Chimneys left Standing?

Over the years I have noticed many chimneys left standing in all types of locations. Some are very old, from a farm house most likely, where the building may have just rotted away and the woods grew up around it. Others are not so old and the building was removed but the chimney was left. I've seen commercial and residential chimneys. I've seen them here in the States as well as overseas. There is just to many to say there's not a reason for it, but I've asked around and have yet found out why.

Have any of you seen these chimneys and do you know why they are left standing for so many years?:confused:

Chimneys are made out of stone, brick and mortar. Buildings are often made out of wood. Stone and brick lasts much longer than wood, hence, the chimneys exist long after the building rots, blows or burns away.

some of them that are in good condition are converted into backyard grills,my mother-out-law bought an old boy scout camp ground,the building had been torn down,leaving the chimney/fireplace intact,after and inspection,it was deemed suitable for use,and they converted it to a grill,until my sol's boyfriend trhough a rope into the chimney,tied it off and hooked it to his truck and pulled it down,was a really nice grill to.

PGV - Often wood is reclaimed from an abandoned homestead for use in a tool shed or barn. Since there is no practical value in tearing the chimney down, it's left standing. My great great grandfather built a log cabin and raised his family in it. Years later, the beams and logs were recovered and used in a new barn leaving the chimney still standing. The beams were solid and already hewed so it was a lot easier than cutting down trees and starting from scratch.

Many old chimneys used wood above the fire pit area. Chimneys are pretty neat if you think of them. Your stack needs to be larger than the throat, and most just do not go straight up. There are all kinds of pockets built in some to catch debris.

They are put together, some with stone and mud, which after continuous heating turns to a hard clay, like that of clay pots.

The two most diff. parts of blg. a chimney, first it's the foundation, second is the throat. Maybe they are left standing, because they can stand on their own. There are a few cases where the chimneys just fell right off the side of the house, leaving a big ol hole. Some had so many crevises and cracks in them, that the smoke just poured out of the whole stack.

Maybe they are left because they are a sign of times past. Stack construction has not changed all that much if you think of it.

The stone ( in some cases) is not stronger than the wood that was built around it. There is this old farmyard that my neibor uses for the grain bins, and the bricks of the chimney are so decomposed that you can't pick them up, they just crumble.the cement in between is even worse.

I've only seen maybe a dozen or so of these chimneys and one set of commercial smoke stacks. The smoke stacks were in North Carolina and trees had grown completely around them. I've asked many people and a Mason about these chimneys, and the main answer has been that it is easier to leave them than to take them down. I would believe today there are laws about leaving them standing.

I came across, deep into the woods in France, a old home made with stone walls and apparently a wooden roof. The house was no bigger than 20x30 ft with a chimney on one end and a well house on the other end. A tree, four foot in diameter, grew straight up the middle of the house. There was no sign of the roof so we believe it may have burned. The well house on the other hand still was mostly in tact. The well was providing plenty of cold water and you could see how the used it to store food.

Maybe it's a just fact that it was easier to leave them standing.

You need to remember, too, that only in the last 30 or 40 years have explosives been "perfect" enough to drop buildings where we want to. Explosive demolition of smoke stacks generally incorporated some dynamite that blew out the base and it just laid over. Where buildings are in close proximity that isn't possible. The other thing to consider is many had piping coated with asbestos leading to them and leaving them stand meant not disturbing any of the asbestos.

Well what ever the reason old chimneys were left behind, they're always interesting to find in the middle of nowhere. It seems when you come across one it's like stepping back in time.:)

You bet. Old farm houses are the same way for me. The old farmers used to keep diaries of weather and temp and I've found one or two snooping around. They are very interesting. I even found a school roster in an abandoned school house once upon a time. It was kept during a small pox outbreak and there were a lot of names listed as deceased. That book is on loan to the county historical society. You can almost hear the voices in some of the places.

Oh Yes, Ive been all around the world as well as the United States, to touch a bit of history deep into the wilderness is something very special. When I was in Europe, to come across something many hundreds of years old was amazing. I'm not a wealthy man, I was very fortunate to deploy around the world while in the Marines. Our ships would make many liberty calls and I would take advantage of these opportunities.

I like hearing about things and places people find off the beaten path.

I'm fascinated by anything underground. Tunnels, living, bunkers, etc. Seattle has a whole section of town underground. There are scads of them around the world.

I have heard that there is quite a bit of underground tunnels and such under New Orleans,wonder if thats true,and if so what happened with them after Katrina,seems like the flooding around there would make the ground above them highly unstable.

Here, where I live, there is a section of the old slave underground railroad. These tunnels run off and on for miles to Lake Erie where the slaves would catch boats across to Canada. These are only foot tunnels of course some very small but other quite large. Many sections have collapsed over the years, some were destroyed so that roads could be built over them.

It was beautiful when they bought it,now not so much:mad: The chimney was back in the woods (which they logged out) and it had a concrete pad in front of it which I am guessing was part of the floor,the pad wasnt very large though so maybe part of the lodge had a dirt floor,not sure about that.

They actually plant the charges in an order to create a vacuum big enough and quicly enough that the structure collapses into the vacuum created instead of blowing bits of building all over the place. That's the building "implosions" that they love showing on the local news channels. Great when it works right, mess when it doesn't.

I know, I keep going around offering to blow things up for people, but they always decline, maybe because the buildings aren't actually scheduled for demolition...hmmm....
