Friday night........OK, THE Chit has really hit the fan. World wide panic on the 10:PM news. You had a hard time just getting home last night from work, Riots in Europe, Gangs on the streets near every place you would have too slow down (you ran some stop signs, rather than get car-jacked), in two spots a car or truck was burning. The Cause really does not matter, just know that it is world wide. And you never heard about it till you turned the car/truck radio on while going home from work.

You make it home, but it takes four times as long, and many detours, the people you live with were freaked-out about your safety. Over the course of the night you learned it had something to do with the European Economy or their banks or something that does not effect you in any way.

So it is Saturday morning and the door bell rings......it is the next door neighbors. Yes, the ones that think you are a doomer/survivalist wacko's. You have what you need and you even have extra cash because you sold your boat last Sunday for $2,450.00 cash, and the buyer gave you cash, and you for some reason did not put it in the bank.

Your whole family is now in the living room because the door bell keeps ringing. You send the children to their rooms in a voice that scares them, and the youngest starts to cry, You have your Glock in your back pocket. And your mate is holding the shotgun. You tell your mate to go to the hallway between you and the children's rooms, and stay there. The door bell is ringing and they are knocking on the door both, plus you hear them say, "I know that they are home".

You open the door, but you move toward them, and they step back to give you room, as you pull the door closed behind you, and ask, "whats up"....?

They say, "We need your help"

What steps if any do you take over the week-end.......?

Make sure that my people (family and trusted folks) are ok. I do my best to calm the "herd" at the door. My primary plan is "bug in".Since they seem to be looking for leadership, try to organize them by setting up neighborhood tasks.
Examples:
Have them inventory what they have.
Organize a neighborhood watch.
Based on skill sets, assign them tasks, ie; Handy men do whatever repairs or preps needed, medical (nurses,EMTs, doctor) a make shift clinic . Anyone with anylitical skills monitor news and internet for news etc.

Basically keep everyone busy to try to stave off panic until a better idea of the situation can be discerned.

Then wait to see what Monday brings

And for my universe, there are no threads that deal with what we've faced so far or will most likely face. I'm in the bulls-eye, epicenter of SHTF--first defense, front line of TEOTWAWKI. Every day we deal with stuff that hardly ever makes it national. Just today I was on a bus that was re-routed (no explanation offered) because there was an"incident" on 5th Av. Police cars, ambulances, fire trucks. We crept along and what would have taken 20min took 1hr. If I weren't loaded up with bags, I would have gotten off and walked. But I was too tired and didn't give a damn.
So let's play the day after. :)

I think about it even when I don't want to, Sourdough. And in the past my agency did close or change hands or the accounts shifted (fill in the blanks) and I was left jobless. Several times. I got back on my feat which of course is no guarantee that I would again. But I know the drill.
I learned to live waaaaay below my means before it became fashionable and now I simply see it as a challenge. Short of just moving in with you, I'm gonna need a whole lot of location specific instruction as to what to do when I have to haul a$$. :)

OK, it is Monday morning. The neighbors did not need food or money. They just wanted you to know that they were going to his parents farm 370 miles away. They are going to try to rent a U-HAUL Truck if they can, but they are leaving either way. He gave you a key to their house, and asked you to keep an eye on the house, and if you need anything, help yourself. You gave them two 5 gallon fuel containers, one empty, the other half full.

Both neighbors had been laid-off for a year and a half. They were living on extended unemployment insurance, the house was in foreclosure, and one of their cars was repo'ed. They were happy to have been forced into a decision.

First thing Monday as you enter work you are handed a envelope, asked to sign for the receipt of it, and are told a meeting will be held for everyone at 8:45........So, everyone is laid-off indefinitely, something to do with the bank that took over the companies old bank (which FDIC closed) not rolling over the company operating load. There is no severance pay, we love you, we are sorry for any inconvenience, it is not our fault, blah-blah-blah and don't steal any paper clips when you leave.

The banks are open, withdrawals are restricted to $300.00 per day. Your house payment is due next Tuesday it is $2,137.00 the new car pmt. is $477.55 and due this Friday. The President has requested 30 minutes from all channels at 9:00 PM Tonight.

