The project is begun. The Ivan rifle is stripped and cleaned. All cosmiline removed along with every screw, pin and spring.
This is a Tula, all parts matching. Round receiver.
The bore is dark but has strong rifling.
I also got 300 rounds of Polish ammo. 147 gn steel core on stripper clips. I have another 440 rds on order at $89.00. I can not reload with jacketed bullets for that. That is one big difference from my last ownership of a 91/30. There was none of this cheap ammo around back then.
I will go to the range and do a trial target as a base reference tomorrow.
I must now learn how to post pictures.

Did something yesterday I have not done in several decades. I shot at 100 yards with open sights.
The Mosi did it's part to a level I did not expect. My 50 yard group was three shots in 1 1/2" with a called flyer that would have opened the group to 3".
At 100 yards the gun did it's part but my 60 year old eyes were not up to the challenge. The group opened to 8" totally due to me not being able to focs on the bull. Couldn't see the %^& thing!
The 25 yard group had been 2" right and the 100yd group was a foot right. Examining the rifle I realized the front sight was slightly tweeked to the left, off the allignment mark.
Amazing to me was that at 100 yards I could still keep the open sight shots in the head zone of a soldier with my old eyes and Polish ammo that has a bad rep for consistancy.
I got home and straightened the front sight and gave the bore a scrub. It is getting smoother and brighter as it is piolished with the bore brush.
I drilled and tapped the rifle for a scope last night and have a mount half finished. My homemade mount is as ugly as the Mosin.
The schedule of improvement i have in mind is
Scope
Trigger work
Glass bedding
Free floating the barrel
Tweeking the ammo
I know from past experiences that scoping the rifle will help me close groups. My next improvement step is always smoothing the trigger. If it were a .22 I would start experimenting with ammo choices next, but this beast must wait for reloading dies and proper .313 jacketed bullets to arrive.
Got to get back in the shop and find another hacksaw blade.
I'm all new to this Mosi thing too but I've read the 91/30 was designed to be shot with the sticker hung on the front end. If you remove the bayonet it messes with the harmonics and it will be off. Supposedly, the arsenal sighted them with the bayonet installed because it was designed to be carried that way.

KS, have you slugged the bore? My 91/30 slugs at .311 mostly, M38 @ .309, haven't checked the M44, (currently deployed).
Been looking for the .313 bullets, most books call for .308 bullets, but I thinking thats for covering their tookas..........
Is your counter-bored? My M38 is, M44 and 91/30 not, all seem to shoot well.
M44 front sight was pushed off the mark, and shot left. Pushed it back and came back in.
Will be intrested in how the trigger work goes........

That's a cool project. I had a westinghouse that was converted to ought six but I heard that wasn't a wise thing to do so I westinghouse marked barrel from numrich arms but dang I traded the rifle off and years later found the barrel in amongst some parts. I wish i had the gun back.

The theory about the bayonet is from the carbine length guns with the swing out bayonet. They seem to do better with the bayonet installed.
Apparently the 91/30 was sighted without the bayonet and from what I have read, shows no difference in accuracy with or without the sticker. The sniper models were never shown with fixed bayonets so accuracy was apprently now affected by its presence.
Soviet doctrine was that the bayonet was to always be attached. I think this was due to the Soviet soldiers' tendency to throw away or sell anything that was not attached to the equipment, and not actually to improve the rifle's operation.
I have not slugged this bore, but every other bore I have slugged on a Mosi has been .313 or larger. Enfields are the same way. I have an Enfield that allows a .308 slug to slide from one end to the other rattling like a pea down a water pipe.
My muzzle is not counterbored. The barrel is looking better with each scrubbing and I am amazed this is so on a 71 year old war use rifle. It must not have seen much line use.
I am having a really difficult time doing only one operation at a time on this rifle. I want to dive in and do everything I know will enhance the performance right now! That would counter the intent I had, which was to show wat each operation would do and allow a person to pick and choose what they wanted to do to their rifle and know what improvement they could expect from each operation.
Most of my past gun work has involved taking a pig's ear and turning it into a silk purse. I have often purchaned Mausers and completely reworked them before I ever fired them. New barrel, custom stock, new trigger, scope of choice, then I would expect superior performance from the first shot with only minimal tuning.
This effort has turned into taking a pigs' ear and turning it into a really good shooting pig's ear.
One of the amazing aspects is that while cleaning the rifle I realized that I would be willing to hunt with it as it sits if the shots were inside 100 yards. I would also be willing to "fight" with this rifle at 200 yards, open sights, 60 year old eyes and all.
I am really tempted to install an old Williams Guide peep sight I have lying in the parts box. It is intended for a small ring Mauser but I bet I could make it fit on this Mosi. That would allow me to compare the accuracy change between open sights and peep sights. I may do that when all else is complete. What's two more holes in the side of a Mosi?

