Scouting; old school.

As most of you know I've always been an advocate of The Boy Scout program, and still am, to a certain degree. If that's all that's available to a young man in their home place, then yes, I believe that they should become involved.

That being said, I've come to believe that, like many things in this life, in most cases, Scouting has become a mere shadow of it's former self. Obviously there are some good Scouters on this forum: Rick, Last Mohican, FinallyME, & PGV Outdoors, just to name a few. These guys can be counted on to lead the youth of today into the outdoors & instill the proper values into their collective hearts & minds.

I've just been comparing Boy Scout Handbooks & in the past I'd just look up anything contained in those pages that might help teach somebody something. Then Finally ME mentioned in the "knot thread" that a boy going for his "Tenderfoot" badge had to learn only 3 knots. I want to share something here that I discovered in the 1943 "Handbook For Boys" which was the BSA Handbook of it's time. This is from page 68 & in listing the Tenderfoot requirements back then is titled: "Requirement #3."

"Tie the Square Knot & any eight of the following knots: Sheet Bend, Bowline, Fisherman's Sheepshank, Slip, Clove Hitch, Timber Hitch, Two Half-Hitches, Carrick Bend, Miller's Knot, Rope Halters, Pipe Hitch, Stevedore, Barrel Hitch, Girth Hitch, Binder Twine Bend, Lariat Loop, Hitching Tie."

To be honest, I do not recognize some of these knots, but suspect that they may have been needed back then to be used with horses. That's fine, however, notice that an 11 year old boy was expected to learn to tie 8 knots prior to getting his Tenderfoot badge! Today he only has to learn 3! And that is just ONE of the many Tenderfoot requirements listed in the older manual! Is it any wonder that the learning curve of our young people is on a steep decline? Perhaps it is time to create our own "Unofficial Scouting groups" with our own children & teach them, not only what they need to know about Outdoor craft, but to instill the proper values into them as well.

I will next be posting some info about Survival that's listed in a couple of older BSA Fieldbooks. Today, it is my understanding that the BSA Fielbook is a poor guide for the outdoors and is substituted in some Troops with Paul Tawrell's book: "Camping & Wilderness Survival." Tenderfoot Requirement 101: State the Boy Scout motto & explain how it can be applied!

The motto, of course, is "Be Prepared!" Here's an example of application as taken from the 1967 "Fieldbook For Boys And Men." (BSA) This is from Chapter 16, starting on pg. #301: "Survival."

"THE SECRET TO SURVIVAL IS PREPARDNESS." While this chapter is specifically aimed at survival, Almost every chapter in this book will help you to be prepared for survival should you ever be faced with that need. When you've camped every month of the year, you know what needs to be done to guard yourself from the cold. Prepardness brings confidence--confidence that you can lick any survival problem you face. An expert in polar life has said: "Morale is the single greatest factor in survival." Many who have survived trying circumstances echo this statement. You'll have that built in survival kit if you are prepared.

To survive means to "live on." Survival is a matter of life over death."

(And further down the page...) Few people in a survival situation have had any training for it. But, you can survive if you are prepared--prepared physically, mentally, and morally, and if you know techniques to tip the odds in your favor."

There is a lot more in this chapter, but the key point here is: "Be Prepared!" :cool2:

I like what you're saying. The Marine Corps said: " we hold to tradition, not to popular thinking". IMO, this country has gone backward by dumbing down instead of rewarding excellence. I've said for a few years that its time to make a stand. If you want to stand for a higher expectation, I'm with you.

I'm not certain it's about "success rate", YCC. It has to do with making a program available to as many kids as possible.

A lot has changed in the dynamics of the American family over the last 50 years. there are a LOT more single parent families and a lot more gay couple families. You don't have to agree or disagree with it. It's just a fact. Add to that the influence of an electronic world and you find enrollment dropping in favor of sitting in front of a TV with a game controller or in front of a computer. So the challenge becomes how to entice kids away from those devices and into Scouting.

The obvious thing is to incorporate the things that attract THEM. After all, it is about THEM. Once you get them into scouting you still accomplish the "old fashioned" goals of religion, community, service, and all the "On my honor..." oath thingies.

Remember, too, that Scouting was founded on the things that kids did back then. A lot of rural kids doing rural kid things. Those demographics have changed, too. Today, it's much more urban and everyone is doing urban things (see computers above). I'd guess if scouting were founded today, it would be on the kind of things we see scouting migrating to.

Even the Scout masters have changed with mother's filling those roles because they are the head of the household for a lot of boys and it's harder and harder to find men that want to do it.

We have a tendency to think with blinders on. They only let us see what we our ideal is. How we think the mold should look like for kids and scouting. But if we take them off for a moment we see a much different world around us. If Scouting didn't incorporate the things that attract today's youth there would be one old scout master sitting around a smoldering camp fire wondering where the kids went to.

