Ahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. An Indianapolis man has been electrocuted trying to steal copper wiring from a rooftop transformer bank near the city's downtown.

It turns out that itty bitty wire he grabbed ahold of had 24,000 volts snaking through it.

We were changing a condensing unit out on a new blood plasma freezer, -60 below c, on a roof of a building in a bad neighborhood in Milwaukee, WI.
We disconnected the old one, and by the next day all of the copper coils, lines, and wiring were gone!
All that was left was the base and a 150 lb compressor.

I don't know how anyone could get up there, we had an indoor scuttle hole that required a ladder, behind the the building and both sides were straight down about 30 ft, as it was on a bluff over looking a valley. There was a power pole about 6ft away, so maybe they shinned up and jumped?

When we placed the new unit were had to be sure that every thing was welded in and charged, so that new one didn't disappear.

If some one had expressed an interest in hauling off the old unit, we would have helped and payed them, so we didn't have to do it?
I guess stuff isn't worth anything unless you steal it?

You know all well the family will win a multi million dollar lawsuit because of poor electrical magament, a bare wire should not have been there......this kills me, but will be what happens.

True Story: I was in downtown Cleveland a few years ago and was minding my own business, waiting for a city bus at night. All of a sudden I was mugged by 3 black men (turned out to be HS Teens). At the time I did not have a CCW and only had me as a weapon. Two kids had knives and the other either a pipe or a broom stick painted black. I WARNED the three ... three times that they will not like what is about to happen. They told me to shut up and to give them my wallet and valuables. I disarmed the two that had knives and they were on the ground, stunned. The third with the pipe/stick, rose his hand and was about to pummel me when I popped him one in the solar plex and jammed his nose bridge into his head. All three were down.... by this time someone called the cops. The kid with the jammed nose bridge I guess was in really bad condition, the other two just mentally hurt. The cops understood what happened and charged the three with attempted robbery and assualt with a deadly weapon. I was charged with nothing. All three kids are in county lock up as we speak, 2 convicted and the third in liimbo due to his injuries and in the medical pod of county lockup. The kid with the nose bridge broke and jammed had some brain damage and other issues. His fam sued me because I used excessive force against their son. The jury and judge both stated I did not use excessive force and they lost their case. So, they sued me again for using force UNKNOWN to the three kids (MY FREAKIN HANDS) because I was trained to use them via the US military and therefore were concealed weapons. Again, criminally was NOT charged....BUT this time the jury ruled against me for a very large sum of money. HOWEVER... the judge set the verdict aside and ruled against the jury and the case was adjuducated as self defense and was justufied and I was NOT to pay damages. In the end, I did have a jury state I was responsible and was to pay, a decent judge saved my butt. ..........I now on a continuing bases am harassed by that fam, they never get close enough to let me get ahold of them, they do it all from a distance and by phone, computer etc...... in the meantime their son lays in a jail medical ward with an IV in his thigh in a in & out catatonic state.

Just as I do not have any sympathy or empathy for the guy stealing the copper, neither do I for the kids that tried to rob me. They got what they deserved, but I was rung through the ringer for protecting myself.

Yes, the burgler got what he deserved, but look for US (you and me) to pay the family for the loss of a scum bag. Poor criminal folk, their extended family and scum bags feel justified in gaining money when they are hurt or killed in a crime they are commiting. It is a mentality of greed/give me entitlement and mis-placed justice for things that happened hudreds of years ago.

IGL, I'm glad you got a good judge on that. It's a sad state of things when 12 supposedly good citizens of the jury cannot see an original crime for what it is. A crime. The results of attempting to perpetrate the crime should not be blamed on the victim.

Yep - get a restraining order as Rick said. You will then have a record of their harassment in case they decide to escalate things and you have to defend yourself again.

We had something happen with us (Just verbal harassment and phone calls type stuff) By some Supposed friends/acquaintances After they stole @$300, and tried to get a Restraining order against them. We were told by the Courthouse that we could only get a RO/PO against a Husband/wife, GF/BF, that people we Know didn't qualify for a restraining order. After about 6 months they stopped though.

Unless I'm missing something in the reading I'm not certain that's correct. It may be that way in practice but I don't see anything in the law that precludes anyone from obtaining a restraining order from anyone else. Oh, Ken.

Well we've had some changes in the Laws since then. At that time we didn't have the "Castle Doctrine" Law either. Hopefully we were either lied to, to avoid paperwork, or the law has changed.

Excessive force is another one I don't understand. If someone comes at you with a knife intending to kill you and you pull a gun and shoot them, a jury could be twisted into believing that you used excessive force. Or that you went looking for an excuse to use the gun. Like you're supposed to just roll over because you have more fire power? It wasn't your choice some idiot decided to commit the crime of attacking you in the first place.

There are just too many people and not enough common sense to go around.

I guess that depends on where you live. Around here they are pretty sensible about that kind of stuff. I guess states with the Castle Doctrine, by and large, tend to be that way. Around here bringing a knife to a gun fight will get you self defense or dead depending on which side you're on.

I've seen some really terrible pictures of copper thieves that didnt make out so well. I remember hearing about a couple of guys trying to steal down grounds from 115KV highlines. The funny thing( I guess death isnt really funny) is that the grounds they were stealing were just copper-clad and not worth anything. They were cutting the wire at ground level and hooking it to their pickup and driving ahead to pull the staples and break the connection from the static line. The static line is above the conductors and they ended up getting a ground into 1 phase of the transmission line. There was nothing left of them and not a whole lot left of their truck!

The scrap value of what killed them was probably less then the gas they used to get dead! Karma....

Having had 10 domestic violence charges in the past, I guess he found out that getting in the face of a man with a gun wasn't quite the same as a defenseless woman. While I probably would have handled it quite differently, I will not lose any sleep over the scum that used to get his jollies from beating women.
