One of the thing about having health issues and bad body parts is the increased sense of sincere enjoyment on those days when everything feels good. I hadnt beeen hiking in 6 primarily due to a partially torn achilles tendon, but normally even when nothing is broken, Im still in pain from other issues. Over the last 24 years Ive learned to block the pain from my mind or just ignore it and push on. Every time a doctor tells me I cant do something, I do it, even if eventually over the long term physics overcome willpower. Today was one of those wonderful days when nothing hurt (having Jackson here to lend a hand and carry all my stuff helped too!). I woke up at 4:45 am and Jackson and I headed off to the trails...not a soul was there, we got on the trail at sunrise...it was the best morning in a very long time.

I got to test out a new pair of hiking boots that I had been breaking in and it turns out they were horrible on wet surfaces, they are going back to REI.

The water level is very low in summer allowing us to go places we cant go in fall and are solid ice in winter. Most of these photos are taken in areas where you would be swept away or drowned in other months which was a neat experience.

His fancy new working dog collar. Hopefully it helps us from getting stopped both on trails where dogs normally are not allowed and in towns other than ours where everyone knows us

He is a good boy. He is from a long line of working mountain mutts, no show dogs here...if he doesnt work he goes gets bored and starts to pout. I honestly dont know what Id do without him...cant remember life before him and its only been about 9 months. That goofy dog keeps me laughing constantly, most loyal companion I could ever imagine.

"So, Jackson, you and the master went for a hike?"

"Yea, Spot, masters are so funny. All I have to do is sit down on a rock and he runs out into the water and starts taking pictures. Splashing around and gettin' all wet."

"(Snicker) I know, I know. Mine does the same thing. Masters are so goofy."

"Yeah, but we love 'em. What are you gonna do? (dog shrug)

Glad you enjoyed the day. Looks like you had great weather for it.

Jackson doesnt normally run...he meanders or trots. I really want to go hiking again this week since Im off of work, but my new boots wont be here until next week :( Im bummed.

So to explain Jackson's energy level here are two videos...I let him be a dog rather than working this last weekend when visiting my parents(which made him REALLY not want to work on Monday...a whole other story). He will only run if being chased or chasing something:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-l4nf8v5z7w

This is his normal energy level lol:

He has dehydrated dog food and treats that he carries, very light and easily packed.

And no, I dont permit him to read such things! he is only 2.5 years old lol.

Was yours a total loss? When I submerged mine I kept thinking "maybe its not that bad" and then Id look through the foggy water logged lense and think...maybe its just glare lmao. The camera did dry out eventually, but its a really easy to use point and shoot and Id hate to make my wife learn how to use a new camera, so Im getting one of those waterproof ones.

Im getting a panasonic dmc-ts2 shock/mud/water resistant camera. Im too wet far too often, plus my current camera kept freezing in the winter. Although this only goes down to 14 degrees, so I dont know how much of a help it will be in the winter.

Used to work in the Altoona area years back. Found alot of really nice places to go for hikes on the weekends north of there. Never had a buddy like Jackson to share those times with though.( He is a great Pyr isn't he?) They can become the best of buddies. Pyrs become very attached to their owners. Not sure they know who owns who sometimes.:>)

Ive been to Altoona once or twice, but never really explored there. So far I havent gotten bored of my waterfall trail. I really thought I would, but every time is like the first time all over again. He is actually a Pyr mix, but he is mixed with another dog that looks very similar to a pyr (an akbash), so its hard to tell that he isnt pure bred other than him being a bit thinner and lighter weight than a full bred. He is great. He knows Im the Alpha, so he never tries to pull rank on me...but he will guilt trip the crap out of me to get his way. He is smart and he knows the expressions and looks that make me putty in his paws.

He is a neat dog, almost all of his communication is non verbal, so its been a learning curve for me. Couldnt have asked for a better dog though, he really helps me out and is just the best.

JC, if you haven't read this book I highly recommend it.
It's called Merle's Door by Ted Kerasote.