I mounted a scope on the Borrus rifle a couple of days ago and finally got to the range. I need to lock down the mount screws better due to things generally falling off the rifle after two shots.
If I can get a third shot to follow up on the first two this rifle is definately a keeper and I will be forced to write an apology to anyone I have ever insulted for owning one of these POS guns.
I am writing a detailed step by step on Word and will transfer it when the deed is done. I will eventually have pictures but it is difficult. The gun is so ugly the camera keeps running off and hiding.
I would guess there are thousands of Germans (and more than a few Russians) that could tell you just how accurate it is. But they aren't talkin' much these days. Great write up!!

The first two shots were seperated by 3/4" center to center. I saved the target. 3rd shot went haywire due to the mount shifting. I know from past experience that I will probably be able to cut the groups 1/3-1/2 with some trigger work, but I have to get some consistant, measurable groups out of the scope work first.
Me and the cat are going to run a bead of JB weld under the base and lock it down in a proper manner. I once mounted a scope on a .308 with no screws and only JB Weld holding the mounts in place. Hunted with it all one season like that. I often mount a long eye relief scope on ML guns using JB Weld for accuracy testing. Hit the mount with a torch and pop it off when finished.

LOL...that's better than most people can shoot!
JB Weld is like magic. I once fixed a cracked rearend housing, in a racecar, with it. I ran that thing for two more years, then the guy I sold it to ran it for two years, and when he sold it, it still had that rearend in it. LOL:blushing:
I'm sure glad you explained that was a race car.

I was introduced to JB Weld when I stripped the teeth off a windshield wiper sprocket on the drivers side of my car. I was standing there wondering what I was going to do when a neighbor drove up. He said JB Weld would fix it.
I was unsure so he told me to come down the road to his house. He had a McCormick tractor with a crack in the engine block 6" long that he had repaired with JB Weld ten years earlier. It was still plowing the garden.
Like you, I fixed the wiper with JB and it was still working two years latter when I sold the car.
If the Russians had JB Weld they might have won the "cold war".

Back to the range today for a long session. 90 degrees and about the same humidity.
I had the bed rail scope mount locked down with JB Weld and everything had been bore sighted to the bore and iron sights using my neighbor's choo-choo train mailbox as the sighting point.
First shot was 4" low and left. Two was touching and three made a small triangle about 1" Center to center. All at 50 yards.
I started moving the group to the POA and heated the barrel up rapidly. The group opened with the heat. I had to let it cool off for half an hour to close the group again.
After cooling I had the last 3 shot group inside the 1" circle and one inch high @50 yards.
I did not shoot at 100 due to being worn out and the range getting crowded. I had already hogged one of the benches for 2 hours so I packed it up and let some one else shoot for a while. I will do a 100 yard session within the next few days.
Even with the hot barrel none of the 21 rounds I fired was more than 3" from where I was aiming. I am confident now that my first shot from cold bore will strike where I am looking. The scope cut my groups in half at 50 yards.
I am really starting to look foreward to doing trigger work on this rifle. Pulling the trigger is like trying to dismantle the Great Pyrimid with one finger.

