Seems like everything drives up the price of something lately. I wonder if prices ever get driven down.

I honestly do not think prices of much of anything will be going down, much less food. Taxes, weather, costs of fuel, subsidies for crops we do not need, small farms being pushed or bought out, genetically altered seeds to grow only in certain soil make-ups..... all of this will make store bought foods go higher..........then add in demand Vs availability.
6 weeks ago, I bought the exact items, no change what so ever 2 weeks apart. I kept my receipt as proof from both shopping trips. First trip was $52 and the next trip was $73. I showed this to the manager who I know very well and all he said was "BUY what is on sale and use coupons."
My Weds/Sunday papers have crap coupons and to get them online, you have to give your lifes history and answer 500 question surveys, 2 hours of online time just to get a $1.00 coupon or you must buy 6 of something to gain $.50 cents. The time Vs value is just not there for coupons. What is on sale at the store is damn near not fit to eat.
Buying in bulk works a little if you truly know how to store items, if not, then you lose the bulk value in the trash.
Where I live, food gardens under 2 acres are NOW illegal, you cannot grow your own foods, no exceptions, not even tomatos. Ya just have to love local, state and feds thinking on this. They say it will stimulate the economy because everyone will have to go BUY stuff. People are actually getting arrested and served a class 3 misdemeanor for growing food, people are turning other people in for it.
I personally hunt to suppliment my food value. Deer are the best time Vs value animal there is in my area. Rabbits along the rail systems is the second best value Vs time in my area. You do have to get some game with fat on them though and not just eat rabbits. I tried trapping but the time Vs. value was just not there. I have bartered some of my made rustic furniture and guns for American Bison sides. I have also traded/bartered for corn, tomatos and various beans and grains. Long term storage will only get you so far as when you finally do need to replace what you used, the inflation will have eatin up any savings you gained in the past.
No, sadly, prices will not go down... as demand and other issues raise, prices too shall raise.
It is going to get much worse - long before it gets better in my humble opinion.

I agree with Ohio...I don't see the current prices going down any time soon...if at all. :( Sucks too...I like to eat.

Largely in part to this thread I changed my signature. Personally I think it is a crime against humanity to "outlaw" growing your own food regardless of size or acreage. I'm sure if our forefathers had seen this coming, it would have been added to our Bill of Rights, along with the other freedoms guaranteed by that great Document. I could care less if another form of money by any nation was minted ever again when money is more important than being able to eat without making someone else's pocket fat in the process. I know some are "All for progress", but when it interferes with the basic need for life, then it has crossed the wrong boundaries. If this is where we are headed, then I think it is time to turn it around and regress, instead of progress. The problem there is that in many ways there are laws governing just "How far" we are even allowed to go in that direction as well.
Money is the root of modern day greed, Greed is the root of all evil. We live in truly evil times. I actually fear for the future of my children.
I confess I'm a little perplexed why folks are surprised that prices go up. Prices have always gone up because of inflation and supply and demand. Twenty years from now prices will still be going up. As long as one person wants to make more money than they have been prices will rise. It's really pretty simple.

That's true and certainly Logical. However what makes me angry is the gov't. stepping in and saying you can't grow your food UNLESS you have "X Number of land area". That is what MY ire is directed at. This IMO Constitutes a violation of every humans basic needs to survive. We aren't talking "Luxuries" here, but basic necessities. When a gov't., ANY gov't. steps in and starts depriving you of your access to meet your basic necessities then THAT IMO is Criminal. We aren't talking about a persons ability to access things that they can't provide for themselves, but rather the denial of a persons ability to provide for themselves independently. That is just NOT what this country was founded on. It is downright Inhumane.
Would you still show the same disregard of the issue if the Gov't suddenly said, "You aren't allowed to breath air anymore unless you buy it from 'The Air Industry', This will in turn boost our economy. You are no longer able to breathe free air."

