View Full Version : Bugging Out: Power Line Rights of Way?
So I'm thinking to myself, "there's gotta' be an alternative to paved roads if you have to bug out in a vehicle and all roads are jammed."
Railroad tracks and easements? Not a good idea for obvious reasons.
And then I thought about Power Line Rights of Way. :innocent: I'm familiar with a few around here. Most are pretty level, no steep grades, and the vegetation is usually cut down fairly low. Pretty good surface for a typical 4-wheel drive. Even though they cross paved roads, there ain't gonna' be much traffic to contend with, and it sure beats sitting still for hours on a jammed highway.
Time for me to take a long ride on a dirt bike. Purely educational, of course.
Any of you linesmen here have any thoughts about this?

I'm not a lineman, but I can tell you that, around here, some are just fine, and some...well....you better have a pretty tuff 4x4.

Good idea unless they run North and South and you need to head East or West. Also like 2dumb said, some a very rugged. Would hate to follow one for several miles only to be stopped dead in my tracks by an impassible obstruction.

Good idea....but you may want to use a 4-wheeler. You're no spring chicken, and we hate for you to get hurt. LOL
Around here, water becomes an obstacle, in just about any direction.
Well...water is a problem if you go east that's for sure.

If there is a line near your place and you find the same section number crossing a road on the east side of town (for instance), then you know that the line by your house will get you there. The structure numbers will number from one source or switch yard to another so if you are on section 25, structure 125 than you know if the next one is structure 124 than you have 124 more pole structures to go to get to the end of the line.

A quad pulling a small atv trailer would be the way to go.

They will run from power plants, switch yards and substations. If you want to save some driving, find the corridor that goes to where you want to get and ask a lineman in the area what is on the other end of it. He will be impressed if you ask him where section XX goes to!
I can get from my house to my camp following the high lines for all but the half mile from my house to the nearest ROW and the two miles from there to the camp! They are a very good thing to learn.

We hunt the lines and down here you had better have a good off road vehicle. We set our stands last archery season and observed a larger gator hole with a resident gator straight ahead. While a passable knee deep hole was to the west.
Well that's in daylight. He wanted to move his leaner over by us. I kept saying he needed to walk the water with us. I said that gator hole is directly ahead of you. He walked smack into that hole and straight up his section of ladder stand. LOL Fell back on the bank soaked and wet.
I am quite sure that gator shat itself that morning.
Anyway, down here you had better have a bad arse 4X4 AND a back up plan.

I use them now, but around here they pass thru swamps, lakes and extreme thickets that no typical everyday machine could navigate. Although, that doesn't mean we don't still try to navigate them with our big 4x4's. Yeehaa! Generally there is some sort of obstruction every mile or so. On foot I think it'd be a good bet and possibly on a bike with some detours here and there to get around the lakes and swamps.
I've sat and wondered what they did to get the lines thru some spots in the first place. When they clear out the undergrowth they generally skip the swampy sections and they have some fairly large and specialized machinery to do it. It's surprising how quickly the undergrowth comes back too.

Good point! But if you ask a power lineman where does section 50 (for instance) go he will tell you from Mcfalls to Turner sub and if you care to get from one town to the other, section 50 will do the job and his directions will work.
Oh, and here they would leave off the "kv" it would just be a 115 line or a 33 line.

We used the lead number to tell direction and pole number above it to give you approx. distance. Always used cable size pulling off as go where the 100 pulls off the main to the West. Simple.

When I was younger in Northern MN the powerlines were a good path through some thick stuff and would have been easy for a 4WD, until you hit a creek or river or lake. Here in OH it's the same. One thing to consider; People hunt on powerlines for one reason, they are easy to see on for quite a distance. If you had somebody gunning for you....

In my younger years, a lot of dirt biking was done along these, right-of ways, as well as old railroad right of ways........of course they took out the bridges........
Most areas were passable, except for the water, swamps etc.
So much so that they actually had them patrolled as a lot of others seem to hit on the idea as well. They even went so far as to buy a good sized dirt bike as a "patrol vehicle".
bad news for them was there were more of the trespassers than chase bikes.
So they were just a nuisance.
As always your plan to check them out first, is a valuable asset, and necessary.
I would opt for a 4 wheeler and trailer now.

Anything you create you own. Simple as that. There is an implied copyright on anything you make. You can apply to the U.S. Copyright Office and have "a thing" registered with the government. But if you make or create it then it's protected.

In some cases Ken, that's someone's biggest asset. Why not try to protect it as you would say, a house?

Let me put it anoher way. Once a file grows beyond 5,000 pages and the research takes more than 500 hours and I have to write hundreds of pages of legal memoranda, well, I'd rather be on trial in another case - say something far less boring, like a murder trial.

OK Thank you. You can leave it in my post. I appreciate your concern and understanding. I don't want to be a pill about it. It is just that unauthorized use of commercial pictures is a big thing in my world. That picture is in the FLorida Keys by the way.

That's why it is always recommended to register your work with the library of Congress. It is so easy and cheap and saves a lot of headaches

A few months ago. I took it because I was attracted to the intelligent look in his eyes. He was staring at me, so I think the feeling was mutual :online2long:

Somebody I know almost got arrested recently and all his equipment confiscated for photographing an ordinary railroad. Potential terrorist threat they said. If some authority doesn't want you to to do something and they don't know why, they throw it under homeland security.
There is a lot of truth in that. The world's changing. Stopping to take a picture of a gas pumping station or a power substation might just get you detained for a bit. Sad, really.

Thats a good point, same thing happened to me just after 9/11, me and my Buddy went SCUBA diving near the spillway of the Davis dam, A place we often went, when we came up from a 20 Min dive, The FBI was waiting for us, they seen we were just Rec Divers and after a Field interrogation they let us leave, That area near the Dam was Buoyed off the next day, The owner of the local dive shop told us the FBI was in his store that day with detailed instructions on what he was supposed to do if ANYONE asked him certain questions, Like renting gear, filling tanks and re-breathers,, I guess they were afraid Terrorists may try to blow up the Dam ? The Colorado River at that time (and a few times since) was being patrolled by AH64 Apache gunships, Normally, Its patrolled by the US Coast Guard as its a Federal Waterway.