Just finished with my bolt butchering. Now I have to put it back in usable shape. It's getting a spoon shaped bolt handle for right now. I have the pretty one for it but I want to see if this will work.
One thing I have found out about these old guns is that there are more myths about them than any other firearm since the invention of gunpowder. I have really had to root through the material to find a bit of turth to work with.
I have also found that there are some real nuts out there that treasure every one of these old POS rifles past the boundries of lunacy. There is one forum that will ban you for asking about any modification past factory specs! On top of that their reference material was dead wrong on several other points. I just stayed quiet, got my info and moved along, which is unusual for me. I would normally pick a fight on sites like that. Poor fellas.
Lucky for us I have no qualms at hacking up a Russian Rifle for the betterment of science. Thing is that this is one of the few military rifles I have no desire to really "sporterize". I don't want to make it pretty, I just want to see how good I can make it shoot.

You are talking to a guy that will take apart and reassemble a pickup over the weekend, build an MG42 out of the neighbors trash and has three different recipes for napalm tucked away in the back of his head, but I type with one finger and I'm scared to death of the computer tower.
If I post pictures you guys are going to need surgery for the busted gut you get from laughing.
As far as the rifle goes, I have a bit of wood to shave off the stock so the bolt can close and it's back in operation. Time to pull the action again.

I could handle a 105 with no problem! At least I could at one time.
When the wife died and I had to move I lost a bunch of detail stuff. There were cables that went from the camera to the computer and a seperate card reader that I have yet to see.
Guess I need to go to Best Buy and find someone that knows something about a Cannon Camera.
The new "bolt" is attached. This will allow me to flip the scope around on the mount and get it over bore. I will not do that yet. I go to the range to do 100 yard testing this trip. I want to do that with the scope offset.
The way it is set up now is the minimum one would have to do to mount a scope. I have spent ZERO $$$ so far. Even if I had bought scope, mount and rings it would have been minimal cost. I could have done all of it with a hand drill, hacksaw and thread tapps.
I have already cut group size in half at 50 yards. I am anxious to see how close I can hold at 100.

Last night walking the attack dog, I came across the sone of my recently deceased neighbor. He was taking all of his dad's rifles to his house. As I was watching him remove close to 15 rifles, one stuck out to me (literally). It was a 1944 MN with the bayonet attached. The son was in the military and knew quite a bit about Russian weaponry. It was great listening to him give me the detail of the rifle. I think he was glad to have someone who actually cared.
Good luck on your progress KYRS
When you get it sighted in go over and shoot the Balut thread, please. Of just beat it to death with the butt of the gun. Either would be appreciated.

I keep duct tape in 4 colors, incoluding camo. They make the digital pattern now.
I made a recoil pad using two layers of closed cell foam sleeping pad and camo DT. Works very well.
As I experiment with the camera I will post the progress. I now have a bolt handle that is as ugly as the scope mount, but it works.
This has been one of those strange projects where everything I have tried, worked. It is all ugly, but it works. And everything I have done has improved accuracy to some degree. Drilling, grinding, threading, gluing and a bit of the ole duct tape, all from the shop shelf.
I can see where these 91/30 guns are addictive. They shoot pretty good out of the box, are easy to understand and work on, ammo is crazy cheap and good quality.
I have other rifles and often feel that 20-40-60 rounds is plenty to have around. I have loading dies, powder, primers and feel no real need to have a big cache of ammo. Not this 91/30. End of the week I am getting another spam can. I may snag another rifle too. How else can a person have a rugged long range rifle with sniper quality accuracy for less than $150?

