Tropical Storm/Hurricane Earl

Hurricane Danielle isn't making landfall, but it looks like Earl may give our friends in the Northeast US and Southeast Canada something to keep an eye on. Please be prepared and be careful. On the link below, you can click on the storm and it will give you the projected track. Keep in mind that projections change. Mother Nature has a way of making up her own mind as to what she wants to do.

Last week, the history channel repeated one of the programs about the effect of a hurricane on New York City, or really any other large city along the coast, and the results could really be bad if it is a major storm. I do realize they do dramatize things but they are bound to be close to correct.

I for one am watching this one.Use the link Crash posted and look at where Earl will be on Friday,then draw a straight line north.It looks like it could hit the RI/Mass line.Well if it does its going to get ugly quick over here.I have plans for a camping/astronomy trip next weekend.Im still packing for it but will be changing plans if need be.

Not sure if you haul off your limbs, cut them up to use, or city/county picks them up - but - around here so many people trim branches just before an approaching storm and then set debris piles at the curb to be picked up by the city. If they don't get to it before the storm, that debris piles becomes thousands of missile hazards.

I think I know what the problem is, Ken hasn't been on a lot in the last week or so, or so it seems to me, I think it's causing a low in Mass. and RI. Now if he was to get back on like in the past, It might cause a High, and push the storm out to sea. Just speculation.

I cut them up and add to the wood pile... where my wood pilE is and terrain around my house its not TOO much of a wOrry... plus they are some pretty big and heavy oak branches... much higher risk of them crashing thru my roof! My house has a full canopy cover.. Can't see it at all from above.. There's no way I even could get them all.. Only the dead ones..

During Gloria we were just outside the bad wind radius and were outside playing in the downpour. We lost power and dad hooked up his welder as a genny to keep the freezer cold. And to brew coffee.

Bob was just a windy rainy day.

I don't particularly care if a hurricane/emergency situation happens before winter sets in. I'm pretty set for that. It's when it happens in the cold and snow that it gets worrisome.

From a "customer out of power" respective, I'd rather it hit in the winter. I can still heat the house but the food keeps so much better in coolers in the garage then it does in this weather. As a lineman, this is a great time of year to get a big storm. The storm blows away and we can do the cleanup work in sunny weather.

"Dense and serious, a powerful vintage, as would be expected from Fonseca. The whole emphasis of the wine pushes the tannins forward, but this structure is based on black plums with dark fruit skins and a solid, chunky character. The finish is juicy and bold."

Of course there's Jack Daniels. Always a good choice.

I am here!!! At work, trying to quell a panic amongst the bean counters. You would think that the world is about to end!! My professional advice to them was to switch to decaf earlier :) At least as of now, it should only be a wind event and some tide (office is about a mile from the coast). But will watch, tomorrow will be decision time if I send the troops at home into upstate NY for a short vacation :). Probably not necessary, but will cover us if momma nature slips us a curve ball.

From the current projections (see link in post #1) it looks like it will skirt the east coast and be a direct hit on Nova Scotia. Of course, projections are just that - projections. Sometimes Mother Nature has her own way of thinking. Keep an eye on it, be prepared, and stay safe.

Nice. They just moved the projected track West. Some local forecasts now have the eye passing over Martha's Vineyard and Vineyard Sound. That's like, ah, 30 miles from here.

We're still at a tropical storm watch. That should be changing real soon.

I'll be going sailing early tomorrow morning with the doc next door. His 50' boat will be coming out of the water in New Bedford at 9:15 sharp. I picked up extra beer this morning. I'm all set now. :)

For you coastal folks....When one of these blows comes through the news always shows anchored boats bobbing around in roughs seas. Why don't folks take those boats out of the water or sail them some place safer? Is it just easier to let nature take it's course and collect the insurance money?

Some take them inland. Some take them out of the water. Tethering a boat with a double or triple anchor set on either the bow or the stern is actually a pretty good method if you are not able to get it out of harms way. It will swing with the tides/currents. Gotta keep the bilge pumps going though. I think that most of the damage happens to boats moored in marinas. The tide/waves compromise the sides since they often cannot keep up with the rising tides or get banged to death on the docks. Fenders will fail when they are bouncing around violently.

Depends on lots of things, Rick. Can they find a boat yard that can accomodate the boat and pull it out of the water in time? Is it trailored? Can it be trailered, or does it require an 18 wheeler or larger to move? Is it stored in drydock in winter? Are the owners local or are they away? Not every larger boat in the area can be pulled out of the water in two days. The boatyards just aren't equipped to do that. They usually take over a month to get 'em all in and take 'em all out.

Other owners HOPE that the storm will pass far off the coast. Remember, we still have two good months left in our season, and pulling a boat out and putting it back in ain't cheap. Heck, annual dock fees alone for some medium sized yachts can run well over $20K around here.

In many cases, unless the eye passes directly overhead, a boat can be fairly safe in a protected area or secured well to a sturdy dock. In other cases, a strong deep water mooring can be a better bet than risking having it topple over on dry land.

And yeah, some owners are just lazy and stupid. :sneaky2:

Now don"t ask me why, but my last minute hurricane preps included going out and buying a whole mess of cold cuts and bread. Like 12 pounds of meat and 6 assorted loaves. Maybe I was thinking of a hurricane party? :innocent:

So about an hour ago, I opened the fridge to get some cream for my coffee, and that damn hard salami started screaming out my name.

The result was a salami on wheat with mustard. :) Cucumber chips on the side.

And THEN the liverwurst got loud. I quieted it down by suffocating some between 2 slices of country white. :blushing: The dogs helped out with a few slices of that stuff.

And THEN the mortadella started making noise - 2 more slices of country white took care of that problem. :sneaky2:

Now, I think the ham is beginning to get anxious. Fear not! The light rye and havarti cheese is ready!

The turkey, roast beef, and proscuitto still seem pretty docile at the moment. The 12 grain probably scared off the turkey and roast beef, and that Italian stick bread and the sweet peppers seem to be holding the proscuitto at bay.

I may have to run back to the deli tonight. :innocent:

It looks like I am safe from Earl! We are likely to get a few inches of rain out of the storm but the wind will stay farther to the east. The coast will still have to deal with the wind but my plans for the weekend should be fine. Be safe, the rest of you still in the path!

Now, through the next few hours, are the worst for my area....and it ain't bad. The rain isn't very heavy, and the winds are about 25-35. Thunderstorms put up more of a fuss.

At the beach, they are having 60-70 mph winds. The 105 mph stuff is staying off shore. Good news, for sure.

Hopefully, brushing land like this will weaken the storm even more, so it's not so bad for you guys up north, that are going to get hit.
