Organ Donors?

Had to go re-new my DL today, and noticed that the sticker on my old license had worn off.
Pleased to say that that the new one has a permanent stamp under the lamination.

So how many of y'all are organ donors?

(That's assuming there will be anything working left....if you know what I mean)

I am. Whole body for what it's worth. Any part of me they need they can have. I sure won't need it.

Me. All of my family knows of my wishes. The leftover are to be creamated and spread here in the wilderness of Alaska. Or if I make it to a ripe old age and live in my dream location of a cabin on the 40 Mile River, they can bury the ashes there.

Yep, I have a few parts that have little mileage on them and are still in working order. I think everyone should be a donor and while you're at it, make out a living will. It will save someone a maybe tough decision, been there recently on the last one.

That's an excellent point, OC. Living Will, Durable Power of Attorney and Medical Power of Attorney. Along with a Will, of course.

About 6 months after she died I got a notice from the hospital detailing the transplants they had made using her donations. They did not list the people but they did list the transplants. It is not just the heart, kidneys and such. They can use much more. It was quite amazing.

There had been 37 seperate transplants from her remains, including corneas, inner ear parts, 5 segments of her liver, bone grafts.

She had worked at a charity hospital for 30 years and no one was ever charged a penny for any of her donations. She would have liked that. I hope her gifts made somneone elses' life better.

If they don't use her parts good I'll kick their butts!

Good point, Rep for that! We were in this boat recenty as well.
This is just part of prepping, protecting your interests, property, and your beneficiaries intrests.

We had that done for about $300 in about one hour, was done and printed out to sign in another 1/2 hour.

yeah; anything that predisposes a person, even slightly to die when their organs are still in good condition is probably a good enough reason to sign up.

Yes I am an organ donor. My DH and I have our medical power of attorney and power of attorney for each other. Something you might want to check out is if you have a do not resusitate in your medical power of attorney you still need to go to your doctor and get the form that says you do not want to be resusitated or the emergency people are still obligated to perform CPR to try and resusitate you. I have mine hanging on the refrigerator as that is one pf the places they are told to look for it. I do not know if this is true in all state but it is in VA. So you might want to check on that also.

If you are terminally ill or resuscitating you would be only back to a state of technically alive, but not really living, you might want a DNR.

Sam - Some folks will not donate on religious grounds. It involves the belief of the second coming and the resurrection of the deceased. While I respect that belief, I don't happen to share it the way they do.

Well Batch I have a back that is totally deroritaed to the point that I cannot walk very far so I am in a wheelchair. The doctors cannot determine what all is wrong with me and I have a really crappy heart no not just hard hearted so that is why I have made that decision.

I have been an organ donor for years (more than I care to think about). The Louisiana drivers license has an organ donor mark on the license itself which is laminated so there is no danger of it coming off.

Absolutely! Even though much of my body is adversely affected by stuff I did in my misspent youth and later (can't donate blood - malaria), I'm sure there are many parts that can be used.

No, I'm not an organ donor. But I have thought about having my body donated for medical science.

Donating your body to science usually means it will be used in the cadaver lab at a medical school to be dissected by medical/dental/nursing students in their anatomy classes.

That is a worthy cause but not what most folks think about when they donate their body's to science. For the most part being an organ donor will save more lives.
