View Full Version : the colony season 2/ any ideas about urban survival

so there was a show on the discovery channel last summer called the colony. i dont know if any of you watched it. i thought it wasnt too bad. it was interesting what they built with the supplies they had, it just would have been better if you didnt have to hear them talk. well i guess they are doing a second season of it and i was wondering what your thoughts were on the subject. the stuff people figure out how to build out of junk laying around is kind of interesting to me, like the water filter they built, the wood gasifier, and even the ozone creating device or whatever it was(wasnt really paying attention on that episode) it kind of reminded me of junkyard wars in a way. like i said before, the only bad thing about that show was the stupid drama. so talking about the very little, actually valid, info from the show what kind of things do you think a person should know about for urban survival? cause lets face it, its a different game than wilderness survival, and the average person is most likely going to be in an urban area should all hell break loose and society colapses.

I think basic mechanical/ electrical knowledge would be a big plus. Other than that, just being able to protect yourself from/ or work with people would be my biggest concern.
There's plenty of urban resources here, but unless you can re-wire , re-tool, or re-build it may be of no use. Simply being able to look at a given object and think of alternate uses would be a big plus. If you can't get along with others or organize a defense, etc. it would be a tough road as well.

While some of the things they built were cool, I didn't care for the show because of all of the drama that you mentioned. It seemed to be more like a bunch of out of work Hollywood actors auditioning for a role in the next B movie. I doubt I'll watch version 2.0.

I enjoyed the show. The drama did get on my nerves. But I think it demonstrated the toll that poor nutrition, lack of sleep, and stress can have on relationships -- a factor that's often not discussed, in survival.
The two things that did annoy me about the show was how they were how to magically find everything they needed in the warehouse. "Joe happened to find an espresso maker, a tesla coil, and an entire chemistry set in the warehouse!"
The other thing was that the group had just the right skillset for optimum survival. There's a mechanic, a doctor, a self-defense instructor, an engineer, etc etc. I want to see them do it with a salesman, an IT geek, a bike messenger, and a stay at home mom.

the dude with the white hair saved all their butts in my eyes, if you have someone with those skills it would help, but put in folks that have no prior experience and would make it interesting, thats the only ting about les strouds show is that he tried to say he was doing it as the average outdoorsman when if fact he had a tremendous amount of survival traiining already, same with this show, advertise it as a reality show and watch all the barbies and ken doll show up then whammo survival time, now that i would watch

I saw the line up for season 2 , an artist, a model, a professor, a retired contractor, a carpenter, auto mechanic, construction foreman. I watched the first episode and I'm going to say the Drama is going to be just as bad as season 1 .

I didn't watch last season, but I did catch the first one this season. I figured if nothing else, I might learn a new trick or two. I do not plan on being anywhere urban, but who knows. Besides it was entertaining.

I know some stay at home moms that can fix the diswasher, can a bushel of tomatoes, shop for groceries with 4 kids in tow, fix a flat, clean the house, wash 4 loads of clothes, cook dinner and still expect some attention when the kids go to bed.
They would consider The Colony a vacation.

I didn't watch the first season, but I'd see a commercial every once in a while, and I've seen the commercials for this season. I have an idea that really has become more of a lifestyle and mindset, rather than a practice.
Everything you see is a resource. Look out your window, and see what you see.
I see all sorts of things in my neighborhood, driving down the road, walking in the woods... Let me say it again; Everything IS a resource.
It's up to you to use it to make your life more comfortable.
My reckoning for all of those resources is made by assuming that, just like the colony, there is no power grid, the stores are all closed, and help is not coming. Power tools are really handy and efficient when the power is on... Retooling should be a basic reasoning skill. I think when I was in school, it was called "creative thinking" or "creative problem solving".

For the record. My old babysitter was a stay at home mom and she did pretty much everything TJ couldn't do because he was out working. Of course, things are different today. Most women don't work on tractors, or sew, or change tires or...
There's some ladies on here that are due the respect they deserve. My grandma was hard as nails in her prime. She'd work right beside my grandad roofing, then come home and do all the indoor family stuff. Some of the ladies here have that kind of mettle.. Most of the primped and pretty ladies I see up town aren't quite that tough. I guess "they don't build 'em like they used to"!

