How fast, far could u move on foot, BOB?

With my 50 lb load, I can cover 20 lbs in a fairly easy day, if it's flat-track type travel, and I can do the same the next day. Many can do a great amount in one day, but the next day, they are so sore and blistered that they can't cover 1/4 of what they did the day before.

Just a thought from being around to long, but the older I get the more I see wisdom in having several caches around to resupply. Its a pain to try to carry the kitchen sink.

How fast? Figure about 2 mph average per day, including rest stops, etc.
How far? That depends on too many variables to even guess. The pioneers either walking or in wagon trains would often make 15-20 miles per day, but sometimes only 2 or 3 miles in a day, depending on weather and other conditions.

Y2K, I don't get feet blisters, but at the end of a long hard hike with a heavy load my neck is tight, my lower back might ache and my shoulders are kinda sore. When I wake up, if I slept well I'm ready to do it all over again.

Speaking only for myself, here's why:
I live in NYC and I don't have a car. Hailing a cab's not gonna work (it already doesn't when it rains) nor is any other public transportation, if TSHTF. Even if I had a car, I'd be sitting in gridlock, while on foot, I can move much quicker and have more options of where to go/hide.

I am sure everyone has watched live the aftermath of 9/11 when people en masse walked across the bridges and off the island. I only walked 35 blocks home, bypassing stalled cars, buses and long subway lines.

Forest fire, Earth Quake, There is only one road into the town near where I live. If that road is cut-off, it is 88 miles to the next town.
I would stay here and defend my home, but if it was clear that I would loose the fight to a group of looters, I would drop-back (same as Bugging-out) deeper into the wilderness.
Mostly it is fun, and wise to have a plan "B".

A few years ago the Virginia Department of Commerce erected billboards in the LA area showing beautiful beaches and woodlands. It had a caption that read something like, "Your business could be here just as easily." They put them along the highways so when business owners were sitting in gridlock they could look at those signs. I don't recall the numbers but their plan was pretty successful luring a lot of businesses to the East.

Sit tight while I try to rattle my brain to come up with the response I want, and hopefully it will be presented clearly and concisely.

Everyone should try to have plans in place for what could happen in the area they live in. For some it could be flooding, others it could be earthquakes, hurricanes, volcanoes, tornadoes, and yes civil unrest (see Oakland if you do not believe me). Each of these scenarios should have their on plan whether it be about staying put or evacuating. But just remember not everything goes to plan. What happens if your main stratagem is to use your BOV to "bug out" and it fails? Well, you should be prepared and have an alternate plan to go about your bug out on foot.

If so do you not think you should know what ground you can cover just in case? That way you will know you have enough supplies to last you whether you are using a BOV or going on foot?

Anything that gets you from the bad to the gooder is fair game in my book. But I know that means I might have to hoof it. It's one of the reasons I'm working on snowshoes and a winter sled.

Heck I'm 50 and since quit smoking and have been teking better care of myself I could do that or better. Sorry but IMO that's not all that difficult a task. Easy stride 3 mph walking X 7 hours = 21 miles. Even Rick could do that.

Lots of people found out the hard way how far they could walk when hurricanes Katrina and Rita hit. Even if your bugout vehicle is prepped and ready (which it should be) you may not have any road or through-way to drive it on. (Blocked or flooded)

Some people suggest getting a small game carrier cart or a wheelbarrow to carry the BOB for long treks afoot. They'll do OK, but are quite tiring to use and unstable on uneven ground. I recommend using a large garden cart. They are available in dual wheel models that fold up for storage, and that will haul 3-400 lbs easily. they are easily pushed or pulled, or both, by one or two or more people and very stable and easy to use.
If you figure 3 mph as a walking speed that is very reasonable and most anyone can easily maintain that pace, but only calculate distance covered in time actually walking. I prefer to calculate 2 mph for the time from start to finish in a day, including reststops, lunch, etc. That saves me having to keep track of periods of time walking broken by stops, much simpler for my tiny mind to deal with.

How so? the cart I have seen are basicly the same as the garden cart you mentioned.

During WWII the retreating Germas forced the citizens onto the roadways in an effort to slow down the Allies. It worked incredibly well because of the numbers of people. All were bugging out on foot using whatever they had to haul whatever they could. If you want to know what people will do and how they will react look at history. People are people the world over. Time doesn't change us. I spend a lot of time looking through WWI and WWII photos as well as refugees from modern disasters. My goal is to understand what they are doing and how they are doing it. You can learn a lot from those that have had to do it.

Rick, you are absolutely right on the money. That is why I bought a game hauler and just finished referbing a jogging stroller to carry gear.

Is your game hauler a slider or does it have wheels? One of the things I've had for a while now is a garden wagon. I do use it around the house but I could use it on the road if I have to. Fairly inexpensive and multi-use for me.