"Merle and Ted found each other in the Utah desert. Merle was about ten months old, surviving on his own, and looking for a human to hang his heart on. Ted was forty-one, liked to write about animals, and had been searching for a pup whom he could shape into a companion. The training went both ways. Ted showed Merle how to live around wildlife, and Merle reshaped Ted's ideas about the complexity of a dog's mind, showing him how a dog's intelligence could be expanded by allowing it to make more of its own decisions.
Funny, fascinating, and tender, Merle's Door is a moving love story that reveals how the partnership between dogs and humans can become far more than we have imagined.

Acting as Merle's translator, and using Merle's life and lessons as a door into the world of dogs, Ted takes us on the journey they shared. He explores why the dog-human bond is so intense and how people and dogs communicate so readily with each other. He also uses the latest wolf research showing that wolves treat maturing pups as partners rather than as subordinates to explain how sharing leadership with your dog, rather than being its alpha, can help to create a healthier, more self-reliant, and better-socialized companion".

Thanks for the comments. It was by far the nicest day of summer and the trails were packed. Usually I dont see a more than a few people on the trails, but there must have been 50+ people there today. Jackson gets fawned over wherever we go. The few regulars just say high and nice to see, but I couldnt take anymore "is that a polar bear" or "where is his saddle" comments, so we did a very technical hike down the dry stream beds since everything is dry and low flow during the summer months. Jackson is trained not to pay attention to other people unless I say its ok, but people just cannot accept that sometimes.

I cant wait until winter when the trails are closed other than to registered ice climbers and ice hikers, I wont see another person there all winter long.

BTW, Im not antisocial, it was just an overload today.

I know what you mean. Last trip to Dinner Island and we passed a FWC officer in the road. She just asked if any of us had scored a quota hunt in the WMA. It was the first time I had ever seen a game warden out there. As a matter of fact you usually don't see anyone save a working cowboy every once in a while.

Still, I caught myself feeling like this was getting ridiculous.

This MY island!:sneaky2:

William Wallace: Your island?

I also bought a mountaineering harness for him to distribute the force of the lead around his whole body if he slips, falls, or needs a tug to get his footing, rather than have the force be around his neck. He HATES it. Im hoping he gets used to it today and tomorrow during our hike, its for his own good.

Don't know what kind of camera you used, but with most cameras you can get a metering in these situations if you point your camera down at the main area, push the shutter button half way, hold, recompose and push all the way

He is a tax deduction, but luckily, I dont have enough medical bills per year (I think it has too be around 10% of gross income) to claim him.

Took the wife and some friends and their dog hiking with us today. It was fun...it was slow lol. These photos probably look repetitive, this is because I took them to the nicest falls which I tend to use as backgrounds. When we get into the fall, the water level will rise giving the falls and our hikes a whole new look and feel. Winter is my favorite season by far, also the most challenging. Had to hike mostly on trail and off of the stream beds today to keep everyone company. I brought the point and shoot since the wife knows how to use that one and only snapped a few photos.

In the photos you might catch a glimpse of my latest idea. Its a 25 ft static rescue doubled over using a quad figure 8 knot on one side and a double figure 8 on the other. In between it has a few square knots. I can use it in all sorts of leash positions with the two carabiners attached (one on his collar loop and one on my end). The square knots allow for multiple hand holds and attachment points since the rope is doubled over. Its not too useful for great distances, but in a pinch it might come in handy.

I just realized that this is the 3rd hike in a row that I have had no joint pain after. I know it wont last, but it is a welcome change. Everything goes in cycles just like the seasons.

LOL. Thanks all. It was a good day. Looking forward to hiking again alone though. I like it when my wife comes, but its a different kind of hike. Im going to try going in the afternoon if I can get a cool day and get some better photos when the light is more in my favor.

I love the mornings though, not a soul around except for a few regulars. Jackson's harness didnt work out, its a bit too tight. I found a company in Australia that has something which should work. Looking forward to some more stream bed hikes once we have that before the water levels rise and the current gets too dangerous.