Another idea came to me. thought it might be worth sharing here.

If you have bones and an airtight container (ever make char cloth?) you can probably make bone-char of enough quality to filter contaminated water, then boil it to kill pathogens. Hey, if it'll keep fish alive, maybe it'll work for people?
just an idea. Might have some practicality in an urban setting. Like I said, everything IS a resource!

i was thinking about something earlier that has to do with water collection. you have seen a dehumidifier before right? well i was thinking that if you happen to have some source of electricity, like a gas generator, that might be a good way to get water straight from the air around you, just cause they pull the water out of the air and then drop it into a collection tank. usually people just drain the tank every time its full, but I'm wondering if that would be safe to drink if you had to.

When I worked at the factory, the machine I ran used what we called and "air dryer" I guess it was the same thing. You wouldn't have to worry as much about heavy metals in the water, but I'd still want something to clean it of airborn baddies that might collect in there too.
Great idea for a collection method!
YCC - I had never heard of "Bone Black" before so it was interesting reading. I also saw Dirty Jobs is doing (has done?) a show on Bone Black. I guess Mike is working in one.
The dehumidifier idea is a good one, I think. I'd still boil the water or otherwise treat it, too. For the reason YCC said.

After working on quite a few dehumidifiers, mostly having to clean them.
It's true that water comes from the air, but the air is passed over a set of coils, so it sorta concentrates any dirt and dust that is in the air onto those coils.
Pretty nasty stuff, disinfectant is sold just to cut down on the nasties in that water.
I would consider it a collection idea, but would both filter and boil any water collected.

I didn't watch it last year, but did catch the first episode of season two.
It would be easy to pick it apart, but it was entertaining, as the "experts" tried to explain the dynamics of the group and outside interferences of being "raided" and such.
Take it for what it's worth, a TV program, I guess I would perfer it over "Dancing w/ the Has-Beens.

My cable service has movies on demand and on the discovery channel they ran all of last seasons episodes, so I watched them. Well it was entertaing to say the least.

Re Urban Survival: I live in the pacific NW on the coast. Around here the chance of a quake followed by tsaunami is getting a lot of play. At first I was thinking about a bug out box for my truck. Then it dawned on me. There will be nowhere to go. The bridges will be down, there will be no electricity, no running water. For an extended period of time. I will not count on the authorities to save my butt. Case in point, Katrina and any number of disasters before and since. So I have a new way of thinking. That is stay in place survival. My house is a one story ranch with plenty of storage space and a fenced backyard. My plannow involves stocking plenty of food, H2O, emergency lighting, some basic meds and of course my weapons to keep undesirable, unprepared idiots away. What I lack here is a network of like minded folks, even a few, probably better a few. My general lifestyle is basically me and the dogs. So I am trying to be and remain selfsufficient and a burden to noone.
When I began stocking supplies I made the mistake of filling a freezer. Bad move. Dry and canned are a much better idea.
Also I began buying those small throw away propane tanks for the coleman. Not good either. A stove that uses good ole coleman white gas makes more sense. So that's where I stand on the survival issue. As long as a 9.9 quake doesn't drop my roof on my head I think I can do this. Any ideas out there?

Winnie, it is my understanding that Bone Black IS the activated charcoal used in aquariums as a filter. It was the original activated charcoal until other means were developed.

LJ There are others here who don't have a network of likeminded folk to band together. I include myself in this. In the UK people do not prep at all. So I am a group of one too. Because of this I have great difficulty aquiring stores(I've got very creative).

LJ, do you have a generator and fuel to keep your freezer going if/when the power goes down?

First off how high up is your place? ie are you going to be swamped when thr tsunami rolls in? Are you on any kind of main throughfare? If you are, all those getting out of dodge are going to wind up on your door step. As to cooking and heating, got any timber on your property? get a wood burning stove. Water, always the main proplem, how much and how are you storing it? Do you have rain catches to funnel rain water into your storage barrels? Do you have a congency plan if the the house is destroyed? just some points to ponder. welcome to my world
