your receipts close at hand! We have a gas station that if you put in a players card from a casino it gives you five cents off a gallon.
Poco I agree with you it takes fuel to do everything, and in the end we are going to be paying for it.
The whole point of my posts were not to belly ache but hopefully come up with some kind of consensus on what can be done to stop the gouging and lack of representation. Hmm...taxation without representation, my how history repeats itself.

rckcrwler - I write my Senators and Representative often. Probably enough that they know me by name. Or at least the office staff does. I try to be polite when I write and I either ask them to vote in a particular manner on an amendment or identify a problem and offer one or more solutions. So, in short, I don't just ***** at them but try to provide some intelligent input.

Some of the responses are canned to be sure but some are clearly addressed specifically at me because my subject was something that a canned response couldn't handle. My point to this is we have to take it upon ourselves to make certain our elected officials are representing us. We have to hold them to task when they fail, too. I'm pleased that all three of mine use a goodly portion of common sense and have voted in a responsible manner on most bills. I wish everyone were so lucky but maybe it's because that in Indiana folks are involved. (shrug).

One has to state their objective, be professional as well as some type of solution. Cussing at them or using foul language only gets your letter thrown out. I've even lucked out and got a few phone calls answered. Congrats on getting more than a "form" letter in return. I generally get the form letter. Anyways, all we can do is keep writing and voting them out of office when they no longer work for us.