Im starting to get prepared for winter. Summer hiking is easy mentally. Its a whole other beast in winter. 50 feet off trail all visual landmarks are gone after the first good snow, the triangular shape of the waterfall trails make it damn near impossible for me to navigate by sound and near the trail everything is drop offs and ice. Going off trail can be almost as treacherous for other reasons. Of course the better views and more exquisite falls are in the harder to reach areas. The dog cant go on trail in the winter in many spots and navigating off trail has to be done completely by bearing and the trail maps they have arent exactly stellar. The trail maps are topographic, but dont have any grid or north south lines, just a compass rose. Its fine for general planning but for more detailed navigation when Im actually hiking, it isnt great, or maybe my skills need a lot of work?

Didnt get to go hiking last week, work was hectic and school started again. We went today, but it was so packed with people that we hiked the stream beds to avoid the trails, although we did run into a few people here and there. Jackson had around 20 photo requests from random people. We are going to go again early tomorrow or Tuesday morning when it will hopefully be fairly empty.

On another note, the static line leash Im using has saved my butt a few times. If you have a larger dog whos neck wont be bothered by the weight of static line (I use the static rescue rope) I highly recommend it.

Here are the latest photos. I just figured out how to use the exposure setting today on the new camera (after the hike) so hopefully our future photos will start getting better lol.

Ya, it was fun. Cant wait for winter though, Im ready for ice and snow, plus it makes for better photos. Hiking along the streams fed by the waterfall are nice, they are slow but challenging, its also fun because the water level changes daily, which completely changes the path(s) you can take. Jackson seems to like it too.

A few more. The falls have been slow lately, not much rain and the falling leaves and beavers are slowing the water down for the moment. We took the opportunity to take a few photos that didnt focus on waterfalls.
I edited this one a bit to really bring out the blue in the sky as the sun went down...which is why it looks a little weird.

I like your pictures overall.

The only thing is, if I may, try not to center your dog or main subject that much. The blue sky is overcooked. It doesn't look realistic anymore. If you tone that down a little bit, you have a nice picture. Also, the one I would frame is either the photo in your post 55 underneath the group shot, the second one from the bottom, underneath the ducks, in you last post (This one, you might have to crop a little bit on top and on the right) or the close-up vertical one above the lake shots. I really like this one. You have to crank up the exposure a little bit in all of them though.

I enjoy looking at your picture and I don't mean to impose, but sometimes I can't help myself. Especially not if I see an opportunity to help a fellow photographer. I wrote a blog here about composition if you are interested.

This is my first camera that isnt a point and shoot and I am shooting in raw, so Im just starting to learn whats what, Ive had it about 2 months I think. I actually just learned that I had an exposure setting 2 weeks ago lol and this is the first set of photos Ive posted while using it. The photo with the green moss I love. I was using longer exposure settings so I could stay at ISO 100 and anytime he moved the photo blurred. That photo was actually right after he turned his head from looking staight at me, it just happened that it looks good, the problem is that at full size the right side of his head (your right if you are looking at the photo) is blury and so is his tag. At full size it wouldnt look as good. He must have moved slightly, his body is crisp, just part of his head isnt. You can see a full sized version on his website under photo gallery > Hiking Fall 2010 to see what I mean. I cant post a link per the forum rules.

I just love the colors in the photo that I said I wanted to frame and his expression, as much as I love the mossy photo, the colors and look of the photo just dont compare for me. As far as him being in the center of the photos, I dont know how I feel about that, Im conflicted. I like to do a lot of scenic shots and he is so big. he is huge, photos really dont begin to show his true size, and the scenery gets blocked by his body unless I do a shot at distance and then I dont get the sharpness I want from his expression. So often the only way to get him and the waterfall or other backdrop that I want is to put him off center, so I can get both. Shooting the waterfall off center looks weird to me because its such a huge portion of the photo. Plus he is a dog and while he does pose, there are times where i want him in a spot that he simply does not want to be...so I have to work with what he gives me. He is really good about posing, but some days are better than others.

Im having a hell of a time using the F-stop in conjuction with the shutter speed and not either getting the scene too dark or too light and washed out, especially with slower shutter speeds. Is there a general or standard F-stop setting for landscape photography that you know of?

As an example, we went camping this weekend and these are some of the photos we got...not really a fan of any of them other than the one black and white photo I took on a self timer by using an overhanging branch. We are going camping again this weekend and I'll try again.

