Thinkin' time

It's hunting season most everywhere, which means a lot of us will be spending time up a tree, or in a blind, sitting quietly with our thoughts and rifles or bows, and that gives us a lot of time to think.

Ever have an epiphany 30 feet up a tree?
Ever seen some magical event that nobody would believe if you told them?
Do you sit and appreciate the beauty of the world around you and enjoy NOT interacting with it and only observing?

Saturday, I got up a tree I picked in the dark, in a new area of the WMA that we have not previously hunted. Normally there is a pond to the north of this area that is about 4' deep, but the drought has left it a dry mud patch full of dead lillies and cattails.
At around 9:15 a small doe walked out from behind some thick underbrush along the bank of that pond, in perfect view, broadside for a perfect shot. I shoot with both eyes open and in this case it was a good thing. As the doe mosied out, I noticed some more movement in the brush. Thinking there might be a bigger one about to come out, I waited.
As focus shifted from right eye (in the scope) to left eye, I noticed the deer in the brush hopping and playing and as it came out, I saw the beautiful yearling pouncing out, playing with sticks and flowers and just enjoying it's free life.
I lowered my gun and let them walk. They never knew I was there.
The baby bounced up to mama, playfully, and she licked it on the head and nudged it with her nose. They trotted right across that dried up pond to a little mudpuddle, took a drink, played some more, and finally mosied out of sight.
So that got me to thinking about what it means to be truly free. What does it mean? What is it like? Is such freedom your reward for being constantly on high alert? Is living in fear really freedom? Rhetoric. No need for answers. Just a few thoughts.

Anyhow, I also thought about "juju". You might call it karma, or luck, or blessings, or... But somehow in my heart, I felt that I would be rewarded for letting them live and not disturbing their habitat. If I were starving and had to take one, I just as well to have taken them both, as the yearling would surely succumb to the other wilds. To kill the mama was to kill the baby too. Since I'm not starving, it was a no-brainer. They both get to live another day.
I said a little prayer thanking the Good Lord for allowing me to observe such a beautiful spectacle, and I asked him to protect that little family and the land where they live.
That is good juju. Sunday, after getting home, I got a call to check a job. Monday, I measured it and put in a bid. The lady wanted a "special order color" but when she called back, she had picked out a "stock color" and was ready to start immediately.
Does it all tie together? Who knows? Our feeble minds cannot comprehend such matters of the universe. As savings from summer jobs dwindles to almost nothing, this job came at just the right time. Is this my reward and blessing? I don't know.
I do know, that when we do good things for the world around us, it always seems to come back better for us.

Do good in the world. Go in peace, and tread lightly on the earth.

just some random thoughts.
Anybody else have these moments? I would take a notebook to write down my thoughts, but I might miss something.. like the osprey flying over with a fish, or the eagles, or the fox squirrels who wake each other up just after daylight. Or the foxes chasing butterflies. Or the flowers that peek up at me as a beam of sunlight lands in just the right spot. Yep, living in the moment is better that dwelling on the past or worrying about the future.

Oh I absolutely believe you are right YCC. And I have been witness to some wonderful spectacles over the years, th not so spectacular pleases me too.
I still have a little smile on my face every time I pick up a fresh egg out of the hen coop, and I marvel at the tenacity of a broody hen to sit tight and hatch a brood.
Then there's those moments that just leave you breathless or breathing less. I have Red Kites and Buzzards(a new addition) nesting around me and watching them catching thermals and rising till just tiny dots in the sky well it just makes me happy. When the wind gets up and they really give a flying display just because they can I feel they do it just for me.
Then the funny moments, a large female Sparrowhawk dive bombed the bird table last year and made a real mess of the whole affair! She came in too low, hit the deck and rolled uncle over auntie into the hedge. Feathers severely ruffled, she bade a hasty retreat with nothing more damaged than her dignity. However, I'm sure I heard the little birds she was after laughing as she flew away with her ego in tatters.

I'm with you. Good deeds done are repaid in some way it seems. If not then repaid through clear conscience I guess. I believe in Karma, though. I don't live life in fear of something happening. I plan for it but I don't fear it. I can't control major events like tornadoes so no need to fear them.

YCC, great story! I totally agree, both good and bad comes back. Karma, juju,what ever you want to call it. In the least, like Rick said, it can come back in your conscience or a great memory. I'm glad we have the ability to think beyond the NOW and consider the later when we make choices. I wish everyone had that forward thinking in life and the conscience to remind them to think forward next time.

Since I've started interacting more with nature learning plants, trying out new gear, and different methods of firestarting and such I've developed a greater appreciation for the times when I'm simply just sitting there watching and listening.

