shop safety reminder

Like many people, I usually practice proper safety protocols when using power tools, but some times I catch myself skimping when I get on a roll. Other times, it's the tool or the workpiece that catches me, with a more poignant reminder.

I was brushing some scale off of a knife blade with a wire wheel in my friend's shop the other day. I was wearing eye protection. I was wearing close fitting long sleeves. What I wasn't wearing where gloves.

My left ring finger caught on the edge of the wheel just right (read: wrong) and got sucked down between the wheel and the tool rest and I lost a pretty healthy (read: unhealthy) depth of skin on the finger tip.

In addition to skipping the gloves, the accident was caused by distraction. I had looked over my shoulder while the workpiece and my hand was still on the tool rest and the wheel still in motion. Not only did this mean i wasn't paying attention to a power tool while it was running, with a pointy, sharp potential projectle within it's reach, but the slight movement of my shoulder and arm as I turned was all it took to unknowingly stick the finger in there.

i'm just glad it wasn't my whole finger. if that had been the stone, it would have crushed and juiced it for me. if it had grabbed the knife blade instead (i was being a little more carefull then that), it could have skewered me.

Live and learn is a great message, but I hate it when I have to learn lessons they hard way more than once.

My dad had a stone wheel explode once,, a piece stuck in his stomach,, luckily, not too deep,, I guess it was spinning too fast or something, don't know, I am glad you didnt get hurt too bad :)

i'll have to wait till it heals up better, but the sensation in the fingertip is sortof muted. it might just be because of the scab but if felt that way since the initial shock wore off.

i couldn't even feel it when i cleaned and disinfected it.

Glad it wasn't more serious. This may sound silly, but hold it higher than your heart. If you hold it lower, it will throb like a dickens.

it throbs a bit, but i can't feel it much.

i left a bandaid on for about 24 hours though, so it started to smell nasty. cleaned it again and am leaving it dry. funky smell is gone (clamy hands smell, like when you've been handling a lot of change on a hot day)

Don't you just hate it when a tool is smarter than you? And wasn't there an instant in time when you thought, "Dang (or some similar exclamation)! This is gonna hurt." Just before the pain actually hit. That's a precious moment we should all savor.

yeah; that happens a lot: i fail the 10% rule constantly.

this time, i just had time to jerk my hand out of the way as i was realizing what happened. if it had taken any longer than that you might all be calling me stumpy :D

For those who aren't familiar; the 10% rule states that you must be at least 10% more intelligent than the object you are trying to manipulate to profit. doors are the usual culprit; as when i try to open them while walking through them, rather than before.

It always seems when we get comfortable, we let our guard down. My grandad set a running skillsaw down in his lap once. In a hurry. Distracted. Heck, he knew what he was doing, did it all the time...
He almost bled to death before he got to the hospital.

I can relate on the numbness. A few months back I was sanding a dry wall repair along side a window and caught my thumb on a curtain hanger. Ripped a nice gouge about 1/4" deep and and 1/2" long right along my thumb nail. (Or three stiches worth) Thing bled like a faucet. When I opened it up to stick a alcohol pad in it, I felt nothing ,nothing at all!

Oh, and remember when using a angle grinder the sparks a hot! Stand to the side of the shower. Caught my apron on fire last week! LOL

I used to run a CNC router table that I swear was out to kill me. The guys used to laugh at the modified timber cutting helmet I had (ear protection, hardhat, face shield). I'd added a polycarb face piece that came down below my chin. And I always wore a welding apron. A good leather one. On more than one occasion I'd considered adding a cup...

That machine gave me several gray hairs but never really hurt me more than a hefty static shock or two even though I'd had bits explode and metalwork fly. Thank goodness those old machines had heavy rails to catch that ****.

It's easy enough to do. I was trimming the last limb on a small tree I had dropped when I let the saw kick. Stupid move. Just touched the chain to the limb. The very last cut I had to make. Ever kiss a chain saw while it's running? My advice is don't.

Did you do that Rick? I met a guy once who caught a chainsaw blade in the kisser. Not a pretty site even after they fixed his teeth and chin.