Personally, I'd much rather see kids involved in a scouting program run by a mother doing her best as a volunteer than have the kid sit in front of some game console. That's the worst case of scouting in my mind, by the way. Still, the kids are learning valuable social skills and getting to attend events they otherwise wouldn't have the opportunity to do. A shrewd scoutmaster today will entice the kids with gaming and electronics and introduce them into a world of outdoors. But you have to get them in the door first. That's much harder to do in an urban environment where kids have no background in outdoor skills and so no desire to get involved in it.

It is a good post, Sarge. You bring up a good many things that have changed about scouting. Those older skills are still very valuable and will serve a scout throughout their life. You just have to hold on to them long enough to teach it.

Rick, I agree with what you said about the current Scouting program today. There are also legal issues that face the movement today as well. I guess my point was that we've lowered our standards for young people to the point that they lack certain character traits that Scouting used to build, so maybe there is something that we can do, even on a small level. Also the "survival teaching" that used to be prevalent has been "watered down." Again, maybe we, as concerned parents & responsible adults can do something within our own small circles. I remember something quite clearly. When I was 19 & in our "Explorer" group in Job Corps in Wisconsin I was camping with the only black guy in our group. During our conversations I found out that he used to live right near me back when I lived in Chicago; yet we had never met & never knew one another before. This was his 1st camping experience ever & it had a deep impact on him! He said he never realized how great the outdoors was! We became friends & "comrads-in-arms" as a result of those outings. That spoke volumes to me over the years. I can't help but wonder how the same thing might impact other young people from large urban areas. :cool2:

YCC and Rick both make good points. And, I think they are both right. We shouldn't forget that the BSA program still has to attract young boys. That is why they have expanded in some areas and dropped others. I was talking with one of my leaders the other day. We were realizing that only one of our boys now have a dad that gives a crap about what their boy is doing. Interestingly, the dad was the leader. Right now, I have about 12 boys if I count the 11 to 17 year olds. Only 1 has a dad that helps him with scouting. 4 of them have dads that aren't very present. It sure is hard when you don't have much support. On our last campout, I had one boy show up with a lunch for the next day, and NOTHING ELSE. No sleeping bag, or poncho, or jacket. He had a signed permission slip and was dropped off by his parent, which meant they knew he was going camping. What parent in their right mind would send their kid camping with nothing? That is why we meet at my house before we leave. I gave him a sleeping bag and sleeping mat. He didn't know that I also grabbed an extra jacket, gloves, hat, water bottle, and poncho. On another campout, I had a kid dragging behind on the hike. I asked him "doesn't your dad ever take you hiking." His answer, "No, he is always to busy playing video games".

It changed my view, when I tried to leave the BSA my homestead, for any scouting need, but they could not sell it. They say, "We would only want it if we could sell it, and get the cash".
On another note, it is interesting how many knots I learned in Scouts that I use now, like the timber hitch.

As a Scout Master in a poor area i can tell you it's tough to make a troop work. The scouts complain that they are not getting the merit badges fast enough, like the other troop in town. I will not dumb down the requirements. Our troop camps once a month, every month regardless of weather. -6 fine, double bag them. out of the 15 scouts 3 have both parents at home. Alot of the time i feel like a baby sitter. The other troop has not had a campout in 13 months. If we camp by cars i tell them they can only bring what they can fit in their packs. We have a lot of fun though. 50 miles up the lost coast. 50 miles down the Sac river. Ice fishing in winter, Lava beds in January. 1 week at scout camp. Most of the kids are raised by single mothers and have no male roll models at home. these kids are starving for attention and leadership. Needless to say the troop is always short on sleeping bags, tents, packs, etc.. but we make do. The fund raisers have been poor the last few years as a result of the economy. I believe and pray that the skills that I and the other leaders teach will help these young men become more self sufficient and skilled in life. They do all the cooking and cleaning and the older scouts teach the young and hopefully the pass the skills on as the move on in life. my2cents.

As an Eagle Scout I have to agree the scouting program is only a shadow of what it once was. The requirements are less for any award and todays scouts know almost no scout skills. Out of my whole troop only my brother and I new how to tie all the boy scout knots, treat for shock and other simple first aid, lashing, and how to use a compass. Today kids only care about their stupid Ipods, cell phones, and gameboys. They act like it is tourture to do a little physical excercise.

Sarge, I couldn't agree with you more. Once kids get a taste of the outdoors the vast majority of them love it and want to do it. You're also right about concerned parents being able to make a difference. All of us can whether you are in scouting or not. I know Trax does a ton of work with kids outside of scouting and all of it matters...a lot. That's the foundation for all our tomorrow's. Kid's become what we adults teach them to become. Or they learn on their own or from peers and that's not a good way to grow up.

After having gone through the program, these are all utterly true.

