old cell phones

I’m not sure if this has been presented before but after reading about JC’s recent illness, I thought it was worth mentioning (or re-mentioning).
I never discard old cell phones. Although they are not connected to the network, they are always connected to emergency services. I have them placed all over the house. I even have one taped inside the mailbox. With the power off, they will last a couple of months between charges. I also have a house key hidden out in the yard and have recently been thinking of burying a short piece of PVC pipe in the yard with some supplies in case we need to evacuate or can’t get in. I’m not talking long term survival, just something to get us through a single event. Have any of you done this and if so, what do you have in the cache?
Some of the items I would put in are:
House keys
Car keys
Couple of flashlights (crank type)
Ponchos
Whistles
Some money
Multi tool
FAK
Shoulder strap

It would be located somewhere on our escape route, buried just under the surface....
What do y'all think? waste of time or worthwhile investment?

Several on here have caches and you can probably find a number of posts. On the cell phone issue, it's a great idea. By law, cell phones must be able to reach 911, as you said, even if there is no other service. And if you have too many consider donating any excess to a women's shelter.

There is a shelter in the next town for battered women and children. We take up a collection from friends and family every six month and I take it to them personally. Every trip is usually consists of 2-3 contractor bags full of clothes.

Good for you on the collection stuff! I have a small backpack in the shed with a few bits and pieces. Nothing grand, some dried pasta meals, bar of chocolate, energy bars, a camp cooker, small first aid kit, waterproof packaway jacket, a couple of Space blankets. An emergency shelter, cooking pot, water, hot drink stuff, spare underwear and socks, some money and a spare housekey, a Folding knife, tin mug and one or two other bits I forget at the moment. I have this as I don't have a car, so no GHB or somewhere to shelter if needed.

Just remember to keep them charged up! And only 911 will work. E911 will not.
