View Full Version : Airport & Tarmac Survival
Reading this week's news reports about the tens of thousands of stranded airline passengers, many stuck for days in airports that had run out of food, reminded me of a flight I took to Florida in February of 1996.
Even with the snow beginning to fall, we had arrived at Logan with plenty of time to spare, got our suitcases checked, and had our boarding passes in hand. I watched the snow whip around on the runway, thinking that by 2:00 pm, after a short stop in Cleveland, I'd be on the beaches of Ft. Lauderdale, mingling with the spring-breakers in their string bikinis.
Just after 8:00, the announcement came that our 8:30 flight would be delayed. So what? On the beach by 3:00, right?
Well, Continental finally boarded us at 1:00, and we taxied out a few minutes later. And then we sat there behind about a dozen other planes. At 3:00, the flight attendants passed out drinks. At 4:00, we were asked not to use the restrooms unless "absoloutely necessary." At 5:00, we were informed that a runway was being cleared for departure. The announcement that there was no more beverages or food aboard came a few minutes later.
The rest of the day was a disaster. We finally departed at 6:00 pm, after spending 5 miserable suffocating hours on the tarmac. I suspected something was wrong when they had us get off the plane in Cleveland - we weren't supposed to change planes - and then they finally bussed us off to a hotel sometime around midnight. Seems they sent a different plane from Cleveland to Ft. Lauderdale even before we had left Logan. Yep, they new they weren't bringing us to Florida, but they didn't tell us that while we were still in Boston. They kept us on the plane "for security reasons." Bull$hit.
Ever since that day, I've boarded every flight I've taken with a carry-on bag stuffed with candy bars, snacks, a few sandwiches, an assortment of any meds I may need, tissue packs, a toiletry kit, an inflatable pillow, and a couple of good books. I also bring along a couple of empty 1-liter bottles that I fill with water after clearing TSA.
I'll grant you that TSA may not allow you to carry most of your survival gear aboard your flight, but there are a number of things you CAN take with you that will make such an eventuality far more tolerable.
One last thing......... most (all????) airlines no longer accept cash for ANYTHING. Baggage check-in, on-board snacks, you name it - all must be paid for with a credit card. Always bring a card with plenty of available credit (or a debit card with a decent balance) whenever you go away. You never know what will happen. Flights may be delayed or cancelled, you may need to extend your stay and obtain additional hotel accomodations, you may need to return earlier than scheduled and find it necessary to book a flight on a different airline, or a whole host of other unexpected events may come about. Which airline was it that went bankrupt a few years back, leaving thousands of people stranded?
Just remember, events that are mere inconveniences at home can prove to be nightmares when you're away from home.
That's getting harder and harder to do. I always carried snacks and picked up water once I was passed security. I've been stuck on flights for extended periods before. Once because of snow at BWI and once because of thunderstorms at Dallas. But taking a carry on is getting to be expensive with some airlines. Cargo pockets bulging with goodies. Yeah, that's the ticket.

I was watching on CNN about people that have been sitting on a plane for over 11 hrs,, why ? because there was not an available gate to park at,, so heres my question,, If I were on that plane, i would want TO GET OFF,, I would gladly walk into the airport, but they would not let anyone off,, now,, isn't that kidnapping or something ? isn't it a crime to hold someone against their will ?
on a side note,, I seen a guy standing in line inside the airport ,, he was wearing a backpack complete w/ sleeping bag,,, he looked like he was hiking on the trail,, lol,,, he had the right idea and looked like he could handle just about any inconvenience they could throw at him :)

I avoid flying when ever I can. I just don't care for regulations that leave me feeling unprepared.

I ALWAYS bring a carry on packed to live off of it if my luggage never reaches it's destination. I even started bringing along freeze dried Mountain House pouches because you never know when or if you'll be able to buy anything beforehand or on board. I also pack a flashlight, space blanket and lots of large moist towelettes.
All this, because once I've been left high and dry in a God forsaken country, and that's all it took.

That's what happened at BWI, Justin. We got parked waaaaaaaay out on the tarmac because no flights could leave and we didn't have a gate. We could see the terminal but, and trust me on this, you would not have walked it with the snow and wind. It was a long way over there. We were only on the tarmac for 3 hours and somehow a gate opened up. They must have shuffled some planes around because nothing was flying.
We got hung on the tarmac in Dallas for 4 hours because a thunderstorm knocked out the radar and they were operating on visual flight rules. It wasn't too bad because the pilot let folks get out of their seats and the flight attendants served drinks. That was pretty cool. I talked to some folks later that were on different flights and they had to stay seated with their seat belt on and no drinks. Stupid.

I always have enough stuff in a carry-on to make the trip and an overnight without luggage. Been caught too many times. And it's not always the airport you're leaving from that gets messed up. If the place you are going to is getting socked, your plane doesn't take off either. I've been re-directed from Dallas to Los Angeles (or Denver) to Boston to avoid storms at the Chicago O'Hare hub. I refuse to do overnights at the airport if the weather is good enough to get out. They have lists of hotels you can call and you can usually get a very good rate because of a holdover. I've paid only $40 for a $200 room more than once.
I'm glad I don't fly as much now. Too much hassle.

