The city of Cinncinatti gave two awards for valor today.

The awards were given to two first responders for finding an auto accident victims medic alert necklace allowing them to treat him with efficiency.


This is what happens to a society that puts pictures of hamburgers on the cash register buttons.

So...I guess I don't get your point. The first responders are dumb for finding the bracelet that was purchased for just that reason or the city is dumb for recognizing someone actually helping?

I guess I'm kind of confused...

Yup, we are now giving awards to people doing what they're paid to do--their job. If you just show up for work, you're a hero.
Of course now, we'll have to come up with a new name and award for people who go above and beyond their job.

So in cincinatti, I'm guessing there was no burning buildings or autos that someone needed rescued from, or an arrest that was compressed all the way to the er . So they gave it to two people that read a life alert ID huh go figure

This topic is near and dear to my heart so I'll just take a crack at responding.
That someone isn't a good samaritan it's someone who's job is to help. That's all they do.

Step two, stop the bleeding
Step three.....

We now expect so little from people we pay to do a job that we give them awards for doing what they should have done to start with, as if it were a tremendous accomplishment for a first responder to accomplish the barest minimum requirement of their profession.

I, for one, just lost a great deal of confidence in the person that arrives in the big red truck to take care of my loved ones. He now qualifies as exceptional in his field if he can get to the door without tripping on his shoe laces.

And no, they are not "Good Samaritins", they are well paid for their choice of occupation.

What I said was...if these helpers happened to have been good samaritans--just people off the street and not paid professionals, I'd understand the medal.
But this is ridiculous and so pervasive, people take it for granted and clap along.

I see your point...(you too B)...I guess I've never thought of it like that. While it's their job, and they are getting paid to do it...there are less and less people willing to DO the job. I guess I see it more as a way to convince more people of the importance of the position. I see first responders (for the most part, because there are some douches), as the only people willing to show up or help in an emergency. Out here, I can be on the ground dying, and no one will take the time to dial 9/11. :confused: While I understand that they are "just doing their jobs" and shouldn't be looked at as any better as any other profession...they chose THAT job over others. I suppose I see that as commendable...

But...that's just me. ;)

I think we have two very different topics going on here.
One is that a policeman and a fireman saved a life today. This is a regular occurrence. It happens everywhere, every day. Should they be awarded for standing in front of a bullet or running into a burning building? Absolutely! Is that what they want? I don’t think so. I think first responders, for the most part, are not glory hounds. If they were, they would have been politicians. I’m sure the two first responders can see what a PR circus this has become, but they must go along with it because it only helps to strengthen the bond between the departments and the communities they serve. As for the Medic Alert company, they are using this story to promote their product, just like any company in a free market would do.
The other is dumbing down of America. The first time I noticed this was 25 years ago at a rest stop in Connecticut when the young man behind the counter, looking at his blank register screen, said I should “just reach over and take what I think is the right amount of change” from the drawer. All I bought was a small soda and handed him a 5 dollar bill. If you look around you can find hundreds of stories that follow this same example. Our leaders continuously lower the educational standards just so they can boast about the effectiveness of their programs. Can’t make the grade? No problem, we will just change the way we calculate the scores and everyone will pass. You know, like when the government doesn’t factor in food and fuel when they calculate the cost of living…that’s why there is no cost of living increase in the SS checks next year for the elderly. If you want to see the dumbing down of America, look no further than Massachusetts, where we have re-elected the governor (and his 60+ personal assistants because he can’t even dress himself) who recently raised our sales tax along with every fee and fine known to man, and now wants to offer free in-state tuition to any “undocumented resident” (ILLEGAL ALIEN) in the country. Apparently, 48% of Massachusetts residents don’t know how to tie their shoe laces.

Sorry, but I couldn't disagree more. When a country produces some of the finest military equipment, medical equipment, medical breakthroughs, aircraft, industrial breakthroughs, beams back live images from Mars for months on end or from the deepest crevices of the solar system, etc. etc. I don't think I'd call it dumbing down.

I also think you can pull any instance you choose and match it up with a similar instance of equal stupidity from any generation. Someone not being able to make change speaks to the person not a whole generation.

You know Rick, being in the R&D sector of this country, there are a lot of Indians and Chinese in the companies that come up with the breakthroughs. Our country is importing a lot of engineers because there aren't enough here. And, we all know engineering is the most important job in the world. A large majority of engineering and science grad students in the US aren't US citizens.

I can't disagree with that at all. Well, except the importance of engineering. If you think that highly of engineers then call an engineer the next time your toilet backs up (snicker, snort). A lot of them are U.S. citizens. I'm pretty sure all the U.S. astronauts are...well...U.S.

The majority of the men sitting in mission control for the first moon landing got their first 8 years education in a one room school too. And they put those guys up there using slide rules, paper and pencils.

Catch the blank stare the next time you walk into a convinience store and ask the cleark what 7x8 equils. Or better yet, stand outside a high school algebra class and ask the same question and watch them grab at their calculators. Been there and done it!

Local university has several majors available with no math or history requirements.

They do require 15 semester hours of Diversity Awareness and Sensitivity Training for graduation.
