Guess I will just have to get rid of my 30-30 and my 30-06. They just don't cut it anymore. Just traded for a 45/70 to, guess I will just have to throw it away. I will have to hunt quite a bit for a .308 around here though. Outside of the tacticool crowd (and the shops that cater to them) .308 anything is very hard to find. If I want one for the store in town, I would have to order one. Heck, If I wanted an auto anything, I would have to special order one. Guess the folks around here need an education on what they should really be using. What book are you getting this from? Maybe I should pass it around at the next grange or VFW meeting so I can show them what they are doing wrong. :yawn:

Oh, as for 45/70 being more expensive. I can cast and load it much cheaper than I can buy surplus .308. 15¢ a round for .45/70 vs. 50¢ a round for the cheapest .308 surplus that I can find around here.
And I do shoot my 45/70 much more than I do any of my .308s. It is much more fun.

Also, the Remington .308 auto that I do own would NOT be my first choice at stopping anything. I just can't get the darn thing to run right with surplus rounds. They are much to underpowered to operate the gas system. Using commercial .308 rounds works much better though, they are loaded quite a bit hotter than most surplus.

none, same as everyone else. :-) More people die of insect stings than even get ATTACKED by bears. You'd be lying if you claimed any such experience, and you're for sure wrong if you try to claim that my reasoning is incorrect. No, you can keep on wasting money on inferior performance on those guns. Nobody has to do the intelligent thing, obviously.

You are in over your head here.

On this board you are dealing with folk that live in the Alaskan bush, the western mountains, the southwestern desert, the southern swamps, the Appalatian Mountains and the velts of South Africa. We dodge turkey, deer, bear and elephants daily and carry pistols on our way to the outhouse. Some folk here have killed every bite they have eaten for 25 years, and grown every vegetable they cooked.

We often compare experiences, have different attitudes and list our preferences. We even joke about it often. But I am not going to tell someone that has killed a hunderd bear and lost count of the deer, elk, moose he has put down what he should and should not use.

If you want to go hunting in Alaska Sourdough can put you on your first bear. He does that as a part time job. He will even tell you what rifle to bring, if you ask.

Now my best advice is to get off the computer before the teacher finds out you are not paying attention in class.

So, in another thread you said, "Deer are big animals, shots beyond 300m are inhumane".....what happened to your conscious? Your now talking about snaring moose and letting a bear bleed out for a day! Making an animal die a slow prolonged death is about as inhumane as you can get...

For me, bear spray is the best bear deterrent...this way the bear still gets to live another day, and it learned a valuable lesson....

I know its really old- mid 1800's, and often called the 45-70 Gov and is fairly versitle in the sense that its big enough to take down a Grizzly, but yet of low enough velocity to use on small game...if I remeber correctly its fairly limited to closer range hunting? anyone with experiece with these rifles? just curious why he even brought this up.....

Yes I shoot it. I don't have extensive experience with it. Have a few "pet" loads and such. I can't really say it is limited to short range though. It is NOT a flat shooting round. Has the trajectory of a rainbow (relative to some modern rounds) but was a very flat shooting round for when it was introduced. If you know the drop/holdover for the ranges you are shooting, it can be used a very long range.

I have not hunted with it, but I used to own a Ruger Model 1 45/70. A friend loaded the rounds for me. I don't remember the exact numbers, but a 500 grain jacketed hollow point has quite a bit of drop at any distance. I don't think I would have used a round that size for small game.

Now, I might be wrong here...but the one friend I had that really spoke about his 45/70 much, carried it for "bear defense" (not bear hunting) and it was a fairly short rifle- with no scope....he also told me, that there were loads for it that were like shotgun loads and it could be used for small game? I don't know maybe I am confusing this with something else....

There probably are. When I traded for mine I think a 305 grain bullet was standard fare. In a casing as large as that I would think pellets could be loaded easily. The Ruger Model 1 was a single shot with a fairly short barrel. I would imagine that the barrel rifling would cause any shot loads to produce a donut pattern.

You can load a kind of .410 sized shot load for it (NOT USING .410 SHELLS though). It is not really that efficient due to the aforementioned donut pattern. You can download the round quite a bit though. Still a fairly large bullet even downloaded. I have rounds that I have used for deer and rounds that I have used for bear and elk. For me though, I really liked hunting hogs with the .45/70. 2400 powder behind a 350 grain Hornady RNFP half jacket bullet works wonder on them. The load is pleasant to shoot also. (Not like some of the loads I have done. They will wake you up).

So, getting back to the OP and the premise that semi-autos are faster....Its my opinion (and I would love to hear others thoughts on this) that both lever guns and pump actions are faster with a second shot when you take accuracy into consideration. The "theory" behind this is that the motions of opening and closing the action to reload the chamber also lines the shot up for an experienced shooter where a semi-auto leaved you searching for the target. I know that I personally have never noticed a faster second shot with a semiauto except maybe with a .22 where there is no recoil.

I really like the .308 round and have stopped many deer with it (with a pump Remington) but I'll never forget the deer I got with my NEF 45-70...it dropped like a house fell on it! I like the 45-70 but not enough to make it a first choice.
