We can call it "home invasion preperation".
What firearm/firearms can you reach without leaving your chair?
You can even cheat a bit if your chair has rollers, just stay in the same room.
Something just went "bump" against the side of the house and I realized all I had available without opening the safe was a .22 ss and a .380!

Reaching for my gun is not my first option, it is my last and have many other things in place for home defense. I have one gun I don't keep in safe and up to the task but I keep it well hidden and under a Bible to make me think for an instant before I use it. My situation may be different because I am one hell of a "Badass" without a gun and handle myself well in violent confrontations. I am surrounded by weapons all the time just not firearms. It is much easier to explain to the law that thier neck accidently got broke than explain bullet holes in them. Anyone thinking it impossible stands no chance by me.

Lots of dogs seem to handle most everything that comes along, at least trip whatever in the dark.
So I would have to actually get up and make an effort to retrieve deployed assets.
Springfield XD 45 w/14 rounds of hollow points. Kel-Tec PF9 w/7 rounds of hollow point and a Mossburg 500 Persuader with 8 rounds of 00 Buck Military Grade. That's what I'd have if everything hadn't been stolen. :whistling:

We've got four dogs in the house that are a pretty good burglar alarm. If I need it, I've got a 9mm close by (usually in a holster on my belt). If someone breaks into my home, they're probably not going to be friendly so I do reach for the gun first.
I've also got a 12 ga. pump easily accessible.

Besides about 200 pounds of guard dogs (2) I have my 9mm on me or next to me at all times. My mossberg 12 ga in the corner near the door. We also have a very good security system as well. If I can get to the bedroom, M4 carbine, pair of .45 1911's, pheonix arms .22 pistol 30.06 rifle, barrett .50, barnett wildcat crossbow, plus a couple other suprises.

I guess I have become complacent, as of late, here in the city house (good neighborhood and all), assets available, but would require a little effort.
Kinda depend on the dogs as first alert and wave.
So, last evening, around midnight stepped out on the front porch for a last relax (a habit), before hitting the rack.
Was surprised to find a van full of rather noisy, and rather unsavory visitors to the next door neighbor, (the whole family rather unsavory, just MO).
Although, other than being noisy, no illegal or threatening activities occurring, just simply being vastly out numbered, I had an uncomfortable feeling, that things could have gone badly very easily.
You know, the "feeling" like almost getting in a serious accident?
Guess, I gonna have to re-think asset re-deployment......................
Just step out on the porch all ablaze. I think the neighbors will pretty much leave you alone after that.
It's always in my pants pocket. I've slept wearing it, many times.

Wise Old Owl - There is a big difference in materials between an ASP or Monadnock baton and something like a Schrade baton. A big difference in price, too. Having said that, I don't think I'd like to have the force applied to any part of my body that you applied to that 4X4; padded or otherwise. You use whatever you have but your point of having something fail at the moment of need is a good one.

Ok. If they can get past the flood lights on motion sensors, get past the locks and into the house i'll be impressed. If i hear a bump i'll be wearing a smile because i won't have to spend money on dog food this week. You see, her favorite food is $hit stained intruder. And that bump sound? That will be the dirt bag's head hitting the doorway as Maxine is dragging the SOB to her personal dining area. Just in case there are multiple intruders and one manages to get to the stairs, my 12yo daughter will be waiting by the door with her .22 (the one she keeps by her bed). The only time I get up is during a full assault. I don't sweat the small stuff.
In his study, The Efficacy of Home Security Measures, Dr. Timothy O'Shea found that owning a dog had little impact on a burglar's decision to enter a home. A finding further supported by earlier research (Buck, Hakim, & Rengert, 1993). His research made a surprising discovery that deadbolts were somewhat unimportant in detering a criminal. More important was the type of door the burglar was confronted with. He found that the type of locking mechanism was not nearly as important as the type of construction of the door. "A quality deadbolt lock set in a flimsy door, affixed to a weak frame is not a formidble barrier."
So unless ole Maxine is highly trained you might wake up to a click instead of a bump and you might be looking up the barrel of someone else's cannon. Just sayin'......

