View Full Version : A small but effective first aid kit for day hikes?

As tacticool as it will look, I ordered a molle leg platform to hang my utility knife and a small molle pouch from, as its the only way I can comfortably keep my knife at the proper height and conceal my small revolver somewhere on the same side (lost some mobility on my right side, so I have had to adapt). Anyway, once I get over the embarrassment of looking like a retard, I figure I will have some extra space for a small first aid kit to throw in a spare pocket where I used to keep my gun (pockets are smaller on my summer pants) or in the outer pocket of the molle pouch, or even in an additional small molle pouch.

The problem is, when it comes to first aid supplies I always over do it. Youd think I was leading an entire hiking party through a week in the wilderness every time I go out. Im all for being prepared, but I need to but back a bit.

What do you recommend for a 1 day outing where I am no more than 15 miles from civilization at all times. This is not survival gear, just first aid supplies.

Since you like the leg platform, how about something like this. http://www.maxpedition.com/store/pc/THERMITE-VERSIPACK-4p19.htm

Any number of fanny packs, waist packs or shoulder bags, or small back packs would work well too.

Take a look at their waist pack line. http://www.maxpedition.com/store/pc/Waistpacks-c6.htm The smallest probably wouldn't hold much more than a cell phone and pack of smokes, but there are quite a few size choices. Just wear it on your belt. I know there are a lot of brands out there, many of which are less expensive than the Maxpedition lines - I just like them for their function and sturdy build.

You can use the Condor EMT Rip Away Pack on your drop leg setup. That's how I'm going to go with mine. I'll use the drop leg for my knife and my first aid kit just as you described.

Any idea exactly what you will pack and how much the total weight will be? The leg platform would be a convenient place to keep everything but between the gun and knife I'm already at about 50 oz on one leg

I like having that Quick-Clot stuff. A few band-aids. Maybe a snake-bite'thingie, something for a sharp stick in the eye. Maybe something for multiple wasp/bee stings.

The single biggest recurring medical problem I have is a stick in the eye, after that would be falling and cutting my hand or knee/leg. My nightmare is getting bear mauled.

I don't go too far out from civilization since I have a destination that I'm going to, so my biggest concerns are falling and getting small cuts and bruises. So my light altoids can carries alcohol swabs, bandaids, and superglue. Only times I've used it is when other people have cut themselves somehow while we in the car going somewhere.

Haha, I would have totally asked for a list lol. I just carry a snubby 357 usually. I havent found any pouches that would fully conceal at 45 compact or full size which are my other two carry weapons. In the winter its not an issue, but in spring and summer it becomes more difficult. I have tons of great holsters, but I refuse to IWB carry while hiking or backpacking and I really dont want the added attention of having a gun. In the fall and winter I can conceal anything easily.

So you wear two leg platforms one on left, one on right? Do you find that more or less comfortable than carrying a pack of some sort? I hate the look of those molle leg platforms, they are hot and make me feel like Im playing dress up as a swat team member, but with everything being molle compliant lately, its usually cheaper to go that way than to try to customize Ive found.

The top strap on this one goes around your waist. Could run that strap through your knife shealth which is what my plan is.

I need my knife sheath to sit lower than my waste for ease of movement. Thats the main reason I went with the moll platform, the sheath was built molle compatible and sits perfectly at that hight. I could have another custom sheath made as its own thigh rig, but its more expensive and its a custom made knife which would require sending it away...which isnt happening hehe.

Yeah I see your point. Well I'm not sure how you plan on setting up your leg rig or the size of the pouch you will be using but a basic medical kit should get the job done.

Actually, I have all the stuff to put in a pouch, I just need something to put it in. I thought I had way too much stuff for a day hike until I saw Rick's list. My first aid pack is about the same only no cipro (although I think I have some), a different pain killer instead of vicodin, I carry a few epi pens, and 2 rolls of 2" sports tape, plus pre wrap. Right now I carry it in a few different zip loc bags and a big square first aid kit stuffed in a 1900 cu in pack, but for a day hike I dont carry a pack if I can help it since my dog carries all the gear and survival stuff, but Im out of room when it comes to first aid gear.