Aluminum angle not iron. Sorry, I couldn't resist...:tongue_smilie:
I still don't understand why the scope is mounted that way though.
kyratshooter
07-26-2010, 07:09 PM
That angle iron is not aluminum! It's solid 3/16 mild steel and weighs almost a pound!
The scope is mounted that way because I bought a commercial mount and used the comercial mount holes for the home made mount. I will replace the home made unit with the commercial mount when the experiment is over. I wanted to drill as few holes in the receiver as possible. This also required no mod to the bolt handle.
If I were doing a straight emergency mount I would use a flat piece of 1/8" plate mounted to holes drilled in the side of the receiver. Two holes in the side of the rifle and a splinter of wood removed would be the only mods to the rifle.
This is not what the scope and mount looks like at this point. It gets a new look every couple of days. I'll post more pictures and a couple of the targets I shot today.
I now have the scope mounted over the bore and the glass bedding is completed. Shot a couple of satisfactory groups that seem to porve the work is worth the effort.

In another couple of weeks I am going to cut those groups in half again.
This is using the Polish surplus. I have not shot a single round of commercial ammo yet. When I get a dozen cases to work with I will have some handloads.
I have not even touched the trigger yet. I am going to need a bucket of rocks to measure the pull. My scale only goes to 15 pounds and that will not trip the trigger. I'm going to have to hang a bucket from the trigger and fill it with enough weight to trip the sear, then weigh the bucket!

I did the trigger tonight.
http://i971.photobucket.com/albums/ae193/lstancliff_photos/006-1.jpg
I shimed the sear. This modification is frowned on by many as just another "unsafe bubba operation", but I found that it was often done as an armory prep to the sniper rifles. It reduces primary travel and strain on the sear spring.
http://i971.photobucket.com/albums/ae193/lstancliff_photos/001-2.jpg
Installed a set screw in the trigger. This is what the Huber trigger is with a ball bearing added. I simply used the set screw as a hardened bearing point. Cost of the Huber-$80. Cost of the KY Ratshooter model-$0.29
Polished everything within an inch of its life. I also installed an overtravel screw.
Trigger now breaks smooth and clean at 3 pounds with no slop and minimum over-travel. It was origionally 17 pounds. I reduced the weight of pull by 14 pounds with a washer and set screw. This improvement was almost scarey it worked so well.

I officially had the loudest rifle at the range today.
Messing around with the MN and mounted a LER scope on a scout mount. 15 rounds and it held zero well, which was my concern.
For the nonmechanical this is definately the way to go for long range work. One pin removed, the mount screwed on and the scope installed. No drilling, no bolt bending, nothing to screw up.
I'm looking to do that with one of my Mosin's. I've been looking at an S&K Scope mount with an LER set up as a scout model. I just need to pull the trigger and do it.

Thanks.
Did you just tap the pin out of the rear sight? It looks like the pin that it hinges on could be tapped out. There are two other pins in the housing. I assume you left both alone and just removed the elevated sight?

NcStar has some good and bad stuff. If you go too cheap you get about what you would expect. I got a 4x compact on sale for $20 and guess what? It's a $20 scope. Then I get this 2-7 LER for a shade under $50 and I get more than I expected.
I am going to buy at least one more LER just because I have become irritated at my dot sights. I hate being battery dependent. That and there is just something inherently not right about an aimpoint on a 94 Winchester!
I would not be surprised to see the NcStar prices jump soon, just like Simmons and Tasco of 20 years ago and the Barska of a couple of years back. I bought some real nice Barska stuff for less than $50 a couple of years ago that is going for $100+ now.
The mount goes on the rear sight base. Tap out the pin holding the elevator, remove ther elevator and spring. The mount attaches with two set screws one on each side of the rear base using the existing pin holes. There is a large set screw that supports the mount against the barrel at both front and rear. Each big set screw has a locking set screw of its own. Works like a see-saw. You can also adjust the elevation using the set screws and save travel on the scope dials.
It just about takes longer to explain it that to do it.
Actually, I thought you did a pretty good job of explaining it.

Hmmmmm.....put a little angle on it to start with, and you've got a long distance shootin' mosin!!! That's an entertainment value!!! LOL:gunsmilie:
