Good Morning all!

I have tried the search feature however I wasn't sure what to look for thus was unable to get any results and so thought I would post instead :blushing:

As I mentioned in my introduction thread (http://www.wilderness-survival.net/forums/showthread.php?p=246854#post246854) I'm a complete survival newbie. I'm looking for a "beginner guide" that will possibly have steps to take to learn about survival and all that it entails. For example some things to read or exercises to practice over the winter that will help me to get started camping in spring with less reliance on all of the conveniences that I (and my boyfriend especially) are used to.

I would love to start learning how to identify and prepare edibles in our area and further north as this is where we will be heading eventually and also how to avoid / defend against the local wildlife (Northern Canada has a LOT of bears).

If anyone can recommend some things to get me started I would be most appreciative ;)

How I do things:

Check out what natural and man-made resources you have around your in area and home. Figure out what all uses you can come up with them. Toilet paper for tinder, insulation, bandages, etc... Spruce roots for cordage, shelter building, etc... Try to come up with multiple uses for all the resources you have. And remember, everything is a resource. The nature is never against you, it just is. Use what you got with best of your ability and you have great chance of getting through anything. How wouldn't you, when everything there is is an opportunity to make your life easier. If you fail, it's not nature's fault, it's your fault. You failed to see and utilize the opportunities the world gave you. That's at least how I see things.

Koldriana, welcome to the forum and the bush. This is a good way to start.
Chapters or Coles do carry some books on "bushcraft and survival" peruse them in store and get one that you can comprehend easily (Boy Scout manuals are extremely good and you can get them at a second hand store or the Canadian Boy Scout store...read it and start practising what you have read.. don't worry if it doesn't come easy or fast (nothing that is worthwhile ever does..persevere) them get another book at a later date that will give you more information
Be awares of wild life in general but not overly afeared of bears, encounters are few and far inbetween, treasured them. Bear spray (buy 2) is the best deterrent use one for practise at a distance of no greater than 20', aim low and work it up to your target rather than just spraying wildly (be awares of the wind bears love pepper flavored humans) :D:scared:
I am spending more time in that area probably will live with my son soon.
Several books on teh edible wilds are available at Coles or Chapters (be mindful that they are like all vegetation ... seasonal)

Lots of bears is right (some of my misguided youth was spent at Petawawa). The dump bears where the worst, it was nothing to count 20 or 30. Two cans of bear spray is a good plan! On occasion they come around my home and I run them off with a handheld marine air horn, it scares the bejesus out of them.

Koldriana, I would like to use you as an example to make a point and hope you don't take it personal since it applies to 95 percent of the population. I have seen countless numbers of people make the move to more rural settings and one of the reasons so many fail is thier preconcieved notions they refuse to let go of. You say you have little or no experience and want to survive yet you already have your mind set on what you want to learn. KEEP AN OPEN MIND. Learn from the locals that know how to live there. Reality is not going to change to adapt to your fantasy. Again this is not just for you but all the dreamers.

Reading is good and there are lots of sources for information in books, magazines, the internet, etc. There are also some good videos that you can watch on DVDs, YouTube, etc.

However, one of the big problems comes from deciding which of the many sources is worth spending you time reading/watching. Different "survival experts" portray very different views on how survival is to be accomplished. Some contend that you must fight against nature as nature is "out to get you" whereas others contend that you must "become one" with nature and "embrace" its "natural rhythm." (Personally I mostly agree with the idea espoused by NCO that nature is neither for nor against anything. It just is. We are as much a natural part of nature as anything else.) So too, a lot of the stuff being put out nowadays is just pure balderdash and attempting to imitate it can prove dangerous, even deadly.

And of course, just because you've read that something can be done, and even how to do it, doesn't mean you (or I) could actually do it in the field. For example, I know the rules to basketball and even understand a bit of the strategy involved in the game, but you'd be an absolute fool to ever put me on your team or worse yet, to ask me to be your coach. Intellectually understanding the game is not the same as being able to play. Therefore, as you start learning, may I suggest you try to follow some of the following:

Attempt and become familiar with new skills at home first. Building a fire with no matches, for example, is better learned in your front yard than in the wilderness where if you don't get the fire going, you are going to freeze all night.
"Newbies" should not go into the woods with just "a knife, a flint, and a water bottle." In fact, don't venture into the woods alone at all until you have proven your skills with backup available. Find friends or relatives that enjoy camping and go with them, practicing your new skills in circumstances where, if/when you fail, you aren't in trouble.
Don't try to do everything at once. Learn a skill, become proficient in it, then go on to something else.
Understand that failing is part of learning, and part of the fun. What's more, failure is not always anyone's (or anything's) fault. It is possible to play a perfect game, to do everything right, to make no mistakes, and to still lose. Embrace the experience and don't place unreasonable expectations of perfection on yourself.

