View Full Version : Best companion breed? (Dogs)

I am looking around at the different breeds of dog. I was wondering what your opinions are on the best dog to fit my requirements.

The companion must:

1) Be trainable to perform obedience tasks. (High intelligence)

2) Short cut hair, low maintenance, and minimum shedding.

3) Be good with children.

4) Good guard dog.

I am looking for a breed that will be warm and comfortable with my family, while firm at executing commands. The intentions for the companion are to be a family dog but mostly an outdoors dog. I am looking for a dog that I will be able to take out into the woods, and stay by my side unless instructed to do otherwise. (Maybe the possibility to stay without a leash at night?)

The three types of companions that I am looking at are: Doberman Pinscher, Boxer, and even though they do have longer (more maintenance) hair; the German Shepherd.

Obviously some of the requirements can be bent, if the other aspects of the companion are more worth while (like the intelligence, obedience, and companionship of the German Shepherd overwhelms the seasonal hair).

What do you all think? Any experiences with good trained dogs, for the outdoors?

Get a young Pit bull, they are wonderful dogs, very smart and loving, I have had two , They are not naturally mean, you can train them easily to be whatever you want them to be,

Good point. I think the Boxer might be the only option left out of the breeds you listed after a talk with them.

How about a Bouvier? A friend of mine had one and you couldn't get a more faithful, protective animal IMO. They can grow to an impressive size, if that's not an issue. And they do have to be sheared. This one had his hair cut shorter than 'show normal' so he didn't always have to be brushed, but left with bushy eyebrows and a beard. There is something oddly scary about a dog when you can't see his eyes.

But they're really smart. They are herders so they can be taught commands easily. At least this one could. And he protected the kids especially. I would NOT want to be facing the toothy end of that dog, ever.

There's a lot to be said for that one. A poodle meets your requirements.

Quite honestly, every poodle I've ever had has been about the dumbest dog I ever had. We had 3 poodles over the span of several years when I was growing up. And there was never a protective streak in them. At all.

Aren't hounds prone to running off to "hunt"? I was interested in them because of the training. I have read that they must be tied up to prevent that.

My Bassett hound doesnt need to be tied and will stick around as long as I am out with her but she was a lot of work to train. Hounds are very sweet and loving but they are stubborn, hard headed little donkeys.

check out wikipedia, but you might be right about the wondering off thing. im pretty sure that they will always come back because of the love of family that these dogs have. they are one of my personal favorite breeds. right up there with labs and brittanys.

They are great dogs, pretty much herd instinctively, although can do damage to livestock that try to buck their authority,a friend has them in his goat herd, and they have shredded the ears on goats not following the dogs rules.

My favorite hiking partner is ,my border collie - lab mix, Gus. ..
While an excellent family dog... He's not the most intimdating pooch on the block.. He is extremly smart , follows commands perfectly, and always stays with me in the woods...
My other dog is more the intimidator.. Also a good family dog but not quite as smart and no-where near as good offleash.. She is a great pyrenise aussie Shepard mix..

I think with patience and training any breed is capable of being a great dog.
It is worth lookin into the insurance, as many companies limit certain breeds allowed for coverage.

I've had 2 dogs. A collie/samoyed mix, lots of grooming, no health issues, but not really the smartest. He lived 16 years. My second is a german shepherd dog. Even though he is short haired he still sheds. Very easy to groom. Since I live in the city I was aprehensive about him getting out and biting someone. But I don't think I could get him to bite someone. He is alot smarter than I am. If you go with a GSD check out the parents make sure they DO NOT have highly angled back legs, this is asking for hip probs. He turned 9 in May and so far no probs. On doby vs.boxer, I'd go doby unless you want slober all over everything.

The best dog I ever had that met your requirements was a female blue chow. Although she was a terrible swimmer, she sure did like the water.

Chows require alot of training and socializing.

If I was going to get another dog for family and woods, I think I would have to go with a female lab/rotty mix. Jessica our rotty/lab is just awsome, but alas she has gotten old. She no longer likes to chase hogs in the woods across the street.

On second thought, a boxer/weiner dog is a great woods dog, not much with kids though.

You can always go for the lab or a ches. bay retriever aka lab on steroids.

If you like to run, a rhodesian ridgeback would be my choice.

