I pulled into Krogers fuel island yesterday and started pumping gas in the truck. I looked over and a young gal was sitting in her car on the edge of the lot with a flat tire. She had pulled the donut out of the trunk but was sitting inside warming up. The temp was about +12.

Oh, man. I really don't want to do this, I thought as I continued to pump gas. It's just tooooo cold to change tires. But that could have been my daughter so...... I finished pumping gas and climbed in the truck to pull over and help her. To my surprise another guy beat me over there and was changing the tire. I was happy someone was helping her and happy that I didn't have to do it. Happy that there are still good guys around that help other folks.

So here's one for you.

I was fueling up my truck, cold weather, young lady comes up to me, and asked if I had a dollor or two, that I could spare.

Her story was that she was on her way home from collage, for Christmas break.
Had run out of money and almost out of gas, still had 350 mile to go to get home.
She said if enough people kicked in a buck or two, she could be on her way.

So being a good guy, and not wanting her to spend time out in the cold, basically begging a buck or two from a bunch of people...........
I told her to get her car and I would fill up her tank.

She said no, she wanted the cash?

So paid my bill and went on my way, didn't give her any cash.

Was the story a scam?......What did she want cash instead of gas, for?
It kinda bothered me, but I was trying to be a good guy, thinking the tank of gas would solve the problem, and was turned down.

What would y'all have done?

hunter, sadly the "I'm out of gas" story is a common one. I have gotten it many times. In fact, so many times, I feel bad for the poor sap who actually runs out of gas and needs a few bucks for it -- because no one will believe him. The woman's refusal of your offer pretty much confirms that that's all it was, a story. :(

I hate to assume the worst, but sadly it's usually true, most of the time, cash only = drugs.

The funniest was when I listened to the sob story about how one young lady was trying to get home for a visit and I said to her --- Huh? who would have thought that you would've gotten stuck on the way home - at the same grocery store - three weeks in a row? Sadly, scams are everywhere.

BTW, I'm raising my 11 year old son right! The other day we stopped at Wendy's for some supper after Christmas shopping for his mother and there was a scammer at the pay phone. He got the guy ahead of us and said he had broke down and needed to call his brother to get a ride home. The guy handed him a handful of change and went into the store. My son watched him for a minute and right as we were about to walk into the store he told the man that " the least he could do is pretend to use the phone"!

Kurt Warner NFL quarterback, now retired, was asked about something that he and family does pretty regularly, by Jay Leno.

When out to dinner, they pick out someone or another family and buy their meal, anonymously.

As paying back all the kindness and breaks he had in his mixed career.

So I would like to think I give the benefit of the drought, mostly, whether it helping people out of a ditch, jump start, tire etc.

Hope I don't get left on the side of the road a some point.

I guess these days it might be better to just call 911 and report it?

This is where you and I will have to disagree. You see them as good kids and justify their taking advantage of the charity of others for their personal gain. I see them as con artists that if they would put as much effort into honestly dealing with people would have had plenty to get to Arkansas.

Lying or conning others for personal gain doesn't make them good kids in my book.

They had no place to live anymore in AZ, They needed to go to family in Arkansas,, They had NO money,,, when they were out of gas on the way, They held up a sign that said "out of gas please help",, and this is how they got there, They didn't "Scam" anybody,, just asked for help, and got it,,

I'm with Sarge & Crash on this. It's pan-handling, plain and simple.
I'm always willing to help people who show an effort in helping themselves. If they said that they'd wash my car or mow my lawn or actually do anything to earn some money, I'd take them up on it and tip them well. This wasn't the case.
I wouldn't expect anyone to do any more than I'm prepared to do if I were in their shoes.

Sorry JC, but based on very little info you offered about these "good" kids I am not sympathetic. I would need to know more if I were to feel I wasn't being bamboozled. I was a kid once but I wasn't raised to stupidly put myself in a situation where I'd be at the mercy of strangers. Worst case, I'd call home for help.

Lots of people around here help when ever they can, even go out of their way to jump in when needed..
But are a "get by on your own hook" kind of mind set, or they wouldn't be here on WSF.

I do not consider panhandling "On purpose" as a good thing even in an emergency.