In these Jackson isnt centered because there isnt anywhere to stand other than a few slick boulders now that the water level is higher.

Ive expermented with shutter speed, but just starting to combine it he aperture. I cant get a lot the shots I Want at a higher aperture because they are too dark and/or take too long so JAckson will move enough to be blurry.

They either seem too bright or too dark, its hard finding the sweet spot where the warmth of the colors come out without washing things out or going too dark.

First you should know that I think you did a good job with your pictures. The washed-out sky and water does not bother me that that much.

Anyway, to answer your question, you are talking obviously about exposure and what you can do to influence the exposure. I understand that from what you are saying you had your camera on shutter speed priority and you want to adjust the Aperture (f-stop) to get the correct exposure. To make decisions like this, you have to understand what each does. (I am pretty sure you know, but there are also other people who read these forums and they might not) Without going into too much detail, the aperture is like an adjustable hole in your lens that determines the quantity of light that reaches the sensor. The shutter speed is the time in which that is done. You could compare the lens to a garden hose. The shutter speed is how wide you open the faucet. The more it is open the more and faster water flows through the hose at the same time. (Ill bet nobody knew that. J) The aperture is the diameter of the hose. The bigger the diameter the more water you get, but it flows slower with the same opening of the faucet unless you increase the pressure by opening the faucet more. Apertures are written down in f-stops in this order: f2.8, f4, f5.6, f8, f11, f16, f32, f48, f64 and so on. Speed is written down as minutes, seconds, or a fraction of a second in this order 1/2000, 1/1000, 1/500, 1/250, 1/125, 1/60, 1/30, 1/15, 1/8, 1/4, and so on. The difference between these values is called stops both in aperture and speed. I mention this because most digital cameras show many in between values. These are quarter or half stops. 1/640 is not a stop different from 1/500. Exposure value is a combination of the two. There are some options here, but I get back to those in a minute.

In photography, the aperture is generally used to determine the Depth of Field(DoF). This is what will be sharp from foreground to background. Shutter speed is important if the subject is moving and you want to freeze the movement. Usually f11 will get anything sharp from 20 feet to infinity with a 50mm lens. (75 mm on a cropped sensor like you probably have) Just focus at about 40 feet (or 1/3) into the scene and you should be good most of the time. The smaller the aperture number, the larger the hole and the more narrow the depth of field. F11 is good for landscapes, f3.5 or f5.6 is good for portraits and makes the background blurry.

Your problem with washed-out highlights (Blown-out) has more to do with dynamic range than with exposure. Digital sensors can only handle a certain range of stops. Generally only about 5 stops. Again without going into too much detail, if the correct exposure is a combination of f8 and 1/250, then f3.5 and 1/1000 is outside the range. This basically means that you lose detail in the highlights and/or the blacks. Thats why your sky, the water of the waterfall, and the fire are all blown-out. There is nothing you can do about that I am afraid, unless you make multiple exposures for the different areas in the scene and combine these shots in your editing software, but that is not that easy and could cause more problems than what it is worth.

In case you cannot get the effect you want because you want a short shutter speed and an f-stop of f11 to get everything sharp for instance, the options you have are either exposure compensation or a higher ISO. To start with the latter, not unlike in the old film days, you can adjust the sensitivity of the sensor. This is measured in ISO. The standard ISO for most cameras is ISO 100. Sometimes the standard is ISO 80 (Canon pos cameras) or ISO 200 for some Nikons. The differences between the ISO values are whole numbers and doubles like 100 200 400 800 1600 3200 and so on. Each doubling counts as one stop. So, in a relatively dark environment such as the woods, a higher ISO would be more suitable. It gives you a little bit more leeway in the shutter sped and/or aperture. Too high of an ISO though of (generally speaking and depends on the camera) over ISO 800 will introduce noise or grain if you like. So, you kind of have to figure out what is important to you.

