Is anyone watching this show? Aside from the Padre, these guys are about as near useless as any group of "survivors" I've ever seen on a show. So far, they've managed to smash two vehicles with a 40 ton hoe and kill a bear that had walked into its own back yard and eat food they had left out. The preacher did do a good job on the building. I'll give him dues for that.

I tried to watch it but the first episode drained my enthusiasm. The first 10 minutes of the show was them trying to start a frozen tractor. Turned channel.

Yep, that's the show. They are a bunch of nit wits. Lucky no one has been seriously hurt. They have no clue what they are doing, if it were not for the "experts" coming in to help, they'd not find a speck of gold. Will be interesting to see if they get lucky.

watching the first part real quick.

"There isn't one man in America - if he's got anything inside him - wouldn't want to be here with us"

tell you what sir; i've got something inside me: my insides. i wouldn't mind being up there but something tells me up there with you bunch would be a full time job just keeping my insides inside...

haha; seriously. i have no idea how much debt they're carrying between them.

the scene moving the generator reminds me of the time i almost got crushed by a crane operator between a big truss and the side of the house we where putting up. that guy probably had 20 years experience on one of those things too, but it didn't show that day.

When I worked outside we had a guy like the Real Estate agent. You could not work below him if he was on a pole because he dropped stuff all the time. We called him LOB. Short for Look Out Below.

If we had a big aerial splice job that would take a couple of days we would often swing up an aerial platform, which was covered by a tent if it was raining or cold. We could sit inside the tent on a milk carton and splice. We were working together on a platform and he got up, opened the tent and stepped out. Unfortunately, it was about 35 feet to the ground. He was fortunate there was snow on the ground and he didn't get hurt. He just got the wind knocked out of him. He forgot he was in the air. That was the biggest thing he ever dropped.

In fairness, we would often put tents up on ground jobs as well. If it was cold or rainy we had a tent we could put up to protect the cable and heaters we could put inside to stay warm. You don't want to work that job when the other guy had beer and boiled eggs the night before, either. Just sayin'.

Discovery's new show: "Gold Rush: Alaska!" has got me angry. I don't know how many of you watch this show, but several families, in an attempt to beat the economy, have either sold their homes, or mortgaged them to the hilt, then sold about everything else they own to start up a gold mine in Alaska. The thing that angered me is one of the worker's little daughter almost dies from a seizure, so they get around to checking their water source that they're using for drinking water, which turns out to probably be very bad! there's a beaver pond about 50' away! Why they didn't take care of this right at the beginning is anybody's guess!

I watched one episode, the one where they were unloading some big piece of machinery from a flat bed and the old guy almost broke it.

Then he goes on to say everyone has a way to do it or something like that. Yeah, his way was just wrong. Square up to the rig and lift straight up and have some guide wires on the thing so it doesn't swing.

I won't be watching it regularly.

I just got a CD disk from my old broken down computer and retrieved a few blogs I posted years ago. It is just some basic info I learned in what I call the "lost decade" but you may find interesting.

Gold Fever, part one

This blog may not seem consistent with survival but some people put value in gold. I personally will not be trading my food for gold but don't mind trading my gold for food. I would never invest in it, why should I when you can dig it out of the ground? Applying logic to knowledge of how gold deposits are formed will tell you how to find it. Gold and other heavy metals are deep in the earth and when water reaches those depths it is heated turning it into steam which rises back to the surface through veins (usually quartz). When this happens it will carry with it some minerals and deposit it along the vein. This is the "mother load" and must be drilled and blasted out of the rock. These veins also hit the surface and are eroded by water. The Quartz is beaten away from the gold and since the gold is so heavy it settles into what is called "placer deposits". To start you thinking logically about this if you find mineralized quartz with sharp edges, that would be a good sign. If gold is still attached to the quartz you are probably within 5 miles of the mother load. Gold is removed from rock like this by pulverizing it. When trying to find placer deposits try to imagine how the terrain was formed and remember that glaciers and water where at higher levels in the past and may have deposited gold at higher levels. Working these kinds of deposits is called high banking. Prospecting is looking for gold and mining is digging it up and another lesser known method is trapping. I am going to limit this blog to prospecting, trapping and hand methods of mining. Should you find a large deposit you would be better off selling the claim to a large mining company that has the knowledge and heavy equipment to develop the mine properly.
continued

