Japan Surrenders!!!!!!

Today, August 14, marks the 65th anniversary of V-J Day. Today is the day that Japan unconditionally surrendered to Allied Forces in 1945.

Take a moment today and remember the thousands and thousands of men and women from around the world and all walks of life that helped achieve an end to hostilities.

A special thank you to our WWII vets for their sacrifice and service. God Bless.

Thanks for the reminder. I've got a few pictures that my dad took withe his Kodak Brownie camera taken on VJ Day in downtown Haifa.

A neighbour of my dads was a Chindit. He said some of the worst and dirtiest fighting he ever encountered was against the Japanese in the jungles of Indonesia. VJ day always seems to play second fiddle to VE day. It's good to have it remembered.

There was also a huge sigh of relief for the men that served in ETO. Those that didn't have enough points to go home were headed to the Pacific.

Those who opposed the use of the atomic bombs don't seem at all bothered with the fire bombing of Tokyo in February of 1945. Over 16 square miles of the city were laid to ashes with over 100,000 people being killed. It is estimated that immediate and long term exposure caused the deaths of between 90,000-160,000 in Hiroshima and between 60,000-80,000 in Nagasaki. The numbers can't be exact for obvious reasons.

Similar firebombing raids were conducted on Dresden, Germany destroying 15 square miles of city and killing approximately 25,000 people. Again in Hamburg with the loss of 50,000 and the bombing of Pforzheim killing 18,000.

Without the use of the atomic bombs, it is estimated that an invasion of the Japanese homeland would have resulted in over 1 million military and over 10 million civilian casualties. (Google Operation Downfall).

Facing those kinds of numbers, what would you (anyone) have done?

Wars are horrific and should be avoided at all costs. Once undertaken, wars are ended (won if you will) when the people no longer have the will for it to continue. As long as collateral damage is a bigger concern than ending the war, more and more lives are lost. The bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, while horrific, save countless allied lives.

I think the task we have today is to step back into our leaders shoes and examine the situation with the information they had at hand and try to make an honest decision on how to end the conflict. I happen to agree with Crash but one can only come to that conclusion looking at the information available at the time.

Taking it out of context and judging it by today's standard just won't work.

I don't want to bring up any thing else about this in a negative light out of respect for the folks who served and the reason we fought that war in the first place, so I'll just leave well enough alone and say I'm glad that those in power haven't resorted or had to resort to that since.

I think all of us agree with that. It's probably because of what they did that we are now able to see the terrible effects and understand the need to keep the genie in the bottle.

My comment wasn't aimed at you, by the way. The sentiment is pretty common and I've heard it more than once from Asians in particular. I once told an Asian gentleman that the next time his folks decided to draw a line in the sand as a challenge they should consider just how far across that line we were willing to travel to track him down and kick his butt. He's never brought up the subject again. Some folks just don't appreciate a good debate.

Being defeated by the U.S. has it's perks. We will rebuild your infrastructure, forgive your war crimes, garrison your country until you can do so yourself, then provide you with all the weapons and ammunition you can stand.

If I owned a country I think I'd declare war on the U.S. then we they show up to fight I'd have the "table of surrender" set up and the documents ready to sign. Just to save everyone a lot of trouble. Then wait for the money to start rolling in.

They also forget the continuious bombing of London for 5 years and the complete distruction of several British cities.

Our president also ignored this date of memory. He has already announced that he will have no part of a "victory in Afganistan that resembles what happened on the Missouri".

Hitler would not has hesitated for an instant if he had possessed nukes. London would have been vaporized and submarines would have been delivering nuke payloads to NY city and every other coastal port.

At least Truman had to think about it and did call a hault to the continued use during the Korean War.

How many of us would not be here today if our fathers/grandfathers had been killed during the Japaneese invasion. How we do take our own existance for granted!

We need to remember that we are not the bad guys, no matter what our own leaders tell us, and we still have enemies that want to distroy us collectively and individually.

There is always two sides to every fight. Those who fight and die and those who die as casualties of war usually have little to gain from the fighting and little to do with it being started.

My grandfather was a frogman, and one thing he did was blow up the reefs for the Marines to land at Okinawa. I don't know what would have happened if he had to help invade the main island.