Four months ago you tried to re-finance the house, but the appraisal came in $31,800.00 less than you owe the bank.

In addition , two other neighbors have left, they were “weak sisters” and would not have contributed much. That makes four out of nine houses on the dead end street vacant and with potential “assets”. We board them up and secure them for later inventory. Remainder of the neighbors are similar to me in background, mid 50’s, retired military or police, the men in reasonably good health. All have grand kids and spouse. They have taken time and effort to one degree or another to be basically prepared and provisioned and profess that they have 2-4 months cash on hand.
We got the news about our layoffs, and shrug it off, we were within a couple years of our last retirement anyways. We have approximately one years food on hand, almost the same in cash, the money from the boat sale is on hand also. We are going to implement a daily $300 withdrawal plan , for as long as that lasts. At least for now the retirement checks are going into checking so bills will be covered for now.
With the neighbor, we relax our outward preps, so as not to draw attention. But do agree to maintain a neighborhood watch. Remaining neighbors seem to be on board and things will go smoothly for now.
We live within 3 miles of the entrance to a major military installation, will wait to see what that brings us (good or bad).
I am using the newly available time to install the wood stove that I have been meaning to do. Doing more food shopping to have a bit of buffer. Clearing back hedges and brush near my property line. Spend more time listening to a diverse selection of Radio , TV and internet sources, sorting the “wheat from the chaff”
Am printing out as many resources as I can, putting them in binders (I swear that I was not this far behind).
It’s a little inconvenient, nothing to panic about yet.

It is about the one thing that someone forgot, like 50# of 16d common coated sinkers (Nails).

Advantages:
THere is a community of fit, disciplined people(something that makes me more comfortable)
This makes the community less likely to harbor local rabble rousers.
Any "local" rabble rouser would be dealt with in an immediate manner.
As retired military ,have access to a fairly good medical facility (local facilities could get swamped).
The military takes care of its own, and would likely provide rapid assistance post incident.
Possibility (incident dependent) of seeking and being granted shelter and protection on a secure military post if needed.

Disadvantages

You live next to a potential target.
Savvy people in the area will seek shelter and refuge, possibly overwhelming resources.
Dependent on type of emergency, local traffic patterns could be disrupted during the emergency (Happened post 9/11)

There are more pros and cons, but these leap out to me right now.

When a base is in a state of heightend security, it is very difficult to move on or off the base unless you belong there. I guess if your state has martial law. Not all do. I am not sure that the base is where I want to be. I am not impressed with the leadership skills I am seeing now and am sure that the Core values will surely be among the first casualties.
Bases have limited food resourses and base housing is no longer run by the base but by contractors. Some bases have their housing fenced off from the rest of the base. Also remember not all military members live on base. Those that make the most money usually live off base.
In this situation, I would check my security plans, inventory my resources and maybe start a small hydroponic garden inside because the garden will surely be over run by the "You owe me" population. I also think the local government will want anyone with stock of anything to give it up to be distributed at their discretion.

Martial Law is Federal imposed, so it matters not what the state laws are. And I will strongly disagree that the that the Core values will be a first casualty, in fact the mid to lower level leadership in our military is at its strongest and best now than it has been in recent history . Resource available? I am just outside the Ft Dix, McGuire, Lakehurst Joint Base. Its mission is mobility and has warehouses of supplies, so there would be no lack of resurces (of course there are always scenario variables). Those on base certainly will be in the "cat bird" seat, As Crash indicated security is extremely good (very high per capita security/ Police to resident ratio). At this location all base property and assets (including housing) are behind perimeter fences and there are strict entry control procedures in place. There are definitely worse places to be.

The Superdome housed the have nots and the Basketball arena next door housed the haves. You heard about the lack of food and water in the dome but you did not hear about the supplies that were in the arena.
There were times when the "Authorities" were helping themselves to things that did not belong to them. I know of situations that involved local police, national
guard and active duty army were involved.
Louisiana does not have Martial Law.

