Esther Inglis-Arkell — Awesome discovery of the week: Glass melts when it gets too coldAnyone who's seen enough old Sesame Street episodes or been to enough Renaissance Fairs knows that when glass gets hot enough, it turns to liquid. Applied heat pumps energy into the solid pieces of glass, getting their molecules jiggling. As the heat dissipates, the glass becomes cool and solidifies again.

Most of the time, not many interesting things happen once a substance gets below the temperature required for solification. Its atoms are bound to one another, and without the indroduction of some kind of energy, they'll stay that way. Glass, it turns out, is the exception. Once it gets close to absolute zero, it melts again.

But what could make that happen? The atoms in glass chilled to near-absolute zero have almost no energy, so they can't be jiggling fast enough to tear apart from each other. And yet, on paper and in computer simulations, glass returned to a liquid form when brought close enough to absolute zero.

The wild card turned out to be quantum mechanics. Once the atoms of glass became still enough, they stopped acting like particles and instead acted like waves. The wave-like atoms now were able to flow, moving through spaces too small for particles to get through. This motion, and this ability to fit through small spaces, causes ultra-cold glass to melt into a liquid. No word yet if this works on the T-1000.

I'm gonna set a glass out on the step tonight and see what happens, supposed to be around -5F. If it don't happen by the time it gets that cold, it really don't affect me.

Well, I guess I have known that glass works funny some times.

I can recall a real old plate glass window in a barber shop that I had broken, (another story), and it was pointed out to me that the glass was thicker at the bottom than at the top, seems it sagged (flowed) over 40-50 years.

This was confirmed by my boss at the time, with a micrometer.

I'm sure a lot of things react different at extreme conditions.

Perhaps it flowed slightly as the original piece cooled, but not once it solidified. Manufacturing process were far from efficient and standardized even 100 years ago.

I'm not sure how hot you would have to get glass to be able to pour into a mold, but it won't be coming out easily regardless. To work glass, its basically like working clay. Variations are part of the art of making glass.

oh, i know, I was just correctiong a commonly held misconception. As for the article, since some theories state that energy can become mass, then the removal of all energy would possibly affect the matter as a whole. Even in this case, the article states that the individual particles become something else, allowing them to move through space the original particles would not be able to navigate. Though at that state, you could hardly call it glass anymore due to molecular decomposition.

I've seen many old windows where the glass has sagged over time - looking like you hit it with a torch - rippled and all. Though I have never seen an old window with the glass thicker at the top, I have seen plenty with it thicker at the bottom. Of course this has been in Louisiana - and it does get pretty hot down here in the summer. ;)

I think it may have more to do with the chemocal composition of antique glass rather than manufacturing inconsistencies. From Wikipedia, "Addition of lead(II) oxide lowers melting point, lowers viscosity of the melt, and increases refractive index. Lead oxide also facilitates solubility of other metal oxides and therefore is used in colored glasses. The viscosity decrease of lead glass melt is very significant (roughly 100 times in comparison with soda glasses); this allows easier removal of bubbles and working at lower temperatures, hence its frequent use as an additive in vitreous enamels and glass solders." This lower viscosity of leaded glass (which was used back then due to its lower melting point and ease of bubble removal) may explain the observed phenomenon.

Glass is a liquid, albeit a very slow moving liquid, it is not a solid. At least that is what I have always heard.

Well, I learned the hard way too a while back. The one article said it best: If glass that was 100 years old settled like people say, then glass objects from thousands of years ago would be puddles.

As for the original article though, I'm always wary of scientific theories. They base one theory on an assumption that other theories are legitimate. Sometimes I swear, these scientist are on meth with the stuff they come up with.

Though there is some controversy, the overwhelmong evidence suggests that even glass with a very low melting point and viscosity would not sag significantly over a relatively short period of time of only 100 yrs even at elevated temperatures. Certain types of glass does however bend and deform at near room temperatures (well below its melting point) due to its elsatoplastic qualities, something any glass shop can tell you. It seems that the sagging observed in old windows can indeed be attributed to the manufacturing process. "Other examples of rippling in windows of old homes can be accounted for because the glass was imperfectly flattened by rolling before the float glass process came into use." This explanation seems generally accepted in the available literature (but then again, so does global warming.) ;)

I'll provisionally accept this explanation for now, just as we accept Newtonian physics, knowing that while not a perfect explanation of our world, it is very useful model indeed.
