FYI In-line muzzle loader shooters.

That time of year again, so in my prepping for the 'Hunt", getting gear together, checking out the necessary tools, I decided to drag out the .50 cal muzzle loader barrel for the H&R Handi Rifle.

Haven't shot it in a while, and when it was put away, was cleaned very well.
So much to my surprise I found that the breach had "gunk" in the primer hole.

If you are going to be shooting an in-line, pull the breach plug, NOW, to make sure that any oil/solvent/dust/dirt is out.
Much easier to do it in a vice, rather than on the tailgate, can be really "tight".

I came across a guy last year that had the pyrodex pills get so oily, that it wouldn't fire, until we pulled his breach plug out in the field, pushed out all the soggy powder, cleaned and re-loaded.

He was of the "store well oiled" school of thought, not good for muzzle-loaders, if stored up-right in the safe/case.
Oil runs down and fowls the touch hole.

Also a good time to check the Modern possibles/shooting bag.

Our ML season is a scatterbrained deal. One weekend in Oct, another in Nov, three hours on the first Saturday after the seventh new moon every third year type thing.

One of mine has been loaded and waiting by the back door since Oct, just in case. I have beeswax on the nipple and a baloon over the muzzle. It is about as waterproof as a ml gets.

I bought an old used in-line to experiment with this year. I found little experimenting to do. It is the most accurate bp gun I own. I have a couple of sidelocks with hi-dollar barrels on them that cost 4x as much as that CVA inline, not the whole gun just the barrels, and the Encore will outshoot them.

Our regular deer season runs from this Saturday to a week from Sunday.
Then Monday muzzle-loader starts.

I would normally use my traditional TC Hawken, but this time I will be staying a couple of days past regular season to be at "The Place" as i have a metal building coming in that week.
Sooooooo, just to keep myself busy, I'm bringing the barrel for the Handi Rifle, just switch barrels for the ML season, from the .270.

I was just surprised it had that much gunk in the breach?

One tip I was taught is before you load a round, fire a few primers through the gun first. This will dry out the barrel and lessen the chances of a misfire because of oil buildup. It seems to work.

Thats a good tip, Guys....... and I do do this everytime I load up.

As most of my ml are traditional, the nipple is off to the side, and doesn't seem to collect the gunk as much.
The in-line is straight down....so maybe collects more?

Well all I have to say to that, is that DW birthday was a little early this year, so I won't miss it.......usually on opening day, so it usually , "Happy Birthday dear"....(over the phone) "see ya in a week or so...."

Good tip. The breech plug on my CVA Accura comes out easy. I put anti-seize on the threads and remove it to clean the barrel, which I then wipe with one lightly oiled patch followed by two dry ones.

I don't swab between shots unless I remove the breech plug and swab outward, otherwise it shoves all that crud right down to the nipple and throws off the mark on my ramrod for a full load, which I don't like because that's how I tell if everything is seated properly.

I took a doe yesterday with it and usually do some pre-season squirrel hunting to get used to the hair trigger it has.