Real nice you guys!! I don't use airports here in NJ for that reason. I go Philly our the Leighigh Airport anymore. The TSA folks there at least speak English

It seems a big problem is the current TSA rules. Can you bring a survival pack on board with you stuffed with food? I'm pretty sure you can't bring your own beverages anymore. You're basically at their mercy.
You can bring on board anything you purchase after you get through security. Nearly all airports have some form of shopping after security that will let you pick up liquids such as coffee, water, tea, etc. As long as your food stuffs pass through security then you'll be fine. Otherwise, you can pick up some items after security. I've never even had them question my fire starter or my char cloth. I'm not sure they'd know what it was even if I told them. I wouldn't use the term "Fire starter", however.

In my shoulder bag I carry extra cash, credit card, ID (passport). I also have food bars, water, para cord, space blanket, fire starting kit, flash light, phone charger and book. It goes or my pockets are full of good stuff.
I was in Atlanta on Christmas day this year and at 6:30 am I got the word of my flight cancellation. I had a hard time finding a rental car. I went to about six different rental agencies before I found a car. The guy told me to "pick any car on the lot" for my section. There was only one car in my section! I thought that was pretty funny. I was able to spend some unexpected Christmas with family. BTW, those smart phones are great in so many ways.
I worked with a guy who was stuck in Detroit. He said the cabbies were charging a hundred bucks just to drive you to the hotel at the airport perimeter. The reason for extra cash.
I've had to evacuate a hotel in the middle of the night for a fire. I was standing outside in the cold rain watching the fire trucks for a couple of hours. I had my shoulder bag. The two things that helped the most that night were my flash light and space blanket. I'm glad I was ready!
It's your responsibility to be ready. It's also your choice to be happy and flexible or rigid and grumpy. When (not if) life throws you a curve you can go fetal or you can handle the situation knowing that in time it will pass. If that doesn't work for you then there's that old saying: "Time to spare, go by air. Gonna fuss, take the bus". Oh yea, the next time you think that you've had the worst flight, ask yourself. Are your clothes on fire?
Your point about the flashlight is an excellent one. Everyone that travels should carry one. I was in a hotel in Tampa when the power went out. No emergency lighting. The only light shining was my flashlight. It got a pretty good work out that morning. And if you are in that fire, a smoke filled hallway can be pretty difficult to navigate. Down low where smoke is less dense a flashlight might be a huge help. And don't forget your room key in case you have to get back in!!

I often marvel at the logic behind some of the airline rules designed only to bring them in more cash. For example, most airlines are now charging fees (Delta's is $25.00) for even the first checked bag. It used to be that the first bag, within certain limits, was free. This sucks because I always like to have one checked bag so that I can have my pocketknife with me at my destination. It'll probably be better now to just mail one to myself at the hotel where I will be staying or to just buy one after arriving.
Some airlines are also looking at placing fees on carry-on bags. The first U.S. airline to do so was "Spirit" air which is charging $25-$40 for any bag to be placed in an overhead bin. Briefcases, camera bags, etc. that will fit under the seat are not currently charged. Be assured, more will follow. American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, US Airways and JetBlue Airways have all "promised" not to levy such fees. I bet they will change their tune within the next year or two.
When they do start charging for such bags, you can bet my pockets are going to become much more stuffed with things and/or I will (after getting through security) hide a bag under my jacket making me just look a bit pudgy - fitting in with most other Americans. Which brings me to my real pet peeve...
The thing that really bothers me is that I have seen people who personally weigh more (and take up more space) than me and all my luggage put together climbing onto the same plane as I, and they surely didn't pay any more for their ticket than I. I once had a guy sit next to me who took up his whole seat AND HALF OF MINE!!!. I didn't get any reimbursement for being made to sit for a 4 hour flight in half a seat. (The plane was full so, there was nowhere else the stewardess, who seemed genuinely empathetic to my plight, could have moved me.) Now, I board as quickly as I possibly can and make sure the armrest is securely down so as to ensure I get to "enjoy" the whole seat I purchased.
I always take a carry-on with some food, a water bottle, extra cash, credit card(s), a blanket, a travel pillow, a flashlight, a phone charger, and something to read. I do also like to take some kind of fire starting kit and a few other sundry "survival" items. The water bottle I take through security empty and then fill it later at either a drinking fountain or a bathroom sink.
As a rule, I prefer to drive whenever and wherever I travel. I only fly when there simply is no other reasonable option.
Ditto with me. I once stood in the galley the whole flight because the woman next to me must have weighed an easy 400+ pounds. She literally wedged herself into her AISLE seat. When the flight attendant asked why I was standing back there I just said 26D (or whatever the seat was). She looked down the aisle and back at me. "Oh," was all she said. When it came to land she told me I'd have to take my seat I told her to just kill me.
I wonder what the airlines will do when everyone walking up looks like the Michelin Tire Man from all the junk they have stuffed in their clothes?
