Couldn't find an existing thread about this but didn't look waaayy back....
Larry had asked about wormwood and horsetail (by the way Larry, I'm envious of all the edible greens you got there!!).
We use wormwood as a tea when we get a cold, and also for an upset stomach (gts your stomach juices going, so good after fatt or heavy meals). It makes a great herb for the sauna or sweatlodge, very aromatic.
Horsetail can be drunk as a tea for stomach ulcers and bronchitis, it is a styptic (stops bleeding) and high in silica. Shouldn't be drunk for longer than 2 weeks though, could aggravate kidney stones. Makes a good wound wash due to antiseptic and styptic properties. Also a good poultice for infected cysts.
A great book is "Discovering wild plants" by Janice Schofield. Focussed on Alaska/northwestern North America. Includes the edible, medicinal, cosmetic and hstric use of plants, even recipes for making liniments, salves etc
What are the medicinal plants that you've used, and in which way?

I drink a lot of lamb's quarter tea (in moderation) for the Vitamin C and beta-carotene. It is a good pick-me-up tea too.
Boiled Juniper berry tea works well as an antiseptic wash for cuts.
A Witch Hazel poultice stops mosquito bite itching and helps stop bleeding.
I use Sphagnum Moss as wilderness TP, and it works great for soothing and healing rashes and chaffing.
Here are some medicinal plants that anyone can identify:
Teas are made by steeping one handful of leaves or needles in one pint (.5L) of water for 10 minutes. Roots and bark should be shredded or crushed thoroughly before steeping. Poultices are made by crushing a plant part(s) into a paste, forming it into a flat pad (adding water as needed) and applying it directly to the skin. Then bind it in place.
Coneflower (Echinacea spp*.): Root or leaf tea is highly antiseptic and can be used to clean sores and insect bites.
Birch (Betula spp.): Strong tea made from bark, twigs or leaves used as a wash. Gargle sooths sore mouth and throat.
Black Walnut (Juglans nigra): Strong leaf tea repels insects and kills bedbugs.
Sunflower (Helianthus spp.): Tea is taken for fevers, coughs and bronchitis.
White Clover (Trifolium repens): Leaf tea soothes coughs, fevers and colds. Tea of the similar Red Clover works as well.
Beebalm (Monarda spp.): Once you smell this guy one time you won't forget it. Calming tea is used for stomach upset and insomnia. I use this one quite a bit just because I like it.
Common Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale): The tea is a gentle remedy for stomach upset. Root tea is a diuretic.
Cattail (Typha spp.): A tea of crushed roots eases diarrhea. Leftover root paste can be used to soothe skin irritation and stings.
Oak (Quercus spp.): Boil acorns to produce an astrigent was that helps to relieve skin irritation and stop bleeding.
A few that you should learn if you spend a lot of time outdoors are:
Speedwell (Veronica spp.): Tea is rich in Vitamin C and is a cold and cough remedy.
Heal-all (Prunell vulgaris): Use the tea as a wash on wounds and sores. Gargling tea will help relieve sore throats.
Wild Strawberry (Fragaria spp.): Tea remedies diarrhea. Poutice can be used to treat wounds.
*spp refers to sub species.
From anti-septics to keeping bugs away to stopping diarrhea and bleeding to sore throats. Learn those few plants and you will be able to handle most problems you run into in the wild.

rick is scratching his head ? A good stiff brew of chamomile tea used as a rinse will help that. Also for those who are suseptible to poison ivy, there is a plant called jewelweed that when applied to the area of affliction will cure the rash and take away the itching. As with most poisonous plants , the remedy is usually growing nearby.
Thank you, Native Dude. I would point everyone to post #4, which seems to be worthy of repeating. That fellow seems to know his stuff but was verbally attacked by the near-do-wells around here. They're just like a bunch of rowdys in a saloon. that bunch.