The other thing you can do is to adjust the exposure compensation Somewhere in the menu of your camera you will find this function. Sometimes it is a dial. It should say this: -3 -2 -1 -0- +1 +2 +3. Each of these six values is a stop. With some cameras, you can change the default value into 1/3 stops each. You can use this feature to adjust exposure also. However, unlike the ISO, this will not influence the shutter speed or aperture. The overall scene will just get darker or lighter. You didnt safe exif date, so I couldnt tell, but if you have a Canon, these tend to underexpose a little. + 1/3 would be good for Canons.

If you still cannot get what you want, you can work with filters, but I save that for another time. This explanation was a little brief. Although it can get pretty complicated, I hope this was some help to you and other people who were wondering.

I thought it was a great explanation. Thanks!

Thank you Rick.

Actually I should also mention that using a very small f-stop such as f22 or f32 does NOT make your pictures sharper. (Contrary to popular believe) As a matter of fact, it makes them LESS sharp. It is called diffraction, which is bending of the light waves around the blades of the aperture diaphragm and causes to lose sharpness. Most of the time, one shouldn't need more than f11. Except in Macro photography, but macro has a whole set of problems of its own.

Jackson just loves people and people go nuts over him. They act like they are meeting a hollywood star. We have a local art gallery and framing studio that he stops into during art classes and he acts as a greeter for an hour or so at the local feed store. They say he is their mascot, he just cant get enough. I just contacted a therapy dog group to see about reading for some children with learning disabilities and doing some more stuff with assisted living and hospice care type stuff.

He isnt exactly high energy, but if he doesnt get out for a really good hike and get to meet people a few times a week he gets restless and lets me know about it by flopping down on the floor and letting out these huge sighs lol. So it is good for them and him.

Thanks :) I noticed that you live in AK, its my dream to go there, its the only state I havent been to and of course the only one I really want to go to. Im planning a trip there, probably in 2013. I have to drive from the east coast so Jackson can come. Id love to take a lot of time there, but I probably can only get 3 weeks off, 10 days of which would likely be driving. Im planning on going to Denali and hoping that I can get one of my best friends to go too. One way or another, Jackson and I will get there...

I sent those photos to a therapy dog group that Im hoping to hook up with. Jackson's size really has made it hard for people to accept that he could be a therapy dog and he has been passed up before, but he is so gentle and and has excellent manners. For whatever reason he really steels the show wherever he goes, he draws people in to the point where crowds just gather around him. I wish I could do that lol.

jc1234, on Jackson's website there's a link for adoptions where there are a bunch of lovely dogs very much like him needing good homes.
If only I didn't live in an apt. I'd seriously consider one or two. From what I've read about the breed (a friend with a farm in VA also has 2) they need a run around space and they need to be exercised.

Everyone that meets him is shocked how much bigger he is than in the photos. He is a big boy. I always joke that if he were anymore relaxed he would stop breathing.

They do like room to run, but if you walk them once or twice a day, they are happy. In the summer, they dont run, they really dont do much of anything. These are wonderful dogs. The only thing to really beware of is that these dogs were bread for thousands of years to work completely independently of people. That said, they view commands as suggestions among other available options. You need to train with positive reinforcement only or they will just ignore you. Jackson is very good with following commands, but because they are thinkers, when he doesnt follow a command, its important to analyze why. Sometimes Jackson refuses to do something and usually its for both of our benefits.

Had a tough hike today. I was definitely pushing myself to my limit, even Jackson needed a few 5 minute breaks along the way, which is pretty rare. The trail we hike is closed for the winter unless you are a registered ice climber, or a properly equipped "expert" hiker (I dont know what qualifies as an expert). Minimum gear is 50ft of climbing rope, crampons, ice axe, which is fine, since I cant imagine doing the trail without them. While its rare to fine anyone on the trail in winter, we hiked an area that no one really visits in winter and the desolation and lack of past or present human presence was wonderful. The fresh snowfall helped us get a good footing over the ice, but the waterfall basins and streams are not fully frozen yet (which is weird for this time of year), so we had to move slowly and carefully...which by the end of the hike was about the only speed I could move. The sound of flowing water underneath your feet, even on thick ice is an unsettling one for sure, so we tried to stay off the basins as much as possible and took extra precautions while we were on it, with lots of testing the ice thickness before setting foot on it which slows us down a lot, but is much better than the alternative. For questionable areas that beg for a photo, I tether myself to one of the large trees that line the trail with the climbing rescue rope I have which ends in two figure 8 knots with plenty of alpine butterfly knots in between to serve as foot loop / hand holds. I've never had to actually rely on it, but I think its a worthwhile precaution. There were a lot of shots I wanted and places I wanted to hike today, but the ice just was not thick enough to chance it.

