Tips: For a Batoning Virgin....or what do I need to know BEFORE I get my knife stuck.

OK, I have split a lot of cords of firewood, but I am a Batoning Virgin. So before I get my new BK-9 hopelessly stuck in a giant redwood. What do I need to know.......?

I really am looking for advise, and I guess others maybe also. Like don't hammer on the handle (scales). Or don't use a rock for a hammer, etc.

I use a conveniently sized piece of wood to baton through the inconveniently sized piece of wood.

Is there a standard as to how much of the blade needs to stick out beyond the log being split, I can see that at some point there is nothing to wack, if the blade is 6" and the log starts at 4" but has a knot that makes it 7".

Hold the handle firmly, have enough of your blade extending beyond the diameter of the wood you are going to split, while holding your BK where you want the piece to split start hitting with a piece of wood that you can comfortably hold in your hand. Hit directly above the wood you are splitting. As the knife gets buried in the wood, continue hitting on the portion of the blade that is sticking out (this is why you want as much as possible sticking out on the side opposite the handle). Keep hitting until it is split. If you try and split a piece that is too big and do not have a "hammer surface" sticking out - that is when your knife gets stuck.

Many say the convexed grid is better than the v-grind for batonig/splitting. I just batton with whatever grind is on the blade. Also remind you that it's easier to baton on a hard surface instead of something soft like loose dirt or mud. I don't always completely baton all the way through. Lots of times it's easier for me to get it almost done and then just pull the rest apart with my hands.

I would never try to baton through a knot. That's just me. Any imperfection in a wood that makes it super tough, like a knot, I avoid. I'll trim pieces off around the knot or just find another piece of wood. Batoning is tough on a knife no matter how good of a knife it is so look for the easier pieces to split.

I would never baton in a survival situation. Especially if that were the only knife I had. It's one thing to knock a chuck out of a blade or break a blade 20 feet from the truck. It's another thing entirely if you are 240 miles from the nearest person.

Seriously, splitting wood is not the only or best reason to baton. Mac's video shows how you can gain control of the edge while using short taps to drive the edge. Driving the blade to cut limbs by working around the limb.

Oh, that sounded wrong. But batoning is fun and who knows you may need to do it one day. I, like others, tend to find a piece of wood about 18-24 inches long to use to baton the knife through the wood.

And I think it's a good idea to put your tool to the test to make sure it will not bend, break, or chip off during use.

Sourdough, you know what it is like to go out with people that don't have the proper gear. One of the gold claims I got invovled with in your neck of the woods all the other guys brought stick matchs. Two weeks later I was the most popular guy in camp with my Zippo. Are you going to be one of those guys? You can baton a hatchet too and I do when making final cuts to log notches in cabins when precise cuts are needed.

I like that, safer too than tugging or prying on the knife to free it.

Also SD, don't stand directly above the blade or put your head there because if the blade does break it's likely to fly straight up and stick you in the head.

I like using a long knotty piece of wood for the batton, like a hammer, and don't batton thru knots either, like Rick said.

If you're doing pieces that are wider than your knife blade is long, start the batton with a knife, insert a wedge to finsih the job. You can fashion a nice wedge pretty quick, or just use an already battoned piece as the wedge.

Good to know, I guess, and have done it, just didn't know what you called it "officially".

It's like splitting wood with an axe, done all the time, but a maul and wedge is better and safer.

I don't generally need an axe or saw. But, batoning can be useful when all you have is a knife or small hatchet

I baton all the time for fire making. alot of dead standing wood is wet on the outside but the inside is bone dry.

Use small wood to start off and see how easy/hard it is first, then work up from there.

Honestly, I've been building campfires since I can remember and the whole batoning thing is a new phenomenon to me. There is plenty of smaller stuff in the woods that you can break to size. I've never needed to split wood like that before. I have split large cane with a knife, but that's too easy and doesn't count.

Splitting small stuff does make for some good kindleing, but I've always managed to find plenty twigs and grassy stuff to get a fire going anyway so I don't fuss with more work that I have to.

I suppose there are some projects where a nice half-moon shaped piece of wood would come in handy, but most things can be accomplished by sellecting the right sized wood and just notching it.

The Indians didn't have fancy knives capable of splitting hunks of wood and they were able to create incredible things using only chipped stone tools. Surely you can do as well or better with a nice modern fixed blade.

This pretty much mirrors my thoughts as well. I'm not sure I really understand batoning. It seems like something "experts" do to prove that they are experts somehow but, I don't see the material value in it.

It does appear to be a great way to bugger up an otherwise good knife.

I have spent a great deal of time in both National and State parks and have never encountered a "don't pick up dead wood" rule.

You can't cut down standing trees but whatever is on the ground is fair game.

I've been to Yosemite, Sequoya, and Big Bend recently and they didn't have that rule.

Don't you just love the government's "wisdom." We spend millions of dollars every year supressing the forest fires that are nature's way of cleaning out old dead material and providing space for new growth but, you can't pick up naturally dead wood in the forest because it would "disturb the flora of the forest floor."

We often have burn bans everywhere, park or not just because of fire hazard. I have often thought that if everybody "Bugs Out" the first thing they are going to do is burn the forest down. The second will be gut shooting all the game from a 1000 yards with AK 47's. I generally don't worry about them catching any fish.

Around here you have to purchase it. The emerald ash borer is a real problem so they make you purchase it to prove you didn't bring in the wood from outside. They give you a receipt and that receipt is your proof if Ranger Rick questions you. Otherwise, they take the wood and you get to keep a piece of paper that you can send in with your money.

Down at Big South Fork they were cool with collecting downed wood. In Indiana you have to purchase it.

Batoning is a good skill to learn. I don't use it much for firewood because there are plenty of twigs and stuff for that. But, if I go up north a lot of the small wood has been used up in high traffic areas. Also, it's good for making fireboards and such. I don't carry a hatchet so it's a big help. And if you do it right it's perfectly fine for the knife and safety as well.

Plus, if it's been raining it's nice to batton down to get to the drier inner wood.

I think battoning like many other skills are look at from a linear angle all too often. It is a skill that is not just for spitting firewood but for use in crafting weapons, shelters and other tools. By learning how to batton with your knife you can learn how your knife responds to battoning. Some blades split well and others will twist in the wood. With tis knowledge you can then preform more delicate task like building weapons shelters and tools as mention earlier.

It's time to think outside the tepee :)

Batch, it depends on where you are. I've been to places where it is free and I've been to places where you have to purchase it. More often than not you have to buy it. Some of the national forests I've been in you can use whatever you gather. A couple of national and state forests I've been given the wood. The state parks I've been in and a couple of other national forests I've had to buy it.
