well i've been hanging around for a few day's and thought i'd say hi.
the wife and i live off grid with the beautiful mountains of montana.
we have no running water,power, or anything that most folks think of. we snowmachine 5/6 months a year to get home and love it!!!
this computer is powered by a batt. bank and 4 solor panels-this is all that they are used for-
light is by candle or aladdin lamp. water is rain/snow.
we grow and raise all the food we can: pig, chickens, and buy or kill the rest.
we are thankful to have found such like minded folk's.
hope to learn from you all and enjoy good old conversation.
we are especially interested in hearing from folks from alaska.

should add: looks like were not the only ones here in MT off the grid (mosquitomountain and hermit) thay just found this place to it seems. can't wait to share with you all.

Wow! I feel like we should know you! We're in NW Montana. We don't have to use our snowcats to get out, but you'd better have a high-clearance 4-wheel drive rig to get up here! Spring is the worst, during break-up. Then we really are home-bound, but we love it!

i forgot to add that we also use our solar/batt bank for a 8 cu ft deep freezer.
we just got it last year so i forgot to mention it. we got it for wild game,chickens,and our pig we raised last year.
we do laundry here in the summer with buckets and a contraption we got from lehmans. in winter we do it in town at the laundromat.
we also hole up for a few weeks during speing break up. looks to be a good one this year. we already have close to 3' and it's still snowing today.
the garnets are a range between the blackfoot valley/helmville valley/and the clarkfork.

Yeah, especially in our dry climate! The reason we went with the washtubs and hand-cranked wringer is that we've been setting up our life so we don't need to purchase anything...such as gas for a generator or other motor.

Like wildwoman, we wrung by hand for a long time, then splurged on the wringer. It was cheaper than buying a washer, and should last a lifetime.

We did the rubber toilet plunger for a while too, but wore it out, so we got the rapid plunger. It, too, should last a lifetime...though if we live long enough we may have to cut back to changing clothes once a month to save on the rapid plunger! :FRlol: :lol:

LOL on the shirt. Washing by hand ehlps you understand why the old timers had their "Sunday" clothes doesn't it? It seems I change clothes more often than a teenage girl on days company is coming or we're going to town or church. The clothes I "work" in sometimes get a little grubby by wash day!

We first used an outdoor shower by the back corner of the cabin. It was a "solar shower" purchased at a camping supply store. On shower day we just kept everyone else on the other side of the house. No neighbors close enough to worry about. When the weather got too cold for that we'd bring a bathtub in and curtian off a corner for baths. We didn't have a drain so we had to dip the water out to dispose of it when finished. Then we graduated to an indoor bathroom. We had a combo bathtub/shower in it. Now we have a regular bathroom/laundry room with a shower stall. We take a kettle of hot water in it then use a cup to pour it over whatever needs washed. We put in a gray water system so we don't have to bail out the water anymore. We'll put in the wash tubs and drains next summer and install a composting toilet also.

When we moved here we still had four of our seven children at home with us. We moved into a 16 X 32 foot log cabin after evicting the packrats and doing some major cleanup and remodeling. We took possession the first part of August and by the end of Nov. we had our ten cords of firewood cut and stacked, the outhouse and root cellar ready (all dug by hand in ground that's more rocks than dirt), and the cabin ready to live in. The cabin was a mess. We installed lots of windows, another door, new roof and floor and chinked it while I was still working my job. The first winter the kids had a sleeping cave and platform. It was just large enough for their beds. Boys had the top platform and the girls were underneath at floor level. They never compained once about the crowded conditions. We had no electricity (kerosene lights) or running water but the cabin stayed warm despite temps of -30 F that winter. I came home from work the opening day of deer season and shot a 10 pt. whitetail about 200 yards from the cabin. I butchered it and my wife canned it the next day. We did a lot of X-country skiing and sledding!

It's a great life!!!

Like MMM said, we take a kettle of water in the shower and dip from it for showers. We keep an old pressure canner on the woodstove and bring in snow to keep it filled. It holds close to 5-gallons. We set the kettle on an upside-down 5-gallon bucket to get it up off the floor.

The pressure canner was found at the dump, missing it's lid. I use a lid from an enameled kettle, to speed up heating the rain or snowmelt.

The weed sprayer is an exellent idea! Never thought of that!

yeah the weed sprayer works great. we got the ideal a few years ago from Backwoodsman magazine.
we collect and store rain water (when it's not winter of course) in 50 gal barrels that are inside. that is our drinking water. for other water uses, in winter we melt snow in 5 gal. buckets by the wood stove. we fill them with snow everyday leaving about 5 in. of water in the bottom. this way you can get much more snow/water at a time in each bucket. works great!
we've got about 20 gal. melted right now. that's all used for the dogs and chickens as well as for bathing and cooking.
in the summer we pump water (400') uphill from the creek for our garden. we have around 400 gal. outside storage capacity for our garden needs as well as sprinklers we use with the pump. plus we used the pump to make mud puddles for "the porky" that we raised last summer.