Wow there Wild Woman, now that is a pile of info on Wormwood and Horsetail. I will be sure to put some of that knowledge to work for me this year now! I agree with you, we do have a pile of edible greens down here compared to your more Northern environment. Around Ottawa, Red and White Clover leaves and blossoms, make an excellent and soothing tea fairly early in the year. Also Purple Coneflower leaves and petals in the summer also get used a lot. The tender bud-like, branch tips of White and Black Birch, Maple, Willow and Pine and White Cedar trees, make a fine tea for what ail's ya, anytime!
Wild Strawberry leaves have been one of my staples for over four decades. I've even dug them out from under two feet of snow in the middle of winter and they worked just fine. Jewel Weed, crushed and mashed and rubbed on your skin where you've contacted Poison Ivy as soon as possible, WILL stop you from becoming infected. I've used this a few times, on purpose, to make sure it worked. By the way, I also use a trick that I learned from Euell Gibbons famous book, Stalking the Wild Asperagus, many years ago. Most would be afraid to try it, but Euell was my wild food hero back in those days and I trusted him, big time. O.K., the trick is to pick and eat three tiny leaves from the Poison Ivy plant for about a week in the early spring, each time the leaves are a tiny bit bigger. When I'm done, up to two weeks later, the largest leaflet I've consumed is perhaps a half inch long and a nice reddish color. I HAVE NOT had any Poison Ivy attacks, ever, despite the many, many times I've had to travel through a whack of the stuff. Take all that for what it's worth folks 'cause I know most peeps would be too scared to do such a treatment.
Oh Wareagle, I think I stumbled across a small patch of that cannybus stuff you were talkin' 'bout, last fall in one of my deer stalkin' spots. :o Sure enough, after "freezing in place" in the long grasses for three or four minutes and of studyin' anything & everything, I noticed the slight glow of skinny copper in the sunlight, seven or eight feet from me... Hmmmmm, says I, what to do?
To make a pretty long and wild story a little shorter...
Well, I finally got myself home safe and sound and right away I put the kettle on for some tea to relax my bones after a wild day in the bush. I wasn't quite finished that cup when I started to get a big smiley on. Then a very real relaxed feeling came over me. Sitting there, relaxed, smiling and happy was neat. Next thing I knew, I was headed for the rack, with a need for sleep tuggin' at my ol' bod. Man, talk about natural medicines that grow in the wilds. Those naughty little puppies could possibly become a part of my sacred medicine pouch for those tough, physical days when ya need just a little more than Coneflower tea, to sooth that poor old mind and bod. Guess I'll just have to use my other three deer stalkin' spots next year, eh?
Nativedude, I'm with ya on the S-Moss, super stuff! I've even used it as a sort of pillow stuffing in an ordinary plastic grocery store bag. Works fine and smells nice and earthy and healthy and stuff.

my teacher is a big fan of euell gibbons and they are in my collection i have two of three books the seafood one i don't need, but here is a question for you larry b
being in ottawa i would assume you spend time in the ottawa valley from rnfreww to algonquin park(i worked in barry's bay for 5 months loved it) any how ever eat any wild mussels and if so how did you prepared them.