Hummmm advantages of living on Base...
Security is better I spose, more of a false sense at least here any way.
It's own Utilities, but they go out more here than they ever did back home. Matter of fact there was just a DO NOT DRINK THE WATER here that lasted several days. Couldn't boil it either.
Has it's own stores, but on pay day it's picked clean so I can only imagine how difficult it would be to get anything if SHTF.
A major negative would be a sort of Martial Law that would happen on Base. Restricted to Base or even restricted from going outside. You would not be free to leave even if you wanted to.
Not to mention a huge target.
Honestly I would rather take my chances away from a Military Installation but that's just me.

OK.....It is early Wednesday morning. You only had economic problems till now. The Nuclear Reactor 21.6 miles from your home, on the other side of the river is melting down, it started unknown hours ago while you were sleeping. (Feel free to have it be a toxic gas from a truck accident) It is a fatal air mass.

First the Bad News: The air flow is in your general direction. The safest direction for you to head to avoid the toxic air mass is already congested, traffic (Both vehicles and walking/running) is moving, but slower than the air mass.

Now the Good News: Sorry, there is no good news, however it is possible for you and yours to reach safety.

Rally the troops (including neighbors) . All don rainsuits and dust masks (the best we can do for now) and load up into three vehicles (trucks) one is an actual duece and a half (bless that neighbor) . Load a bugout supplies. Load on five 55 gallon barrels of water and any other container we can fill rapidly. Note: and all the fuel we can scrounge. All person exposed (will only be the old farts in rain gear and masks will periodicaly douse themselves with water to minimize contamination). Exterior air intakes to the vehicles will be duct tapped off for now.
Break out the maps we have been table topping and researching (see my post that subject) and choose our route through the Pine Barrens via the fire roads . (little known fact that there are huge expanses of stunted Pine Barrens covering Central to south New Jersey). The route chosen will be to get us out of the windward side of the contamination. It will cross established roadways, but quickly disappearing back into the brush. The fellows in the Duece (rear of column)will be the security element (weapons concealed at this point). One or more people will be monitoring the commercial, CB and shortwave radio for updates. Making all the miles we can

That's precisely what I intend to do IF I happen to be at home--heavy duty plastic & duct tape. (Plenty of that on hand)
If I am out and about, then it's $hit out of luck. The dust mask & safety goggles I carry around 90% of the time just won't be enough. Besides, it's anyone's guess what might get released. Different substances have different degradation rates and require different remedies. Just can't prepare for every contingency.

I would think that would work. As I said, the amount of time you are exposed and the distance from the source, I guess I would have to add the strength/type of radiation, are all primary concerns. As long as you don't get it on you or breath it then there is some protection in bugging in. Just remember that radiation gives off rays (alpha (not much of a concern), beta (a bit more of a concern if it is on your skin), gamma and X-ray (both can penetrate several feet of protection. These two can do you in if you get a large enough dose. That could occur through the walls of your home if the amount of fallout is great enough).

So, if you bug in and you are underground (basement or other underground dwelling) then you should be okay. If you bug in above ground then you want to stay to the center of your house and keep as much dense material between you and the outside walls as possible.

As for me, I'm booking it if I can.

A reactor accident that close with the prevailing winds in my direction? I too would start dosing potassium iodide (yes, it is in my first aid kit. My larger truck has all of my camping gear, 10 gallons of water and about 30 days of food in it. I would quickly load more food and water (why I keep it in the containers I do), attach a small tairler (enclosed) and load with gasoline (5 gallon containers X 12) along with chainsaws, axes, shovels. Mrs. Crash would be throwing some clothing in large trash bags. She would also load protective equipment (nitrile gloves, dust masks, etc.). This should take no longer than 5 to 10 minutes, and we are headed out. Drive perpendicular to wind direction, and then angle away. Do not run AC in vehicle. Do not open windows. Don clothing that covers exposed skin. Wear respirators. Monitor radio (s) for changes in wind direction.

Anyone know how far away one needs to be in a full scale melt-down. I was here in Alaska and we were down wind a long ways when Chernobyl Reactor melted down in 86', and we were advised to stay indoors. And then not to eat animals like Caribou that ate surface plants that year.
