Spent a little time "Picking" today, came across some "Non-powered tools".
Paid $40 bucks for the sickle and $2 buck apiece for the draw knife and drill.
Drill gears were locked up, but a little WD-40 works just fine.

Couple of other finds, Dado blade, (new) $1.50, auto buffer (new)$2 bucks, and a diesel fuel can, $2 bucks.
Great finds!! A little oil and a little sharpening and you'll be in business.

This one is kinda a heavy duty drill with the "chest rest" for more pressure.
I have a smaller drill, but it's missing the screw on end of the woodedn top, used to store bits........some day I'll find one.

Not a tool, but I did find a Coleman oven for 25 cents, I gave the guy two dollars just so I could sleep tonight, and for another 25 cents a bungee net for what goes on the back of a four wheeler, except I will use this for my fishing tote behind my sled this winter.

I havnt been to many yard sales lately. If I see anything interesting on my way by I will go back but most of them lately have been kids clothes and things like that. Great finds Hunter!

From the looks of the oven, I don't think it has many memories except in the dark of the box. There isn't anything to indicate that it was ever used. The bungee net hadn't been opened from the platic bag that it came in.

As a young-er guy, I used a lot of "hand tools" (all we had).
Feels like I'm coming full circle.
As I could afford it, I had/have built up my array of power tools, but I seem to be drawn back to the basic "non-powered" tools.
Still have quite a few, but seems I can't help myself when I do find a new "Old tool".
I feel sorry for the really young guy(gals) that never had the chance to use basic tools and see just how well they worked, were made (NOT china), and just the way they look and feel.
As far as getting lucky, I had been talked into taking Mrs. Hunter, Rummaging, ( she can be persuasive), to look for "Grandson toys and stuff", and she did well.
But as "Karma Happens" (you heard that here first!), I was rewarded!
Using the old tools is really about as close as you can get to being hand made and still use a tool. I have some tools that many of you older guys have probably never seen as well as some I've made. I'll have to drag some out and take some pics. But here's one that's mounted on my work bench that gets a lot of use. Anyone know what it is and/or what it's used for? I've erased part of the name because it tells what it is and I've highlighted the date; 1919, the same year my dad was born. No, it's not a paper towel holder. That's the other "tool".

Almost reminds me of a holder for sharpening hand saw blades, but that just a guess.
Negative but much closer. You're describing a saw filing vise. Here's a pic of a Stover 22 for that. This one is for 2 man saws.

I use it just as it is. If you look closely you'll see it's bolted to the top of the bench. This is fun.

Well it say's it's a self adjusting bench clamp, I think the lever at the top moves something below what you can't see. No idea

It holds round stock so you can work it with a draw knife or a spoke shave. It will also hold flat stock on edge if you want to plane it. Pretty handy little gizmo. It's an Evertite Bench Clamp.
Once you place a piece of stock in the clamp you can tap the end off it or the wing with a hammer and it will lock in place just by pressure. When you want to release the stock just tap in the opposite direction.

Good one, I'm sure there are a lot of old tools out there that were used, but uses were forgotten.
I'd have to look to see if I still have it, but did you ever see a square circular saw blade?

That I have not seen. I'd like to, though.
I'll put together the panel vise I built and take a picture of it. It's for gluing individual stock to make larger panels like a table top. It's easy peasy and works like a clamp....I mean champ. I'll do that tomorrow.
I also have a wooden tool that cuts threads on wooden dowels. Most people don't know what it is either. I'll post it, too. I haven't used it in a while so I'll have to find it. Instead of gluing chair rungs you can cut opposing threads on each end of the rung and inside the socket and just screw them in. It's more work but once you screw in the cross rung they won't come unscrewed. They are locked into place. You can pin the cross run on one side and it won't come unscrewed either.

Well, I can't find the square blade, was supposed to be used to cut circles and arcs.
Idea being the empty spot would allow the saw to turn slightly.
I helped a guy, cover some bushes with plywood, (long story) and I used it there, I'll have to ask him.
Actually works pretty well, if you go slow............
As far as a dowel threader, the coolest thing I saw was an old, old banister rail.
Made out of hickory, before the Civil war.
Was joined in the middle with a threaded wooden dowel, each end opposite threads and when tightened up, you could not see a joint, WOW.
As promised, here are some pics of the dowel threader and the panel clamp. It's pic heavy so I apologize for that.
First up is the dowel threader. The device on the left has a set of thread cutters in the middle (silver object) of the tool. This is used to cut exterior threads. The device on the right cuts the matching internal threads. This particular one is for 3/4 inch dowels.
Hardwoods are by the far the best woods to thread. Softwoods will generally twist and split. Hardwoods often have to be lubricated with Linsead Oil so the threads don't damage the wood.

Here is a series of pics with an explanation so you can understand how the panel clamp works. I made this years ago and I don't remember if I dreamed up the design or found it somewhere. It's just been too long ago.
Start with two 2X4 notched on the bottom to sit on saw horses. There are two bottom notches on each 2X4 and three on top for the clamps. I also drilled a hole in the end of each 2X4, which I'll discuss at the end. Just remember those holes.

Next I took some 1X3 and drilled holes at predetermined spaces and placed a block at the top. There are three of these in total. (I actually ripped these to 2 1/4 from a single piece of wider stock but you can use 1X3.)

You then place your wood stock on the frame to be glued up. I didn't drag out a bunch of stock. I'm using a piece of floor laminate in this pic because it was handy and it's photoshopped to make it look like 4 pieces of wood.
You can see that I have placed a short section of wooden dowel in each of the cross members. These dowels will serve as part of the stop for the clamps just as the blocks of wood serve as stops for the far end. The dowels make the whole thing adjustable.

You then drop a piece of wood stock over the dowels to complete the stop.

Then you use a piece of angled stock as a wedge to clamp the wood pieces together.

As you tap the wedge in it will get tighter and tighter against the stock you are working on. You can see that the wooden block will rotate with the wedge so it remains square to the working stock. That's important because you want to apply even pressure across the entire stock.
I cut some extra wedges because you glue raw wood and the edges may not be square across the length of the stock. You might find that no matter where you place the dowel it will either be too close or too far away. In that case, you move the dowel out and use two wedges.
You'll also note the wedges have holes in them as well.

That's all there is to the clamp. You would, of course, biscuit the pieces of stock and glue them so they won't separate.
Once you are done, it's time to put the many pieces of the clamp away. Here's where those holes come in handy. Take the dowels, the rectangular stop and wedges and place them all on one cross member.

I installed two dowels near the ceiling and slide the two 2X4s onto the dowels using the holes (remember them?) that I drilled.

My truck does. Momma's car doesn't. I have too dang many tools for the truck to get in. I don't have enough tools mind you. Just too many.