It is true, I also believe we need to regress rather than progress in many aspects of our lives. The laws for no gardens less than 2 acres is in Cleveland and Cuyahoga county. People/families have left in droves to Lorain, Summit and Medina counties just to be able to grow their own foods as they see fit.
Until the elites/politicians/do gooders feel the pain they are imposing onto us low level citizens, the insane decisions will NOT stop. I honestly in my heart and after long thinking on this, the monetary system truly needs to collapse for things to change. Just changing it lets say to the "Amero," under the NAU (North American Trade Agreement, North American Union) will not change the greed, it will only serve to promote it.
I personally feel I am minimally ready for the down fall, if not, I am at least more preparred for a much different life under a collapsed monetary system than others around me. Soon and I really mean SOON.....before 2012 elections, the money system will be NILL. I started bartering, trading and MAKING my own things to trade about 7 years ago.....I make $80 on a bench, I go buy ammo, guns, sugar, tobacco, coffee, booze.....those will be the currancy along with knowledge and trades skills of the very near future. Gold and silver will only last so long...you cannot eat gold or silver and it surly will not cure you of an ill.
I HIGHLY recomend reading a book named "Out of the Ashes," by William W. Johnstone, if you can find an early edition, they do not tend to have the PC versions in it.
We are ONE terrorist attack away from being in the stone age, how long do you think our luck will hold out before our water supply, power or food systems come under direct attack? How will you fare in a food or water riot?
Prices will keep going up until the balloon goes up and breaks. It can literally happen over night.... look at Greece, Egypt, UK, Arabia and even our own real estate in the USA...........very soon, we are next. It is not "IF" it is truly "when." 3rd world countries do not feel it as much as "Advanced" countries because they have nothing to lose to begin with. Learning to live simply and rather quickly will be the best investment you can possibly give your family.
Personally, regardless of laws, I live free and always will, there is always a way to be free, you just have to find the right path for it for your individual needs.

Well, I have a bit of good news on this front. Prices for fresh veg grown in UK has gone down to about the same as it was before the bad weather we had before and over Christmas.
I'd like to see a link on that, Poco. I've never seen anything that regulates what you can or can't grow.

Rick, I will get that for you sometime tomorrow, the Cleveland and Cuyahoga laws that regulate gardens under 2 acres. It is a fact that in other areas of the country the feds have regulated small garden making of breads sold on the side of the road.... (regulating of commerace 10th article of the Constitution).... and that particular case was even for the possibility of it, not the actual practice.
Okay, steed of a different hue. You're talking about regulating commerce, not growing food. We've talked about that before. I'd still like to read through the link on food growing. I've never seen anything that hints at that. Certainly not around here anyway.

What makes this different, it is a city and county doing it.... regulating size of gardens for home use. This is not the state or the feds. It has been in place for over 2 years now and some families truly ruined due to they now being criminals.... all of this to save the grocery stores from losing business. It is a law/regulation to SAVE big business, not the individual citizen. Mr Frank Jackson Mayer of Cleveland and the now indicted Jimmy Demora of Cuyahoga County got these laws in place, law suits years away from being adjudicated. In the mean time the laws are in place. As this goes on, prices of local food just goes up.

I don't think any of us are surprised that prices are going UP...I think we're surprised at the speed and the fact that while cost of living skyrockets, income plummets.

I will gather it all up tomorrow, so all can read the law/org/rulings ... it is an insane law and made for the wrong reasons. The only reason I stay here in Cleveland is for my very aging parents. When they pass, I am soooooooo out of here.

They may be higher, but I continue to be amazed at the $1 menu choices and all sorts of sales and specials I see all the time, even in NYC where everything costs more. All in all, IMO, the price of food hasn't gone up as much as say, housing and that's not bad.

Sure...if your family is acustomed to the dollar menu... Mine isn't.
I do the shopping each week. I use coupons and look for items on sale. I haven't seen food prices skyrocket. Perhaps they have in some locations but not here. The prices have gone up but no more so than other things. It's like the rest of your money. You choose how you use it and there are smart ways of shopping and not so smart ways. I think we did a thread not too long ago about ways to save money when shopping.

CS, I was making a general statement. I don't eat in fast food restaurants and my diet is flexible enough to take advantage of whatever deals and specials I find. If one week salmon's on sale, I'll buy it. If it isn't, but tilapia is, then that's what I'm fixing. If there's a deal on canned tuna, I'll stock up and always have that when no fresh fish are available at a price I want to pay. Same with everything else. I'm fine drinking soy milk, almond milk or real milk. My taste and diet are varied and as long as I'm eating healthy, I let the price determine what's on the menu.