I enjoy the act of simply enjoying nature now more than ever.

I had the biggest most dominant buck of my lifetime walk right up under the tree I was in, make a scrape, stand there for 5 minutes or so and slowly turn and walk away. He was so close I could have almost reached out and stuck him with my arrow. I was thinking, "man that is one big buck, look at the size of his neck, I wonder if I could jump on his back and stick him, look how thick those antlers are and the way he licks that branch and sniffs around to see who else has visited, I wonder if he smells my pee, etc. etc." I was thinking everything but draw and shoot. Actually I had already drawn, but never thought to shoot. I was too busy enjoying the moment and wondering how a buck like that could survive all these years just to walk up 10' below and just stand there like that. He was so cautious coming in, take one step, check the wind, take another and check again. I was mesmorised. I had forgot I even drew my bow until he turned and wlaked away.

That was likely the best hunting I ever did. Just being that close and being able to observe him like that. Sometimes I get caught up in the nature and forget I'm even hunting.

That's what I was talkin about. Like Winnie and RWC said.. It's all about that moment, and sometimes you get a life lesson, or at least a good belly-laugh out of it. Like time-out-of-time.. sometimes you can sit and think for hours, sometimes an hours worth of thoughts run through your head in a split second.
That's what I call "thinkin time".
Taking ourselves out of the equation is sometimes the best way to see something most folks never get a chance to see. Sometimes it's a reflex, like raising your gun or drawing your bow, and somehow you get sidetracked by the sheer beauty of the moment, lost in your own thoughts, and you forget the real reason why you're there.

I'd like to know Mrs. Winnie's thoughts on the clumsy bird with the hurt pride. My thoughts: Sometimes you go for it, or you go home; Pass or fail you gotta go for it.

And I'm certain AS and SD have some stories and thoughts they could share with us too. *hint hint*

Well, YCC that Sparrowhawk still has a go at the birdtable from time to time, so her pride didn't take much of a dent. When she gets it right though, you only see a poof of feathers as she hits her prey and she's gone. My garden is obviously in her territory. Sometimes she's lucky, often her hunting skills get her a meal, most often she leaves empty handed so I guess I'd say a skillset gets you far, luck helps from time to time, but expect disappiontment too.

I have sat in tree stands for hours and just watched spiders work on their web or piliated woodpeckers forage and feed their hatchlings. I try mot to have to much of an agenda in the woods. I call my hunting hiking with a bow, smoke pole, rifle or shotgun. I'll take game but it ain't the reason I'm out there.

I think watching a fire is much the same. I can get mesmerized just sitting in front of a campfire and watching the flames leap and the embers glow. After a while you loose track of time, maybe lost in your own thoughts, but it's still a relaxing experience.

Great post YCC! I have seen many things in person, that a lot of people have only seen on TV.
I've seen owls and hawks take game, coyote pups playing, a couple bucks going at it. I walked right up on, and I mean could have bent over and petted a fawn hiding in the grass once. Man that little thing was shaking so bad staring up at me all big eyed.

The most terrifing thing I've wittnesed, was a group of deer during firearm season.There where 2 full grown does,one at the front and one at the back and three smaller deer in a strait line with thier heads down, (being sneaky) beat hoofing it along a creek. They knew they where being hunted! I felt so terribly sorry for them. You could see the desperation in their movements! I almost gave up hunting at that point, but that is life in the wilds.

Have to tell this one. My son in law's father took him and my 4 year old grandson into woods out near Smith Mountain Lake this past weekend, and grandpa shot what he thought was one deer, and got two, clean dead, one shot. then a youngish boy approached them very upset and said he got a deer but could not find it. They stopped and helped him find the deer he shot but it was not dead. they infomed the boy he had to put down the deer - which he did. 4 year old put his hands on his hips and simply stated, that deer went to the Lord. Great story YCC.

When hunting and in life in general I only take what I need. I am not a trophy hunter. I still hunt all season long but that is just so I can get out and enjoy the outdoors.

I find it really interesting that a 4 year old has a concept of animals having souls and purpose. To recognize that even a wild animal can "go to the Lord" says to me that he will grow up having a particular value on life, and the taking of life. As sportsmen It is important to teach our kids not to kill for thrill or pleasure. Obviously Grampa is doing something right.
These sort of values reflect in daily life, just as sthrnstrong pointed out. Every time an opportunity presents itself, We take that one second (which seems like an hour) to think through it.
This applies to a situation like Crash's being incapacitated. Our adaptability comes directly from our "thinkin time".
