View Full Version : Critters to look out for?

What kind of critters do you have to watch out for where you live, in the woods or otherwise?
Here, it's pretty much just bees, wasps, maybe army ants and a spider or two. None are really deadly, or if they are you don't hear about them much.
As far as animals go there isn't much in lower michigan that could hurt you. maybe coyotes in a rare case, or a rabid coon or something, but nothing is above us on the food chain.
We don't have any water critters that can swim up your peehole, etc. and the only snake is the Missisauga rattler which is pretty rare now. People have been bit by northern pike, but that's rare too.
I have had close encounters with whitetail buck's in the rut which could have went bad, but that's pretty rare too.
Up north there are wolves, bears, maybe an elk or moose if your lucky.
When we lived in KY we had to always be aware of copperheads, rattlers and water moccasins. It seemed every thing contained them. The water moccasins would swim right in your boat and were real aggresive. Every spring we'd have a rattle snake round up of sorts, because they were thick like flies.
When my kid was in TX he had to go thru a ritual each day of shaking out boots, covers, etc. to make sure no scorpions or killer spiders decided to take up refuge, and they usually did. People were getting bit quite often as compared to here.
I've kinda let down my guard on the critters up here because they don't ever seem to bother you. What's it like in your neck of the woods?

Rick has a list of why he ain't coming to Florida.
We have mosquitoes
we have the things that swim in your body and kill you.
There are more shark attacks in Florida then any where else in the world.
We have the most lightning strikes in this half of the world.
alligators (10 states have alligators and only one other state has ever had a fatal attack. That state was GA and it was probably a Florida gator that did the killin. Every other fatal gator attack has happened in the state. )
crocodiles
spectacled caiman (nasty temper and bite)
panthers
bears
snakes (where I go is loaded with snakes. Some are deadly. You'll just have to tell me if you want to talk poisonous or not. You know, giant anaconda or python or would you rather talk the deadly coral snake, mean ole water moccasins, eastern diamondback rattlers, dusky pygmy rattlers) I didn't mention hoop snakes because of how flat it is down here. Oh, but I should add that we have so many exotics that you had better know the difference between a green rough snake and a green mamba or whack! You are dead!!! We have the copperhead and canebreak a little north of me in central Florida.
Giant carnivorous monitor lizards
Killer bees
Less than lethal bees
all the other flying stinging and biting insects that can exist.
Giant poisonous water bugs
Scorpions
Spiders (BIG!!! spiders!!!) then black widows, brown widows, brown recluse.
Wild hogs this big!!!
Coyotes and wolves
Skunk ape
The occasional rabid bobcat, fox or attack squirrel. Ever been attacked by a rabid flying squirrel? Didn't think so. Not, many people who have would still be around to tell about it.
Also, when you come down here in South Florida hold your breath as much as possible. It is well known that Florida has a higher than normal amount of dihydrogen monoxide in the air. Even in small amounts dihydrogen monoxide can kill if breathed into the lungs. Our beaches, lakes, rivers, and canals are filled with the stuff! :sneaky2:
That's about all for now. Cause I have to chase a Chuppacabra of the back patio...:innocent:

I'm probably more concerned about the antisocial two-legged critters than any of the rest.
True story. When I was about 18, I went fishing with a next door neighbor off of Warren's Point on the Rhode Island coast. The man, about 45 years old at the time, did a lot of commercial fishing as well as fishing for his freezers - alone - from a 23' open boat. We had landed over 600 lbs. of tautog (some folks call 'em "blackfish") using rod and reel and decided to do a bit of snorkling and spearfishing. Well, the swells were pretty nasty, over 6', and I was back on the boat in about 10 minutes, but he just kept on going. (I'm still impressed to this day.)
After he was in the water for about 30 minutes, he swam back toward the boat, and looked like he was having a problem. I was ready to go back in when he told me to stay in the boat. When he got back aboard, he was COVERED with Portuguese men of war and he must have been stung several hundred times.
I used a rag and pliers to pull most of the pieces off of him, and told him to relax while I brought the boat back to Westport. Hell no. He was doing the driving. We got the boat back on the trailer, drove back home, and filleted or cleaned all 600 lbs. of fish. He was still covered with tentacles and tiny bits of that damn man of war. When we were done cleaning the fish AND washing the boat, he asked his wife to pull out the tentacles (stingers) that he was still covered with.
To this day, I don't know if he had tremendous fortitude or was just crazy, but I don't think I could have done that. :innocent:

A girl got attacked by two and the association decided to kill em all. You'd try to launch your boat and about 5 or 10 would come running wings a flappin'. They're big too.