Maybe a smooth chow or a short hair akita.

I think it's time to get another dog as I am putting in a doggy door this weekend. We'll probably get some rat like mouthy purse dog that makes too much noise if it's up to the wife and kids.

I don't think that I expect the companion to be intimidating, but alert and will announce if something is out of the ordinary. My worst fear is that something (or someone) will approach me in the night, by myself in the woods, with the intent to harm.

What got me on this topic was one of my friends, that lived in the woods for a few months (not off the land, just didn't have any other place to stay). He had a dog that would stay with him at all times. It was very loyal and loving. It would follow him everywhere and while in the woods it would not go more than 20'ish feet away (even at night).

Some of the upcoming trips that I take, will be by myself for a night or two. So I want a loyal companion that will aid in company, and alertness; while following the training which will be given. I wouldn't want the dog to go after the threat, so I would need it to "stay" or "RUN" haha.

Any dog without mental issues can be trained for basic obedience, but it takes time and patience and is an ongoing process.

I'd agree with a lab too, was my first thought, although some shed pretty bad, especially the longer haired varieties. Especially where kids are involved, I'd shy away from any dog that has a history of being trained for fighting, defense, or attacking people, etc. German sheppard, pincer, boxer, pit bull, chow, rot, They're great dogs and don't deserve the rep some get, but they are what they are.

The thing to keep in mind is even though you can train a dog to do well with kids and such the kids may accidentally provoke it. Happens all the time.

The smartest two dogs I ever knew were police trained black lab and a dob. The black lab was a shorthair like the one owl girl posted and it didn't shed too bad. My uncle's wife had a white sofa and she wasn't complaining.

Also, stay away from herding type dogs. I'd stay away from "most" hunting type dogs too, because, unless you hunt them or run them a lot they can get bored and start chewing up furniture, etc. or just go stir crazy. They generally are not meant to be indoors either. They need room to move.

I think the poodle was a good recommendation, but they can be a little antsy. They make a great hunting dog, except for all the burs that get in their fur, and are very smart and easily trained too. They don't shed much if at all! My uncle had a mini chocolate and it was one of the coolest dogs I ever met. Changed my whole viewpoint of poodles. Extremely obedient and my uncle had it trained well to say the least. Thier fur requires maintenance though.

Most people get dogs based on sterotypes and what they think is cool or cute. I applaud you for taking the time to research it out first.

I applaud you for taking the time to research it out first.

Well, I (my family growing up) have had many types of dogs before - but almost all has been a mixed breed. Most of them have not properly been trained either, so I can't use them as a reference. I want this next companion to be properly trained, to make things easier.

I will more than likely go through a dog rescue service, for a specific type of dog breed, after I have decided which would be best for us. At the moment, I believe that a lab may just be in our best interest. I would love to hear from people with well trained Doberman Pinscher(s) though, on their thoughts. (It's one thing to know someone with one, but another to have one raised and trained by you instead.)

Another thing that I was wondering, was if an adult dog is still trainable? If so, how much more difficult is it to train a dog as an adult, lets say 2-3 years old? It is much more realistic that I would be able to rescue an older dog, instead of a puppy. (No one ever gets rid of puppies, unless selling them! lol)

I prefer to train dumb dogs. Smarter dogs are easily distracted and often smarter than me. I like Dobermans and they are highly intellegent but you have to spend a lot of time with them.

Rick
07-16-2010, 07:55 PM
Just about any dog is trainable. Once he understands who the Alpha is then he will do just about whatever you want to please you. The thing I have found with older dogs, especially large ones, is they really try to show dominance over kids, especially young/small kids. I gave up a collie for that very reason. He wouldn't try to hurt them but he had no problem knocking them down and standing over them. He got once but the second time cost him a home.

Labs are great, but beware -- as puppies they are INSANE. HUGE amounts of energy (and this stage lasts 2 years or so!) but are WONDERFUL dogs if you can work the energy out of 'em. My wife and I had two of them - learned a valuable life lesson: NEVER get two lab puppies at the same time if you can help it. They feed off each other's energy and become NUTS. It's fun, but gets tiresome if they don't fit your lifestyle real well.

