Rebel - If you have a source that says they will default on payments, I'd like to see it. They have problems like everyone else but I've yet to see a source that says they will default.
Are we forgetting they received money in 2008 to avoid defaults? The world didn't end then.

I heard a short bit about it on the news. About all that was said is that, they may become like Greece this weekend. If true, "Monday could be interesting".
You just had to say it didn't you? That's why you posted.
I don't think they'll be below 4% on GDP that's for sure. Spain, Portugal and Ireland are right behind them.

It's not why but, it did have and probably will have it's uses. As for the posible event, it is interesting to me. I'd like to know what folks think if this pattern continues. If this happens I feel (I don't know, a gut feeling) that it will continue. Maybe it needs to for a correction.

Rebel, The solution is simple. They (Hungary) and all of the others just need to gather all there "DEBT" roll it up into a nice "Derivative" call it something that sounds rock solid and sell it to "YOUR" 401K Manager.
If the Problem is why too much DEBT, the Solution "IS NOT" more Debt.
Well, that's certainly one option.
Rebel - There are five countries in the EU that have allowed their debt to climb untethered. They are Greece, Portugal, Spain, Italy and Ireland. They are at or above 100% debt-to-GDP. If you think about what those countries looked like economically prior to the EU then it's not much of a surprise they are in trouble now. All capitalized on lower debt costs to borrow huge amounts and spend like crazy. My guess, and that's all it is, is you may well see one or more countries abandon the EU after the bailout ends. A little thievery would go hand in hand with a couple of them.
If you think about the government of Hungary then you sort of shake your head yes that they are where they are. Corrupt, stringent controls, few freedoms (more today than yesterday but still pretty strict). Add to that government officials that talk only negatives and it's little wonder their currency is falling against the Euro (which is already down) and they are facing near default status.
You can not look at today's economy for a given country and say, Aha! see, the world is crumbling. You have to look at past history to understand why they are where they are today. No different that looking at your empty check book and lamenting about how bad things are. You have to look at what created that empty checkbook in the first place. What you find with the countries above is uninhibited spending. Now it's time for them to pay the bill they created.

Or other option: Labor strikes that paralyze the country, wide spread civil unrest, and anarchy, which farther weakens said country, leading to civil war.

What happens when the EU charges conspiricy and moves to seize assets of one of the defaulting nations?
The western world has finally socialized itself into the "Catch 22" stage. We have now run out of "other peoples' money." There is now only one option.
The labor force must be thinned and we must tear enough stuff up that it will take several years of full employment and production to replace.
We absolutely must to be rid of a bunch of older citizens that are about to claim their lifetime benefits, since that carrot on a stick has also been eaten by the welfare state.
How about an intense depression, followed by a redrawing of the world map based on massive waves of migration and a couple of strong military invasions based on long term fraud of national leaders.
OH, sorry, we already did that one didn't we. What will we call the new one? The Great War? The War to End all Wars? The War to Make the World Safe for Democracy?

I am NOT Worried.........and besides that is just what is on the "Official" books, which is about .09% of the real unfunded liabilities.
@ kyratshooter - What happens when they seize assets? It happens all the time. The U.S. has done it to any number of countries. Nothing happens, that's the bottom line. Sorry, but your Catch 22 isn't true either. China, Japan and England just invested billions on government bonds. We're still alive and well on other people's money.
@Rebel - You bet I have. It's deplorable and someone in Washington needs to understand that it has to stop. The difference is...we can still pay it and we will be able to pay it for quite some time to come. If the world didn't think we couldn't they wouldn't continue to invest in us.
Take the blinders off, recovery is everywhere. Jobless rate is down to 9.7%, down from 10.1 in October. The DOW is staying at or above 10,000. Construction and the real estate markets are starting to move again. It's still not a rose but it's no longer a pig either. It's just another business cycle. Have I said that before?

Rick, I know you really want to believe that poop, but none of it is TRUE. The DOW will Close below 10,000 today, even with the U.S. Government buying hard.
Delete the Temporary Census takers, and it is Toilet'City, Private company jobs was way off today. Soon everyone will work for the government and we will have full employment.
Housing will go straight DOWN now that the tax incentives expired.
It is ALL an Illusion, and someday people will get that painful reality, and perhaps get it fatality.
Believe whatever you want. Take whatever action you deem appropriate. I've heard it was the end of the world from doom and gloomers for over 40 years and it ain't happened yet. Every recession brings them out of the word work singing the same tired old song. I'll believe it when I see it. But just between you and me, now would be the time to invest in stocks while they are still undervalued. Just sayin'.....