No different than bugging out with no plan but going to land you do not own and taking what is not yours at every opprotunity. This is the plan of half the folk that call themselves self reliant survivalists. You "do what you have to do to survive", but not now and it's different if it's me and not them.

Guy with a "Will work for food" or "I am stranded" sign is a lowlife today but that is what you plan on doing as you go from farm to farm SHTF? I have heard that as the plan of some right here on these forums.



My wife's family had a story they told about the middle daughter. Three girls in the family, they were all drop dead georgous, and she was the "pretty one".

Seems when she turned 16 and started driving her old jalopy around it was constantly having flats. The girl seems to have had about a dozen flats in less than a year and had never changed one herself. She would barely be out of the car before some guy had stopped and offered to change it.

Story is that she went out to the driveway and found a flat on her buggy. My FIL stood in the driveway and made the boys that stopped and offered to change the tire stand in the yard and NOT HELP. She needed to know how to change the tire herself.

My wife said that by the time sister got the tire changed there were 4 guys parked in front of the the house trying to talk her dad into letting them help.

That way i know that their stories will be checked out, they can get "3 hots & a cot," as well. Also, many PD's have emergency funds to help the real cases.
You don't know any of what they said was true just as much as you don't know that " I am sure everyone that helped them out got it back somehow..." You want to believe that because it makes you feel good to do so. I have seen experts in free-loading back when I was on staff at a Rescue Mission. They're really good...at getting their needs met for free. Work or walk, that's my motto. & yes, they can earn legal money, even at truck stops. I know, I used to work at one. We always had some work that a needy person could do in exchange for a meal & a tank of gas. Begging is bad, in my book. I don't care how serious or innocent they look.

Well both sides have valid points. YES there are Con artists out there. Yes there are good people out there that couldn't get a job sweeping out the oil change bay at a truck stop too. You may all remember that I have been in that particular situation. Just look at my picture in "Gems from the Gutter", and ask yourself if you would let that person even rake your yard. Most wouldn't. I was lucky to get day labor jobs. You wouldn't believe the times I sat there HOPING to have someone need me to work...at anything. Oh and in that picture I was actually "Cleaned up" about as much as I could. I couldn't even get canned goods from a business I kept from being robbed. But some of the cops remembered me, and against their Department policy helped me some.(Small things like 550 cord, soap, socks.... stuff like that, but they could have lost their job for doing it) Some Police Departments are actually kind of brutal in their outlook on "Indigent people". The ONLY help they will give is the "3 hots and a cot" that Sarge mentioned. That would be in the "Cross Bar Hotel" too.

Yes I panhandled a few times.... couldn't get some of the stuff I needed any other way..... and I hated it. But I did it, because I had to. I Thank my Lucky stars that there were some good hearted people out there. Otherwise I might not have made it.

On the other hand there are the Con Artists out there too. Some of the things I heard actually were appalling to me.... Like the three that panhandled near a mall and made $500 in one day..... Just 3 days later they were broke.... and badly Hung-over. How in the world 3 people can drink away $500 in just a couple of days is beyond my comprehension.

I started making my way off the streets with less than that. Which I got the honest way.... finally someone actually hired me.... only took about a year and a half to get lucky. But I haven't been homeless again.... close a time or two, or so it seemed anyways.

In keeping with the thread, I'll say this..... I wouldn't be where I am today without some "Good guys" helping me along the way.... and some of them are you.:yes:

Good post, Poco. When we see someone our opinion is based pretty much on instinct. Unfortunately, the more attractive the person is the more we trust. I guess that's perpetuation of the best of the specie at work. There are also those subtle efferent cues we pick up. But the long and the short of it is how we look makes a difference in how people judge us. Since we can't know character in a first meeting we can only go off of what we see and sometimes that's woefully wrong in both directions. We often trust those we shouldn't and don't trust those we should.

Correct Sarge. Almost everywhere, there are public and private groups that give gas money and for other things. When I worked EM for a county, it was done all the time.

I've seen it ALL in the city. The first couple of years I gave left and right 'til I learned to see through it. I still give on the street but it's on a case by case basis. Generally can't resist old people, good musicians and people with pets who obviously look like they are loved and taken care of by the owner.