I'd like to see that thread...I am thinking right now the difference is in what your eating. Most meals are started from scratch here.

Nothing but scratch here too. The only difference is perhaps that ours is a seafood/vegetarian diet.

It's an acquired taste but I actually prefer it to skim milk--the only real milk I buy. Used to love real 100% milk but of course that's off the table now.

Oh I do, but it's been a long time. That, and bbq, and a real good home-made bacon cheeseburger, country fried steak, on and on. All a distant memory.

If you eat when you're stressed, then you'll put on a few. If you run a few miles when you're stressed you won't put on any, in fact, you just might loose a few. Just sayin'.

Well - not sure if this is what some are thinking of, but the Commerce Clause has been used in the past. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wickard_v._Filburn I believe there are cases where it has been used since this case as well.

That is the first thing I have seen pertaining to the Constitution that I totally disagree with.Not that I disagree with it, just the SCOTUS's interpretation of said portion...Article 1 Section 8

I just wanted to suggest using a Restaurant Depot to stock up on food...get some friends or family involved, Charge each $20 and say you get 10 Families...Split it up equally ( Minus fuel) and then you have your very own small food co-op...You can grow it as much as you like...Maybe even become a little more financially secure in the process...BTW...This is my first post...I saw you were from Indiana...I am originally from the Frankfort area....

I eat a lot of wabbit, wild boar and venison, like tonight I made a vensison stir fry with one of those bags of birdseye frozen stir fry veggies in terryaki sauce ($1.97 per bag and comes with the sauce). I cannot even remember the last time I bought red meat at the grocery store. I am pretty methodical in what I eat, same stuff each week. My fish, I catch... mostly trout (rainbow, steelhead, brown and brooke), LM and SM bass and Lake Erie perch. One fish dinner a week. The only fish I buy is Tuna in the single serve envelopes, mostly the hickory smoked stuff. The birds I eat are the ones I have hunted for, grouse, pheasent, turkey and ducks/geese. I do not buy the bloated and hormoned chickens from the store.
My dry goods such as corn & corn meal, beans, soy and grains, I usually trade either services, furniture or guns/ammo (reloaded) for. I am a noodle/pasta freak and love them anyway they are.
The stuff I get at the store is dairy, eggs, oatmeal, loaves of bread, orange juice, potato items, green onions, garlic, celery, tomatos. Noodles/pasta of various kinds. There are usually no coupons or sales for what I get. I refuse to get a store buyer card, they want my dang SSN just to learn what I buy as I always pay cash, never use a debit/credit card.
I eat out once a week with the GF, she usually picks the place we go to.
I do not eat sweets and honestly cannot stand donuts and stuff like that. My snacks are crunchy veggies.
The fruits I eat are tangerines, grapes, persimmons, prunes, various berries, many of which when they are in season I go out and pick, many I freeze. The berries, plums and persimmons I pick fresh up at my land in West PA, usually enough to last me a year at one picking.
I guess if I was married or had a full time nite woman staying with me, my meals would be different. My meals are for ease and convenience, mostly one pot/pan meals. I cook very well over an open camp fire, but stove and oven cooking I am not so well versed in and it is very different to me.
The prices of the foods I buy has gone up drastically (either up in price or reduced in portion for the same price) in the last year. I try to shop at non union stores, we do not have a lot of choices here. We have Giant Eagle, Marcs, Aldis and Daves with Giant Eagle being the main super store and being very expensive in my opinion. The others are deep discount NO Name brand foods and honestly, you get what you pay for when it comes to odd and no named stuff.
I eat many hard boiled eggs (18 a week) and there is NO farm source near me, have to get the eggs via the grocery store.
Someone suggest where I am going wrong or need to adjust my thinking here ????? I spend at the store about $50 a week, my daughter is only here on the weekends from school and she is 22, so she grazes as she see's fit.

That's not what surprises me. Every time prices are raised the propogandist media has to spin a tale and give us a reason why,the reason given usually has nothing to do with supply and demand or inflation, what surprises me is that people buy it. Baaaaahhh! baaaaaahhh!
OhioGriz, You know you're area far better than I. Some folks are just stuck because they live in a one store town and there is no access to coupons. If you can't travel to another area then you are pretty much hostage to whatever price that store charges and the smaller mom and pops generally charge much more.