Sorry Wareagle, I've got to disappoint you. If it is cannabis, far from disarming the trip wires I set some of my own! Its one of the curses we have over here.
The people who grow it tend to shoot first and ask questions later.
WE - I know your question was to LarryB but I thought I'd give you some info. I used to eat mussels but haven't for a number of years for several reasons. Pollution for one and most of the 200-300 native species are now endangered or at least threatened in part by the zebra mussel. The blasted things have taken over the Great Lakes and most all watersheds in the Midwest. I'd be really surprised if the same isn't true for the Ottawa River and surrounding tributaries.
For those that don't know, mussels are filter feeders, which means anything in the water is either inside their itty bitty bodies or on them including viruses, bacteria, and any kind of pollutant. So never, ever, eat them raw. That aside, here are a couple of pretty common Midwest recipes for preparing them. Most of the folks I know use them or some variant.
Use only mussels that are tightly closed. If they have opened a bit, tap them and they should close immediately. If they don't, toss them. However you fix them, you will want to scrub the shells to remove any dirt/sand or other debris that would get in your finished meal. Just use a vegetable brush or a toothbrush to scrub them.
Mussels with garlic and lemon.
8 to 10 quarts mussels in shell
3 ribs celery, chopped
2 medium onions, sliced
1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
1 large clove garlic
1 large lemon, sliced
2/3 cup water
Scrub the mussels washing them in clear, lukewarm water. Change the water 3 to 4 times then set aside.
Put celery, chopped onions, parsley, garlic, lemon and water to a large pot. Cover the pot and cook for about 15 minutes, or until vegetables are tender. Add your mussels.
Cover and cook for about 15 minutes, or until mussels are open. You will want to shake the kettle a few times to prevent the mussels from sticking. Sort of like popcorn.
Discard any mussels that did not open during cooking.
Serve in the broth.
*******************************************
Steamed Mussels
2 lbs. mussels
1 small to medium carrot, cut into small dice
1 stalk celery, cut into small dice
1 small onion, cut into small dice
Salt and pepper to taste
Olive oil, as needed
2 garlic cloves, finely chopped
1 cup chicken stock
4 oz. dry white wine
Chopped parsley to taste
Rinse and scrub as described above and discard any that are cracked or open and will not close.
Sautι the carrot, celery, and onion, with salt and pepper in the olive oil until softened but not brown. Add the garlic and sautι one more minute. Deglaze the pan with the stock and wine and bring to a boil.
Add the mussels, cover, and cook until the mussels open.
Sprinkle the mussels with parsley and eat with a side of bread for dipping in the juice.
Stick to grazers such as limpets and chitons on the coast. they are much safer.

Any chance of seeing some pictures? I am trying to play some "catch-up" on these plants. I found a pretty cool book, I have been reading slowly (2 years). Here's the book link:
http://www.amazon.com/Medicinal-Plants-World-Ben-Erik-van/dp/0881926027
Anybody else with some other books they find useful? I need some pictures because I haven't seen many of these plants in real life. Anybody with any experience on making a "medicinal garden"? Not THAT type of garden :)! A healing plants garden?

Doc, I haven't tried to propagate wild species in our garden, but Michael Moore's book "Medicinal Plants of the Mountain West" has info on how to grow wild medicinal plants at home.
One of our favourite concoctions for stomach and intestinal upset of unspecified reason is a tea of willow and highbush cranberry bark plus lousewort. Painkilling, anti-cramping and muscle relaxing. Also seems to work really well on our dogs!
I don't know if cottonwood trees also grow over in the east (populus balsamifera)? The Balm of Gilead salve you can make from the resin covered buds in the wintertime is another of our favourites. Well worth the effort!!! Cover buds in olive oil and heat in a double-boiler for about 1 1/2 hours to extract the resin from the buds. Strain through cheesecloth, heat up the strained oil again and add beeswax to thicken. The result is a salve you can use on skin rashes, sores, as lip balm and even deodorant since it's antibacterial. Really works. I always add some Balm to other salves because it is a natural preservative and will prevent the ointments from going rancid.
We also make arnica salve, that stuff also really works, good for muscle strain and tendonitis. Same process as making Balm of Gilead, but using the flowers of Mountain Arnica and heating the oil and flowers for only aout half an hour.

Hi Wareagle, It's neat that you've worked in Barry's Bay. I used to have a friend that had a cottage up there about fifteen years ago. Beautiful Country. On the bivalves, I usually just pluck a half pail or so of the regular species of mussels that live in the Ottawa River and then scrub them off pretty good and get a big pot with about a quart of water boiling in it. That way they get steamed, not boiled, so they retain more food value. Drop the mussels in for about 10 minutes or so until they all open and then de-shell them after they've had a chance to cool awhile so you don't burn your hands. Then I dice them all up and toss 'em in a frying pan with a little olive oil along with some cubed boiled potatoes for a bit, till it starts to brown a little. Next, slide it into a pot along with a can of Campbell's Cream of Mushroom Soup, about a cup of milk, half a can of cream corn, some parsley, chili powder, celery seed and a dash of garlic and black pepper and let it all simmer slowly untill you can't stand the super smell any longer. :) Then, have at it with a big chunk of fresh Bannock and a spoon! Mmmm, mussel and mushroom chowder, fit for a king...