Gold Fever, part two

When prospecting my first tip is completely unimaginative, but a good place to start. Look in areas that gold has been found in before. Research the mining history of the area. For Example, I live in an area that the source of the gold has never been found. Much can be learned by historical research. Remember that gold is heavy and will settle to the deepest point it can which is cracks in the bed rock. Look for exposed bed rock to work. Clay will also stop gold from sinking any further and working the top layer can be productive, but be sure to work it slowly breaking it all up by hand otherwise a piece of clay will roll through your sluice box picking up all the gold it comes in contact with and roll out the other end. Small gold can be found where water slows down or where it speeds up. With its weight it can be the last thing to be washed away. This will become apparent in sand bars and on beaches. Gold is not the only heavy mineral so look for black sands which are mainly Iron. Gold will settle into the same area. This is why I don't use metal detectors, I don't need to find every old nail or piece of iron out there. They will tell you that no metals are present which can save time. When metal is passed through a magnetic field it causes electricity which is how metal detectors work, You must keep it swinging for it to work properly. Sampling with a gold pan is a good method to find hot spots.

I learned a method from an old prospector 40 years ago that I havn't seen anybody using when working creeks is to use an underwater scope. That is simply a piece of pipe with piece of glass taped to one end. You put it down into the water and look in crevasses. Use a small garden hand trowel to force current to wash overburden and use tweezers to pick up nuggets. Pry bars and crevasse tools you make to dig dirt out of crevasses will be helpful too. My next blog will cover trapping gold, and hand mining.

continued

Gold Fever, part three

Rain showers, storms and spring melt cause a lot of erosion moving tons of dirt doing most of the work for you. Working the beaches after a storm has concentrated the gold is one example. Glaciers that cross a gold vein continually produce gold year after year. Creeks that rise in the spring will wash dirt down stream. There are a lot of natural places where gold will get trapped and when you find them go back and check them. You can also make your own, some times it is as simple as anchoring a piece of angle iron in a creek. A well developed gold trap line is the most efficient and environmentally friendly way to mine gold. This is where an under water scope is useful.
There are many methods and types of equipment for mining. I suggest you start with basic hand tools and if you find a good pay streak the gold you find will pay for that investment and you will be able to get the right equipment for working that specific terrain. This is what I use,
1. Two 5 gallon plastic buckets. Believe it or not, it is easier to carry two buckets than it is to carry one, the load is balanced.
2. Classifiers are made to fit these buckets which I like, but you can use any heavy screen. Removing the rocks and pebbles increase the efficiency of you sluice and requires less water flow.
3. A small spade shovel with a long handle. Both these features will save your back and the small head of the shovel will get into tighter spaces.
4. A small pick.
5. Crevasse tools and pry bar.
6. I prefer the small aluminum sluice boxes, but you can make on out of wood easy enough.
7. Gold pan
8. Snuffer bottle for sucking up fine gold when it shows up in pan and a pair of tweezers for the nuggets.
9. Small bottles to put your gold in.
10. Under water scope.
11. A magnet
12. A pack board to carry it all.
My next and last blog on the subject will tell you how to use this stuff.
continued

Gold Fever, part four

The cleaning process goes like this:
1. Sift material through screen, pour water over rocks to allow smaller material to drop through screen, also using water will make nuggets easy to see. I have two screens, one is 1/4 inch and the other is much finer for working areas where only fine gold is present. Disregard the material that doesn't pass through screen.(except for those 1/2 inch nuggets of coarse).
2. Set sluice in creek and build a small dam if necessary to increase water flow. Increasing the angle of the box may be necessary if water flow is insufficient to push material through box. Running only classified material through box is most efficient. Make sure box remains level from side to side otherwise the riffles will fill up on one side and the material will pass through box without touching them. Don't add material so fast the riffles plug, give the box time to work material.
3. Empty the concentrates for sluice into a gold pan for further concentration. Be sure to thoroughly liquefy the material so the gold will sink to the bottom and wash of the top layers. When reduced to black sands swirl water and gold will appear at the leading edge. Remove this gold with a snuffer bottle and tweezers. Save the black sand concentrates for next step.
4. Through out the winter when I have time I take the black sand concentrates and dry them out in a pan on the wood stove. When dry put a small amount on a paper plate. This is where the magnet comes in. Most of the concentrates will be magnetite and iron. Put the magnet under the plate and the magnetic field will cause the material to stand up. Using a swirling motion work it over to the side and off the paper plate. Repeat process several times. What remains on the plate will be gold and dust. To separate lightly blow on it. You will be amazed at how fine the gold that you recover will be and you achieved it without the use of any toxic chemicals like mercury or sodium cyanide.
This is a great hobby, a good excuse to get outdoors, and beats standing on a street corner with a cardboard sign for an income. Don't quit your day job or invest large amounts of money in your operation or anybody elses for that matter. I believe in God and Luck and if they believe in you, you can get rich, otherwise you'll just have some fun, put together some nice jewelry for your wife, and be able to scrape together a few bucks in hard times.
The End