This is the base and basin of Ganoga falls, which is about 100 feet high. It looks a lot smaller when its frozen unfortunately.

Sorry I havent posted any photos in a while. The ice storms lately made the trail dangerous enough that it just wasnt worth it to risk Jackson getting hurt. We made good use of the down time though. Decided to get him tested and certified as a therapy dog too. He will be visiting active and retired military in the VA hospital, working with the families of hospice patients, and helping kids with learning disabilities improve their reading abilities.

We had two warm days last week so I figured the ice would have melted enough for Jackson to be able to get a bite into the snow with his claws. I was right, but I wasnt prepared for what we found today. Two interesting things, one was that my goal today was to test a new pack configuration for me and him since I knew we werent going to have a serious outing. The new configs were definitely not good, his pack was too top heavy and adding to his, really didnt improve mine at all. The second was that while the snow and ice over the water looked thick and level with the banks giving the appearance of thickness, the warm weather on Wed and thurs of this week combined with average highs around 35 this weekend had created a major ice melt in the falls with extremely rapid water movement that has been eroding the ice from below for about a week. I was able to pick right through the ice to the water with my ice axe amazingly easily in many places. Required a bit more planning than normal and had to spread my body weight out in certain places to avoid cracking the ice along the bank where there is no trail. Jackson was happy to be able to walk in the water again in certain places even though it was in the 20s. Murphy hit us hard today too. I had a two makeshift attachment points made of zip ties (150 pound test) break, Im thinking I got a bad pack of ties since they had very little weight on them. On of my crampon links broke as well, but I had extra zip ties and a multi tool fixed the crampon, so crisis averted. Here are a few photos. I didnt get too many since we only went about 4.5 mile just to get out, I wasnt planning on hiking today, but I couldnt take it anymore and didnt leave until it was too late to get in a full hike.

An example of that thin ice underneath about 8inches of what looks like packed snow. This was just off the bank, so the water was very shallow, but no matter how I tested the ice, there were little spots here and there that were invisible.

You can see the power of the waterflow in the background where the ice has eroded on the fall. It will likely refreeze this week if the temps hold. We are getting a foot of snow tonight, so new ice may be hard to see later this week.

Found Jackson a solid piece of ice around a large rock. I had to shoot this roped in and sprawled out spread out my mass on the ice (I was roped to a large tree about 12 ft away just in case). Photos didnt turn out that good, but for the effort I uploaded them anyway.

Great pics as always. Jackson da man....er....dog.

Your zip ties probably aren't bad...just cold. They've been around for nearly 40 years and were never designed to carry weight. They were designed to organize cables and wiring. I've probably used tens of thousands of them on the job and they were always lousy when they were cold. We were wrecking out cable that was only suspended in the air with zip ties. Temp was about 25F. All the supporting spinner wire had been removed and zips added until the cable could be pulled. I cut the first one and the weight of the cable popped the rest of them all the way down the alley and around a corner and stopped at the next pole. Thank God no one got hurt. That would have never happened in summer. It's something we had done all the time. Cold makes them brittle.

Replace your zips with paracord and you won't have to worry about it. Paracord will take the weight.

Hmm thanks for the info. I needed really small loops and I was having trouble making anything that small with P cord, but after reading your email I realized I could just do a tiny figure 8 knot with p cord and that wold work great. I happen to have an untouched pack of 100 ft that I got for a rainy day anyway.