I only invest in things I can touch with both hands. Like Food, bullets, Farm, buildings, tractors, clothing.......you get the idea. I invest in things that are REAL, not in ILLUSIONS & there associated Smoke and Mirrors (GAP mark too Fantasy Book Value)...:):):)

The reason I came back to this thread is a lot of folks are legitimately concerned about the economic stability of the EU and some of its neighbors. So I thought I'd dredge up a study done by Stanford University that looked at whether countries default only in bad economic times or if it's just something that occurs regardless of cycle. Their study covered the years 1840 through 2004. Their conclusion was that it occurs all the time.
"We find that countries default on loans from private foreign creditors more often in “bad times” than in “good times. ”The relationship is surprisingly weak, however: domestic output often declines without triggering a default, and countries occasionally suspend payments or reschedule their obligations when domestic output is high."
"106 countries have defaulted a total of 250 times since the end of the Napoleonic Wars. The most common defaulters — Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico, Uruguay, and Venezuela — each experienced at least eight distinct spells of default. Ecuador and Honduras hold the record for the longest periods in default; beginning with their initial loans as members of the Central American Confederation in the 1820s, each has accumulated nearly 120 years of non-compliance. In our sample, new defaults arose in every decade and were most common during the 1980s, when more than 50 countries (about 40% of all nations that owed money to private foreign creditors) failed to pay in full on schedule."
The point being in all of this is that you can take some consolation in the fact that countries default all the time on loans. Neither EU's problems nor Hungary's problems are isolated or indicative of a major calamity. It's certainly not a good thing but they will ultimately reschedule their payments and/or negotiate new terms. I would also point out that the reference to the 1980's above was during the last recession and please note that almost half of all nations defaulted during the last recession and we're still here.

Rick, Just this morning I saw (and can't find) a new study I think by Stanford University, and the top two now most likely to default are Venezuela and then Argentina. They listed the top 10, but I don't remember the others.

I am not Rick, but that was the purpose of the current study. Greece and Hungary to my surprise were half way down the list of ten.

At the Moment Crash, Hungary is a member of the of the EU but not the Eurozone. It's currency and domestic finances are not stable enough for it to join. There will still be financial help through the EU financial service, but they won't be bailed out to the same degree as those other countries in trouble that already use the Euro.
Personally I feel the current crisis within the eurozone will cause the breakdown of it, and individual member countries will return to independant currencies. Germany and France in particular won't want to jeopardise their own recovery to bailout those countries that have been taking advantage of the benefits of the eurozone without thought of future repayments. JMO.

Actually, Winnie, that was a pretty good summation. I'm not quite that dire on the future of the EU. It's not just an economic position but also a political one and to a large degree a military one. As I said in another post, I wouldn't at all be surprised to see someone like Greece get bailed out only to withdraw from the EU if they are allowed to. But as a whole, I think the EU will remain stable.
I think a comparison could be made to individual states in the U.S. - Europa is becoming much like the Fed.
Sourdough - I saw a list in May that had California listed as one of the top government IN THE WORLD that was poised to default. That was from BusinesInsider. I went back and found it. It was published on May 12, this year. Just a month ago.

I agree Rick, the EU will continue, however I don't the the Euro as a currency will.
I'd be surprised if the EU currency fell. It's incredibly hard and expensive to change currencies not to mention the political impacts such a drastic move would have. There are individuals and governments around the world that have Euro's in their vaults. It's a traded commodity just like anything else. Not impossible to do, just very difficult. Think back to how hard it was to introduce the Euro.

Hmm, I see what you mean. I still think Germany and France may opt out, or at least attempt something similar to a business takeover of those countries in the mire. Not sure whether I've explained that properly.
I'm just relieved we opted out of the Eurozone and kept the pound.
An interesting side note. The Federal Reserve just released a report that shows U.S. businesses are squirreling away more money than ever.
"The Federal Reserve reported Thursday that nonfinancial companies had socked away $1.84 trillion (my emphasis) in cash and other liquid assets as of the end of March, up 26% from a year earlier and the largest-ever increase in records going back to 1952. Cash made up about 7% of all company assets, including factories and financial investments, the highest level since 1963.
While renewed confidence in corporate-bond markets has allowed big companies to raise a record amount of money, many are still hesitant to spend the cash on hiring or expansion amid doubts about the strength of the recovery. They are also anxious to keep cash on hand in case Europe's debt troubles lead to a new market freeze."

I see that consumer spending dropped 1.2% in May.
Rebel - I saw that report, too. I'm not certain what the root cause is/was but I suspect folks are trying to build up savings by spending on necessities and paying down debt. That would be a good thing if that's the reason although a negative stimulus on the economy overall. Everything has a good and bad side.
