Because conventional photovoltaic panels produce electricity directly from sunlight, the energy they generate must either be used as it is produced or stored – either in batteries or by using the electricity to produce a fuel that acts as a storage medium for the energy. Now U.S. and Swiss researchers have developed a prototype device that directly converts the Sun’s rays into fuels that can be stored, allowing the energy to be used at night or transported to locations where it is needed.

there are also solar collectors that concentrate and direct solar radiation onto molten salt reservoirs which can be well insulated against heat loss, and store heat energy long term as well. it may not be as long term a solution, but the technology is simple, and the heat can still produce mechanical - and subsequently; electrical - energy when the sun's not shining.

nah; still holding out for the home-workshop, small scale Thorium/molten salt breeder reactor...

hah. i'll have to look into this technology. the biggest hurtle i can see so far is that hydrogen compression/condensation requires a heck of a lot of energy as it is. maybe prohibitively so. none of the routes for usable hydrogen sequestration seem terribly efficient, they they hold an incredible amount of promise.

Isn't the biggest by-product of using hydrogen, water vapor.....which is a far worse greenhouse gas than co2?

fog is water vapor. clouds are water vapor. your breath is largely water vapor. the thing about water vapor is that it is not a stable gas under earth's atmosphere. it condenses every chance it gets into liquid, which liquid is the most abundant compound on the surface of the earth, one of the most reactive solvents and it has been doing so without great harm since there has been a planet. i'm not worried about water vapor, unless it's hot steam burning me at the moment.

Yes, all those things are water vapor, but some of the reading I've done (no....really! LOL) says that water vapor has more of an effect on temps than any other gas, in the atmosphere.

On the bright side, water vapor (as a by product) is very easy to control. When it comes out.....cool it. Then you just have water.:balloon:

literature - particularly internet literature - is full of specious arguments against almost every promising technology. it's not hard to sort through the bull**** when the bull**** is suggesting cold steam could pollute worse than the likes of benzene, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides and particulate soot.

people have said internal combustion engines where too impractical to be efficient for widespread use in transportation and industry. others said computers would never be small, usefull or cheap enough for public use.

it's not in what the literature claims but how sound the reasoning is, and how relevant the premise is to the reality of the situation.

I don't suppose that was quite what you where getting at anyway, but i run into it often enough i wanted to mention it.