Black flies are rare over there Ken? That surprises me, they are terrible during the spring here. There isnt to many critters to watch for here. Coyote, skunk, porcupines..stuff like that. Moose can have a temper and I do keep my distance but they are pretty easy to spot and avoid. We do have the brown recluse spider and I think that the state is now willing to admit that there could be mountian lions and wolves here.

On land, just used to it. On the water, ALWAYS on the lookout.
And yeah, I've been the victim of a goose attack while fishing from shore. Smacked that thing with my fishing rod a dozen times before it gave up. Then, it stood about 50' away hissing at me for the next hour.

July, 1975. Lake Sebago. Four days of steady rain, black fly bites, wet sleeping bags, and not a single bite from any type of fish out there.
On the morning we broke camp, some kid started throwing rocks in the water right near where we were trying for salmon. I wanted to KILL HIM! :sneaky2: A while later, he comes back with a handline and some bread for bait and catches one awesome looking salmon in about 10 minutes. BREAD! Honestly, I see panthers frequently enough and they always leave. You can google video of panthers in South Florida and they ain't always in a hurry to go, But, they do leave. They are having pets taken now in Golden Glades estates and I hope that doesn't end up leading to a kid. But, so far I have never heard of a panther or bear attack in people in Florida.
Gators are a real threat and I just deal with that. Snakes just are and I deal with that.
On the jelly fish and man of war thing. I was snorkeling off of the reef in Fort Lauderdale and had expended my air about 20' down and started my ascent when I noticed I was under a swarm of jelly fish. I couldn't possibly swim out from under neath it. I tried, came up for air and then swam like nobodies business. I thought I made it till I came out of the water. I was stung all over my body. Just watched the welts rise and the pain rose with it.
I think Rick has a list of things that I need to look out for.
You want it alphabetically or numerically?
We really don't have anything to be afraid of. Poisonous snakes but the chance encounter is pretty rare even in rocky areas around here. Use some common sense and leave them alone and they don't bother you. Rabbits and squirrels raiding the garden and the bird feeders is about the most fearsome things.

Well I have lived in Ga., Fla., N.C.,Tn., and Ky.I have swam in places that had 'Gators, snakes, ticks, Bobcat,Bear, etc..... I have been within feet of a black bear and Bobcat, Stepped ON 3 different kinds of poisonous snakes:oops:, but the most Dangerous encounter was with an 8 point Buck whitetail Deer. If I hadn't grabbed his antlers I would have been gored for sure. After that I put a tree between us and kept behind it. If you check statistics, Deer kill more people than any other mammal in North America. That is one statistic I believe wholeheartedly... Just from my own limited experiences.
Oh about the Snakes I stepped on...... Ever seen the old Snagglepuss cartoon? I don't have a clue how I did it, but I did a perfect imitation of him jumping up in the air and exiting stage left or right..... I honestly believe all 3 were asleep when stepped on. Somebody on a local forum just posted another trail cam pic of a panther, moutain lion/ cougar, etc. in Michigan. It happens every year and they always turn out to be a black cat, or taken from some other part of the world. Supposedly this one's real.
I've come close to being bit by a michigan rattler hunting mushrooms. They seem to like the same places shrooms do. I actually brought a snake in the house which was balled up and hid inside a hen of the woods mushroom. I had it in a paper bag, reach inside to pull it out on the kitchen counter and felt something wiggling. I think if I was hunting shrooms in Florida or Georgia, australia, etc. I'd already be dead.

I believe the whitetail is the wild mammal responsible for more deaths in humans because of impacts with cars. I know that the mammal responsible for the most attacks on humans is the domesticated dog. Though this statistic may have gone down since more and more leash laws have gone into affect.
I stepped on a water moccasin once. I was fishing a lake from the bank. There was tall grass all around the area I was walking. The moccasin was trying to get into the safety of water and ended up slithering right into my path. At least that is the way I reason it to have happened. I ended up stepping on it and when it turned to bite it got caught in the grass. Which stopped it from hitting me.
I thought it was a close call then. But, I had my Rancher boots on and there isn't a single snake in North America that can bite through a pair of leather boots. Had a couple other close encounters with big cotton mouths. But, that was the biggest Oh shift moment with snakes.