He really takes up less room than a cat. They really fold up nicely when they lay down. They wont fit in any overhead storage bins, but they really dont need a ton of room as long as the rooms and hallways are big enough for them to turn around. However, the barking would be a problem in an apt. LGD breeds BARK when they hear something that they dont think should be heard, especially at night. When he is outside, I can easily hear him 300 yards away and if he is really upset he lets out this bark/howl thing that Im sure can be heard a half mile away on a cold night....so your neighbors probably wouldnt like you much. They dont need a ton of exercise, but they are working dogs, so they do like to feel like they have something to do (20 minutes of walking or playing with lots of commands to follow a day is plenty for them to be satisfied). More than anything though, they need companionship of a person or another dog, they were bred to be accepting of other species and smaller dogs and to permit them to always be around. Jackson HATES not being part of whatever Im doing and he will let me know it (try typing when a dog his size is shutting your laptop with his nose, or lifting up your arm and moving it with the top of his snout lol). Anyway, all that said, people always assume you need a huge house and a ton of land for these guys, but really a small cabin or condo and a small fenced yard is plenty providing they get in some good walks. I have a pretty large house for just me and my wife and Jackson is so quiet if he isnt "on patrol" that I usually have no idea where he is, even if he is right behind me. Im telling you, he is easier than a cat....its just that whole neighbors thing with the barking that will be a deal breaker for most.

You know, I really think I got a bad batch. They were brand new and I tried 3 more today just to see if I could duplicate what happened and on 2 of them I was able to pull the tie back out with a little force. These are supposed to be good up to 150 pounds and compliant with the military specs for UV and temps. I think I'll just stick with Pcord.

Then check the metal catch on the tie. If you look inside the end piece where you insert it there is a small metal catch that locks the tie in place. It's set on an angle so you can pull it one way be not back out. They may not be catching.

Had a good hike today. Tired ourselves completely out. Jackson is sleeping so heavily at the moment that the cats are jealous. The falls have melted, but the trails were still icy as hell. Had to use my knife and ice axe to navigate down one spot with an ice wall on one side and not much on the other. Jackson didnt have any problems with traction though. I was jealous.

Had a tough hike yesterday. The snow is turning into a wet slush and the ice layers have melted, so we would walk through 6" of snow one step and then the next step would be almost up to my hips. It was physically exhausting, especially with a pack. I was so tired once I got back to the truck I was actually staggering lol...beaten down by slush! Didnt take too many photos, but snapped a couple. The falls were running very fast after flooding rains.

First real hike in about 15 months. Had to up my class load in grad school for the last year in order to graduate this past spring. Between work and school I had no free time to hike or camp. Last winter uncharacteristically warm with almost no snow and hiking on dirt in winter is not my idea of fun, so I guess I didnt miss much. We did some hiking over the summer and the fall, but both of us were getting in shape again after literally no regular exercise other than our walks for a year.

Anyway, this hike kicked my butt. Hiking through wet snow was much harder than I remembered (go figure) and I had 30 pounds of gear to lug around. At one point I just sat on a rock and really thought about how badly I felt like getting up again lol, but it was new years eve and I really wanted ice cream that night. Jackson on the other hand didnt have any problems. I've had him on a diet for the last 8 months and he is down 30 pounds. He used to sleep for a full day after a hike, but this time he was ready to go out again the next day. Saw lots of small and mid size bear tracks up and sown some seriously steep angles, which was pretty impressive over ice.

We didn't get many photos, as my tripod broke on the way there and I was going so slow that I didn't stop to often since I didn't want to navigate the area once the sun started to set. New tripod is on the way and I got a remote shutter release for the camera, so hopefully I can get a few decent shots on Sunday when we go out again. I also finally found a company who would make a load bearing and safety rated dog harness big enough for Jackson after 2 years of searching, so he will be sharing part of the load starting in a few weeks, thankfully.

Here are a few of varying quality (cell phone and real camera shots) from this 2012, nothing too exciting from an outdoors perspective really. Most show his general activity level when we arent hiking or exploring. He has two modes active and standby, but nothing in between...which is just about my speed lol.

One of my favorites:

I definitely need an ND filter for the snow to take longer exposure water shots, but I did what I could without one. Yesterdays hike was filled with opportunities to use the remote shutter release, which was fun. I still need to practice framing the shot without us in it, but I'll work on it.