The nice thing about some of the retarded folks that come up here is that they occasionally leave good eqiupment for cheap as they run back down to the lower 48 with their tails between their legs!
I haven't watched it, but in the few years we have been up here we have seen many folks come and go just like the descriptions you all have given of this show. I frequent the classifides, radio, intenet and paper and the deals abound if you know where to look. I got a free Dodge Dakota pickup and an older 4X4 ATV for free as people were desperate to get out of here. Mostly from the other half (read wives or girlfriends) giving an ultimatum or people not realizing how expensive and inaccessable and difficult most of the state really is.
I'm just waiting on the free land and cabins to show up! :)

For me it was like reading one of Native Dudes posts. 3 lines into I could tell this was another case of dreamers meeting reality. The telling point will be if they can let go of all they think they know. It is a common thing and dooms many to failure no matter what thier endeavor. At some point they will be asking themselves if there was so much gold there why are people with more knowledge and experience not there digging it up. They have a small window to get lucky in before mechanical failure, winter and reality sets in.

I wondered the same thing. They leased the claim from another miner. If it was so rich in gold why wasn't he working it? You just wonder if the land owners seed the ground in an effort to "show" cheechakos just how much gold is in them thar hills.

I turned it on, heard the old white haired dude's extremely irritating voice, saw some people freaking out because they left food out and a bear got it, saw one guy say he's not gonna let them bears get his kids, saw them head off in the bush to look for said bear, and realized that this show sucks. We call them "paper stakers". Some people just watch like vultures to stake claims on land that missed a lease payment. They never work the ground and find it profitable to sell or lease claims and wait for them to fail and reclaim it to sell to the next sucker. The bueracrats support this and sooner or later the forrest service, MSHA, the EPA will be coming down on them because a Kayakers outdoors experience was ruined by the sight of them working the sluice. It's the lure of easy money that draws the low lifes to gold fields.

Rick

There is another thing that draws people to gold mining. The woods are a safe haven for criminals and gold is another form of money that only honest people pay tax on. It is untracable and under the table deals make life possible for criminals that would be caught anywhere else. I'm sure the reason so many of them wear beards are to hide thier faces. Most everything is done off the books and under the radar. I once hired out to do security for all the whiskey I could drink. I sat on the hill all day drinking whiskey with my rifle. When I finished a bottle I would walk it down to the sluice box and set it on a support. If any body got to close to the box I would just shoot the bottle. It got them even more nervous when I missed. It's not like they were going to run to the police.

I'm a bit surprized the state is letting them get away with so much. I know the state is subsidizing movie makers to encourage them to come to Alaska but these guys are getting away with things the state would never let me get away with. Trading logs to sawmill and building permenent structures are a definate violation. They restrict that if you are mining for gold the only resource you extract is gold. I noted other violations too. I think the only thing keeping this operation afloat is the video production.

That the state is letting them get away with it. I'm surprised the Fish and Wildlife guy didn't notice any other infractions, but just cause the show is on, doesn't mean the state knows about all the laws they are breaking. Hell, the stuff state inspectors miss around here is a joke.

That the state is letting them get away with it. I'm surprised the Fish and Wildlife guy didn't notice any other infractions, but just cause the show is on, doesn't mean the state knows about all the laws they are breaking. Hell, the stuff state inspectors miss around here is a joke.

I've dealt with too many of them, they are turning a blind eye. I've had 3 claims of my own and worked a dozen others. Believe it. I can even even dig up some old photos I kept of my last claim as proof of my reclaimation work I had to do if I need to prove it to you. I know thes bastards. Do you? There was no mention of even an andronomous permit for the water access. They aren't that stupid. I have had state geologists come on my my claim to access if I was pulling enough gold out ground to justify claim and the guy did not know the difference between yellow paint chips that fell from my Cat and gold but they do know thier regulations and try to use them to shut down every small miner in the state.

Well it seems that the first season has ended in a sorta anti-climatic non show.

Now it seems that the planted claim guy is swooping in and taking over the claim?

Anyway, beginning to wonder, as everyone was sooooooo broke, that they are gonna start over in a different spot in the Yukon?

Not sure if I can handle watching any more of this.

I watched a few episodes and quite frankly couldn't stand it anymore. The almost smartest guy there was Dorsey, when he left and went to work on the fishing boat. He should have stayed working that and settling down there. What made him nuts, was going back to the mine.

It's kinda like folks taking rent money to the track or the casino isn't it? When they flew back up to find a new claim I was wondering if they used what was left of everyone's money (chuckle).