Do the water moccasins tend to slither off if you give em warning or do they stand their ground, or come at you?

They usually will slither off. I have had a couple of weird encounters. One time when I was fishing from the bank. I looked down and one was part way out of the water a few feet from my foot. He was just staring at me. I poked him with my fishing pole and he went back in the water.
Another time we were fishing from my jon boat with only a trolling motor. The battery died and so we started dragging the boat from shore. While one of us held the boat off of the bank with the one oar we had. As we got to a tree that blocked us we would pass the rope around to the other guy and switch positions. My friend reached around with the rope and I walked around to grab it. He says, "That looks real." I look down to see a big water moccasin stretched out right by my foot. I moved back and the snake turned and went into the water.
Why someone would think a snake by the bank of a lake was a fake one, I don't know. But, he's from New Jersey if that explains anything. LOL
In Big Cypress water moccasins are everywhere. Wear boots and watch where you put your hands. We run into them on the trail all the time and they will strike our vehicles when we run by them. Can't really blame them.
This one hit the footrest just as they came around the curve. Right where her foot was.

I love when he says this is the savage wild. That's how people react when we take them out there. Sometimes we forget that so many people never get to see this part of South Florida and we'll say we didn't really see anything this trip. They always ask if we are kidding them, cause they saw things that they never thought they would see that close and wild.

It's the things that you can't see that are the most dangerous. Red bugs, mosquitos, moccasins, rattlers, gators if you're near the swamps. I've been chased out of the water by moccasins before.. not a fun feeling. Chased out of a pond a few weeks ago by a gator that was at least 15 feet long.. every time he went under, he'd come up closer to our 10' john boat, and parallel with it like he was sizing us up to see if he could take us. We left!
I've had a huge bobcat, or cougar or something like that come real close to me in the woods while hunting a bottom near a creek this past season. Still not as dangerous as that cottonmouth that you DIDN'T see.
A walking stick is a necessity around here. any old stick will do, but should be strong enough to bash the low-growth brush where the snakes are hiding. Much easier to see when they are moving...

I was tracking a deer a couple years back. It was a not so good shot, no fault of my own, and the deer ran far thru the woods, a field, two swamps, and two thickets. I tracked it about 1/4 mile until it was midnight and as I moved I could hear something following me. I decided to leave and come back in the morning with light so I could see. At 6 or 7 in the morning I found the doe and it had been caught up to by some yotes.
I had to wonder if it was the yotes I heard and maybe we were both on the same trail. It was a real eerie feeling because I was pretty much crawling on my belly and such thru the sticks the night before, with no gun, just a maglite and my Buck knife.

in houghton all we have to worry about are skunks, black flys(in the summer), ticks, chinnese foriegn exchange students who pick up the skunks thinking they are cats, and i guess you really dont want to get too close to porcupines.

Death from water moccasin bites is almost non-existent. A fraction of percent. That is with no treatment at all. Add that to the FACT that they are not the aggressive snake everyone makes them out to be.
Here is a recent study that I thought I posted earlier. It is only 2 1/2 pages of easy reading.

Justin you forgot about the Black bears, They just removed one from a tree in Sierra Vista and AZ Wildlife had to kill one By Parker Canyon lake that was too aggressive.

Man, I just got bit by a tick the other day while camping. My first time ever. I was in pretty heavily wooded area and camped there for the night. The next morning I'm stractching my shoulder area and I feel something. I though it was like a mole or something. Then I look and this bug with 8 legs is attached to my arm. I try to flick it off and he aint comng off. I grap a pen and he still aint coming. I get a piece of paper and try to brush him off and he's still there moving its legs all about. And at first I didn't know it was a tick. It was about the size of my pinkie fingernail. So I get a paper towel, grab it by the body, and yanked him out. I'm kept him in a plastic bag at first so I could find out what it was. I talked to frined and she said it was most likely a tick So I looked it up on the internet and sure enough it was.

Make sure you didn't break his tiny head off in your arm, That could be VERY bad !