When I see a few mariachis enter the subway I always get my money out. Nothing brightens my day like their music, and that's worth something.

My personal favorite was some kid who rode up to me on a his bicycle, listening to an ipod, and asked me for 5 bucks. That or the guys sitting on a box that when I parked, yelled to me from 15 feet away, "yo, got a dollar?". I hate those people. I would give change to someone who opened the door for me. At least it shows some sort of initiative.
I work for my dad and we do residential construction. When we need extra hands for a job, we usually go down to the Hope House Ministries (a place for troubled kids) and see if any of them have been cleared to get out for a bit and earn some money. If someone like Pocomoon walked up to a job site and offered to clean it up for a few bucks, we'd oblige.
Unfortunately, all the selfishness in the world makes it difficult to help people. I know I can't afford to blindly hand out money, and I know better than to trust everyone, but how do you pick out those who really need it from those who don't?

Over the summer I helped a girl out who's car overheated. Steam was just pouring out of her engine bay. I pushed the car to the side of the road (as people drove past us). Gave her a lift to where she was going and gave her my mechanics number who was just down the road. Only one person asked if we needed any help that drove by. Unfortunately, he passed us just after I pushed the car to the side.

Justin - I never questioned whether or not these were good kids. I've never met the, so how would I know? What I did question was your statement that they had no other choice. Sure they did. I guess by your following remarks (which appeared to me to be rather condescending) that you felt they did have other choices - prostitution or robbery. Really? I guess I'm not wired that way because I would think that working their way to AR with honest work should have been higher on the list of choices.Then to say that unless somebody has been there they wouldn't understand and that YOU have helped people in need... Let me just say that those remarks are uninformed and down right insulting. I and many others have helped more people than you will ever know. It's not something we do to garner praise or accolades, but rather because it is something we feel is the right thing to do. I understand that is all you believe they could have done (hook, steal, or beg), and this is where I say I'm wired differently.... They could have done odd jobs along the way, cleaned vehicle windows while folks ate, pumped someboy's gas, picked up trash in the lot, and on, and on. As I have always said - we have choices, and how we choose will determine our path in life.

I can earn money anywhere, & without pity. Most truck stops have resturants & have dishes that need washed, trash carried out, etc.. In 2003 I was homeless, living in a tent all summer. In order to get the bus-driving job I've got now I had to go through 5 weeks of UNPAID training, then pay for my own CDL, $50 back then. I asked my sister for help & she paid me to help her husband replace roofing on their rental property...& I'm afraid of heights! But I did what had to be done. My sister now has new-found respect for me & I bought all new underwear! :yes: However, if I were stranded at a truck stop today, I would Busk! Remember, give a man a fish & you've fed him for a day. Justin, what was the situation that made this young couple have no choice? I understand that there are times and situations that people are just desperate but I think the problem others are having (only because it is the problem I have with your story) is that they left AZ with the sign "out of gas" already made up.

Back in HS the sister of a friend moved to NY with her boyfriend. After about a year together, he became abusive. She left in the middle of the night (while he was still asleep) with nothing because he didnt let her have access to money or anything else. The only way she made it home was because the help of strangers. Her situation was dire, in her mind at least, it was a life or death choice. I dont believe she asked for help, she was just desperate enough for others to recognize it and offer.

Justin, what was the situation that made this young couple have no choice? I understand that there are times and situations that people are just desperate but I think the problem others are having (only because it is the problem I have with your story) is that they left AZ with the sign "out of gas" already made up.

Back in HS the sister of a friend moved to NY with her boyfriend. After about a year together, he became abusive. She left in the middle of the night (while he was still asleep) with nothing because he didnt let her have access to money or anything else. The only way she made it home was because the help of strangers. Her situation was dire, in her mind at least, it was a life or death choice. I dont believe she asked for help, she was just desperate enough for others to recognize it and offer.

To be honest, I am not sure, I was told that they had to use the sign and ask for old french fries from macdonalds to get to where his mother lived, I know he had been layed off and they had to go because they were getting kicked out of the mobile home, But I am pretty sure they knew they couldn't make and would run out of gas.