Across the river the SOP is to leave small balls of poisoned meat along the dogs walk path or throw it over the fence to them. Dogs usually last about a week in the rough neighborhoods.
When I was a kid being harassed by dogs on my paper route I would leave them antifreeze treats in a Dixie Cup by the curb.
The first time I ever wished I had a .45 instead of a 9mm was during a dog fight where I was the winner's prize. I found out why they put 13 shots in a Browning HP that day. It's cause you need 6 per dog and one extra.
Most of my education on "stopping power" of the various rounds was learned from close combat of the canine variety.
The experienced home invaders in the nearby city smash the door and shoot the dog immidiately. That usually trumatises the inhabitants who generally care more about the dog than they do each other. They are easier to handle while focused on the dead pet.
The news crews also tend to focus on the animal rather than the people. a murdered little old lady is a 30 second sound bite, a shot dog will get 5 minutes coverage and a $50,000 reward!
Why not carry it? Too lazy? A 1lb 9mm pocket auto goes as unnoticed as your cell phone, after a day of wearing one. There's no reason to ever be without it. People manage to lug around 20-30 lbs of extra fat all the time, and tolerate it clogging their blood vessels, even as they sleep, yet can't be bothered to ccw a 1 lb pistol.

Not all burglars read or read Dr's findings.. Some are dumb and dumber. My personal experience last year in March, was he skipped my home. He hit almost all my nieghbors, some 15 homes in two hours. He skipped stepping onto my property because the video system never recorded him, he saw the dog bowl and "beware of dog" from the street, he skipped the other house with the german shepard. He did kick in every front door that wasn't deadbolted. He went straight to the bedroom took the guns from under the bed and the jewelry and cash that was left around. Skipping the TV's and other stuff. One house he stopped to make a sandwich and kick back. That's really bold in my book. He was caught on video camera at the end of the year with hundreds of burglaries under his belt, by an ADT digital video system when his truck and his face was recorded at one house. Otherwise he would still be out there.

Glock 36 Sub-Compact .45 or a baseball bat.
The whole key to not being burglarized, in my opinion, is to make your house less attractive than your neighbors. Do that in whatever way you can. I think dogs are great alarms and a trained dog is a valuable asset. But someone that has experience with animals and wants in your house will do so and have no trouble out of the dog. Burglars have been known to take the dog, too!
I just hate to see folks so self assured that their dog will stop an intruder. It might and it might not. If you figure the dog is just an alarm then you won't get disappointed. If you expect the dog to be the first line of defense then I think the trust in the animal is woefully misplaced.

I do not live in any fear of burglars doing me any harm. they come when no one is around. It is the home invader that is the real danger. They know you are home and come in intending to do you harm.
As far as attractiveness of a target goes, you would be amazed. The criminal eliment does not have the same preception you and I do. Totally different mind set. And the preference of young people to walking, talking, driving the ride and wearing the clothes of a dealer just reenforces their attitude.
There were peoiple I worked with that thought the only way most middle class people could live like they did was because they were dealing the really good drugs.
A clean mowed yard with a late model car in the drive means nothing to us but a hard working guy paying his bills. To getto trash it means a dealer with a good stash. kick down his door and take his stuff!

No guns In my house. Big brother may be watching here. OK, for real, I got a Remy 870 tactical (loaded with a piggy back attached), Glock 22 (three loaded mags), Kahr MK9 (2 loaded mags), Smith 5 shot .38 (w/ spare speed loader), and a High Standard 22 LR derringer all in my master bedroom strategically placed. Everything else is locked away to stay out of the hands of felons that like to borrow other peoples stuff. I figure I have the "bump in the night" thing covered. My wife hates all the harware hanging around but I use this stuff on nearly a daily basis depending on what I'm doing and see no need to wear out the door hinges on my safe. I never leave guns in the car over night either.

With now 2 little ones at home. We have gates at the top and bottom of the stairs. All the bedrooms are on floor 2.
Both gates are noisy, and a little complicated to open. Every time we have a visitor we have to show them.
Now I imagine a burglar coming in in the night trying to get up stairs. He can know how to open the gate, in the dark, which is unlikely. He can try stepping over it, but it is on stairs, and 3 feet ish high. I can step the lower one barely, but I'm 6'5. Even I can't do the upper one since I'm standing one step lower than it at the top.
Chance are he'll trip, fall, try to knock them over, all of which makes a ton of noise. Even opening them normally is very noisy (they're both made of hollow metal tubes welded together, clang clang clang). Especially in the dark, especially if he is in a hurry. He could hurt himself on my stairs.
It isn't security, but it is a pretty good obstacle for reaching the second floor.
You might pick up a second story fire escape ladder. If the bad guys can't get up then you might have trouble getting down during a fire....or be trapped. I've got a set in our bedroom just in case.
Chris
12-03-2010, 09:36 PM
We know how to operate the gates though. They're not hard to open (I have to open them dozens of times a day, one handed) they're just not obvious (child proof). Though I have thought about those ladders. Not too hard though since the fire dept is just a half mile away.