This is the pack my dog carries, lots of room, just not quiet enough (lol we were sharing a moment):

http://app.onlinephotofiler.com/images/A_4/4/1/0/100144/d18d5b66597340efa6b7d001bf68b2fc.Large.jpg

Anyway, since it looks like maybe I shouldnt downsize the first aid stuff, Im back to square one. I really dont want to wear to leg molle platforms, but I also dont want to carry 80 oz on one leg either if I was to try and cram it all on one panel. Im trying to figure out if a right leg panel would balance me out, or just make me feel more weighted down (and looking a bit ninja-ish). Bottom line, I need a lot of mobility, I need my balance to remain as good as possible and I need to keep myself from getting to hot...those foam insulated panels on molle gear get hot from the very little experience I have.

Excellent pack. I might just use that as a start for mine. I would suggest more 4x4's, as they are really handy but don't last long cleaning a wound. YMMV

We have open carry here in Indiana so having the .45 on my leg is no problem. I'm out in the woods anyway and you don't run into too many folks. I find it very comfortable and easy to get to.

The drop leg for the First Aid kit is a recent decision. I'm actually looking to reduce the weight of my gear and distribute it over the larger muscles of the body. I also like the fact that I can lower the center of gravity a bit. When you start getting older you have to consider things like that I guess. Anyway, here's a link to the platform I'm ordering for my first aid kit.

Rick, can you order from them and have it shipped to me directly. Yes assuming I had prepaid you or your company. This would eliminate the double shipping cost, and you would not have to handle it.

Other question: Why not just use two leg holsters, and put the survival gear in the stand-by holster packed in triple zip-lock bags.

I discovered a tool for de-shedding after 18 yrs. of trying everything. With a 30 day money back guarantee, I decided to fork out $35 at Petco and see if it's everything they claim it is. Well, it's been pretty miraculous, certainly worth the price although you can get it for less elsewhere.

I bought a furminator for my malamute. It works like a charm. Definitely worth the money. Some warning though. It pulls a lot of fur out. Every time you rake it through, you fill up the comb. If you are inside, you better have a vacuum. I usually use a vacuum hose and just suck the fur off of the comb after every brush. Or, I go out in the field near our house and spend a good hour with fur swirling everywhere. I have noticed that it only pulls the undercoat, not the top coat. Anyways, be prepared to be engulfed in fur.

used the furminator today outside, got a trashbag full of fur almost. I did over do it in one spot and gave Jackson a tiny spot that looks like he is balding on his rear leg...he was not amused. I need to get more from his backside, but he got annoyed after about 20 minutes and sat down so I couldnt reach anything...he was a good sport during the brushing, so I let him go. I"ll try more tomorrow in that one spot, making sure not to over do it again.

I got the molle gear and initially hated it. The drop of the platform really multiplied the feeling of weight and accentuated momentum of the equipment on it with every step. I ended up removing the strap from the platform altogether and now just have the platform attached directly to my belt with no drop, it works very well. Im still deciding whether to use one leg strap or two though. The top strap pulls all the equipment closer to me, but it does ride up a bit considering how high the platform is. I may wrap a velcro strap around the two leg straps to keep the top one from riding up.

My compact 45 fits perfectly in the pouch, so I'll be using that instead of the .357 which is fine with me, but I'll definitely need another pouch for a first aid kit, I thought this one had multiple pockets but it doesnt. I defiinitely wouldnt want to carry anything else on this side though and I still need a pouch for a first aide kit. Im up in the air whether I want to carry something on my waist, get a lumbar pack, or attach something to the other leg.

Sandwich baggie first aid kit

1. 4-4X4 Dressings ( can be cut smaller if needed)
2. 1- Roll 1 surgical tape ( if you need more than this call for help)
3. 1- small tube super glue (great for the dogs pads also)
4. 6- large band aids ( a big band aid can be cut down or will cover a small wound)
5. 6- Imodium AD tablets
6. 2- Epi pens (only if you need them)
7. 1-tweezer (small and very pointed)
8. 2-tube of Gatorade powder for dehydration (a little mixed with dogs water may help him if dehydrated)
9. 12-tablet your choice of pain killer
10. 1-small pouch of Quick clot.
This is very similar to what I carry on the fire line. If more is needed improvise. If this your day hike only kit, it is small and will work. We all just have to live with some aches pains and injuries from time to time. My dad replaced me with an Alaskan Malamute when I joined the Air Force. My bothers did not like to hunt, fish or go back packing. And he had a few learning experience with his dog. He was prepared to fix himself but not his dog. The dog really cut his pads on the granite in sierras. And my dad put his own socks on the dog to help. His next stop was at a pet store to put together a kit for the dog.

I don't carry first aid kits. I let things bleed a little to wash wound out from the inside. I don't ever use bandaids because they heal faster if the air gets to them and they scab over. I don't takes pills so my natural imune system stays strong. There is nothing in these kits I can't live without, improvise or know how to use. The body has better healing ability than you give it credit for. Common sense safety should be stessed more to prevent injury. First aid kits are dead weight. I keep some stuff at home or in camp but I never use it. I don't see much reason to carry things I don't use.

I have a sister that is a nurse practioner and worked in the medical profession for 35 years in Remote Alaska. She put together a first aid kit for me that I would think would as good as any that could be purchased. It barely scratches the surface of what can happen to you and serious injury requires serious care.

http://i540.photobucket.com/albums/gg346/akmofo/IMG_0837.jpg

Some of this kit is beyond my abilities but I have a book. That's as good as it gets and it is too much to carry. I have never noticed her carrying a first aid kit and seen her handle injuries. It is almost always the same. Immobilize the injury and get them to where they can be properly cared for. This is very similar to what I learned when I was a Boy Scout. I would like to see things what a person would carry in a small kit that could save your life in a life threatening situation that would first be likely to happen and second could not be improvised in the field. Examples please. I'm not talking about sickly people with some kind of physical ailment but a normal healthy person.

So what does that stuff do and why can't I live without it?

I don't think anybody is challenging your ability to not carry items in your first aid kit, or a kit at all. Obviously if you don't know what an item is or how it is used, there is no point in carrying it. What you are doing works for you. My point (won't speak for others) is that it does not work for me. I'll continue to carry a first aid kit, and with any luck at all I won't need to use it. Past experience tells me that I probably will though. Most of that experience has been using it to help others.

I think this is a valid point and when out with others loads can be divided amoung them that changes the equation of priorities and what is brought. I do consider first aid for base camp and home preparedness a prudent thing to have. It is just a little lower on my list of priorities thats all.

AS - Personal opinion here. If someone can assess and resolve wilderness issues utilizing wilderness remedies then I'm all for that. Wilderness first responders are taught that to a large degree. Use, modify and improvise what you have available. I don't have that detailed level of knowledge so I have to compensate for some and enjoy the convenience for the rest. A bandaid is quicker and handier to me than finding some deer moss or a spider web.

Another large part are the nasties that none of us can defeat 100% of the time. Bacteria, viruses and yeasts. It is an absolute that everyone of us will be infected with one or the other multiple times in our lives. If we are very lucky, it won't be Streptococcus pyogenes or E.coli or some similar nasty. There are no wilderness answers for invaders like those. That's when prescription meds are necessary. Undercooked bear could hand you a case of Trichinosis and you won't rid yourself of that without help. That's why I carry Cipro to see me through until I can get to help.

Finally, I never want to find myself in the back country with a broken arm or leg. If I do, however, my first aid kit will offer up some Hydrocodone 500 Mg tabs just for that purpose. It will help ease the pain while I wait for help to arrive. I see no reason to suffer unnecessarily when I have the ability to avoid it. Nor do I want to wind up with a puncture wound to a femoral or subclavian artery. But if I do I know that I stand a chance of not bleeding out because I carry QuikClot.

Your skills and where-with-all have probably been honed for a long time. I wish I could do it but I can't so I carry a first aid kit and hope it's just wasted energy toting it around.

Rick, I have mentioned before I am not well educated or overly smart but I can respond to the part I understood. I only eat vegetarians. If I knew I was going to live this long I would have taken better care of myself and have bones that did not set right and even a couple in my hand that broke in 4 places and all fused together. I have a 3 inch scare on my face I could stick my tongue through when it happened that might not be noticable if I had it tended to. I did a lot of work on myself as I did my dogs and they all lived but I can't say it didn't hurt. If I had a kit I would like morphine but with my weakness for physical pleasure it would not be long before I was sitting on the side of mountain all glassy eyed feeling no pain for no reason at all. I do believe that many possess skills in their day to day lives that they will not know the true value of until used in a survival situation. Your medical knowledge will serve you well and I will have to make do with my ability not to faint when I see my own blood.

sjj - I don't know how small of a pamphlet you want but you might try this:

http://www.adventuremedicalkits.com/documents/4000-0170%20Wilderness%20First%20Aid%20and%20Survival%2 0Instructions.pdf

Depending on the type of cell phone you have you can also download first aid instructions to your cell phone.

One thing I don't have in the picture but is in my kit is Hydrogen peroxide. Animal bites have more likely hood of infection and I just pour I on the wound a few times. I used to use dogs back before snowmachines and they where always getting torn up and I had to fix them up. Use the 3 percent, the 20 percent hurts too much. The more it foams up the more germs it is killing. This just comes from my own experience and not any medical expertise. It has always worked though in the hundreds of times I have used it on myself and my dogs. Like I have mentioned I am into long term wilderness survival and also carry Alka seltzer cold plus. I don't think it cures anything but if you get sick it has decongestants that will allow you to get a good nights rest which is the best healing you can get IMO. I do think most have weakened thier immune systems through the use of antibiotics and now have become dependent on them and other drugs too. I don't take drugs unless I really need them and then they work better for that reason, but antibiotics kill all germs the good and bad and that weakens you long term. Some people are going to have to toughen up and if you can't don't consider long term wilderness survival. You'll becoming part of the circle of life and the laws of nature apply, the strong survive.

There are plenty of antibiotics and such found in nature, that's where the commercial stuff comes from, it's a synthetic version of what nature already provides. Mosses, lichens, etc. one would have to thoroughly research what they are and how to procure them, but they are indeed available.

But, in this day and age, save for a complete breakdown of society, it makes much more sense just to build a custom first aid kit out of storebought itmes though.

Of course, you still need to know how to use those as well. Simply having it in a kit will not save you.

If I thought there's any chance I'd be stuck out in the wilds for more than a week I'd take a well stocked first aid kit with me.

AS - Hydrogen peroxide also kills skin cells. I know a lot of folks use it. I even have it in my own medicine cabinet but not for cuts. Soap and water will clean the wound equally well without damaging the skin. Then apply topical antibiotic such as Neosporin. It's a much smaller tube and easy to carry than HP. Just a thought.

Anitbiotics don't necessarily kill "good" and "bad" germs. Antibiotics are pretty specific as to what they will affect. That's why a prescription might not work. It isn't the right antibiotic for the particular infection.

For example, an erythromycin might well be prescribed for bacterial bronchitis or whooping cough where penicillins and cephalosporins won't work. The antibiotic has to be targeted to the infection. I will agree that most antibiotics will disrupt the flora of the gut but you quickly recover from that unless you have some underlying health issue. It does not impact your immune system.

Any health care providers care to dispute that please have at.

RWC - Let me take issue with a couple of points. While nature does in fact provide the basic building blocks most of today's drugs are not found in nature because they are created entirely in the lab. You won't find Trimethoprim in nature. It's an entirely man-made drug. Nitrofurantoin is another synthetic antibiotic.

Remember, too, that when you apply natural remedies to topical problems such as a rash or cut you are also adding anything that resides on that natural remedy such as viruses, yeasts, fungus, bacteria and parasites not affected by the natural remedy. Introducing a hookwork into a cut by using something like reindeer moss is a real possibility and not one that you would encounter by applying something like neosporin.

Just offering some things to think about.

I always carry a small kit and I always end up using it on someone else. Of course, I am a Scout Master, and boy scouts are accidents waiting to happen. I will be surprised if any make it to 18. I am surprised I made it to 18 :D .

With hydrogen peroxide, if you decide to carry it, remember that it degrades when exposed to light. When I say degrade, I mean it turns to water and oxygen. A 32 oz bottle will take less than a day to do this, when exposed to light. That is why when you buy it in the store, it is in a container that doesn't let light in. Also, any concentration above 5% will burn you. Don't ask me how I know this. I also didn't know that you could buy 20% over the counter. We have 50% and 30% at work, but we had to special order it. Anyways, I don't carry it any more, for the reasons that Rick mentioned. I use an iodine solution instead. My mom gave me a large box of betadine wipes for the first aid kit, and I have a bottle of betadine at home.
