reloading question

ive just got into shotgun reloading. ive scene multi shot defense loads like a ball and several pieces of buckshot but would it be any use to load a single shell with multiple types of birdshot like #4 and #8 for example

Yes, sounds like a turkey load. With some guns you can get a better pattern with a mixed shot load. Experiment and see what works with your gun.

Mixed loads follow Murphy's law. Whatever you have will be the wrong combination! Of this I am certain.

Mixed loads are very useful in the field. I have forgotten what the normal turkey load is, #4 and BB?

In my area the pot luck hunting does not follow the rules. Rabbits and squirrel are supposed to need #5=6, while birds ask for #8. When I walk out the door I never know what my foraging will turn up. I really see more deer and turkey than small game. 1/2 oz of #8 and 1/2 oz of #5 shounds real good to me.

Then there is the old guy down the road that dropped a 150 pound buck with a load of #6.

Remington make a "Duplex Turkey Load", 4's X 6's that I use all the time, used to make a 2's X 4's if my memory serves me, but haven't seen the 2X4 lately, 4X6's hard to find, but still out there.

As far as mixing any other shot, I wouldn't bother, won't make much difference, and just patterns weird, tried it.
Seems that the factories really work at making better patterning loads, with a whole lot more resources than I have.

Protection, 00 buck, IMHO.....or what ever you have in your pocket.

Hunter do you remember back when we were kids and there were no plastic sleeves or cushion shot cups.

Every shot was a pattern challenge. Those wad stacks might leave a 12" donut hole right in the middle of your group or all the shot would spin to one side and look like a comet with a tail.

We used to make spreader rounds with cardboard X seperators and try to pull evey trick in the book to close up a full pattern. We would put cornmeal in the shot to cushion it from smearing against the barrel. I have even wrapped shot columns in newspaper to close up a group.

Now people get mad if every round is not picture perfect and evenly spread. Full choke is expected to be absolutely dead on 70%@25 yards and OO buck is supposed to fill up the room at 3 feet from the muzzle!

I can't see how anybody got anything killed berfore 1970 or thereabouts!

KS, yes I do, as I was under the "2 shell rule", you got 2 shells, and you better come home with something, and you got 2 more....I was always trying to stretch my ammo supply.
Funny how that mentality still effects me to day, I find it hard to "shoot up ammo", just for the sake of hearing the boom, feel the recoil, smell the burnt powder, check target.....pick up dead whatever, unless it's really important.

Tied a lot of different methods, newspaper wrapped shot "bundles" heavy on the bottom to "pack", coin tubes, wads made out of baseball cards, cardboard boxes, felt "cushion wads", etc, primers swiped from a buddy's dad that shot trap, powder as well.

Never tried the Billy the Kid, 12 ga DB loaded with stacks of dimes, that he used on "Bob" during his escape (true?, don't know).

What kind?, how much?, pressures, loads? Real teenagers don't need to know this stuff, until something happens, then try to find out "What happened?"
Surprised I/we never blew up a shot gun/gun.

My point is that unless you do not have anything else, factory loads are better than ever, consistent, not real expensive, (unless you spend a lot of time shooting stop signs), and when you do get a shot, no matter what it is, ducks, deer, rabbits, zombies....I want the best load available so as to make the shot, no matter what the cost.

As far as the "Buck and ball loads", haven't tried any, don't know if I will, or for what reason.
Not legal for hunting around here.