......Has anyone seen the videos that fire alarms don't wake children?
I did see a news story on that a while back. Weren't they working on different sounds/voices for the alarm that would wake them quicker?
Voice alarm. We have 4 of them in our house. They were made by SignalOne Safety under the name of KidSmart but I don't think the company is in business any more. They may have been bought out, I don't know.
I have them because I can't hear a standard smoke alarm. The pitch is in the range where I'm deaf so I have to use something else. The voice alarm is very loud and since I recorded the message it's in a lower range that I can hear.
This has been around a while but really demonstrates the difference with kids.

Never bring a knife to a gun fight. :gun_bandana:
From what I understand LEO's used to shoot anyone with an edged weapon (even including screwdrivers) within 33' distance. Even shot multiple times the assailant was still able to get to a LEO and manage to wound, maim, or kill a LEO who had shot him multiple times. I understand that now the distance has been increased further.... even at 33' LEO's were still being wounded, maimed, or killed by a determined assailant. Not just drugged up ones either. Now that is 10 yards distance, most homes don't have 10 yards of space in any room. If they manage to get within hand to hand range(CQC) a firearm is just as dangerous to the user as to the attacker.
I have 1 gun... just 1, a 10/22 Ruger. Great for rabbits and coyotes. Not much for anything else.... unless absolutely necessary. But never count out a .22, it seems to be that at one time an assassins favorite weapon was a .22. More about shot placement than anything else I'm sure. As a kid I recall a man that was killed by a .22 revolver at a "Juke joint". Everyone talked about that for a long time. Plus I don't have to worry too much about bullets going through walls and wounding/killing an innocent neighbor ( My closest neighbor is still a 1/4 mile away) I have numerous other "Weapons" though.... a hoe handle and many knives, machete, tomahawks, etc... That's just what's in the house. In the shop there are hammers, boards, some 3' long pieces of O-1 steel(Just think sword without a point or edge)...... Even in some "Rough neighborhoods"(Like when I was homeless) I had some people avoid me.... seems I can look truly evil and scary when the need arises. Which works for me, if I have them beat psychologically from the outset, they've already lost without anything happening.
I knew a guy that was one of these robbery types. When I found out that he was that sort of person our association ended abruptly. Even though I have some stuff that he would Love to steal, he never tried it (and he knew what we have), mainly because he would rather deal with police than me. Police would be more lenient, and he knew this.
As for our dog... well the only danger she poses is in licking someone to death. Buuuut if you come on the property she lets us know someone is here, which gives me ample time to fill my hands with whatever I need... whether it is a glass of Tea.... or something not so welcoming, and I have walked out with rifle in hand. Even when the wife comes home, the dog lets me know that the wife is here. Doesn't matter who it is, she raises cane! Her only use is as an early warning device and a pet.

LEOs in the USA use the "21' rule"....that being that a person with an edged weapon (or any hand held implement) can run at you from 21' away and stab/slash you before you can draw and fire on them. Remember, LEOs usually use double retention or even triple retention holsters to keep their pistols from being taken away when wrestling a suspect. These are slow drawing holsters, not the quick draw type that cowboys use.
I have been retired for 3 years, so things may have changed.

Thank you. That is the right distance... not the 33' I said above.... I have heard that it has been increased further than that now though.... whether that is true or not I don't know.
Really though my only point is that many people think that just because they have a gun and their assailant only has a knife, that they are safe.( I have at least one knife that I know will penetrate a vest[it is one of my EDC items too]) That they will survive and the knife wielder won't. While this may be true in the majority of cases, there are exceptions to every rule. Being overly confident has caused many a downfall. If someone with a knife can get in close enough, it could be all over. In CQC the firearm is actually equally dangerous to both parties equally. In such an instance if the knife wielding assailant actually can slash tendons, it's pretty much over for the one with a firearm.
Even worse, is even if mortally wounded and able to get in just one lucky slash, it could be lethal for both. Granted it is a hypothetical situation, but isn't that what all scenarios are? Even a falling person with a knife COULD hit an artery. Vests for instance only cover vital organs, not all vulnerable spots. i.e. neck, underarms, and groin, where arteries lie close to the surface. Even so most body armor that I am familiar with/aware of, will not stop a blade. A stab downward into the subclavian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subclavian_artery) Artery is almost certain death, probably even in a hospital parking lot. Now I know some will say this is "Mall-ninja-ish" but take into account adrenaline. This will make you shake, which with a gun can make you miss, with a knife it just adds a sawing motion.
In another thread I saw something reading something like this...."If knives are so successful against guns why doesn't the military use them more?" Well they are used in Sentry take-out, which involves stealth and surprise as well as special training and technique. Yes given my "Druthers" I'd "Druther" have a firearm than a knife.... ANY firearm.... than a knife. It just scares me how many people think that JUST because they have a firearm, that a knife is just an element of a joke. A weapon is a weapon, ALL are dangerous IF they are in the hands of a person who knows the uses and limitations of that weapon. I'd be willing to bet that if you pulled a gun on old WV Coot within striking range of his cane, you'd have a broken hand AND a busted head... maybe worse.
If I pulled a gun on coot it would just be to hand it to him. I think he could hit me while I'm sitting at home. AS could hit me if I just think about it.

LOL I wouldn't pull it unless I asked him if I could first!!! He just might misunderstand my intentions!!! I can't afford a busted up hand!! Even if he said it was OK, I would do so very slowly.....

Maybe I should throw in a little personal experience... one of those things that I know, but have forgotten that I know, until now......
Back when I was in the military, Guard duty was one of those things that all of us had to do at one time or another. One very sensitive site that we were actually given live ammo to guard it with, was BLSA(Basic Load and Storage of Ammo.... an ammunition "Dump"). On one night and the ONLY time I have experienced being rushed while holding a loaded weapon in my hand. (Without one in the chamber)
The OOG(Officer of the Guard) walked around checking the guards. As he approached I halted and challenged him as was proper protocol. He did NOT respond with the "password", instead he rushed me. Even with a loaded M-16 at the port he was upon me before I could pull the charging handle even. My Fully Automatic Death dealing firearm suddenly became a very fancy club, and he narrowly missed a Butt stroke to the head. The SOG(Sergeant of the Guard) ordered me to stand down, the OOG backed off and proceeded to ask me a series of questions. "Why didn't I chamber a round the VERY second he hesitated?" "Why did I allow him to touch my weapon?"(The only reason he didn't get knocked out)......... This went on for about 5 minutes. He made his point. Every time I was confronted while on guard duty from then on my hands were in a "Modified Port Arms" one hand gripped the forestock... the other the charging handle(Even though when out of sight I had already chambered a round). Even with one in the chamber it would have been "Iffy" if I could have brought my weapon to bear in time. Now.... if he had had a knife, AND was serious..... who knows? As soon as he was out of earshot I got on the radio and told the other guards..... He was not as successful with them, One even aimed at him. :m107: :cold: I got my payback.:innocent:
I wonder what he would have done if you had given him a short burst as he was rushing you?

I wonder what he would have done if you had given him a short burst as he was rushing you?
Well Rick, he had the Element of surprise. Who would think your OOG would do something like that? I had been on that post several other times and it was always the same. "Halt.... advance to be recognized.... halt.....Sunburst.........Junebug.... you may pass." With the officer stopping and asking you to recite your General orders, and other Guard duty and Chain of Command type stuff. Some even got cute and asked for the 4th General order...." I will walk my post from flank to flank and take no S**T off anyones rank"... but he decided to put it to the test. After him is when I started chambering a round out of sight when my guard duty started (we knew where the blind spots in the cameras were). Close to the end of my guard shift I would un-chamber the round again out of sight. Before him, it never occurred to me to do this, as it was a violation of the rules. No he counted correctly on everyone following the rules and the surprise/shock to keep him safe as well as the SOG along with him.
I was the only one he tried that on, as he again knew that I would tip off the other guards. But he did chew out the guy that pointed his weapon at him. But that was the extent of his "Punishment". Any other time he would have brought him up for Article 15 proceedings(Non-judicial punishment). He knew he had got what he deserved for pulling a stunt like that. But he DID make me think.
It carried over in other instances in my career too. Like being put on alert due to possible terrorist activity, and being sent out with unloaded weapons to "Guard" something..... I just stuck my 9MM in my waistband under my shirt.:whistling: Or took my own ammo.... Something a Ranger taught me... a 5.56 M-16 will shoot .223 ammo. Soooo........I guess what he did wasn't stupid or a waste.

Heh, I'm not posting my personal and/or home defense secrets online. If someone comes in, they'll just have to guess what's waiting for 'em.

Here in New Zealand we are not allowed weapons for self defence so theoretically the thirty odd knives, throwing stars, batons, bull whips and high powered air rifle close enough to my desk to grab quickly are for display purposes only ;)
Of course the shotgun and seven rifles in my bedroom closet are only for hunting too lol
