The Mosin was Right at Home Today.

My oldest and I went to the range today. We are getting snow flurries with a light dusting. It's 28°F and wind at 9 to 13mph with gusts. I swear that Mosin grinned when it saw the snow and felt the wind. Every shot we fired it said, "Da!" instead of bang.

We spent a couple of hours there and played with a few different flavors. All in all a good time despite the cool air.

They work best if you store them right next to the pork chops in the chest freezer!

The story is that the Russians lubed their guns with sunflower seed oil to keep them operational in the -70 cold. The Germans were supposedly not as efficient, but they got around it enough to kill 6 million Russians. Apparently they had a couple of Mausers working at the least.

I once had an old Browning A5 that I carried on a bad hunt down in TN. It was a real sleet-treat ice storm that crusted everything. I was coated with 1/2" of ice and the gun had even more.

As i was comming around the corner of the barn into the back field I jumped a big covy of quail. It sounded like I had stepped on an IED when those things went up and I reacted instinctively. The old shotgun came up and fired almost by itself.

After a couple of minutes the cloud of ice settled to the ground and my hunt buds were standing there wondering if I had blown myself up. That old long recoil action had shed itself of its ice coating, but the next round was in the chamber and it was ready to shoot again.

You guys are about 1/2 day ahead of us in the weather department. I went to the mailbox today and did not want to make that trip. I got 27 degrees and 30 mph winds with light fluries.

The story I heard was the reason the bolt handle is long and sticks straight out, was so it could be operated in -0 temps with mittens, LOL.

I really need to get me a Mosin Nagant! I have been wanting one for a while but the more I read how well everyone enjoys them and the price can't be beat. I guess I need to stop waiting for the local gun store to get one and just buy from Gunbroker or somewhere similar. A local gunstore has a Mosin Nagant Sniper with original scope but they are asking $600 which I thought was pretty steep.

My son and I had that very conversation today about the mitts. There is no way you could load a Mosin with mitts on. Heck, I have trouble loading one bare handed. I can't imagine trying to do it at -30 in the wind with jack boots headed your way across an open field. And that metal is mighty cold even at +30.

Randy - Yes. I'm using stripper clips. Once you get the mitts on, however, it's tough grabbing everything and not getting material stuck in there. I generally lift up on the front of the top round and push down on the back to load. Or at least hook my fingers under the front of the top round. That's about the easiest way for me.

Rebel - I did. I pulled the rear sight and added an LER scope. Had it set on the money last trip but it was off this time by quite a bit. I have to tear into it and find out why it didn't keep center. I didn't use locktite on any of the screws so I'm wondering if one backed off. To dang cold to tear it down at the range so we just played with it. I'm not going to locktite any of them either. If I can't get it to hold a good line then I'll just revert back or find another scope.

I do not think you can tear a MN up. They are going to work anyway.

I think they are the rifle version of a Colt SSA.

Anybody want to buy an Enfield? I need two more MNs for the vehicles and a spam can.

If I had it to do again I would take off the entire rear sight unit and mount the LER scope right to the top of the barrel using the factory rear sight grooves. Then I would do the trigger job and quit.

I accept Locktite or JB Weld as part of mounting any scoope, espically with a heavy recoil rifle like the MN. My Rossi 30-06 tries to launch any scope into orbit after three rounds. I once had a 5 pound .308 that would shear 6x48 mount screws off. That one once required stitches over the eyebrow. Wish I still had it.

Hunter - The scope is rock solid. I'm actually pretty please with it. Wednesday was just too darn cold to clean weapons and I don't do it in the kitchen. (My momma didn't raise no dummies.) So I cleaned them in the garage today and checked over the scope and mount. I can't see anything wrong with it. I can line the bore up with something and the scope is right on it so I have no idea why we were so far off out at the range. Just one more reason to go back I guess.

I know it looks ungainly but then so does the whole weapon. It's pretty solid, however. The mount is held in place by two side screws and two top screws so it isn't going anywhere.

I am convinced, however, that the Russians loaded the barrel down with powder residue before shipping it over here. It's not possible to get the barrel clean. I worked on it for 40 minutes and I think it was still as dirty after 40 minutes as it was when I started. Anyone have the be all end all of bore cleaning goop? I'm thinking about dipping it in some of RWCs bark elixir and see if that will strip some of it out. I've been using Hoppe's #9 on it but I need something a bit strong like sulfuric acid.

Rick, you might try CLP Break Free. That stuff will clean saltwater off of metal and it works well for me when I shoot cheap ammo. I can clean a rifle with Hoppes and go back and get more after with the CLP.

I see on a list I watch that someone has one on consignment nearby for $100. No pic.
Wondering if I should go look at it. The dealer has very good rep with all the guys at the ranges where I been hanging out. I was actually thinking about going anyway to see what a $2500 Krag 1899 carbine looks like (always wanted an old Springfield bolt action, don't ask me why, but not for that price!)

I didn't grow up with firearms so still learning a lot. I'm not a reloader–yet–so might not be a good idea–yet. But sure been bitten.

Rick, I've been using ammonia as a first wash, with a bass brush, then Hoppe's #9.
Seems to be working, I do get down to clean patches.

I'm told that the ammonia breaks up the corrosive residue, historically the troops were supposed to have urinated down their barrel? True, don't know, maybe just a legend.

Maybe that's why the bore still looks dark even after the clean patches are pushed thru.

I think I would be tempted to plug the bore with a pine dowel, set her up on end and pour the barrel full of kerosene and let her sit awhile.