1. I got my fishing merit badge from a counselor who not only had never fished & didn't know how to tie the fishing line to the hook at all, but when I brought in fish to show the rest of the class how to clean them he literally ran away from the tent because he was scared of fish.
2. This is all my parents cared about. Most of my leaders, too. There were very few situations where I really had to know something like how to tie a certain knot.
3. Haha, gang bangers? But yeah, at times it felt like it was a daycare.

Rick make a good point, as well as far as changing times and legal issues.

And judging by everyone's views, I think we all in agreement, that it's sad, the way thinks are going.

I guess my feeling is what ever way they can keep kids interest, and that may very from place to place, is better than nothing.

We had a young man approach our Duck Unlimited Committee with a proposal to rebuilt a dozen wood duck houses on a state wildlife wet land.

He was going for his Eagle Scout rating.

We voted to support his effort, with materials and help.
He (now an Eagle Scout) and his whole family are now D.U. members.

It seems that the cream will rise to the top, no matter what, those with interest will seek it out, either with BSA or other ways.

BSA is a business as SD found out, and sadly can't be counted on now as in the past.

Many people think of gear when the subject of survival comes up! What's the best knife or isn't this the canteen Bear Grylls uses? The fact is that you survive as long as you take a breath. Please note how Chapter 12 of the 1994 printing of the BSA Fieldbook begins entitled "Survival Preparedness." (pg. 195.) (by Robert Brown; Executive Director, American Outdoor Safety League.)

"Every day of our lives we are engaged in surviving. continually we need air to breath, food & water to nourish ourselves, and protection from the elements. As a society we've created intricate networks of food production, distribution, and storage that can put fresh fruits on our tables in the dead of winter and make eating ice cream an everyday occurrence even when there are no cows and no ice. Our water comes from public systems that are so convenient that we seldom think about the wonder of having fresh, pure water piped into our homes. Our homes are sturdy & secure, insulated against heat and cold and kept comfortable by furnaces and air conditioners that may rely on energy sources hundreds of miles away.
Most of the time we survive without much effort, but when we travel in the back country, down wild rivers and across rugged terrain, we remove ourselves from the familiar networks of society."

To understand what the author is saying is that our mind is the 1st item in our survival kit.

On the page facing this chapter is a quote from Ernest Thompson Seton, 1906:
"The worst thing you can do is to get frightened. The truly dangerous enemy is not the cold or hunger so much as the fear. It robs the wanderer of his judgment and of his limb power; it is the fear that turns the passing experience into a final tragedy...keep cool and all will be well...Use what you have where you are right now."

Note, nothing is said here about any gear or equipment, but of an attitude; a mental outlook. Remember: "Panic Kills!" More coming. :cool2:

I remember wanting to enter the Scouting program back when I was a tadpole about 7-8 years old. I was into anything that resembled the military & that included the Cub Scouts. Back then it was mandatory for all Scouts to wear a "complete" uniform & every Tuesday some of my classmates could be seen wearing "Cub Scout Blue" while sitting in their seats. As a result, I strongly desired to join, however , my folks said that we didn't have the money. There was neighborhood politics as well as many of these kids in this "esteemed organization" were the same mean kids who enjoyed pummeling me & my brothers when no one was around. So it more than likely wouldn't have worked anyway.

That didn't stop me, however. Uptown in our small burg was a 2nd hand store that was called "Ethyl's Resale Shop." She'd trade paperback books & comics 2 for 1. She had a whole table piled high with comic books & that's why I 1st started going in there. One day I spotted an old Boy Scout Handbook and I quickly traded some books for it. Looking around I found a used Boy Scout Uniform & quickly spent my meager allowance on it! I think my childish idea at the time was that I was going to show those other kids! I was "promoting" myself to a level above theirs! Yes, I know it was silly now, but that's how I looked at it back then.

I studied everything I could in that handbook. I cooked my 1st "hardtack" in our home oven using a recipe out of it. My brother a year younger than I loved it! I bought a very sharp pocket knife for 50 cents, which was my complete allowance for the week, & proceeded to cut the crap out of my hand & fingers. The way my mother carried on you'd of thought I was going to bleed to death. :innocent:

My cousin joined the Scouts & became a Boy Scout. I attended one of their "Boy Scout Circus's" & was blown away! Over the years I continued to study camping, hiking, fishing, & hunting (small game.) I learned the proper way to do things & when I got involved in our "Explorer group" in Job Corps I became hooked for the rest of my life!

Here's the point I'm trying to make. If there's anyone out there reading this that's been disappointed in their efforts to find a decent Scout Pack, don't give up. While it's true that you'll find both fellow Scouts as well as leaders who leave a lot to be desired, you can be sure that there will be at least a few adventurous souls who think like you do. Hook up with them! Find a leader somewhere who'll work with you. In the meantime use this Forum for a base of "written" knowledge as there are many good folks here willing to help you learn! Later.