My dog is a Lab/Malamute/Timber wolf mix - Kaya is wonderful. Loyal to a fault (is never more than 10-20 feet from me), she's laying at my feet right now. Has some interesting personality characteristics, but overall a good mix.

When you look for a dog, you just *know* when the right one has found you. The human/dog bond is very much a cool bond to experience!

PS: Rick is right -- becoming your dog's leader/alpha is of the utmost importance to ensure a happy dog and happy owner. It's the little things -- don't let them through doors or up/down stairs ahead of you, don't let 'em pull on the leash, hand feed to establish pack order etc etc. Some fascinating web sites out there that discuss this kind of thing.

Best of luck finding a pooch - throw a photo up when you do!

I was attacked by a german sheppard as a kid while delivering cub scout fund raising stuff to customers. The dog chowed on me as soon as the kid opened the door while the dad sat in his car leaving for work watching the whole thing. The dog was very well trained and real good with their kids, but it was trained for defense and saw me as a threat. I got mauled and it got put down, the homeowner was out money for all of it. Everyone lost on that deal.

I like german sheppards, just don't think their the best to keep around the house or where kids or unsuspecting folks might wander into their zone unless they are watched very well.

I would highly recommend a lab. I have had a Chocolate lab since he was a pup, only 2 years old now. He is definitely full of energy, all the time. I crate trained him because labs get bored and eat things once all the toys are destroyed, like 3 wallets, the mail, magazines, CDs, 2 remotes, countless cat toys, the wife's sheep hide slippers, ect... All casualties were really my fault since I left it low enough for him to get to it all and only ever did while we were asleep or gone. 2 years later, he is left out of the crate at night and does just fine. The first time I took him to the woods he was on a leash, since then hes had no leash even when I am hiking trails. He stays close to camp or walks with me when I am moving around. He went hunting with me a few times and picked up retrieving birds with very little training and is not gun shy at all. We don't have any kids, but I was rough with him and dominate when he was younger and now pays my buddys kids no mind when we are at their house. The 8 year old rough houses with him, the 3 year old tries to ride him like a horse (never works), and the 1 year old uses him as a pillow or step stool for the couch and whatever else he sleeping in front of. He is really smart and very protective of my wife while I am gone, very strange how they pick up things like that. He isn't aggressive so to speak but has a good solid bark when people come to the door. He is relatively short haired and we give him a bath every month so the hair has never been a problem. The greatest thing he is always happy to see you whether you just got home or walked into a different room. Well this has been my experience with a lab and hope it helps you in your search.

all big dogs have the potential to do major damage or kill. there is no way to tell which dog breed is most statistically likely to bite since this would depend on the percentage of how many of each breeds there is. the more common the breed the more likely it is to have a high level of bite reports. i was bitten by a husky as a kid, i know people bitten by labs, ive met a few highly aggressive golden retrievers, ive been around many german Shepherd and i really dont think there anymore aggressive then any other dog breed, there history is that of a shepherd, thats what they were made for, not attacking people. people use them at guard dogs cuz they are trainable and powerful, not cuz they are viscous. if you take a labs and train it as a guard dog thats what it becomes also. they are trained to be guard dogs, not they are guard dogs cuz they are vicious

Best dog I ever had, and one that meets all you requirements, was an Australian Blue Heeler.

Not telling this story to discourage you. The 5 Australian Blue Heelers I've encountered in my life were very exceptional dogs. That being said...

My wife's mom has 2 Australian Blue Heelers. The are very smart dogs. However, the big one, Sydney (or Kujo) was born deaf. She loves her masters, my wife, a couple of the neighbors. Anybody who was not introduced to her life when she was a pup, however, she bares her teeth and will lunge if you are not careful.

They did a good job of teaching her commands with sign language, but for some reason, she never adjusted to newcomers.

The other dog is the sweetest thing in the world. Lots of energy, loves to play fetch, and will lick you to death.

maybe because of he deafness she is super sensitive to body language. and has become fearful cause most people didnt pay attention to their body language when they approached here when she was a pup. like shy dogs dont like when you try to pet them overhand the first time you meat them.

that one theory anyways. ive worked with a few fearful dogs kinda like that. it is usually workable. though im not that experienced with it but i have succeeded when i tried so i know it can be done. maybe you should talk to a anamal behaviorist.
