Had the TV on, sound off while working on a project.

I happened to glance up and see a half dozen Navy Seals in full SCUBA, walking along with their M4 rifles apparently loaded, mags in place, rifles at assualt ready, pointing foreward.

They were on the ocean bottom with 25 feet of water over their heads.

I was really wanting someone to touch off a shot!

Actually, guns shoot under water pretty well. I've shot Glocks fully submerged, and see no reason an M4 should't fire, too. The action may not cycle, but it should fire with no problem.

That's really odd. When I was in SE Asia we had to watch out for simple capilary action drawing water into the bores and blowing up the rifles if we did not drain the water from the bores before pulling the trigger. Drip from the vegitation would fill the bores and we had to lock the bolts back when fording streams. The first thing we did when leaving water was drain the bores.

Water will not compress fast enough to get out of the way of the expanding gasses in the bore. It is the same as pulling the trigger on a plugged bore.

For whatever reason, your post got me thinking about something else that I'll bet you could answer for me, Kyrat...Have you ever used electrical tape over the bore to protect capilary action from pulling water in the bore? I've been told that shooting through the tape even helps accuracy in some calibers because it keeps pressures constant but I've never tested this.

I'd think that all that water in the bore would increase champer pressure dramatically. It won't compress and would have to be pushed out of the bore by the bullet/expanding gasses. I had snow plug a 22 rifle barrel once and it blew the rim out on the case. Can't imagine what water would do.

If Myth busters tries it let me know. I'd like to see that one.

I stand corrected! Just did a search on YouTube and they have videos of people shooting guns underwater. I watched several including one with a Glock and one with an AR 15. Both firearms and shooters survived but don't expect much bullet travel. (About ten feet with the AR!)

I think I will trust every firearms manufacturers advice before I trust the doctored u-tube vids. Were they measuring for the damage done after each shot? How about cracked plastic frames? Bolt setback? Bulged barrels?

How many posts do we see where everyone is yelling "No +p+" and "I would never use a handload in my guns!", but shooting them under water and superdroupling the preasure is OK? Even if you gun is rated for +p+ the instructions that come in the box will say "Check for bore obstructions".

I have seen many rifles with ringed barrels from firing with obstructions. The gun survived, but was ruined. I have also cut some barrels back several inches after the muzzle was turned into something resembling a rotten banana peel. Hardly a hunting season went by, while I was operating my shop, that I did not see a gun ruined by firing through a barrel obstruction.

I know several old timers running around with less than a full handfull of fingers from touching off 12 ga shotguns with mud or snow plugged bores.

Mythbusters did a test with a .270 rifle several years back and finally welded a bolt into the bore and blew it up. They called the myth busted, but they did not mike the barrel after each shot or check the headspace, bolt strech, locking lug cracks or any other critical aspect. They only counted the big boom and split as a factor. It did build my confidence in the 700 Rem though.

Electrical tape or duct tape OVER the muzzle is recommended in wet weather. In WW2 they issued condoms to put over the muzzle of the weapons on beach landings. Between WW2 and my tour in the swamp they did not change their reccomendation of "no water in the bore" and "don't pull the trigger underwater!".

Problem with present day assualt rifles is the flash hider. You can cover the hider and the muzzle is still unprotected. In the smaller bores the water running down the barrel will be drawn into the muzzle by capulary action. It is like putting you finger over a straw or using a pipette. The water actually runs uphill into the bore.

I suppose that anyone that wants to shoot underwater or with a barrel full of snow can do so. I have seen the results, and it is not pretty.

The glock was fired several times in succession. Functioned well each time.

The guy was in a wet suit in a couple of them and completely underwater. Could have been doctored up. But I don't think so. There was also one as part of a weapons test. They were dipped in the water, fired underwater then fired above the water level. Looked legit. Check them out for yourself. I just went to YouTube and typed in "shooting underwater."