Don't think you can do it all at once, you can't. It's a lifestyle change and there are phases to it. As others have said, education is the key. Right now you probably don't know what you don't know so pick a topic and begin learning about it. Since you said you want to travel even further north may I suggest you start with that?

Take some trips to where you think you might want to live and spend some time there. As AS said, talk to the locals. Observe them. Look at what they wear, what they do for work and how they live. If you intend to live there those are the kinds of things you'll be doing. You have to make a living some how so look and see if you can make a living where you want to go. Read as much about the area as you can get your hands on but go there and talk to the local folks. Spend a week or longer if you can each time you go.

Deciding where you want to live might be the first step in your learning process.

Thanks for the great start everyone and tsitenha that was an AWESOME idea for the Boy Scout guides!

Just to clarify if thee is any confusion. When I'm saying that we will eventually end up going north this is probably going to be at least 5 - 10 years (if not more) in the future. Hopefully by then we won't be such newbies.

I have decided that the first thing I wish to research is the identification of local flora/fauna etc as this is a topic I enjoy a lot and have been interested in for years. I have no desire to just go into the wild with only a knife and a backpack or what-have-you. On the contrary, we plan to take it very slowly..as in glacial speed :) Also not to say that I won't be trying to learn other things also but I find that when there is just so much to learn it's easier to break it up into smaller bites.

I realize that without actually knowing me its hard to get a sense but trust me when I say that we are both reasonably intelligent individuals, we are super anal about planning, reviewing pretty well every "what if" scenario you can think of and neither one of us have any interest in being candidates for the next Darwin Award LOL

Not to worry, I won't be coming here and announcing that were going into the wilds without being properly prepared anytime soon. We are however going out for a little hike with a friend and the toddler today in a safe location etc..

Stretching the horizons is a great thing. Spend some time hiking short distances and make note of things that would have been handy to have. On the next trip, take those along in a pack of some type. Don't forget water and a cell phone on this trip, however. Ooooh, and a camera. We need pics!!

I tried my BOB in the garden and very quickly discovered some things I didn't need and other things I did. Oh that's a point don't be afraid to try stuff in your backyard! I'm supposed to be a grown-up, and did it. the postman is convinced I'm potty, but what do I care?
The other thing you might consider is getting into gardening and preserving. Those are skills you can take anywhere and if you intend to head north, you may need to have a store of winter supplies. Preserving your own is cheaper, healthier and much more satisfying than buying from the store.

I apologize if you've already read it, but I do think it's important. Sounds like you've already picked an area to focus most of your attention though.

"That's the ticket! Pick one thing and focus on it. It could be that you don't want to carry a heavy tent or bedroll, it could be that you want to find alternative ways to start fire or edibles to pick which might save you some weight in the pack.

But, whatever it is pick one thing to start, get it down and move on to the next. At least that's what works for me.

There are so many possibilities when it comes to survival, wilderness living, homesteading or what have you. It helps to decide on one area and one specific skill and go from there. Otherwise it can be overwheming.

Are you looking to go off in the wildrness and live with minimal supplies? or make a self sufficient sustainable homestead? Do you like high tech gear or are you a minimalist who wants to use natural materials to get the job done?

pick one area, it can always change later, and pick one topic in that area to learn and gain experience with.

For me, I'm a wanna be minimalist. So, I look for things that will keep me from dragging around or being tied down to heavy gear and the like. So, I first chose wild edibles. First it was animals and fish, then mushrooms, and now wild plants. That evolved into learning other uses for those plants besides eating, such as cordage or tinder. Now, I'm focusing on fire. Not just primitive fire, but every kind of fire imaginable.

I've always been interested in every aspect of outdoor living, adventure, camping, log home buidling, frontier living, etc. etc. But, it wasn't until I broke it down into managable parts, and picked one thing to focus on, that I learned anything.

I can't tell you what to decide on or help steer you in any one direction. Do read, talk and listen. But, whatever you decide on, practice. Only by testing the methods, materials, and putting the skills to use will you ever learn anything."

I would highly suggest Tom Brown's field guide,Wilderness Survival.
At the end of each chapter it has a exercises that you can try.
That's a good start.

Thanks I'll try to get hold of it also.

I'm slowly working on my 30 plants that I snapped pictures of, i think I have about 7 or 8 done. Some I have had to abandon as they aren't good enough pictures to use or there are 4 or 5 other plants that look almost identical and I don't have the detail required in my pics. I'm hoping to get some good progress on it today. I'm leaving the mushrooms for last LOL