I live in the Mid-west, also known as "Wood-Tick central." As an avid camper you should already know what I'm about to tell you but I'll post it just in case you don't:
1.) NEVER, & I MEAN NEVER, EVER PULL ON A TICK TO REMOVE THEM! Doing so will probably leave the head embedded in your skin,, which can lead to #2.
2.) Ticks can carry Lyme disease. Here's the Web-Site for the Califiornia Lyme Disease Association: http://www.lymedisease.org/
3.) Remove ticks by swabbing rubbing alcohol on their backside, this will cause them to "back out" so you can safely remove them. Ticks are usually flat; it's been said that you can actually turn them over while their walking & they never lose stride. So stomping on them usually doesn't kill them. Burning them alive is the best bet.
4.) While camping out be sure and use a strong, effective Insect Repellent" like "Deep-Woods Off" or the like. Spray it around your ankles & on your wrist & arms. Wear long sleeves and wrap duct-tape around the ankles of your pants. Finally wear either a hat or a bandanna around your head to keep them from dropping on you from above from tree limbs & such.
5.) If camping with others You all should check each other for ticks prior to going to turning in. Using a flashlight, you each strip down to your skivvies and check every area you can see yourselves, then check each other where you & they can't see, like your back, ect.. (Note: This can be a lot of fun if you have women along!)
Nest time be more careful. :cool2:

Okay, that's why you didn't know about ticks. I don't view you as an intermediate camper, but a beginner with some experience camping and a lot of luck! If you're camping solo you're running a big risk. You've mentioned both Les S. & Dick P.; but does the name Chris McCandless or Alexander Supertramp mean anything to you? How about the book "Into The Wild" by Jon Krakauer? I highly recommend you read that before setting out on your own into the Wilderness. I also recommend Cory Lundin's book on survival: "98.6 Degrees: The Art of Keeping Your A$$ Alive!" You can view some of Cody's survival knowledge on Discovery's "Dual Survival." Godd luck in your endeavors. :cool2:

I must respectfully disagree with using alcohol to remove ticks. Here's why - As you said, never grab the body and pull. While it is true that it can leave the head embedded in your skin, more importantly, squeezing the tick can cause the "bad stuff" on the inside of the tick to forcefully be injected into you. Using alcohol can cause a similar reaction. The best method for removing a feeding tick is to use a tick removal tool or pair of tweezers that come to a point. Grab the tick by the head (not the body) as close to the skin as possible and then pull it straight out. This method minimizes the transfer of "stuff" from the tick to you.

I know that the alcohol thing has been around for quite a while, but what happens is that it irritates the tick and it may regurgitate back into the puncture wound. Another method you see a lot is using soapy water. That smothers the tick and can cause the same reaction as alcohol. Sometimes those methods will work, but sometimes they won't. Tweezers work every time.

And then disinfect the daylights out of the bite area. Scrub with a medicated cleanser (like Phisohex or Hibiclens) and then pour some alcohol over the area (it won't hurt ya' none) and then a bit of bleach (yeah', some folks say not to do this, but I do it) and then paint it with iodine or merthiolate.
Why?

Hey, I didn't get a tick on me until two years ago and I've been hunting and stuff for nearly 40 years now. Makes me wonder if I just never noticed them before.
if you head west and north of here there is a line that the ticks don't seem to cross. In fact, it's a road to the west. Really strange actually. Hike on this side of road, no ticks, cross the road and you are covered.
I went for a two hour hike in Ionia, MI. and when I got back I had so many ticks on me I couldn't count them. makes me think of these primitive late fall shelters that use debris. Man, you'd wake up dead if you did that here unless the ticks are dormant or something.
I'm sure it's already been mentioned, but, when removing ticks it's best to use tweezers and grab em as close to the head as possible without squeezing the body and slowly pull straight away. If you're not careful you'll squeeze the toxins right into you or break off the sucker inside you.
Any other method can irritate the tick and cause him to re-gurgitate his toxins inside you.
BTW! down in KY, when I was young, the ticks would kill dogs. You'd see a dog come down outta the hills and he'd be looking like something out of a horror movie. Head to toe ticks, in the eyes and everywhere, skinny as a bone, greusome sight.

My brother is a tick magnet. LOL We couldn't get a tick to come loose and so we asked if anybody knew a way. It worked like a charm.
Anyhow, I had ticks on me as a kid. But, every tick I have found as an adult was crawling and not embedded. My brother though can walk through the exact same field and have 2 or 3!

Luckily ticks are not bad in my area yet.
I did have a friend that got lyme disease though.
He was the unluckiest sob around, he also got trichinosis from bear meat.
I have heard though that the ticks are getting more plentiful up here as the whitetail deer become more numerous.
